Carol Clifton St. Gabriel Elementary School
Carol was one of the first students to attend St. Gabriel School moving from the Building on Centre Street to the present location at St. Ga-briel School in 1973. She was in Grade 6 at that time.
Carol began her volunteerism career in 1982 when her first child, Shawn began Kindergarten. She started as a member of the Parents Com-mittee. She would have 3 other children, Patri-cia, Kayla and Amy go through St. Gabriel School, with the youngest one graduating in 2005. She would continue at St. Gabriel school as part of the Governing Board.
After her youngest child graduated, Carol re-mained at St. Gabriel School being part of the Governing Board and starting a Home and
School Association volunteer Program. She re-gards St. Gabriel School as her home. She has served as a lunch monitor, tutor, daycare aid, secretary, and educator and is a major contribu-tor to the life and survival of the school. She played an instrumental part in all our three dif-ferent years where the school had to have briefs to stay open. For a few years, our school strug-gled to remain open. She is our link to much of the history of St. Gabriel School.
She was a volunteer during the time her kids went to school at St. Gabriel and continues to do so long after they have gone. Carol devoted her time as a parent in and outside the school, doing whatever was asked of her. She spent countless hours helping with the Irish Dancing Program that is famous at St. Gabriel School
VOLUNTEER OF DISTINCTION

with Barnette Short. She is the life and soul of the Irish Dancing Program attending Fies’ and preparing students for competition. Her stu-dents adore her leadership and organization.
She makes sure children receive proper nu-trition during lunch hour as a devoted lunch monitor. She takes part in the Champions For Life Program. Her granddaughter Madison, now carries on the family tradition of attending St. Gabriel School.
Carol is the person that if you need anything with supervision, preparation for Irish danc-ing or daycare she’s the one you want. She can do anything from organizing students for lunch games, dancing, fundraising, daycare, and story-telling and makes the best tea. She loves and lives at the school and we are better for having
her. Ask her a question about the history and culture of St. Gabriel and the community and she is an Encyclopedia of Knowledge.
Students call her Carol and her name is synony-mous with what is Sung and is renown inside and outside the school. She is a song of Praise.
All her dedication has earned her the honor of being nominated for the volunteer of distinction award.
“Carol Clifton is what you call an Irish flower. She is a blossom amongst a meadow of green in this school. What she brings to the students allows them to embrace their culture and at the same time, gives them all the love that they need”

On behalf of the EMSB Parents Committee, thank you for everything that you do.
Your commitment to our schools and our children is an invaluable asset.
These days, there is no more precious commodity than time, and we thank you for giving yours.
The EMSB Parents Committee recognizes that parent volunteers are a key pillar of our educational
system and play a pivotal role in ensuring the success of our schools and most importantly, our children.
Congratulations and thank you for your unwavering service to our EMSB community.

PROUD PARTNER OF THE EMSB
PROUD PARTNER OF THE EMSB
Adrian andNatalie Bercovici
Adrian and Natalie Bercovici are this year’s EMSB Volunteer Ambassadors of the year. This award was created in 2017, with football legend Anthony Calvil-lo becoming the first recipient.
Adrian and Natalie Bercovici founded the Gen-erations Foundation in 1999 and now serve 118 schools and learning centres. They provide break-fasts, hot lunches and snacks daily to over 8,500 chil-dren. Food programs are also available for students in after-school cooking classes, homework, tutoring, physical and sports activities and reading programs. Montreal families have one of the lowest per capita incomes in Canada and one in six Montreal chil-dren go to bed hungry. As a result, many families are struggling with the additional burden as single parents and experience various crisis situations such as illness, loss of jobs, stress, debt or rents that could be as much as 40 percent of family income. The Generations Foundation focuses on children
VOLUNTEER AMBASSADORS OF THE YEAR
who suffer from hunger and social problems, they also ensure that children most in need receive their services because they believe that to enable children to learn, they must be properly nourished. The food programs assist children in becoming more indepen-dent and self-sufficient. Their centres offer snacks, shelter and activities to children.
Adrian and Natalie worked at the Old Brewery Mis-sion when they received a donation of $100,000 from Patricia Mackenzie and close to one million from Mayor Bourque at the time to help build a women’s shelter which is known as the Pavillon Patricia Mackenzie. They had been working at the Old Brewery Mission for about nine years when they received their first phone call from St. Gabriel’s School asking for help because students hadn’t been sleeping, couldn’t concentrate and had no food. Af-ter meeting with the principal, they started a hot lunch program right out of their basement while still working at the Old Brewery. They decided it was time to give back, “If we were to ever make a differ-ence, it had to start with the children”, they stated. They loaded the trunk of their Marquis and deliv-ered hot lunches to St. Gabriel’s. Soon after, other schools began contacting them for the same service and before the end of their first year, they were serv-ing ten schools. From hot meals, they added snacks during the day. And from day snacks, they offered snacks during after-school programs and now they even offer milk services.
“The Generations Foundation. The name speaks for itself. It’s spanned many generations for St. Gabriel’s School in terms of their benevolent help in basi-cally helping with the lunch program and feeding our students. They love them and I think they are two people that need to be not only recognized but embraced. Thank you very much for all the wonder-ful work that you do for St Gabriel’s School and our students”
Jim Daskalakis, Principal, St. Gabriel School

After two years of operating and with the help of many generous donations, they were able to pur-chase their very own office space to continue and grow their foundation. They had help from Buffet La Stanza and now Villa Toscana assists in catering the hot lunches.
Each day, the ‘angels’ of the foundation are serv-ing breakfast, lunch and snacks to children in the communities. Volunteers, lunch supervisors, child-care workers and teachers, are assisting in the fight against hunger. By working closely with volunteers in each school and with the full support of teachers and principals, they are able to provide this service.
Adrian and Natalie also provide needy children with an opportunity to spend time at a camp in the coun-try every summer. They sponsor approximately 50 children for a stay at a Quebec Camping Accredited country camp. Many of the children who spend their summertime on the hot city streets are given the opportunity develop their social skills, helps them mature and develop new skills.
The Generations Foundation also selects graduate students who receive the Generations Foundation Citizenship and Community Award who receive a laptop computer which tributes their meaningful ac-
complishments and contributes to their continued education to enhance their skills in finding employ-ment.
“Adrian and Nathalie are two great people that give to the children and are always there for the children. I’m so happy that they are going to be honored”
Carol Clifton, Volunteer, St. Gabriel School
At Christmas, donations from companies and in-dividuals transform the Generation’s Foundation location into Santa’s workshop which provides thou-sands of new gifts personally wrapped and named as well as a food distribution center where food bas-kets are prepared and delivered to families with the help of volunteers.
The Generations Foundation holds many events such as concerts, theatre evenings, gold tourna-ments and more! They do not receive and govern-ment grants. They are a registered charity and they do not hire any professional fundraisers. The parents and children are not charged for any food, cloth-ing or other goods received and donated foods or goods are not sold. “It’s not about the money, it’s about making a difference” says Adrian, “But if we ever had to charge, we would quit”.
When we asked Benjamin to make the figurines he was very happy to know that his work is
appreciated and was super psyched to make them. He words were “another happy cus-tomer”
Benjamin is an autistic boy living in the Lau-rentians, as an artist there is a rich creative in-ner world inside him that he reveals through creating his art. Besides these figurines, he also illustrates and paints, only animals, which is his passion. His animal figurines are not marzipan so please don’t eat them.
