June was a very busy month at Chartwell and I hope everyone was able to participate in some of
the activities and events that took place. Over the Memorial Day weekend we kicked off Chartwell’s 50th Anniversary festivities. Mel Merritt, son of the founder/developer Al Merritt, said a few words about the development of Chartwell and also spoke from his heart on the meaning of Chartwell to his family. We also reenacted the opening tee shot with Mel using the club and ball that his father used 50 years ago. In June, we hosted our annual Member Guest to a sold out field. Congratulations to Brad Fowler and his committee for conducting such a great event. I heard many positive comments from both members and guests regarding the service, organization, food and golf course. Incidentally, Brad not only chaired the event but he and his guest, Matt Davis, were the overall champions. Congratulations to both for winning against a competitive field. We also opened our new practice facility located on old number two. I encourage you to get out there and take advantage of a well laid out short game facility.
We continue to be a head of budget financially and with membership levels. Financially, we are feeling impact of rising utility and commodity costs. We have also seen a rise in our food cost as the new chef, Chad Stein, becomes acclimated with the kitchen and stocks the shelves with ingredients that will put his signature on entrees.
We anticipate food cost to go down as we move through the season. Membership is very healthy and the board is becoming increasingly confident that one or more of the membership categories will be filled by the close of the season. As of 6/15 golf stood at 422 members while tennis and social were at 96 and 133, respectively. Tim Connolly and his committee continue to be creative and enthusiastic in filling the membership. If you have any prospective members that would like a tour please contact Tim or Tad.
In the kitchen, Chef Chad is starting to hit full stride. Over the last month he has been transitioning the kitchen staff to his management style and every week the team continues to create synergies between them. Our goal in the kitchen and ultimately the dining area is to provide a level of consistent service and quality that will make Chartwell a destination of choice. Chef Chad is very outgoing and wants to hear your comments on the menu. Please introduce yourself if you have not already met him. In the future I am looking forward to his menu selections and spending time in the dining room. The board could not be more pleased that Chef Chad decided to come aboard.

Now that we have hit Chartwell Season, we are in the peak of business. On any given day we’ll serve up to 250 people dinner and up to 100 people lunch. The tennis courts have an average of 21 hours of usage and over 150 tee times
are booked a day. And of course the swimming pool hosts more than 500 bathers each day! To accommodate and provide services to these members and their guests, the Club peaks with more than 150 employees. As you might expect, a lot goes into finding these people, training them and supervising them. The people responsible for that large task are rarely recognized. They are usually not in the limelight or the forefront. They are the right hand people to the department heads. And, if truth be known, they are the worker bees, for not only do they oversee the line staff, but they are usually working side-by-side with them, too. The following are many of these hard working, dedicated supervisors that are responsible for providing the service and experience that we all appreciate:
One specific employee that has made an extremely noticeable impact on the Club is our horticulturalist, Jim Hogan. Because of his talents and efforts, this time of year especially, the Club’s grounds blossom into a garden wonderland. Most of the time, he is a department of one. Jimmy is a designer, nurseryman, landscaper and engineer. To Jim and the assistants of Chartwell, I personally thank you for sharing your talents and dedicating yourself to the service of our members and to each other.

ClubhouseChef Chad continues to put his touches on the culinary department. Friday Night Grill has returned with much fanfare. New a’la carte menus are being developed for debut in July, but many have already been converted to his new crab cakes and salad dressings.
Improvement to the Locker Rooms are being investigated, including but not limited to,1. Interior redesign to improve efficiency
and member value are being considered2. Efforts to improve shoe care system
discussed to improve appearance of locker area and level of service to members
3. Dedicated Guest lockers and staff directive to improve level of service to our guests following new protocol.
TennisReservation forms have been sent to all court captains to reserve their indoor court times for the upcoming bubble season. Please make sure to have all contracts turned into the Tennis Shop by July 15 to secure your court. After July 15 all remaining courts will be made available to other members to reserve.
Our Ladies Interclub match with Gibson Island was a great success! Both clubs fielded 7 doubles teams who battled it out with our Chartwell ladies taking the victory! Chartwell Classic- Sponsorship letters have been mailed and included in the May Chatter. Invitations have gone out to players. The event is the week of August 8th. It has been reduced to a men’s only championship.
GolfJunior Program is in the middle of their very busy season regular clinics and tournaments. Lisa Clarke and Jason Wells and their committee and the Pro shop are doing very well.
The operation of the new practice facility has been implemented and advertised.
SocialJonathan and his staff are up running with Late Night Happier Hour and live music on most Fridays and occasional wine tasting on the patio.
Youth Director Topher and Jonathan have planned a zillion activities for the kids throughout the summer, including the two kids camps (July 5-7 and August 8-12,) movie nights at the pool, on the driving range and after some Junior Golf Clinics, plus surprise activities and games poolside. Topher is also planning an end of summer tween party (ages 9-13). Contact him at [email protected] if you would like to help.
For grown-ups, the Social Committee is also busy. The annual Summer Bash is Friday, July 29 celebrating the Club and EVERYONE who is turning 50 this year! Hawaii 5-O style. This party is for everyone who wants to relax, have fun, dance, eat and drink poolside under the stars. Plus, if it is your birthday, you are FREE! 50th Anniversary events are coming together. The big Labor Day weekend will host a family event poolside with carnival games and fireworks and the Gala Jubilee celebration is being planned for Sunday, September 4.
PoolThe Pool is up and running and very busy. Overall DRD management is doing very well. Minor issues are being handled by DRD, the Pool Committee and Club management. All in all, a very good start to the season!
Reminder that boys may not wear athletic shorts in the pool. Swim shorts are required. Also, swim diapers are not allowed in the main pool.
FinanceMay’s nice weather generated not only increased activity at the Club but also a profitable bottom line that was right on budget. The golf area had a profitable month and overall sales in F&B met revenue expectations. Departmental expenses are still being well controlled while due income, supported by membership growth, continued a positive trend. June, however, was a tougher month missing budget by $40,000 due to decreased golf rounds, and increased expenses in the Food and Beverage and Green departments Year to date, the profit is $16,204, over $46,914 less than forecasted.

Celebrating Our 50th Anniversaryon Memorial Day
Chartwell Golf & Country Club
celebrated its 50th anniversary
by re-enacting the club’s original
opening day festivities. On that day, May 30th,
1961, C. Albert Merritt, founder and developer,
teed up a Spalding golf ball on the #1 tee and hit
the first tee shot that officially open the club and
golf course. His 10 year old son, Mel, who still
resides in Severna Park, ran down the fairway and
retrieved the ball. Mel held onto that ball for 50
years and on this past Memorial Day, he teed up on
the #1 tee with the same ball and hit a shot down
the fairway. This time, Mel’s son Isaac, who is a
junior at Severna Park HS, ran down the fairway
and retrieved the ball for his father. The ball will
be displayed in the club’s trophy case along with
photos of Al Merritt hitting the first ball and Mel
Merritt hitting the re-enactment.
Mel Merritt shared the following Ralph Waldo
Emerson poem in dedication to his Father:

Our 2011 Seniors program is well underway. Through May and June, we have enjoyed MISAGA (Maryland Interclub Senior Golf Association) mixer tournaments
at Norbeck, Argyle, Hobbits Glenn, Chester River, and Prospect Bay; on June 28th, we hosted Manor and Navy. Mixers in July and August are scheduled at Piney Branch, Crofton, Holly Hills, Kenwood, Manor, Navy, Hunt Valley, University of Maryland, and Rolling Road. This is a wonderful opportunity to play some different clubs in the area in a friendly team format and have an enjoyable lunch.
Regular play on Tuesday includes donuts and a $5 prize pool per player. Just show up on Tuesday and the pro shop will set up the foursomes. To sign up for our MISGA Mixers go to ForeTees on our website or call the Pro shop. This year we are also continuing our Senior Player of the Year Award by awarding points for tournament and Regular Play events throughout the year. If you haven’t yet joined, we urge you to come out and enjoy the camaraderie, donuts, some tasty lunches as well prizes for the skilled and lucky. Check the MISGA schedule on the Chartwell Web Site and plan to participate in some great golf.
Steve will designate by tee markers the hitting areas for the day(s).
Soon, if not immediately, each of the two target greens will have a designated colored flag(s) to match the tee markers. This will be the control as to which area will be played to from the various practice areas. Red tee to red flag and Yellow tees to yellow flag.
Practice balls with shag bag will be provided to those wishing to use the area. As in the past, we will allow carts or provide transportation for you.
Each shag bag will have no more than 20 balls. The balls will be Nike/White practice balls. The reason for only 20 is so there will not be hundreds of balls on each of the greens. The members will be asked to retrieve what they hit and, at the minimum, leave the shag bag or bring it back to the bag room.

Fast Play TipsFollow These Fast Play Tips and You’ll Fit Right in at Chartwell !
Golfers who enjoy Chartwell know and understand the time-honored basics of fast play etiquette.
Ready Golf• When a player is at the ball and ready to play, they should go ahead and
play—so long as it’s safe. • Again, if you are not in the line of play, you can move forward and/or
help others find their ball. • It’s not the U.S. Open. If you are on the tee and ready to tee off, go
ahead and tee off. • Putting. Again—it’s not the U.S. Open so putt continuously: if you are
not in someone’s line, go ahead and finish that short putt.
Think AheadAs you walk or ride up to the next shot, start assessing the situation and getting a feel for the shot, the wind, and the yardage. You’ll spend less time analyzing the shot when you get to the ball.As you ride or walk up to the green, you can often learn more about the next shot from in front of the green than on the green. Look for tell-tale slopes, mounds, and swales that will affect the break. Look for where the water will roll off. Often, the best read is the first read. Go with your gut.
Riding in a Cart?• Drop your partner off at their ball, then ride ahead to yours. Switch
drivers if necessary. • Carts on the path? Take several clubs when you walk to the ball so that
you don’t have to walk back to the cart. • If there is a group behind you, limit the time looking for a ball that is
obviously not going to be found to one minute. The rules let you take five minutes but you should try to take less.
Out of the Hole? Putting up a Big Number? Pick Up and Move On...The USGA Handicap System allows a maximum score depending on handicap and par. Navigation• Where you walk and where you park the cart can significantly affect
pace of play. • Park or leave the bag off the green on the side closest to the next tee. • Park or leave your bag off the green on the side closest to the next tee. • Line up your putt while others are putting. • When putting, leave the clubs you used for chipping in line with the
next tee. • Mark your scorecard after leaving the green. • Talk while you walk.
Follow these simple guidelines and always be thinking about how you can play a little faster each hole and you’ll enjoy your golf—at Chartwell or anywhere in the world!
Your place on the golf course is immediately behind the group in front of you, not immediately in front of the group behind you.

There is no one more excited than me that the new short game area on Old number 2 is now open. This area is an instructor’s dream with new bunkers, areas for both bump and run and flop shots, and most importantly an area to hit those crucial 40 yards and in wedge shots. Here are a few friendly reminders to help your short game practice.
Have a planWhen heading down to the short game facility create a plan of the type of work you want to accomplish during your practice session. There are two types of practicing: technique and distance control. During any practice session both types of practicing should be addressed.
Work your way outPart of your plan should be to map out what areas you are going to use on the short game facility during your practice session. I always recommend slowly progressing away from the green. Start in close with short chips, followed by pitch shots and finishing with ½ or ¾ wedge shots.
Routine is goodCreating a routine is a great way to gain confidence and comfort around the green. PGA and LPGA tour players use certain patterns to their practice to become confident in their game. If it is good enough for the guys and girls on TV it is good enough for you. A routine can be the amount of balls you hit to a certain target or the pre-shot routine you create before you hit a shot.
End with creativity When you have accomplished your practice plan for the day take a few minutes to hit a shot you have never hit before, like a 40 yard bump and run with a 5 iron or a flop shot with a 7 iron. This can be a fun way to end your practice session but it also helps build awareness of what you can and cannot do with your game. You might be surprised; you could find a new shot that might be helpful in your next round.

Chartwell Crab Cakes
This recipe yields 8 - 5oz. Crab Cakes, true to our new Club recipe. To prepare more, simply double the ingredients & measurements to yield 16 Crab Cakes. Crab Cake Mix
.5 Cup Worcestershire
.5 Cup Dijon Mustard 1.5 Qt. Mayonnaise .5 Oz. Kosher Salt 1 Oz. Old Bay Seasoning 7.5 Eggs Prepare Mix & set aside. 2.5 Lb. Jumbo Lump Crab Meat .5 Cup Ground Saltine Crackers 1 Oz. Chopped Parsley With your hands, carefully finger through the jumbo lump crab meat, do not break apart. Discard any loose shells you may find. Add 1 Cup of Mix to 2 Lbs. of crab meat. Very gently, Mix all ingredients together in the same bowl thoroughly. Cover and refrigerate for up to 2 hours. When ready to cook, set oven to 350˚ degrees. Spray a cooking sheet with non-stick spray and place hand-molded 5oz. crab cakes evenly spaced on the sheet. To help even & faster browning you may lightly spray the tops of the crab cakes with nonstick as well. Bake for 10-15 minutes or until golden brown to taste, serve Immediately. Bon Appetite!

2011 Chartwell Tennis Classic
T he Chartwell Classic has been a premier tournament on the summer circuit for many years. With members providing the prize money and the
housing, the tournament offers a warm inviting feel for the players. With play being held in the evening hours each match gets the crowds full attention.
This event was historically called the USTA Mid-Atlantic Section Open and has been running since 1996. Below you will find links to previous draws and a list of winner and runners up.

2010 was the first year that Chartwell Golf & Country Club decided to make the event an independent invitational event. The members and the players embraced the chance with open arms and 2011 will be the second year of the invitational format.
