41st Annual Summerset Regatta “Sail the Tradition”

Sponsored by CMCS Labor Day Weekend 2006

    Race, Cruise, Party

Come join in the FUN!! I hope you all read the Summerset promotional letter. West Marine raised the bar when they encouraged Garmin to give us their new 478 GPS for a door prize. I have a 176 and it’s good, but this one is great and comes preloaded. I’ve not seen one yet!! When you add it to the Olsen haul-out and the rest of the things from West Marine and Sailing Services, the value of a door prize ticket, based on 60 boats, with a tee shirt is more than the Cruising Application Fee of $45.00! It may even get better. So if the prizes and shirts are worth more than the application fee, we have to be sure the en-tered boat makes it to the line. Cruisers will ask, "How do we qualify for the GPS drawing?" First, let me tell you that the winner in all of this is the Club and youth sailing. Second, our sponsors tell me if they see participation and a good turn out, they will be back bigger and better next year. Now, what we asking you as a cruising entry and want to qualify for the 478 GPS drawing that you either make a 0900 start or a start after the racers. Even if you do not race, we would appreciate seeing you on the course. What would really be great is if you would participate in the West Marine Coastal Race. You can either get a PHRF rating or call Jerry Pim at 542-0560. He and the CMCS group will give you a handicap. Give them some time to figure your handicape before the application dead-line of August 29. We’ll figure something out for trawlers and other powerboats that cruise down. Summerset has, in the sponsor and door prize phase, far exceeded anything I could have imagined. We have a great committee. If we can turn out 60 boats, no telling what we can do in the future. Plus, we are really going to give much needed support to youth sailing.

AHOY!!! 'GOODIE' GATHERERS NEEDED The deadline is fast approaching for the collection of in-kind/skipper's bag items--August 29th. We're looking for items donated by vendors that can be placed in all the skipper's bags of all registered rac-ing and cruising Summerset skippers. We need at least 75 Coozies, pens, sunscreen samples, key rings, etc. as we anticipate 75 participants in the greatest Regatta of the year! Dee Vaigl has volunteered to be the collector of such goodies--contact her at 945-6146 to make arrange-ments for collecting your donations. Let’s fill those bags and show the Summerset partici-pants that CMCS can really throw a party!!

'Goodie' Gatherer Collector Dee Vaigl 945-6146

SUMMERSET TO DO LIST Have you received your Entry Brochure? If you haven’t received your copy, give Forrest Banks a call. Have your bought your raffle ticket(s) yet? Commit-tee members and Board members have tickets to sell. Donation $5 each or 3 for $12. The lucky ticket holder will win an Offshore Sailing School’s Class Course for two valued at $1,990.00! Reserve a slip at the Naples City Dock and/or con-tact Bob Gerry at 275-4827. If needed, have you reserved a room at the Bayfront Inn on 5th in Naples? Call (239) 649-5800 and ask for CMCS Regatta. Deadline is August 2!!! Registration deadline is Tuesday, August 29 for race entries as well as dinner and cocktail party reservations. RE-MEMBER, NO entries will be accepted at the Skipper’s Meeting. Door prizes are greatly appreciated. Give Elise Missall a call at 489-0422 if you would like to donate one or two or….. 'Goodies' for each Skipper’s Bag are needed. Give Dee Vaigl at 945-6146 a call. Check out the NEW CMCS WEBSITE (www.cmcs-sail.org) for all the latest information on the Summer-set Regatta. Rules and application will also be available on the website.

  • DOOR PRIZES NEEDED And while you are booking your room, we need you to think about Door Prizes!!! We are looking for gift certificates, baskets of cheer or fragrances, hair and nail care, restaurant offers, etc. Any Door Prize that is valued at $200.00 RETAIL will be able to have the Door Prize Sponsor on the t-shirt. All other Door Prize Sponsors will be recognized on the table tent cards at the Sunday Awards Dinner. The deadline for Door Prize Sponsors on the t-shirt is NO LATER than August 1, 2006. • “Did anyone bring a spare outboard?” The third most exciting cruise of the year, the fourth of July Cruise to Franklin Locks, was a huge success. We had slips with electric power for all our boats. The fol-lowing yachts arrived between June and July: Shadowfax Kestrel II Bridget O’Toole Fidelis Island Time Judy Judy Thor’s Hammer Zydeco and Ariel Also arrived: Mullins’, Reekie & Maddix’s mobiles Bobby Lee on a HD Jack & Cyn, the Catalina 27 Eric & Holly mobile Gordon’s family mobile As usual CMCS “ruled” the Locks. We had all the boat slips, the covered picnic area with four large tables and the giant grill for our massive “gang” BBQ’s. Our cock-tail parties were followed by great food every night. On Sunday morning, 10:06 sharp, we loaded our dinghies and set out for Hickey Creek. After a short trip up the river, we made the turn in to the creek. Shirley Maddix was the first person to spot the camel, winning a great prize. The dinghy cruise continued at a moderate pace through the winding creek. Unfortunately, a heavy growth of arugula fouled all the props, making headway more dangerous than imaginable. Along the way, we saw bison and several breeds of horses. We returned to the shelter of the picnic pavilion for the Skip Bo tournament, only to be driven to our boats by a deluge and 30 knot winds. Later that evening, we had a fantastic BBQ and pot luck dinner. Monday, after a late breakfast, we set out for a dinghy cruise upriver. Several outboard motors were feeling the strain from the Hickey Creek arugula fiasco, and refused to perform to CMCS standards, thus requiring many tows. Tuesday, July 4th, Independence Day – We headed down the river. A few boats headed home, while the majority anchored off Ft. Myers for the fireworks. Everybody was invited over to Judy Judy for an ice cream social, com-plete with chocolate syrup and a fresh tray of brownies, provided by Carolyn of Kestrel II. Carolyn Wilson of Bridget O’Toole entertained us each evening at sunset with her beautiful bagpipe music, often accompanied by Ben Preston on the harmonica, and Russell on the verbals. We look forward to next year, for another great trip up to the locks. If you missed it this year, let me know as soon as possible if you intend to join us next year so we can make the necessary reservations.

  • The Firecracker Night Race

came close to a fizzle without a bang!

However, despite dire warnings, the weather cooperated and we had a great race. Even using Government marks, we were able to use the buoy ratings. The weather leg was a beat for the most part, and the 2nd leg was a spinnaker run. Because of concerns about weather ( rightly so ), Jerry Pim on Gopher Baroque was left to race in a class by himself. To his credit, he sailed the entire course despite being offered a chance to have the Race Committee shorten the race for him. He’s a winner! Forrest Banks on Midnight Rider really sailed that boat well and easily won the Spinnaker Class. A new member of CMCS, Greg Davis, finished 2nd in his Beneteau 393, Kokopelli Too and another new member, Joel Andrews, 3rd. On Desperado — Beneteau 343. Joel won the Sunworshippers Race and thought he would give others a chance this time. Beautiful trophies will be awarded at the next General Meeting on Tuesday, August 15. All who participated are urged to attend this meeting to receive adulation and these wonderful objects. Tom Gore

NO SCORES, BUT A GREAT TIME!! Had a great turn-out last month, but due to racing all day in the rain, the paper the RC was using to keep track of things disintegrated!!! So we have no scores. BUT - everyone had a great time, there was steady, shifty wind, and the light rain (with NO lightening) kept everyone really cool. Who knows what the summer weather will dish up for us this Sunday (July 23), but no matter what, we will have a good time, so come on out and sail! Next month, Sunfish Races are scheduled for Sunday, August 20 at the Edison Sailing Center. We will have a Skipper meeting at noon, start at 1 pm and race until we get tired, usually around 4:30 or 5. $10 entry fee plus $10 if you want a club boat - just let me know so I can reserve one for you. 4TH OF JULY CRUISE ON SPINDRIFT WOW, what a 4th of July we spent on Spindrift. Took a chance and called the Ft. Myers Marina (Centennial Harbour Marina is now called Legacy Harbour Marina) on Monday, July 3. Figured they would be booked solid months in advance. No, they had plenty of slips available. The Cape Coral Sailing Club had reserved 12 slips - only 5 of their boats showed up. The marina was more than half empty! Called friends visiting from CT and left a message - did they want to sail up to Ft. Myers for the fireworks and spend the night.....absolutely! We were in our slip ($38) by noon on the 4th, had lunch on the boat, swam in the pool and were sitting at Joe's Crab Shack bar at 3:00 p.m. for the World Cup soccer game, then a delicious dinner. The fireworks barge was being loaded less than 200 yards from our slip! I was glad when they finally hauled it out to the middle of the river! They had a variety of bands all afternoon at Centennial Park - again about 200 decibel-friendly yards from us. Just as the first volley of fireworks went up in front of us, a young entertainer started singing America the Beautiful. Goose bumps. The fireworks were EXCELLENT, and they played patri-otic music the entire fireworks display. The a.c. for our boat had been sitting in the garage 3 1/2 years - never used. Dick & Glenn put it in the hatch-way - plugged it in - worked perfectly. LIFE IS GOOD. Mary Lou & Dick Mullins — s. v. Spindrift

FIRE EXTINGUISHER SAFETY Our July speaker, John Hodgkinson, recommended that we hold our boat fire extinguishers upside down and listen for the powder falling to the opposite end. If you do not hear anything after a couple of attempts, it’s probably time to replace / invest in a new fire extinguisher. A new acronym for fire extinguisher use is as follows: Pull the pin at the top of the extinguisher that keeps the handle from being accidentally pressed. Aim the nozzle toward the base of the fire. Stand approxi-mately 8 feet away from the fire. Squeeze the handle to discharge the extinguisher. If you release the handle, the discharge will stop. Sweep the nozzle back and forth at the base of the fire. Af-ter the fire appears to be out, watch it carefully since it may re-ignite!

    Congratulations -- you did it!!!
