“A melody, a lyric, or a certain harmony can trigger memories,”

says conductor Jeffrey Reed.

JEFFREY REED MUSIC DIRECTOR

6 www.orchestrakentucky.com

Reed has been bringing back the memories as music director of Orchestra Kentucky since he founded it in 2000. Sometimes combining classical and popular music, his concert presentations are singularly authentic, recreating the soundtracks of music’s greatest decades. From the 17th century to our time, his concerts celebrate anniversaries and music milestones, from Beethoven, Mahler and Stravinsky, to Elvis, The Beatles and The Carpenters, drawing on some of the nation’s brightest musical talent.

Reed has worked with Air Supply, Bill Gaither, BJ Thomas, Larry Gatlin, Paul Williams, Peter Tork, Glen Campbell, Keith Emerson, Neil Sedaka, Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis, Jr., Mary Wilson, Melissa Manchester, Chris Young, and many others in appearances with his own orchestra and orchestras in Milan (Italy), St. Petersburg (Russia), and South Korea. Reed has twice appeared with the Royal Philharmonic at London’s Royal Albert Hall at the specific request of Neil Sedaka.

In the United States, Jeffrey Reed has conducted the orchestras of Alabama, Augusta, Charleston, Detroit, Greensboro (NC), Knoxville, Louisville, Memphis, Nashville, Omaha, Phoenix, Portland (ME), Quad Cities (IA), Sacramento, South Bend and Winston-Salem.

Reed has been involved in commissioning world premieres of classical works by legendary pop artists Neil Sedaka, Keith Emerson, Peter Tork, Jimmy Webb, and Italian pops sensation, Giovanni Allevi.

His programming has been nationally recognized. Bestselling author and marketer Seth Godin singled out Jeffrey Reed in his best-selling study of new creativity, “Small is the New Big.” Godin praised his “clever” concerts and praised the “totally different way” Reed approaches programming. Reed is the only musician featured in the book.

In 2015, the University of Louisville named Reed its Alumni Fellow for the School of Music in recognition of his distinguished work in his chosen field. In 2008, he received the Jefferson Award for public service in South Central Kentucky.

In addition to his work with Orchestra Kentucky, Reed served as principal guest conductor of Symphony Orchestra Augusta and has also served as music director of the North Charleston Pops and the Murfreesboro Symphony.

He is represented by agent Rachel Bowron.

PROGRAM NOTES

October 26, 2019Nat King Cole @ 100Nathaniel Adams Cole was born in 1919, in Montgomery, Alabama and died in 1965 in Santa Monica, California. He was hailed as one of the best and most influential pianists and small-group leaders of the swing era. Cole attained his greatest commercial success, however, as a vocalist specializing in warm ballads and light swing. He grew up in Chicago, played piano in his father’s church when he was ten years old, and formed his first jazz group, a trio, when he was fifteen years old. The trio made several instrumental recordings, as well as others that featured their harmonizing vocals. They found their greatest success when Cole began doubling as a solo singer. Eventually, Cole’s piano playing took a backseat to his singing career.

Noted for his warm tone and flawless phrasing, Cole was regarded among the top male vocalists, although jazz critics tended to regret his near-abandonment of the piano. Cole’s popularity allowed him to become the first African American to host a network variety program, The Nat King Cole Show, which debuted on NBC television in 1956. The show fell victim to the bigotry of the times, however, and was canceled after one season; few sponsors were willing to be associated with a black entertainer. Cole had greater success with concert performances during the late 1950s and early ’60s and twice toured with his own vaudeville-style revues. He also acted in several movies in the 1950s. His daughter, the late Natalie Cole, was also a popular singer who achieved her greatest chart success in 1991 with Unforgettable, an electronically created duet with her late father.

PROGRAM NOTES

November 2, 2019Paul SimonPaul Simon, born in New Jersey in 1941, has had a musical career spanning seven decades. His fame and commercial success began as half of the duo Simon & Garfunkel (Art Garfunkel) which was formed in 1956. Simon was responsible for writing nearly all of the pair’s songs, including three that reached number one on the U.S. singles charts: The Sound of Silence, Mrs. Robinson, and Bridge Over Troubled Water. The duo split up in 1970 at the height of their popularity, and Simon began a successful solo career. In the 1970s, he and Garfunkel reunited to record four more successful albums; then reunited again for the famous concert in Central Park, followed by a world tour. In 1986, Simon released Graceland, an album inspired by South African township music, which sold 14 million copies worldwide. He also wrote and starred in a movie and a Broadway musical. In 2003, Simon and Garfunkel reunited once again when they received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. This reunion led to a U.S. tour, followed by a 2004 international encore that culminated in a free concert at the Colosseum in Rome that drew 600,000 people. In 2005, the pair sang in a benefit concert for Hurricane Katrina victims. The pair performed together in April 2010 in New Orleans at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival. On June 3, 2016, Simon released his 13th solo album, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Album Chart and the UK charts.

Simon has earned sixteen Grammys and a Lifetime Achievement Award. In 2001, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and in 2006 was selected as one of the “100 People Who Shaped the World” by Time. In 2011, Rolling Stone named Simon one of the 100 greatest guitarists. In 2015, he was named one of the 100 Greatest Songwriters of All Time by Rolling Stone. Among many other honors, Simon was the first recipient of the Library of Congress’s Gershwin Prize for Popular Song in 2007. In 1986, he was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Music degree from Berklee College of Music, where he currently serves on the Board of Trustees.
