world are here• India• Pakistan• Bangladesh

• Poverty & illiteracy (inability to read or write) are common problems of South Asia

– Indian women usually marry before 18– Start having kids early– Kids are a source of income– Represent security in old age– High infant mortality rate– Lack of education

Section 2- Living with Extreme Weather

• Summer Monsoon-wind system that blows from the SW across Indian Ocean toward S. Asia– Lots of moisture

• Winter Monsoon- wind system that blows from NE Asia to the Ocean – Little moisture

• Monsoons make life difficult because of the extremes between summer & winter– Intense drought followed by

intense rain
