    CHAPTER 1 : INTRODUCTION

    1.1 PRODUCT BACKGROUND

The Mangonel is what many people think of when they think of a catapult. From the Latin word

"manganon" meaning engine of war. The Mangonel was invented by the Romans in 400 BC. The

Mangonel consists of a long wood arm with a bucket (early models used a sling) with a rope

attached to the end. The arm is then pulled back (from natural 90 o angle) then energy was stored

in the tension of the rope and the arm. Then the bucket would be loaded. When released the

Mangonel's arm would return to its equilibrium position, when it came in contact with the beam

the arm would stop but the missiles stored in the bucket would continue to launch toward the

enemy. The Mangonel fired projectiles in an overhead arc, the angle of the path of the projectile

could be determined by a block placed on the beam that stopped the Mangonel's arm by using a

block that stopped the arm earlier than 90 o angle would result in a path angle (above the

horizontal) equal to the the angle between the arm and the 90 o angle. The Mangonel was capable

of firing 1,300 ft. The Mangonel was easy to construct and wheels were added to the design to

    increase mobility.

Based on the entire characteristic and the criteria of the mangonel catapult, we have to

form a group and create our own mangonel catapult to fulfill the project of Design II subject. The

mangonel has to fulfill the condition of the project which is the requirement has been given the

size of the mangonel that should be followed. There are fundamental principles to invent the new

mangonel and necessary to take into consideration important factor such as weight, design, type

of material and the correct angle to get the long distance results.

    1.2 PROBLEM FOR EXISTING PRODUCT

As we knew that mangonel is the invention from 400 BC so there are many problem that we can

see from this original catapult. Major disadvantage of a mangonel are the inconsistent accuracy

because of the material that chose to build the catapult. Most of the original catapult use twisted

rope as the material to throw the projectile. Ropes can lose their elasticity so the accuracy of the

catapult are not too accurate and it cannot survive a long distance of the thrown projectile.

    1.3 PRODUCT SIGNIFICANCE

To obtain the objective and the design specification of this project, a new design of

mangonel catapult must be designed. In the new design of the mangonel, we will consider about

the design, safety, ergonomic, dimension and type of material that used. This mangonel catapult

will produce the long range of thrown projectile than the original catapult. This mangonel also

will use the new design and new type of material that also will help to get the good distance

when the projectile will be thrown.

    1.4 PROJECT OBJECTIVE

    The objectives of this project are;

    1) To comply with Design II Subject requirement to create an Mangonel Catapult

    2) To be qualified in the Mangonel tournament held by Design II Subject

    3) To study the mechanical analysis of the design

    4) To study the history of ancient weapon use in medieval

    5) To build the mangonel based on the qualities of long range effort and Ergonomic

    1.5 PROJECT SCOPE

To finish this project require a scope of work and a systematic plan should be conducted and

follow because this project must go through a various process before we produce it. The scopes

    for this project are:

    i) To lift a maximum weight of 5kg load.

ii) To throw the load with a range between 5 meter to 10 meter.

iii) The size of Mangonel ranges between 30 x 30 x 35 cm

iv) All the design is made by 3D modelling by using solid works software.

    1.7 DESIGN PROCESS

Design process is most important with engineering designs to classified as inventions-devices or

systems that are created by human effort and did not exist before or are improvement over

existing device or systems. Inventions, or designs, do not suddenly appear from nowhere. They

are result from design process is bringing together technologies to meet human needs or to solve

    the problems.
