Changing Demographics Impact Enrollments

• The Midwest and Northeast will experience a 4% to 10% decline in high school graduates between 2009-2014; decrease is worse at public high schools. (WICHE)

• The profile of college-bound students is rapidly becoming more ethnically diverse and female dominant. (NCES, WICHE, ACT, College Board)

• Downward trend in number of students interested in engineering, computer science, and natural science degrees has stopped and is now risen slightly. (ACT, CIRP)

• Age and full-time status percentages relatively unchanged, slight increase in 18-24 age group. (US Dept of Education)

• International student enrollments continue to grow, especially in STEM. (IIE)

Shifts In Ethnic Composition Of College Students

• The number of Hispanic students enrolled in college increased 24% in 2010. – They are now the largest minority group in higher

education, making up 15% of all college students.

• Black and Asian students grew by 5% and 6% respectively

• Enrollment of white (non-Hispanic) students declined by just under 4%
