Change in The General Directorate of Foundation’s Organizational Structure According to the Chapter 49 of the Presidential Decree no.4 published on 15th of July in the Official Gazette, The General Directorate of Foundations become an affiliated organization of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism as a financially autonomous legal entity. According to the organizational verdicts in the Decree; the duties, operations and operational authorities of the General Directorate will remain the same. Council of Foundations will possess the same power and continue working as the highest decision-making body of the Directorate. TUSEV Launched New Project on Civil Society-Public Sector Dialogue TUSEV launched the Monitoring and Enhancing the Enabling Environment for Civil Society Project, financed by the European Union on May 2018, within the Civil Society Law Reform program area. The project, which will continue until March 2020, aims to contribute to the enhancement of an enabling legal and fiscal environment for civil society and to increase civil society organisations’ (CSO) participation in policy and decision-making processes. The project also aims to raise awareness on legal and fiscal framework regarding CSOs, monitor and enhance the enabling environment for civil society and strengthen the public sector-CSO cooperation. TUSEV Contributed to ICNL Civic Freedom Monitor The International Center for Not-for-Profit Law’s (ICNL) Civic Freedom Monitor provides up-to-date information on legal issues affecting civil society in 54 countries and 8 multilateral organizations. As part of this initiative, TUSEV provides an overview of key legal issues relating to civic freedom, with a focus on legal barriers to civil society activity in Turkey. TUSEV Attended the EFC, DAFNE and AGNA Meetings TUSEV attended meetings of its international partners. In the Philanthropy Scrum meeting, organized by the European Foundation Center (EFC), Donors and Foundations Network in Europe (DAFNE) and European Venture Philanthropy Association (EVPA) co-creating a common market for philanthropy was discussed. DAFNE summer meeting which took place on 28th of May highlighted sectoral developments and EFC Annual General Assembly and Conference which was held with “Culture Matters: Connecting Citizens & Uniting Communities” theme focused on philanthropy’s relationship with art and culture. TUSEV also attended CIVICUS AGNA (The Affinity Group of National Associations) General Assembly between 30th May and 2nd June 2018, which was held in Tbilisi, Georgia. Monitoring Matrix on Enabling Environment for Civil Society Development Turkey Country Report 2017 is Published TUSEV published the Monitoring Matrix on Enabling Environment for Civil Society Development Turkey Country Report 2017. Prepared in line with the Monitoring Matrix methodology developed by the Balkan Civil Society Development Network (BCSDN), the report presents the state of civil society in terms of Basic Legal Guarantees of Freedoms, CSO Financial Viability and Sustainability, and Government-CSO Relationship. The Fifth Term of the Emerging Leaders in Philanthropy Program Ended TUSEV has been implementing the Emerging Leaders in Philanthropy Program under Philanthropy Infrastructure Development in Turkey Project with an aim to enhance the dialogue among professionals working in areas related to philanthropy. The fifth term of the program took place with the participation of 17 civil society professionals, from January to June 2018. The program covered different aspects of philanthropy including individual giving, donor relations and donor management along with legal and fiscal legislation concerning civil society organizations. Participants had the opportunity to share their knowledge and experiences with each other and learn from the experts. TUSEV Made a Study Visit to London TUSEV made a study visit to London between 4th and 6th of July and met with organizations working in philanthropy and giving. Within the scope of the visit, TUSEV joined the Giving Circle event that was organized by The Funding Network and a workshop on the Giving Circle model. TUSEV also visited Charities Aid Foundation, and shared information and experiences on the current situation of civil society and giving practices in Turkey. Unlocking Philanthropy’s Potential Report is Published Worldwide initiatives for Grantmaker Support (WINGS), which is a network of more than 100 philanthropic associations and support organizations in 40 countries around the world, published Unlocking Philanthropy’s Potential Report as a guide for foundations, individual donors, along with development and humanitarian aid organizations. The guide covers the ways that funders can increase the impact and sustainability of their funds and how they can contribute in creation of a philanthropy support ecosystem. Grantmakers East Forum 2018 Will be Held in Budapest Grantmakers East Forum (GEF), which is a thematic network functioning under the European Foundation Center (EFC) with the purpose of improving civil society and philanthropy, will be held in Budapest, Hungary on 15-17 October 2018. Organized for the 23rd time this year, the theme of the forum is "Reframing Civil Society: Actors, Values, Tools” and it will focus on the role of the foundations in overcoming problems that civil society face with and new techniques for promoting social cohesion. Prepared by the Committee on Legal Affairs and Human Rights, the report focuses on new legislative restrictions imposed on NGO activities in several member countries, including Turkey. Balkan Civic Practices Special Edition on Promoting Civic Space is Published Balkan Civic Practices Special Edition on Promoting Civic Space Report prepared by Balkan Civil Society Development Network (BCSDN) is published. The report presents concrete problems and potential solutions to shrinking of civic space, but also analyzes issues that have not been addressed yet and can be considered as factors threatening the civic space in the region. The Winners of 35th Aydın Doğan International Cartoon Competition is Announced The winners of the Aydın Doğan International Cartoon Competition, which is held by Aydın Doğan Foundation for the 35th time this year to promote reconciliation, love, amity, freedom and peace via cartoons, have been announced. With a jury formed of world-renowned cartoonists and artists, the competition had over 8.800 artists joining from 137 countries with approximately 85.000 works until today. This year, Dokhshid Ghodratipour (Iran) and Jugoslav Vlahovic (Serbia) shared the first place while Shahrokh Heidari (Iran) won the second place and Krzysztof Grzondziel (Polonya) was awarded with the third place. Living Together: Fostering Cultural Pluralism through the Arts Report is Published by IKSV The Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts (IKSV) published Living Together: Fostering Cultural Pluralism through the Arts Report. Co-authored by Dr. Feyzi Baban from Trent University and Dr. Kim Rygiel from Wilfrid Laurier University, the report focuses on the role of culture and the arts in facilitating the long-term integration of newcomers and alternative forms of living together in societies that are increasingly diverse and pluralistic, especially in the context of migration. The report presents a summary of academic reviews and discussions on social inclusion, citizenship and living together, showcases good practices both from Europe and Turkey, surveys and evaluates creative initiatives that work towards fostering cultural pluralism by taking the arts and culture at the centre of their activities. The Archaeological Research in the Ancient City of Metropolis, supported by the Sabancı Foundation, starts its Season 2018 The excavations of the Ancient City of Metropolis, with permission and contributions by the General Directorate of Cultural Heritage and Museums, Ministry of Culture and Tourism, supported by the Sabancı Foundation, has been revealing the mysteries of history for 28 years. The fieldwork of this international archaeological project started on 20th July with a team of scientists from both local and overseas universities led by Prof. Dr. Serdar Aybek, Head of the Department of Archaeology, Manisa Celal Bayar University. This year, the "City of Mother Goddess” Metropolis will host excavations in the cult area called “Zeus Krezimos”, which was discovered in 2015. The aim of these excavations focusing on the terrace area where the sacred point is situated, and its adjacent area is to develop understanding of the religious life in Metropolis. TEMA Foundation Presented its Eco-Politics Declaration to Political Parties in Turkey Prior to the General Elections Turkish Foundation for Combating Soil Erosion, for Reforestation and the Protection of Natural Habitats (TEMA) Foundation has been preparing Eco-Politics declarations offering suggestions for solutions to environmental problems to the politicians, prior to the last five parliamentary elections and three municipal elections. The aim of the Eco-Politics is to guide Turkish politicians on how to implement effective governance for protecting the ecosystem and to inform the electorate on sustainable life principles. TEMA has prepared the 2018 Eco-Politics Declaration before the elections on June 24, about why and how to protect the ecosystem and handed it to the representatives of the political parties in Ankara, with the hope that they will adopt these suggestions in their political program. Spastic Children’s Foundation of Turkey Starts the Steptember Project Steptember Project, of which The Spastic Children’s Foundation of Turkey has been the country representative for the last four years, will be held between September 4 and October 1 simultaneously in eight countries worldwide in 2018. In Steptember, participants within teams of four will take 10.000 steps daily and collect donations by mobilizing their networks. Donations collected through the project will be used to provide physiotherapy, psychological and social support, special education and early intervention consultancy to the children with Cerebral Palsy.
