1: What’s a Gerund?
• Verb + -ing
*walking *drinking
NOTE! stopping smoking dying
• It’s a NOUN.– So it can be a subject or object.
• Skateboarding is dangerous.
• Drinking a lot of coffee is unhealthy.
• Negative = not + (verb) –ing– Not exercising is bad for you.
– The doctor suggested not drinking so much coffee.

• Group 1: Verbs that must come with gerunds:

• *the first verb can be any verb tense!

• * the first verb can be any verb tense!
– I admit leaving. (present simple)
– I was admitting leaving. (past progressive)
– I have admitted leaving. (present perfect)
– I admitted leaving. (past simple)
– I will admit leaving. (future)
• The 2nd verb must be a gerund.

• Group 2: go + -ing
“go” -ing (activities)
