The games between New York ProAm and Philadelphia (formerly sponsored by PYAA) have been a rich part of
Philly basketball history for over 56 years and counting. The Philadelphia Youth Athletic Association was an
outgrowth of Haddington playground (West Philly) with Vic Harris, Tricks Murphy, Rev. Sol Murphy, Gerald Redd,
Blinky Brown, Dr. Archie Evans and others in the early 50s. Some of the youngsters during that period were Wilt
Champberlain, John Chaney, Bob Gainey, Gerry Smith, Claude Gross, Sonny Lloyd, Jerry Ford, Jay Norman, Hal Lear,
Bill Showell, Jackie Moore, Leon Whitley and others. Many programs have evolved from the early efforts of PYAA
such as the New York vs. Philadelphia (1956) Classic, Philadelphia Pioneers Tack Club (1960), the Charles Baker
League (1960), the Sonny Hill League (1969), and the Hartford Youth Association (1978). Today’s presenter of the
game is collegefairmagazine (an outgrowth of PYAA) continues the rich basketball legacy, rivalry, and traditional
“bragging rights” between two major cities (New York and Philadelphia), the hotbeds of basketball talent.
The records show that there was a girls championship team (1956) called: The Rocketts (Members: Carol Levister,
Jean Green, Charlotte Shelton, Easter Macy, Dora Street, Margaret Garrison, Lucinda and Betty Ann Mackrey and
Connie Morgan). Other notable athletes include: Walli Jones, Earl (The Pearl) Monroe, Chink Scoot, Guy Rodgers,
Sonny Hill, Big and Little Bobby Jones, George Mack, Russ Gordon, Ty Shields, Joe “Baseline” Williams, Trooper
Washington, Tee and Joe Parham, Ted Blunt, Ty Britt, Walt Bryd, Jim Washington, Hubbie White, John Shannon,
Wilie Sojourner; and from New York there was Cal Ramsey, Satch Sanders, Johnny Green, Jackie Jackson, Tony
Jackson, Connie Hawkins, Roger Brown, Pablo Robertson, Charlie Scott, Nate Archibald, etc. There is much more to
the history of this rivalry and traditional bragging rights that Rev Sol Murphy, Alphonsio Jacobs, and Otis Reese
would always tell you or anyone within ear shot given the opportunity presented itself or not; they would still tell
you! The current story tellers are: John Chaney, Claud Gross, and Jay Norman etc. who without hesitation they
have many stories to share about legions, traditions, and growing up in Philadelphia. Collegefairmagazineis proud
to continue the stories, the legacy, and the traditions, so welcome to the 56 New York (ProAm) vs. Philadelphia
Scholarship Basketball Classic express. The proceeds will establish a scholarship in the name of Rev. Sol Murphy
and Cecil Watkins (original sponsors) at CCP to make book expense awards to college students, as well as game
trophy to be awarded to the City (New York or Philadelphia) with the most wins of all games played.
New York ProAm Seating: Gena Wells and Wade Williams, Standing: Chirst Poveromo, Jessie Williams, Jamal Laforce, Charles Coleman Back, Row: Derrick Pinnock, Simon Driver.
