PRAYER BEFORE COMPETITIONS

Heavenly Father, let us be witnesses to Your Love through our activities today.

Help us put the same effort into You as we will into our competitions.

Remind us that we are called to give our best and to finish the race while caring for others along the way.

Thank you for giving us the opportunity to fellowship with our brothers and sisters throughout the region.

May we play fair, show kindness to each other, and always do Your Will.

Keep us safe from injury and harm as we bring out the best in each other.

In all that we do, may we always give You the glory.

We ask this through Your Most Holy Name. Amen.

RECESS TIME!

DESCRIPTION

Do you still remember what it was like to have recess time in school? Whether it was 5 minutes of playing kick ball outside, 10 minutes of dodge ball, or even just being able to enjoy the outdoors, those were the times we looked forward to while in school.  Recess Time is an organized gathering that consists of several activities that help foster fellowship among our fellow brothers and sisters in Christ.  It also promotes healthy living by staying active and encourages positive sportsmanship. In Matthew 18:4, Jesus says, “Whoever humbles himself like a child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.”  So let’s all enjoy each other’s company as children of God, and let’s have fun!

ORIGINAL CHRISTIAN DANCE CREATIVE

DESCRIPTION

Dancing is FUN! It’s FREEING! And it’s powerful!  God gave us this wonderful gift to express ideas, emotions or tell a story. The goal of the Original Christian Dance Creative is to glorify God in a very dynamic, imaginative, exciting and inspirational way.

Create an OG Christian Dance Creative that embodies “Christus Lux Mundi” (Christ the Light of the World). Whether through song selection, skits, props, and even videos, what can you do to teach and encourage these values to your fellow brothers and sisters in Christ through dance? How will you express these traits through your creativity? That’s the name of the game!

»Finding the LIGHT Blinded by what the world has to offer, the Lord asks us to open our eyes to see what He can offer; a life of true freedom, happiness, holiness, joy, purity, and his unconditional love and mercy. The light is a symbol of hope that will help guide you through the dark times in your life. Through the passion of Christ we witness the light of hope as we carry our crosses with the Lord. Our Lord is our light and our salvation. Our Lord speaks to each of us in a very personal way which only we can understand. When we think of Mary, we assume that she was always in the light of the Lord. But like us she also experienced her own darkness. She never knew what would happen to her son Jesus. It was her trust in the Lord that allowed her to always find hope. Through her experiences we can count on her for help to bring us to the light.

performances will be judged largely on how the performance conveys the message. » Performances are encouraged to use props, costumes, and visuals.

Note for Visuals: Make sure the visuals have good contrasting colors that won’t wash out on a projector.

» Each performance must be under 4 minutes and 15 seconds. Time starts when music starts. A performance over 4 minutes and 15 seconds will be disqualified. Do not go over.

» A mix of 1-5 songs may be used for the performance. Secular songs may be included. At least one song must be Christian or inspirational. Any music with explicit or suggestive lyrics will be automatically disqualified.

REALLY SHORT FILM: THE NEW EVANGELIZATION

DESCRIPTION Film has a unique and powerful way of capturing life and conveying a message.  This year we are challenging you to use your God‐given talents to express the New Evangelization! “Evangelization will always contain as the foundation, centre and, at the same time, the summit of its dynamism‐‐ a clear proclamation that, in Jesus Christ salvation is offered to all men, as a gift of God's grace and mercy…The new evangelization is not a matter of merely passing on doctrine but rather of a personal and profound meeting with the Savior.” – Blessed John Paul II

Create a Really Short Film. Seeing as how we are in The Year of Faith - Pope Benedict XVI’s special call to rediscover and relearn our Catholic faith while renewing our zeal for it - what better to be in celebration of this year than to create a film based on Blessed Pope John Paul II’s message to evangelize the world? The film can be your personal interpretation of making the New Evangelization come to life, whether it’s evangelizing your family, your friends, strangers who know nothing about the faith, and even those who were baptized but have walked away from the Church. These Really Short Films will be used as a way to evangelize – to show them on Facebook, at camps, on tumblr. It’s a way to showcase our faith!

RULES & REGULATIONS » The Really Short Film may be a narrative, an awareness video, or a commercial. » The Really Short Film can be as short as 1 minute but it must be under 3 minutes and 15

seconds. » No one over 22 years of age is allowed to help with any filming, editing, or production. » There is no age limit for the persons in the film (e.g. grandparents, parents, etc.). » REMINDER: Before filming inside a Church, ask permission from the parish or priest. Always

be respectful and reverent inside a Church – He is truly present in the Blessed Sacrament.

ENTRY & SUBMISSION DETAILS » Open competition: There is NO entry limit per region. Only 1 (one) entry per person. » All entries should be showcased at the regional Precon. » TO SUBMIT FOR CONFERENCE: Please upload the video to youtube or vimeo first, then

submit via private link (youtube or vimeo) to [email protected] by Friday, JUNE 20th. 11:59pm (depending on the area). Please label the Email Subject with “Really Short Film 2014: [INSERT REGION & NAME]”

» Top 3 Really Short Films will be shown at Conference and displayed on the CFC Youth website.

EVANGELISTIC T-SHIRT DESIGN

DESCRIPTION

The shirt you wear makes a statement, whether you notice it or not. A shirt’s design, colors, and theme can be what jumpstarts a conversation amongst your peers or strangers. In CFC- Youth, what you wear can be the icebreaker to start a conversation, and evangelize to others. Since this is an evangelistic tool, and NOT a conference t-shirt, the details of conference (i.e. date and location) are NOT to be added to the t- shirt. The bible verse is required to be on the shirt, but the goal of the design is to represent Christ.

 RULES & REGULATIONS

ß T-shirt entries must represent CFC Youth as a whole. Its design should be able to spark

interest from peers and strangers in order to evangelize. ß T-shirt entries must have a Christian-based theme related to the conference theme, “Christus

Lux Mundi” (John 8:12 NAB) (Christ the Light of the World). ß Areas/Regions are free to select the base color of the shirt. Designs may be printed on both

sides, but is not required. Designs cannot have more than 3 colors per side. ß Be creative and make a bold statement but remember to keep the sacredness of the

message you want to convey. For example: DO NOT put “I’m homies with Jesus” or have an image of Mama Mary wearing sunglasses, etc.

ß Best examples of Christ-centered t-shirt designs: God is Enough Conference (Ohio, 2005), Love Conference (Florida, 2008), and Beloved Conference (Virginia, 2011).

 ENTRY & SUBMISSION DETAILS

» Only one entry per area/region is allowed. » Submit entries saved as a png or jpeg files along with a brief explanation of the design via

email to your local CFC Youth Precon Competitions Committee. Please use subject heading: “Evangelistic T-Shirt Design 2014: [INSERT AREA]”

» NOTE TO REGIONAL WINNERS: ß Please submit entries saved as a png or jpeg files to [email protected] by Friday,

June 20, 2014. Please use subject heading: “Evangelistic T-Shirt Design 2014: [INSERT REGION]”.

ß Must print at least two shirts for conference to be presented some time during conference.

ß Please include a paragraph that summarizes and describes the inspiration of the T- Shirt. Also, please elaborate on the T-Shirts design and what the details mean. (This paragraph summary will be read aloud during the T-Shirt design presentation. Make it sound exciting and interesting!)

DEFENDERS OF FAITH

DESCRIPTION Do you know our Catholic faith? How well do you know what we believe in? Many “cradle Catholics” just go through the motions, but they don’t know a lot of the basics.  If we are to call ourselves Christians, we should get to know Christ.  Know your faith. Know Christ.

Test your faith in this competition! Teams of 3-5 members will be challenged to answer questions dealing with our Catholic faith.

RULES & REGULATIONS » In each round, the moderator will ask the questions and the judges will provide the answers

and the scores. » There will be 3 rounds.

ß Round 1: A Jeopardy-style round with multiple choice and true/false questions. One of the participants will choose the topic and difficulty of the question. *NOTE: If a multiple‐choice question is answered incorrectly, there is ONE chance for the other teams to steal the points.

ß Round 2: A lightning round of short answer and fill-in questions. *No points may be stolen in this round.

ß Round 3: The Final Judgment. In this question, the teams must “defend themselves” against a scenario where their beliefs will be challenged. Each team will have 5 minutes to confer with each other and present their answer in a 1-2 paragraph written response. *NOTE:  The judges will score each written response. But only the top 2 written responses will be read to the audience.

» The questions are divided into four different categories: 1) What We Believe, 2) How We Celebrate the Christian Mysteries, 3) How We Are to Have Life in Christ, and 4) How We Should Pray. Questions will not be taken word for word, but any topic from the YOUCAT may be asked.

» The moderator must read the ENTIRE question, before a participant can buzz in. » Only one person per team can answer the question. Teammates are NOT allowed to confer

with each other. *NOTE: To help regulate, the person buzzing in should step away from the other team members.

» The team must go through a full rotation before another member can answer again. Each member must be given a chance to answer.

» Each team will be allowed to use their own Bible, The Catechism of the Catholic Church, and YOUCAT throughout the competition.

» A team or member may be disqualified for poor sportsmanship or for any lack of charity to the other teams.

ENTRY & SUBMISSION DETAILS » Only one entry per area/region is allowed. » NOTE TO REGIONAL WINNERS: Please send the team’s roster with the team contact

information (name of contact, area, cell phone, email) to [email protected] by Friday, JUNE 20, 2014. Please label the Email Subject with “Defenders of Faith 2014: [INSERT REGION]”

APPENDIX: AMAZING RACE.

SUGGESTED FLOW OF AMAZING RACE

OPTION 1: MATRIX ROTATION ß Everyone starts at the same time. First team to complete all the stations wins. ß Each team starts at a different station. Each station should be prepared for overlap –

prepare two sets at each station. ß Try to avoid stations causing traffic with a bottleneck effect. ß Judges should be assigned per team to monitor and facilitate. Teams should still be timed. ß Any overlap time over stations should be subtracted from their total time. ß A suggested “landing station” should be assigned so that the finishing teams can be easily

identified.

OPTION to Avoid: Everyone starts at the same time and at the same place. This is chaotic… so try to avoid setting it up this way.

OPTION 2: STAGGERED TIME ß Teams will be released onto the Amazing Race course in a staggered fashion – that is, in 5-10

minute increments depending on the set up of the course. ß A key element of this set-up is to have the rest of the teams hidden before the start to avoid

teams having an advantage over each other. The teams waiting to start should not be able to see the other teams running the course before they actually run through it.

ß Another key component is to have an alert and accurate timekeeper. ß Each team will have a separate start and end time because the teams are staggered. ß Any overlap time should be recorded by the station leader and should be subtracted from

their total time. ß Each station should be prepared for overlap – prepare two sets at each station. ß In this option, judges per team are not required because the course will be entered one team

at a certain time.
