Maria Lee

(Cancare

Centre, www.cancarecentre.org.au),

As the year 2010 is still fresh, I like to wish everyone a very blessed year to be filled with the peace of love of God. The theme of this issue of the Quarterly Bulletin is still "Year of the Priest". At the beginning of the year, let us give a thought to vocation.

There is a message from the Brisbane Archdio-cese website that describes vocation very well. I like to share with you by quoting "Priesthood is more than celebrating Mass and telling people about God. It is about knowing the central call of one's life and giving one all for this call. Priests are called to be fortright messengers for hope, strong community leaders and spiritual guides for both the lost and the faithful".

Sydney has a rich diversity of Chinese Catholic communities but to my memory, there is hardly any young men and women entering the seminary or religious order in the past 20 years. It is a way for us to express our love for God by encouraging our sons and daughters to answer His calling. As Jesus said "many are called but few are chosen"; putting Jesus' word in the context of 2010 it is "few are called and far less fewer are chosen".

Let us keep praying for vocation coming from our community and keeping our minds open to encourage and support those young men and women who are contemplating on their calling. May the peace of God be with you always.

Christmas Forever Fr Vlad

The Dominican mystic Meister Eckhart says that God the Father is continuously giving birth to His Son. This means that the Incarnation is never a one-time event. Jesus Christ is being begotten by the Father every single moment, here and now, un-til the end of time.

Christmas which is a commemoration of that historical event wherein “the Word was made flesh” (Jn 1. 14) reminds us that Jesus was born in our midst fulfilling the prophecy of Isaiah of the Immanuel, “God is with us”. Therefore the celebra-tion of Christmas is our encounter with the imma-nent God. He becomes a pilgrim-God with His people in a pilgrimage towards Himself.

The continuous re-birthing of Jesus is expedi-ent because of the need of creation destroyed by sin to be transformed back to its “Christic form”. St. Paul tells us that creation continuous to groan as it experiences the pangs of birth (Rom. 8:22). There is a re-birthing of the cosmos every single moment since creation and until the end of time; new forms of life emerge; new species reborn; new discover-ies; new inventions. Creation continuous to ex-plode albeit in creative silence. “The whole crea-tion groans together with the Holy Spirit within ourselves making us His sons and sets our whole being free” (Rom 8:23). God, through His powerful Word, never stops charging creation with the gran-deur which can only come from His Wisdom. The Child in God continuous to play with the imprints

of His feet which fills every single corner of the universe. These vestiges carry in themselves the likeness of His image and therefore charged with His goodness and perfection: “Creation is charged in the grandeur of God" (Gerard Manly Hopkins). That is why after the creation of the universe, God saw that it was good and yet after creating man, He saw that it was very good (Gen. 1:31). That is be-cause man is the apex of creation.

During Christmas God did not just “become flesh” but he became a child: Innocent. Pure. Help-less. Powerless. Unimaginably an awesome wonder to behold! This reminds us of that wonderful truth that each one of us is a child of God: beloved by the Father; heir of the Kingdom. It is our greatest identity; a gratuitous gift which we do not even deserve. The baby-Jesus in the crib, smiling and with open arms reminds us of the joy of the Father reverberating His voice which we heard during the Baptism (Lk. 3:22) and the Transfiguration of Je-sus (Lk. 9:35): “This is my Beloved Son.” And the same voice reverberates throughout the heavens when we were baptized, as if the Father is also say-ing to us “You are my beloved son in whom I am well pleased.” Such is the joy of the Father when He created us.

Whenever I see the baby Jesus in the crib, I see myself, lying there. I see God Father smiling at me, exploding with joy.

Such is the joy and blessing of Christmas.

From Family Camp to My Purpose of Life SC

The 2009 Christmas family camp was held at Moss Vale. It was the first time that my husband would accompany me. Normally I would be there by myself or with friends. Most likely I would have asked my younger son to join, but the expected reply would be ‘I don’t know people in there or not interested’. The same with my husband, he is the least expected to go as he is not yet a Christian.

We joined the camp simply because I wanted to be out of the house during the Christmas period. It would be too quiet just to have the two of us dur-ing this festive season. A few friends warned us of this empty-nest syndrome falling on us too soon and too sudden.

We went there as a getaway, not expecting anything. We listened to the talks on the first 2 days – impressed but vaguely grasped. I went to the reconciliation on the second night – relieved but still loaded with uncertainty. We watched the talents of the young people on the last day show, amused but a bit envious. The reason of all this contradicting feeling was partly because of the loss of two family members in the last two years.

In August 2007, my Dad was hospitalized in Hong Kong mainly due to diarrhoea and high tem-perature. Within a day, some complication arose, and he was unconscious.

Within three weeks, he left us without saying a word. It just gave nearly every family member enough time to visit him for the last time in the hospital.

My Dad was one of my heroes in my life. He did not have much education, but tried hard to give us the education that we would ask for. In his last two years of life, he always asked about this ques-tion of “What’s the purpose of my life?”, or “Why am I here?”

For a few times, I tried to talk him out of his distress, but could not get far with my limited life experience.

My younger son went to Hong Kong for the funeral. It was his first time being involved at that close level. Two years later, also in August, my younger son had a tragic accident while riding his motor bike in the national park with a few friends. He didn’t even get a chance to go to the hospital. It was a big shock to us and again there was no good-

bye. It turned my life upside down, swapped my days into nightmares, broke all my dreams, and scooped a hole in my heart.

When such a tragedy happens in a family, one’s “fight and flight” psychological system will kick in. In the first four months, there were so many things to take care of among all the emo-tional denial and work uncertainty that there was no time to hesitate or get sick. We battled through all the drama like a zombie, during which I went back to Hong Kong two times, and came back just in time for the CCC Christmas family camp.

It’s the first time that my husband would ac-company me to this kind of church camp. Over the years, it was only the children’s baptism and con-firmation events that would bring him to the church.

Surprisingly, he was impressed by the talk and presentation ideas by Fr Edward. Father’s message had touched his inert button, and aroused resonant waves. He even started to sit in the Catechism class and has been reading the Bible and class notes on most nights. We are looking forward to the Bible group for the fourth time and many more to come.

Looking back, we have lost a part of our family like losing a part of our body. Days are filled with pain and sorrow like the dead end of a tunnel. However, this has also brought us closer to the Church, and made us realise that the purpose of life is to find God, follow Christ’s way and put the trust in Him. To some people, the timing and participa-tion at the camp is a routine activity nearly every year, but to us it is like a miracle.

With God’s timing, on the day following the camp, I was at home feeling very lonely and miser-able. I called up Joanna and asked for Father’s time to come and bless my house. Like another miracle, Angel was able to arrange it and turned up at my place in a couple of hours amidst Father’s very tight schedule.

Now I can feel that when one is desperate and grieving, the church support can make a lot of dif-ference and bring immense peace of mind. It is our most grateful thanks to the organisers of the camp and everyone involved. Every bit of support is much appreciated and we need God’s grace to live on.

We are very honoured to have a lot of priests

contributing articles to this Quarterly bulletin.

Fr Vlad, parish priests of Lindfield, had

kindly agreed to let us reprint his article in

this issue. Other fathers in Hong Kong, USA,

Perth and of course our ‘locals’ Fr Mo and Fr

Leung, have agreed or have already put in arti-

cles in our Quarterly. May God continue to

bless them to guide us in living the faith.

This publication is available on our website.

Once again the new look “Voices of Youth” welcomes you! Hope you had enjoyed the last issue and with your thoughtful prayers the team will continue to produce greater things for you to read. So where are you right now? Are you sitting in front of your computer reading this while still surfing ‘facebook’, or on the bus and train going to school and work? In today’s modern society time is crucial. Everybody seems so busy that we sometimes forget what is or should be the most important to us. Do we treat our faith with importance? Is it your priority? Do you focus on your faith only when you feel like it and put it aside when there are “more important” things to do? Are you reading this right now since you have nothing else better to do? Or is it by chance that this page of the Quarterly is somehow opened amongst all the piled up documents on your desk? Do not be ashamed if this is you because I was once like that. Going to church seemed like an obligation. Reading the bible, oh no thanks! Did I pray before? Yes, but only when I needed help. God has blessed my faith to change and to grow in my relationship with Him. It has become my lifestyle now. Going to church, reading the bible or praying is like in simple terms, talking to God. Do you like talking to your friends? But how many can boldly say I LIKE TALKING TO GOD, I TALK TO HIM EVERYDAY, EVERY SECOND AND EVERYTHING I DO IS THE RESPONSE TO MY CONVERSATION WITH HIM. I must say I’m still not strong enough to be totally that bold but will always strive for that goal. For us Catholics this is our life’s goal – to have greater relationship with God. You might ask: it is such a touch journey and so time consuming how did the people before us do it? This brings us to what we are going to talk about in this issue – Saints. So how do Saints do it? How can they continue to be so dedicated to their faith even against all odds. How can they give the importance and priority that God deserves? We will learn from our favourite Saints.

"Love proves itself by deeds, so how am I to show my love? Great deeds are forbidden me. The only way I can prove my love is by scattering flowers and these flowers are every little sacrifice, every glance and word, and the doing of the least actions for love." These are the beautiful words of St Thérèse of Lisieux –“Little Flower”. Her spirituality is based on “The Little Way”. She was a French Carmelite nun. Although she lived a short and un-heroic life she served God with a simple and a great heart. She loved God in the simplest of things. We might sometimes feel we are nothing or cannot do great things, but it is these little things but with great love for God that St Thérèse says to keep God's kingdom alive. ‘I AM A CATHOLIC’ IS A STRONG STATEMENT! BUT

ONLY TAKES A SIMPLE ACTION OF LOVE WITH A SINCERE HEART FOR GOD TO PROVE IT! GIVE GOD YOUR PRIORITY! With my simplest heart for you, Your Brother In Christ,

Often if you have lost something, you are asked to pray to St Anthony of Padua, also known as the ‘finder of lost articles’. St Anthony of Padua was born in 1195 in Portugal, and lived only to the young age of thirty six before he passed away in 1231, but the short time he was on earth was enough to become known as a public preacher. He joined the Franciscan order in 1221, becoming a Franciscan in the hope of shedding his own blood and becoming a martyr for his beliefs. An ordination of Dominicans and Franciscans in the year 1222 became the chance to prove his knowledge, when asked to give a short sermon. As he began to speak, his knowledge become obvious and soon after this ordination, he was assigned to preach in northern Italy. Many preachers in Anthony’s day had lifestyles which contrasted sharply to lives of the poorer people to whom they preached, and so their teachings of living simply were often ignored. Anthony however was well received by the community as he showed genuineness in gospel living, teaching by example as opposed to just words. St Anthony is a great example of the Catholic faith, being a person who was living the gospel as opposed to just preaching it. His level of devotion to God and willingness to preach the good news is something we should all strive to achieve. We should all seek to live by St Anthony’s standards as opposed to just praying to him when we lose something. Because if we replicate even just a little of his devotion, we would all become better Catholics, and better people.

All for now until we meet again. Let the Saints be your role model as you continue to live the gospel. Get your priorities right! For simple love not for heroic deeds, for spiritual growth not for materialistic wealth, live the gospel as opposed to just preaching it! Anyway remember to continue to pray for all the priests this year and also the youths as they continue to serve the Lord!

Let Our HEARTS MELT! Let Our SPIRITS BURN! IN YOUR NAME!

- THE NEW TEAM - VOICES OF YOUTH -

Christopher was a Canaanite 12 cubits (18 ft) tall and with a fearsome face. While serving the king of Canaan, he took it into his head to go and serve the greatest king there was. He went to the king who was reputed to be the greatest, but one day he saw the king cross himself at the mention of the devil. On thus learning that the king feared the devil, he departed to look for the devil. He came across a band of marauders, one of whom declared himself to be the devil, so Christopher decided to serve him. But when he saw his new master avoid a wayside cross and found out that the devil feared Christ, he left him and enquired from people where to find Christ. He met a hermit who instructed him in the Christian faith. Christopher asked him how he could serve Christ. When the hermit suggested fasting and prayer, Christopher replied that he was unable to perform that service. The hermit then suggested that because of his size and strength Christopher could serve Christ by assisting people to cross a dangerous river, where they were perishing in the attempt. The hermit promised that this service would be pleasing to Christ. After Christopher had performed this service for some time, a little child asked him to take him across the river. During the crossing, the river became swollen and the child seemed as heavy as lead so much that Christopher could scarcely carry him and found himself in great difficulty. When he finally reached the other side, he said to the child: "You have put me in the greatest danger. I do not think the whole world could have been as heavy on my shoulders as you were." The child replied: "You had on your shoulders not only the whole world but Him who made it. I am Christ your king, whom you are serving by this work." The child then vanished. Like Saint Christopher, we often search for things that will make us more powerful in society and as a result we see people becoming slaves to materialistic wealth. Yet as Catholics know that there is more than just materialistic wealth; we know that Christ died for all of mankind so that we may have life when our earthly days are over. Having known Christ, St Christopher later went on to serve God and converted thousands of people to Christianity.

Celebrations are all around us,

especially at the end of the year

and at the beginning of each

year! Can you remember the most recent one (the one that has just

passed?) It was Chinese New Year! As is the traditional

saying– Kung Hai Fat Choi to everyone!!

I hope that you celebrated safely with your family on February 14th and in doing so, have learnt more about Chinese culture and traditions :D

DIRECTIONS

How did I get here?

There might be times when you feel lost because you haven’t been paying attention to what is happening in front of you. Unravel the signs to see what King Saul did (I’ll guarantee that it’s even worse than not paying attention!)

So how can we not? What ways are there to help us?

• By listening out with all our hearts to what God reminds us gently - what we should

choose, between right or wrong, what makes us happy and what won’t – only God knows

and so we should trust in Him.

How can we hear what God is saying?

• By praying more and more, once a month, once a week, then becoming once everyday,

we will be able to tune our ears to hear the faint whispers that Christ so lovingly

speaks to us.

Why do we need to ‘prepare’ for Lent? Why is Lent such an important part of our lives?

As Christians (people who believe in God), we can do something to show that we remember Jesus as he died on the cross for us – for us to be cleansed from sins.

~Having read what the message is, I would not want to get in the same fix as King Saul!~

What are some particular days that

we know mark the

beginning, middle

and end of Lent?

• Ash Wednes-day • 1st Sunday of Lent

• Palm Sunday • Good Friday • Easter Day
