UNDER THE SKIN AUTUMN 2014

description

As summer turns to autumn there is a decidedly russet and gold leaf feel to our second issue, and in addition to bringing you plenty of seasonal offerings we have also sought out some expert opinions on the perfect wines to accompany a rite of passage for the British, Sunday Lunch.

EDITORIALAhead of the Ryder Cup at Gleneagles it is a huge coup to land an interview with one of the world’s finest golfers, Luke Donald. Desperately unlucky to miss out this year, he holds the notable distinction of being the first European to be on the winning side in his first four Ryder Cups. Intriguingly for us he has also played a refreshingly hands-on role in the launch of his award-winning range of wines, the Luke Donald Collection. Whilst cynics might be quick to dismiss another celebrity endorsed wine venture, the golfer has played a hugely proactive part in the Napa Valley project that has its origins in a longstanding friendship with Bill Terlato, President and CEO of the family-owned Terlato Wines International. The former world number one gives a fantastic insight into how this friendship, formed on the greens of Northwestern University, culminated in his beautiful range of wines, as well as humouring us with tales of Medinah and life on Tour.

If you are looking for something a little further afield we have done our due diligence by picking out some Gold Medal winning wines for you to try this autumn. There are so many wine awards it sometimes feels as if the industry is undermining itself, but where possible we have endeavoured to dig beneath the marketing fluff to highlight some best-in-class wines from lesser-known producers.

As summer turns to autumn there is a decidedly russet and gold leaf feel to our second issue, and in addition to bringing you plenty of seasonal offerings we have also sought out some expert opinions on the perfect wines to accompany a rite of passage for the British, Sunday Lunch.

As ever, I owe a debt of gratitude to the engaging characters who gave up their time for the interviews in this issue. In addition to the aforementioned Luke Donald, John Williams MBE - the Executive Chef at the Ritz - describes what it’s like to work in one of London’s most iconic landmarks. Elsewhere, the charismatic and always entertaining Oz Clarke tells us what he has learnt during his lengthy career on television and beyond. Finally, I sincerely hope I have not insulted the artistic sensibilities of artists Conrad Engelhardt and Carne Griffiths, by clubbing them together on these pages. Both are uniquely gifted in their own right and use entirely different mediums to create beautifully original works of art, and they explain their inspirations and thought-processes behind the pieces that have lit up this issue.
