Cell Part Function
Mitochondria
Energy center or powerhouse of the cell. Turns food into usable energy. Site of cellular respiration.
RibosomesMakes proteins (Site where RNA is made into proteins)
Golgi Apparatus
Process and package molecules, such as proteins and lipids, after they are made and before they make their way to their destination
Lysosome
Contains digestive enzymes, breaks down organic molecules such as lipids, carbohydrates, etc
Endoplasmic Reticulum
Smooth ER - no ribosomesRough ER - ribosomes
Transport ‘intracellular highway.’ Ribosomes are positioned along the rough ER, proteins made by the ribosomes enter the ER for transport
NucleolusLocated inside the nucleus, makes ribosomes
Vacuole
Stores water or other substances, plant cells contain a large central vaculole
ChloroplastUses sunlight to create food by photosynthesis (only found in plant cells)
Cell Wall Provides additional support for the cell (only in plant and bacterial cells)
MicrotubulesPart of the cytoskeleton function in support. Also make up cilia and flagella (cell movement)
