Best Kept Secret: Beaver Dam Lodge

Perhaps not a big secret

anymore as they’ve been getting lots of publicity lately, but 8 miles north on I15 is a pretty neat place called the Beaver Dam Lodge.

Originally opened in 1931 and recently restored and modernized, the lodge features 18 resort rooms and a very nice large dining room with a complete bar. They serve breakfast starting at 8 am, lunch, and dinner from

4:30 to 9 pm. The dinner menu specializes in Italian but also has various steaks available. We’ve heard from residents who say the food is terrific and the prices quite reasonable.

It was a popular resort for movie stars – luminar-ies including Errol Flynn, Jack Benny, Tyrone Power and Wallace Berry had fun here away from Holly-wood.

For golfers, there is a nice par 3, 9-hole course shaded by large trees with carts available.

So if you’re looking for some relief from the Mes-quite casino life, visit the Beaver Dam Lodge. Take I15 north, exit at Beaver Dam – go left ½ mile and the Lodge is on the right.

And remember, Clark Gable slept there!

Summer Fun!

In the Spotlight: Bush & Jan HannaBush and

Jan moved to Sun City Mes-quite from Reno and are glad they no longer have

to shovel snow. They are originally from East Ten-nessee, but lived in Fishtail, Montana for 12 years where they also shoveled snow. Now they have great times vacationing, golfing and enjoying the good life.

Bush, the brother of Jack Hanna (the animal guy), loves to hunt, fish and create beautiful walk-ing sticks, lamps, tables and other household items out of trees, antlers and whatever else he finds. He has donated some of his creations for SCM fund-raisers, amazing everyone with his workmanship.

Jan is President of the Mahjong Club, Secretary of the Golf Club, and is active in line dancing and zumba. Her happy smiling face and great south-ern accent makes everyone smile. Bush & Jan have three children and six grandchildren, all living in the Las Vegas area.

Here’s something you may not know about the Hanna’s. They owned a real ghost town! Dean, lo-cated in Montana is 1 hour away from Billings. The town consisted of a restaurant and bar known as “Stillwater Saloon” and gift shop. The complex was called “Montana Hanna’s.” There was always an in-teresting story to be told and visitors enjoyed the western ambiance and weekly western dances. The “World Famous” Pig Races were only a short dis-tance away. Today the town is still operating, but without the Hanna flair.

On June 21 the “Magic of Summer” was held at the Pioneer Center. SCM residents were entertained by Jim Snodgrass and his horns

and keyboard, while magician Jason Bird strolled from table to table as-tounding everyone with his sleight of hand card tricks and other magic. There were oohs, aahs and how’d he do that!

A dinner of chicken alfredo and salad was served. The evening was topped off with a wonderful dessert – Lemoncello Cream Mousse Cake.

Thanks to the SCM staff for making the evening special. We appreciate all you do for us.

Recipe CornerChartered Club News: SCM’s RVers Club

The SCM RVers Club Charter was

approved by the HOA Board of Di-rectors on May 25. The club officers in-clude Co-Presidents George and Jill Dar-row, Co-Vice Presi-

dents Gary and Ann Williams and Co-Secretaries Ron and Jacque Turshinsky.

The club has 30 members. The first meeting was on March 8 at the Pioneer Center. The members elected officers and decided to have one official meeting per year. Other informal gatherings dur-ing the year are strictly social and not considered club meetings.

Club activities include trips to different areas with stays at RV Parks for several nights. Once there, the group enjoys sightseeing, golf, hiking,

shopping and other interests. Potluck dinners and socializing are popular events.

The first planned trip was in early May to Page, AZ with the SCM Golf Club Mixed/Back Nine Group. The next trip is planned for November 11-14 to Lake Mead. Club members Jeff and Barb Gunder-son are working on plans for a trip to Yuma, AZ in January.

Sounds like a lot of fun. You just need the desire for fellowship and adventure and you’re on your way! For additional information contact the Dar-rows at 345-7560 or [email protected].

New Committees! The ad-hoc Recycling Commit-tee will provide suggestions for implementing the SCM recycling program as well as other items the Committee feels will benefit the program. The standing Edu-cation Committee committee will explore resources to provide education programs for SCM residents. We are also still ac-cepting applications for the Cov-enants Committee. If you would like to serve on a committee, we are now accepting applications, which can be found at the Pio-neer Center, or on our website. www.suncitymesquite.org

While the Fourth of July is a fun and festive summer holiday to celebrate our great nation, it is perhaps the worst holiday of the year for our pets. Many pets can be terrified by things that go “boom,” whether it’s a large fireworks display or neighbors having fun with firecrackers, rockets, Ro-man candles or even simple sparklers. Here’s how you can protect your animal family members:

y Make sure they wear properly sized collars and ID tags and a micro-chip.

y Keep pets inside. If there will be a lot of people going in and out, con-sider putting pets in a bedroom with the door shut to keep them from getting out an open door.

y Close the windows, curtains and shades and turn on a fan, music or TV to muffle outside sounds.

y Never leave a frightened pet alone in a crate. He may feel trapped and injure himself trying to escape.

y If your pet is extremely distressed, you may need to stay with him and provide a calm presence, doing normal activities. Do not verbally reassure a nervous pet, however, since that may reinforce the nervous-ness.

Ellen Gilmore is a staff member for the Best Friends Animal Society. She is a certified pet dog trainer.

Pet Corner: Calm Their Fourth of July Nerves

“Hi, my name is Quade Cowdell. I was born in Salt Lake City, Utah. I lived in Grantsville, Utah for twenty-four years. In July of 2000 we decided to make Mesquite our home, after spending many family vacations here, because we liked the small town feel and the friendly people. Prior to moving to Mesquite, I worked in rock construction and maintenance for fifteen years. In Mesquite, I have worked in property management and maintenance, security, and also worked for the town hardware store. I now enjoy working in the facilities department at Sun City Mesquite. I enjoy spending time with my four daughters and son camping, bike riding, and horseback riding,”

Do you know this person?

Health & Wellness: Summer Sun Smarts It’s probably point-

less to advise that you avoid sunbathing, par-ticularly if you’re headed to a sunny island or off on a Mexico cruise. But

remember that the peak hours for sun exposure, between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., are the hardest on your skin. Using a good sunscreen is smart all year ‘round, but absolutely vital during the summer. Ultraviolet rays cause more than just sunburn – unprotected exposure leads to early aging, and puts you at risk for skin cancer.

For best results, apply sunscreen to all uncovered parts of your body 15 to 30 minutes before exposure. About an ounce will be enough for your entire body, using about a half teaspoon on your head and neck,

and on each arm, and then a heaping teaspoon on the front of your body, on your back, and on each of your legs.

Reapply sunscreen every two hours while you’re in the sun – more often if you’re swimming or sweating. If you do get sunburn, you’ll get relief from a cold compress or by soaking in a cool (not cold) bath or applying aloe.

And don’t forget that you don’t have to lay in the sun to get a tan. There are a lot of great self-tanners on the market now that give the appearance of a light tan without the orange effect of the old products. Just remember that these tanners don’t provide any protection from the sun – even if you look tan, you’re still pale underneath, and you’ll burn easily. So get a good sunscreen, and use it often. And, most of all enjoy your summer travel.

With summer here, more of you are taking the time to appreciate Mother Nature. Here are some tips to make your hikes enjoyable and safe: 3 Hike

with a friend or family member. If you hike alone, let someone know where you are going and when you plan on returning. 3 Take a cell phone. It might not work in a remote area, but it’s still good to have. 3 Carry a whistle. It is louder than a yell and lasts longer than your throat.3 Items you should carry with you:

small first aid kit, compass or GPS, and a flash light. It is also important to carry a laminated card with your name, address, telephone number, emergency contact and a list of medical issues (ex. allergies, medical conditions). 3 Hope these tips help you to enjoy the outdoors this summer. Happy Hiking!
