While you may not be able to leap from tall buildings or have X-ray vision, you do have the ability to change and save lives.

That’s right, it takes just one person, you for instance, to make a lasting and truly remarkable difference in someone’s life. This issue of Heartbeat illustrates just that.

Whether it is a high-tech robot funded entirely by generous donors (page 10), or 10-year-old Michael Fergus (page 17), every gift, every act of kindness, translates into something special for someone else.

This annual recognition issue is just one small way to show our gratitude and appreciation for your investment in HonorHealth.

Also in this issue we are honored to celebrate the remarkable life and legacy of Joe Lampe, who along with his wife Shawn, are great examples of how personal philanthropy can drive enormous change. It is through their commitment to HonorHealth and its heart patients and physicians that we have the new Lampe Center for Advanced Heart Care. Theirs is also a wonderful example of how giving truly does come from the heart.

Now the newly opened Joseph and Shawn Lampe Center for Advanced Heart Care provides patients with a one-stop location for comprehensive services—from screening and evaluation to diagnosis and access to groundbreaking treatments and technology.

“Creating the Joseph and Shawn Lampe Center for Advanced Heart Care is one more way of providing the best care for patients. It combines the convenience of a one-stop location with the expertise of a team of heart professionals and the quality that results from having standard protocols,” said Cardiothoracic Surgeon Robert Riley, M.D., Medical Director and Chief of Cardiovascular Surgery at HonorHealth Shea Medical Center

“The Structural Heart Program at the Lampe Heart Clinic ensures that HonorHealth remains at the forefront of today’s minimally invasive procedures. It also supports our leading research efforts, which give patients access to innovative technologies and techniques. Simply put, it strengthens our ability to provide treatments that can literally change patients’ lives,” said interventional cardiologist David Rizik, MD, HonorHealth chief scientific officer of Heart and Vascular Services.

“This is a tremendous addition to the HonorHealth Heart and Vascular program,” said Gary Baker, HonorHealth Shea Medical Center CEO. “Every element of the center was carefully and thoughtfully designed to meet the needs of our heart patients.”

The Lampe Heart Center is an essential element of an exciting new partnership with Cedars-Sinai — a collaboration that provides a single point of access for adult congenital heart disease patients. Two physicians from the Cedars-Sinai Congenital Heart Program will join the HonorHealth multi-disciplinary team in treating patients at the Lampe Heart Center on a regular basis.

“Congenital heart disease is one of the most common birth defects. Innovative treatments now mean that most children born with congenital heart disease live well into adulthood. As a result, cardiologists are caring for a growing number of adults with repaired heart defects, which can be complex,” said interventional cardiologist Maulik Shah, MD, chief medical officer, HonorHealth Heart and Vascular Institute.

When children with congenital heart disease become adults, they often are no longer seen by a pediatric cardiologist. However, nearly all need follow-up care throughout their lives and potentially additional surgery. The American College of Cardiology recommends coordination of ongoing care through regional centers of excellence with expertise in adult congenital heart disease.

A Tribute to Joe LampeIt is with great sadness that we report that Joe Lampe passed away on January 25, 2018. “Joe truly cared about helping others,” said John Ferree, president of HonorHealth Foundation. “This new heart center was his vision. He was deeply involved in every step of its creation from the initial planning to establishing the partnership with Cedars Sinai – another organization very close to his heart. We are grateful for his service and his commitment to the patients and to the heart community at HonorHealth. He will be missed. While we mourn the loss of this great man, we find comfort that this center will stand in honor of his enduring legacy of extraordinary giving and will offer hope and support to heart

patients and families for many years to come.”

Joe is survived by Shawn and his four children, Anthony, Scott, Mark and Stryker; and four grandchildren.

Joe and Shawn have been personally touched by heart disease and are committed to changing the statistics and making major strides in the fight against this seemingly unstoppable killer. For many years, Joe served on the board of the California Heart Center at Cedars-Sinai. The new partnership with HonorHealth is is a direct result of Joe’s service and his collaboration with Cedars-Sinai.

The Lampe Heart Center is another chapter in Joe and Shawn’s history of generous support for HonorHealth patient services and programs.

Last fall, the Joseph and Shawn Lampe Center for Advanced Heart Care was dedicated. During the ceremony, Joe and Shawn were recognized for their personal commitment and extraordinary generosity and presented with HonorHealth Foundation’s 2017 Doctors of Philanthropy award.

“We are very grateful that we had the wonderful opportunity to recognize Joe for his tremendous support,” said John Ferree, president of HonorHealth Foundation. “We are also grateful that he had the opportunity to experience the joy of seeing this beautiful new center open its welcoming doors.”

Honoring Joe and Shawn LampeHonorHealth Foundation proudly announces that Daniel D. Von Hoff, MD, chief scientific officer of the HonorHealth Research Institute, has been named the Virginia G. Piper Distinguished Chair in Innovative Cancer Research.

The honor represents the first-ever endowed chair at HonorHealth, made possible by a grant from the Virginia G. Piper Charitable Trust, a longtime supporter of HonorHealth.

“HonorHealth serves our community with exemplary expertise and innovation in healthcare and medical research which has the potential to inform and advance health outcomes. We are fortunate to have this caliber of scientific discovery and treatment in Maricopa County,” says Susan M. Pepin, MD,MPH, president and CEO of Virginia G. Piper Charitable Trust.

Desert Mission holds a rich place in Arizona’s history as one of the oldest continuously operating social services in the Phoenix area.

The non-profit organization was founded in 1927 by Elizabeth Beatty and nurse Marguerite Colley, affectionately known as the “Angels of the Desert,” to address the health and social needs of struggling families in North Phoenix.

2017 marked 90 years of continuing the legacy upon which the organization was founded, making health and social services accessible to the most vulnerable members of our community.

This community outreach is a key part of HonorHealth’s commitment to Making Healthy Personal. It also illustrates how HonorHealth goes beyond the boundaries of our five medical centers to improve the health and well-being of the people we serve. It means more than just offering expert medical care and compassion. Through Desert Mission, we are able to provide the vital resources to address social and economic factors that influence health.

Today, Desert Mission offers programs for housing resources, nutrition education, access to healthy food, financial education and employment support. These programs include:

• Desert Mission Food Bank – the most widely recognized program in the community. On average, the food bank serves 230 clients a day, and up to 500 clients during the holidays. Built to look and function like a small grocery store, the food bank meets the most basic human needs and provides food for the vulnerable in our community. The food bank also offers several free and reduced cost food programs, nutrition education along with resources and referral services.

Additionally, the food bank provides valuable programs such as an emergency food program which offers monthly packages for those in crisis, a Snack Pac program that provides school-age children who are at risk of going hungry over the weekend, supplemental food programs for seniors and so much more.

• Lincoln Learning Center – a community preschool and childcare center that offers a high-quality learning environment that meets a national standard for every student.One of the first to achieve the prestigious National Association for the Education of Young Children designation, the center has students who consistently lead state standards in scoring. The center helps children develop critical thinking, language and literacy skills as well as a strong sense of self-esteem, preparing them for kindergarten and life.

• Adult Day Healthcare – an enrichment program for older adults and those physically or cognitively challenged. Affordable personal care and supervision in a dignified, stimulating environment gives families a break from their caregiving responsibilities and helps adults maintain an active lifestyle by encouraging independence and health. n

Robots aren’t just for movies and television shows anymore. They’re for something far more important—saving lives.

HonorHealth now has a force of 22 germ-zapping robots made possible entirely by generous donors. Representing state-of- the-art disinfection technology, these mighty robots use high-intensity ultraviolet light to kill pathogens and safeguard patients’ from infections. They can impact their health and quality of life, lengthen their hospital stay, increase costs and potentially be deadly.

“You can imagine how hard it is to wipe down every nook and crevasse in a room. Think of the telephone, cords, bed rails and other things. The advantage of the robot is its highly intense light which penetrates the entire area,” says Stephanie Jackson, MD, HonorHealth senior vice president and chief quality officer.

The robots were first used in HonorHealth’s inpatient unit for patients with blood cancers at Scottsdale Shea Medical Center. Now, they’re also used in intensive care units throughout all five HonorHealth medical centers.

The robots were so successful that HonorHealth is expanding the program. There’s a critical need for more of these robots.

“Having the Xenex robots supports HonorHealth’s mission of improving the health and well-being of our patients,” says Chuck Palmer, HonorHealth Foundation trustee. “Every hospital in the U.S. faces economic repercussions for hospital-acquired infections. These robots safeguard our patients’ physical health, as well as HonorHealth’s ability to serve its community.”

Robots at workWhere there are people, surfaces and air, there are germs, even in hospitals. Chances are, HonorHealth patients won’t have the opportunity to actually “meet” Elimn8r, Genie G , Glady, or Hector the Disinfector. Nonetheless, these robots, named by their donors, are in action every day.

While they may resemble R2 D2 from Star Wars, these bacteria blasters can effectively clean and disinfect a patient room in just minutes. Once a patient is discharged and the room undergoes standard cleaning, a robot is placed in three different key areas. In each location, the robot’s “head” pops up and launches a four-minute disinfection cycle. Its exposes xenon flash lamps that emit high-intensity ultraviolet light. Delivered in millisecond pulses, the light is hundreds of times more intense than sunlight. Items such as nurse call buttons, TV remotes and telephones are turned over between cycles to disinfect all surfaces.

The pulsed ultraviolet light passes through the cell walls of bacteria, viruses and bacterial spores. This not only kills the pathogens, but also destroys their DNA so they cannot repair themselves or replicate. n

Robots to the rescue

The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Scottsdale Shea Medical Center has a new addition: the Scottsdale Auxiliary Neonatal Care Suite.However, more than 400 of these babies will need the specialized care offered by a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).

Fortunately for these newborns and their families, HonorHealth Scottsdale Shea Medical Center is home to a newly expanded 28-bed NICU, the only Level III NICU in the northeast Valley. Staffed by specialists including neonatologists, neonatal nurse practitioners, specially trained nurses and respiratory professionals who provide around-the-clock care, the HonorHealth NICU provides the lifesaving services needed for these tiniest patients.

Thanks to generous support from the HonorHealth Scottsdale Auxiliary, the NICU has expanded from 24 beds (arranged in five suites known as pods, with four beds in each pod) to 28 beds with the addition of a sixth pod. In addition, the family waiting room and parent’s nesting room were refreshed as well.

Members of the HonorHealth Scottsdale Auxiliary were on hand for a special dedication to celebrate the official opening of the new suite. n

“To have this Neonatal Care Suite where our most vulnerable patients will be cared for, brings a vital component to our NICU,” says Laura Grafman, HonorHealth Foundation executive vice president, “May these babies and their families always find hope comfort, compassion and loving care within these walls.”

The 1920s were back and in style at the Oct. 28 Night of Gold. Presented by HonorHealth Foundation,the annual gala proved to be a spectacular event filled with glitter and, of course, gold!Co-chairs Tina Bhakta and Linda French, along with their committee, offered an exciting evening with avery special purpose – to raise much needed funds for the programs and services of HonorHealth DesertMission. Brandon Lee, 3TV anchor, served as emcee.

Night of Gold was also a celebration of Desert Mission’s 90th anniversary. The 1920s theme was centered around the 90th anniversary and carried through in every aspect of the event from the room decor to the menu to the fun video featuring historical milestones in Desert Mission’s history.

Held in the Frank Lloyd Wright Ballroom at the Arizona Biltmore Resort, guests enthusiastically embraced the theme and arrived in flapper dresses and pinstriped suits. A stunning 1939 Bugatti was on display at the front entrance and the SpeakEasy cocktail lounge provided a variety of libations. While many danced to swing music from The Instant Classics, others created memories at the fun photo booth.

“We are so proud to be part of HonorHealth Desert Mission. The evening would not have been possible without our outstanding volunteer committee who generously gave their help and encouragement. Will Rooke was a devoted husband, father, faithful volunteer and quite simply, a man who cared for everyone. He was a dear friend to HonorHealth and to everyone at HonorHealth Thompson Peak Medical Center where he would greet visitors with a sparkle in his eye and a bright smile.

Originally from Pennsylvania, Will moved to Arizona 10 years ago. Here he found good friends and a great place to play golf in the Desert Mountain community.

Will served in the Navy and then started his career as an account executive with Merrill Lynch. He followed his father to the floor of the New York Stock Exchange where he was a member for 47 years. “My father was my mentor,” Will always said. “He taught me early on the importance of helping others. These are values that I incorporated into my entire life.”

His energy and enthusiasm were contagious. Not one to sit still, Will had many interests; he was a yachtsman, private pilot, fisherman, bird hunter, skier, photographer, golf and tennis player. If all that wasn’t enough, he was a great philanthropist.

Will spent the majority of his life helping others through his support and volunteer roles in hospitals. He and his family were longtime supporters of Morristown Hospital where he served as chairman of the hospital’s board.

After moving to Arizona, he gave his time and his generosity to HonorHealth. He served on the HonorHealth Foundation Board of Trustees and was a founding member of the Thompson PeakCommunity Leadership Advisory Council and on Thursday mornings, was a volunteer at the front desk at Scottsdale Thompson Peak Medical Center. In fact, Will was affectionately known as ‘Mr. Thompson Peak.’

In 2010, Will was recognized for his outstanding support by HonorHealth Foundation with theDoctor of Philanthropy award.

He was greatly admired and loved by all.Will left this world last summer; however, his legacy of giving will continue and will always be remembered. n

From physicians and nurses to laboratory technicians and countless others, team members at HonorHealth are dedicated and hard working—even our team members with four legs and tails!

Apollo Kalamanis, Chewbacca Palmer and Fargo Farley were joined with their “families” and other special guests for the HonorHealth K-9 security training demonstration. These members of the K-9 security team, along with their human partners, presented a behind-the- scenes look to more than 50 donors, all generous contributors to this important program.

The six teams that make up this unique service left the audience in awe as they demonstrated their intense training techniques.

The special night featured a moving tribute to Nancy J. Farley along with the announcement of the Nancy J. Farley K-9 Security Endowment.

Nancy was a dear friend and generous benefactor of HonorHealth and especially to the K-9 security program. She knew that specially trained dogs have a very important job at HonorHealth. These keen canine officers work to ensure the safety and security

of everyone—from patients and family members to visitors and staff. They also find time to bring a smile to a patient’s face, or ease the worry of a family member.

The Nancy J. Farley K-9 Security Program Endowment Fund will help ensure that this program, which launched in 1999 with two officers/handlers and two canines, is sustainable. The program has expanded over the years and continues to play a valuable role in protecting the safety and security of individuals throughout our medical centers.

“We thank you for your passion and commitment and for playing a crucial role in the successful operations of these teams,” says John Ferree, president of HonorHealth Foundation. “The HonorHealth K-9 program relies on philanthropy. Your gifts are morethan a means to enhance the program, your gifts are an integral part of its mission. We are proud to honor Nancy and her generous spirit with this lasting gift, which will help ensure a long-term future for this distinctive program.” n

Rosati’s Golf TournamentA fun group of golfers from Anthem joined together for the first annual Rosati’s Sports Grill Breast Cancer Awareness Golf Tournament. Proceeds from their event benefited the HonorHealth Breast Health and Research Center. The group enjoyed a fun day of golf at Antelope Hills Golf Courses in Prescott before returning to Rosati’s for an afternoon of fun. We appreciate their support!

Michael Fergus After a visit to the Pediatric Emergency Department at HonorHealth Scottsdale Shea Medical Center, 10 year-old Michael decided he wanted to give back to the place that helped him. He saved part of his allowance every week and came back to present his donation to some of the staff and nurses. He even got to meet the security K-9 Chewie.
