SPOTLIGHT: KAELA The English Language Program at Lakehead University has strong community connections within Thunder Bay, Ontario. Our program thrives with the involvement of volunteers. They share their passions with the students, support them as they explore our beautiful city, build friendships and memories that will last a lifetime.

The English Language Program is excited to spotlight Kaela! Kaela is studying at the Winnipeg Holistic, Expressive Arts Therapy Institute in Winnipeg and specializes in student diversity and culture!

"My name is Kaela and I love volunteering with people from different countries and cultures. Life is made interesting and rich by our differences, and made whole by our commonalities. There is always so much to enjoy in meeting, working, and playing with people from different cultures! From playing basketball to exploring Fort William Historical Park to making tie-dye shirts, the students are tons of fun to be with. I am so grateful for this opportunity."

STUDENT

TESTIMONIAL

My time in Thunder Bay at Lakehead University exceeded my expectations. I am very glad to have had the opportunity to be part of the English Lan-guage Program and the Computer Science Program of Lakehead University. In the first 4 months while I was studying English I met the best team dedicated to give the best experience they could give for me and other students. I could see that they are more than qualified in what they do, they are passionate. And that made me very happy because I could feel their passion and happiness in everything they did. When I finished the English Course nothing changed, the Lakehead International team was awesome, and they gave me all the support I needed. During my studies at the main campus I met incredible professors, and classmates that became my new friends. I can truly say that 2015 was the best year that I had.

~

I have enjoyed over fifteen

years teaching English as a second language in various

countries, primarily in the Middle East. My first teaching

experience was in Saudi Arabia followed by experiences

in Oman and Qatar. I have taught a range of learners

(elementary to advanced) within a variety of ESL, EFL,

ESP and EAP contexts. My overseas experience has

also provided an opportunity to function as a Multi-Media

and testing coordinator as well as participating in a num-

ber of curriculum development

initiatives.

My educational background is sociology and linguistics. I

hold an honours degree in Sociology and Social

Anthropology from Dalhousie University and Master of

Applied Linguistics from the University of Southern

Queensland. I also hold CELTA and TESOL

Certificates.

My hobbies include travelling, hiking, hockey and

working out when time permits. I also enjoy less

active leisure moments such as engaging in

intellectual conversations over a coffee, taking a

relaxing stroll in the park or watching an interesting

documentary. I am open to trying new adventures and

intend to explore the many activities that Thunder Bay

has to offer.

I feel lucky and privileged to be part of the ELP team at

Lakehead University and look forward getting to know

and working with all members in this department. I am

passionate about learning and helping others to

maximize their language potential in order to reach

their goals. I am enthused about working with the ELP

staff in supporting and preparing learners for their

future endeavors.
