Álvaro Santamaría completed his Civil Engineering degree and was in a successful job, starting his career with a construction com-pany, building roads. He had everything: family, friends, job and a gym membership. But one impassioned prayer changed his course forever. Here’s his SacredStory: Thank you, Álvaro, for sharing your story. Let’s start at the begin-ning. What was life like when you were growing up? Well first, let me start by saying that I love my last name - Santamaría - be-cause since I was born, Our Lady has been taking care of me, and I’ve al-ways felt her presence in my life. I was born and raised in El Salvador, blessed to be in a strong, supportive family. I have two sisters (I'm in the middle!). My parents were very in-volved in the parish and were part of the charismatic renewal. I remember them leading the group, giving talks to the community. We prayed the rosary every day together as a family, Mass every Sunday and sometimes during the week too. I was there and watching, formed by their example of faith. I think that foundation has been huge in my life. They're still an example for me. Were you involved in parish life too?

I entered a group called Missionary Childhood, a group for little kids. We would go to church and then visit other kids in the neighborhood. We were like a big line of kids going on the street, singing with our Bibles, and we were so happy! We would knock on doors, asking the parents if they had kids too, to come join us. We would pray and read the Bible. You know, just inviting them to come to church to show them it’s not bor-ing! I think that was one of the things that inspired me as a kid. I think the Lord was working with me even back then. You were steeped in faith from the very beginning. Did you think about the priesthood then? No, I never thought that priesthood was going to be for me. I went to Uni-versity, really focusing on my studies, especially math. I was a good student and graduated with a degree in Civil Engineering. I got a job working with a construction company, building roads. It was a really good experi-ence. That’s a big leap, from civil engi-neer in El Salvador to seminarian in the Bay Area! How’d that hap-pen? Well, I never thought that the priest-hood was going to be my way of life! But after University and when I start-ed my career, I had more time to pray. But it felt like I was split be-

tween work and prayer. You know, at that point I had everything I wanted. I had my family. I had a good job. I finished University, and I was exercis-ing and going to the gym! But won-dered what God wanted from me. So I was trying to figure it out, asking the Lord for guidance. I remember praying, “I want to grow, and I want more from you. I want to love you more, and I want to BE for you. I don't ask you for material things. I want you to just take me deeper into the ocean of your pres-ence, of your spirit. Just let me know that that you are there for me. I want to become a Prophet! I want to be-come your disciple! I want to be there for you!” I mean, I was praying, and it was not just like feeling. It was conviction. It was something that was in my heart, there burning. That I wanted to be on fire. I wanted to fall in love. Wow! That is a powerful prayer! Did God answer? Yeah. I remember I could hear His voice; I mean really deeply. I don't know how to explain this, but He said “Come Follow Me.” And it was bold. I said in prayer, “What are you talking about? I don't want to become a priest!” And then it was like He said it again, “Come Follow Me.” It was a message with such a quality of au-thority. Then I said, “Okay, this is too much

for today, we will continue this con-versation later. I'm going to sleep now!” [laughing] “I can't handle this tonight. We’ll talk again tomorrow!” You said that in prayer to the Lord? Ha! Yes, you know when you are a friend with someone you have the confidence to talk to that person like that. Personally. That’s how you know you’re in a relationship. Did the conversation continue? Yes, I kept hearing those words re-sounding my heart and in my mind. At first it was, “No, I don’t want to be priest.” Then later I was thinking, “Well, why NOT be a priest?” So, the Lord was changing me, slowly chang-ing and opening my heart. I talked about it with my mother, and she wanted to make sure I was making the right choice. I talked to my dad and he just said, “You were born for this. I have always known that one day you would realize it.” What was your next step? I did my discernment year in El Salva-dor and I joined the seminary. But my dad was already here in US, in Daly City, so I came to visit, and I was so impressed with the Diocese. And my dad said, “Why don't you come here and finish your studies?” I was a seminarian in El Salvador for three years already, but I had a meeting with Bishop Barber, and he said that he would support me. That was in April 2018. And I thought I was com-ing to just visit! Then you joined St Patrick’s Semi-nary?

Well, not right away. I needed to start learning English in 2018, so I spent a few semesters at Ohlone College Fremont. I believe it was the work of the Holy Spirit in my life because I picked up English quickly. Then they asked me to take the test for interna-tional students. It was so hard – took four hours to complete – and I was disappointed, because I didn’t think I passed. But it was a sign that God wanted me on this path, because He gave me everything that I needed. I passed! I applied to St Patrick’s and was accepted. I’m so really grateful and so happy. I have three more years until I am ordained a Deacon, then a year after that (God willing), ordained a priest. Your story is amazing! What would you say to someone who is dis-cerning what God wants from them? I would say do not be afraid. If you think God is not responding, that He not saying anything, that He’s quiet, maybe it’s because you don't let him talk! I think many of us, me too, sometimes our prayer is all talking and asking. But we need silence to

listen. Go to a holy hour, just be there in silence and try to hear what He’s saying. Then when you start to understand what His voice sounds like, I mean you can start to feel the blessings that come. That doesn't mean that on the way is it going to be easy. Challenges still happen. The devil will be to tempt you, plant that seed of doubt. Don’t listen to that. But when you fall, go to confession. Pray. Just come back, just try again and again and again. Keep asking for guidance, and keep in your heart that you want to do His will. Just realize that you are a child of God and He loves you and He’s going to guide you. He’s going to give you JOY. Álvaro Santamaría obtuvo su título de Ingeniero Civil y tenía un buen trabajo, comenzó su carrera en una empresa constructora, trabajando en carreteras. Lo tenía todo: familia, amigos, traba-jo y membresía en un gimnasio. Pero una oración apasionada cambió su curso para siempre. Aquí está su SacredStory: Álvaro, gracias por compartir su historia. Empecemos desde el principio. ¿Cómo fue su niñez? Bueno, primero déjeme empezar diciendo que me encanta mi apellido, Santamaría, porque la Vir-gen me ha cuidado desde que nací, y siempre he sentido su presencia en mi vida. Nací y crecí en El Salvador, bendecido por ser parte de una fa-milia fuerte y solidaria. Tengo dos hermanas (¡yo soy el del medio!). En nuestra familia rezábamos el rosario juntos diariamente, íbamos a Misa todos los domingos y a veces, también durante la semana. Mis pa-dres siempre estuvieron muy involu-crados en la parroquia y fueron parte de la renovación carismática. Los recuerdo como líderes de grupo y dando charlas a la comunidad y yo siempre estaba allí, observando; así fue como me formaron, con su ejem-plo de fe. Creo que esa base ha sido inmensa en mi vida y aún ahora siguen siendo un ejemplo para mí. ¿Y también estuvo usted involu-

crado en la vida parroquial? Entré en un grupo para niños pequeños llamado “Infancia Mision-era”. Íbamos juntos a la iglesia y luego visitábamos a otros niños del vecindario. Salíamos en una gran fila de niños a la calle, cantando con nuestras Biblias, ¡éramos muy feli-ces! Tocábamos puertas y les preguntábamos a los padres si ellos también tenían hijos para que se unieran a nuestro grupo; también orábamos y leíamos la Biblia. Lo que buscábamos era invitarlos a venir a la iglesia para demostrarles que no era aburrido; este grupo fue una de las cosas que me inspiró en mi niñez. Y creo que el Señor ha estado traba-jando conmigo desde entonces. Ud. estuvo lleno de fe desde su niñez, ¿pensó desde entonces en el sacerdocio? No, nunca pensé que el sacerdocio fuera para mí. Después del bachille-rato fui a la Universidad, cen-trándome realmente en mis estudi-os, especialmente en matemáticas. Era un buen estudiante y me licencié en Ingeniería Civil; luego conseguí un empleo en una empresa de con-strucción, trabajando en carreteras. Fue una experiencia realmente buena. Pasar de ingeniero civil en El Sal-vador a seminarista en el Área de la Bahía es un gran salto en la vida. ¿Cómo sucedió eso?

Bueno, yo nunca pensé que el sacer-docio fuera para mí. Pero, al termi-nar la Universidad y empezar con mi carrera me quedó más tiem-po para orar, pero siempre me sentí dividido entre el trabajo y la oración. En ese momento yo tenía todo lo que quería: mi familia, un buen tra-bajo, mi título universitario y hasta estaba haciendo ejercicio y yendo a un gimnasio. Sin embargo, yo me preguntaba qué era lo que Dios quería de mí y estaba tratando de resolver esta incógnita, pidiéndole al Señor que me guiara. Recuerdo haber orado así: “Quiero crecer y quiero más de ti, quiero am-arte más y quiero SER para ti. No te pido cosas materiales sólo quiero que me sumerjas más profundamen-te en el océano de tu presencia, de tu espíritu. Déjame saber que estás ahí para mí. ¡Quiero convertirme en Profeta! ¡Quiero convertirme en tu discípulo! ¡Quiero estar ahí para ti! " Quiero decirle que así oraba en ese entonces, con mucha convicción, no era solo un sentimiento. Era algo que ardía en mi corazón, quería estar encendido y enamorado. ¡Guau! ¡Esa es una oración podero-sa! ¿Te respondió Dios? Si. Recuerdo que pude escuchar su voz muy profundamente. No sé cómo explicarlo, pero Él me dijo muy intensamente "Ven, sígueme". Y en oración yo le respondí: “¿De qué estás hablando? ¡Yo no quiero ser sacerdote! " Y luego, lo repite nue-

vamente "Ven, sígueme". Fue un mensaje con mucha autoridad. Luego respondí: “Está bien, esto es demasiado por hoy, después contin-uaremos esta conversación; por el momento me iré a dormir [….riendo] “Esta noche no puedo manejar este tema, mañana hablaremos de nue-vo." ¿Eso fue lo que le pediste al Señor en oración? ¡Por supuesto que sí! Cuando eres amigo de alguien tú sabes que tienes la confianza para hablarle así, de una forma personal. Así es cómo se sabe que tienes una relación con alguien. ¿Y continuó la conversación? Sí, seguí escuchando esas palabras resonando en mi corazón y en mi mente. Mi primera reacción fue: "No, no quiero ser sacerdote". Más ade-lante empecé a pensar: "Bueno, ¿por qué NO ser sacerdote?" Ya el Señor me estaba cambiando, cam-biándome poco a poco y abriendo mi corazón. Entonces se lo comenté a mi madre quién quería asegurarse de que estaba tomando la decisión correcta. Luego hablé con mi papá quien me dijo: “Naciste para eso, siempre supe que algún día te darías cuenta”. ¿Cuál fue tu siguiente paso? Hice mi año de discernimiento en El Salvador y me uní al seminario. Para ese entonces mi papá ya estaba aquí en Estados Unidos, en Daly City, así que vine de visita y me quedé muy impresionado con la Diócesis. Y mi papá me dijo: "¿Por qué no te vienes y terminas tus estudios aquí?" Yo ya

llevaba tres años en el Semi-nario El Salva-dor, pero cuan-do me reuní con el Obispo Bar-ber él me of-reció apoyo pa-ra quedarme. Eso fue en abril de 2018 y aquí estoy, ¡Y pensar que solo venía de visita! ¿Entonces, te uniste al Seminario de San Patricio? Bueno, no inmediatamente. En el 2018 necesitaba comenzar con aprender inglés, así que pasé al-gunos semestres en Ohlone College en Fremont. Por obra del Espíritu Santo en mi vida aprendí el idioma rápidamente. Luego me pidieron que hiciera el examen para estu-diantes internacionales. Este exa-men fue muy difícil, tardó cuatro horas y salí decepcionado porque no creía haberlo aprobado. ¡Pero lo pasé! Eso fue una señal para mí de que éste era el camino que Dios me señalaba porque me dio todo lo que necesitaba. Luego solicité ingreso en San Patricio y me aceptaron. Dentro de tres años me ordenarán como Diácono, y dentro de un año más (si Dios quiere) como sacerdote. Estoy muy agradecido y muy feliz. ¡Tu historia es asombrosa! ¿Qué le dirías a alguien que está dis-cerniendo la voluntad de Dios en sus vidas? Yo diría que no tenga miedo. Si cree que Dios no responde, que no dice nada, que está callado, quizás sea porque no lo deja hablar. Creo que

muchos de nosotros, incluyéndome a mí, oramos pidiendo y hablando, pero lo que necesitamos es silencio para escuchar. Vaya a una hora san-ta, quédese allí en silencio y trate de escuchar lo que Él le esté diciendo. Luego, cuando comience a compren-der cómo suena su voz, empezará a sentir las bendiciones que que le envía. Eso no significa que en el camino vaya a ser fácil, siempre habrá retos y desafíos. El diablo es-tará allí para tentarle y plantar esa semilla de duda; no lo escuche. Y cuando caiga, busque la confesión y rece; vuelva e intente una y otra y otra vez, sigua pidién-dole orientación y siempre tenga en su corazón el deseo hacer su volun-tad. Recuerde que es hijo de Dios y que Él le ama y le va a guiar en su camino. Él le dará ALEGRÍA. Muchas gracias, Álvaro. ¡Su alegría le ilumina todo el rostro!
