Welcome to Week 5 of Term 1! Coleambally Central School has formal common assessment tasks for secondary students, and these schedules are published in the school’s official Assessment Booklets. The school is committed to enhancing and encourag-ing students’ learning outcomes and these booklets are designed to ensure consistency throughout the school, to ensure no student is disadvantaged and encourage students to meet their assessment deadlines. Students are still expected to complete all tasks so that outcomes can be attempted, assessed and reported on. In all cases of absence or late submission, students need to bring a note from their parent/carers outlining the reason for the absence/lateness. This will be taken into consideration by the teacher in consultation with the Head Teacher to avoid loss of marks. Students need-ing to apply for an extension for an assessment task need to bring a note from their parent/carers at least one week prior to the due date, outlining a valid reason, if they know in advance they will not be able to meet a dead-line. This will also be taken into consideration by the teacher in consultation with the Head Teacher. If a scheduled assessment task clashes with an extra or co-curricular activity, for example representing the school in a sporting event, it is the students’ responsibility to make alternate arrangements at least a week prior to the due date. Students who do not meet assessment deadlines will be penalised in accordance with the school’s Assessment Policy. I would encourage all parents and carers to have a copy of their child’s Assessment Booklet to support their child’s assessment requirements and timelines. Please contact the front office if you would like a copy. School Office Hours At the end of last week we had our school telephone system upgraded to include an automated ‘out of office’ answering service. We have also implemented extended School Office opening hours and the office will now be open from 8.15 am to 4.15 pm each school day. Anyone ringing the school outside of these hours will receive an automated response indicating that the office is closed and to call back when the office has reopened. Novel coronavirus I have had some questions from members of the community regarding the Novel coronavirus. Attendance Attendance at school is more important than you may think! Please read the chart below. Missing school one day a fortnight is the equivalent of missing 1 and a half years of school. Please contact the school by phone, or send a note or email if your child is absent from school. You can also explain absences via the Skoolbag App. Attendance letters are sent home when a student displays a pattern of non-attendance and in extreme cases the student can be referred to a Home School Liaison Officer (HSLO).

Finally…. I will be absent from school from tomorrow attending a Narrandera Network meeting and a meeting of the NSWPPA Rural Education Committee in Sydney. Please contact the School Office in my absence. Our door is and always has been open – whether you are happy, sad or mad. We need to know if we are not doing something right, but I also need to know that you trust our motives and intentions. Everything we do, every single day is for YOUR children. Also, give your child the most valuable gift in the world – a good education - so send them EVERY day. We have a great school and it is such good value for very little money. Until next week,

handed out to students.

The Australian Defence Force Visits Tirkandi Inaburra

On Tuesday, the 18th of February, David from the Army and Brent from the Air Force spoke to

us about career opportunities in the defence forces. It made me think about becoming a spray

painter in the Air Force. Their motto: ‘Modern Warriors, Traditional Values and Defending Our

Land’ was cool. Jamaine

I was already interested in joining the army but listening to David made me think about

defence, weapons training and blowing things up. That’s what I want to do! Kayleb

I liked learning about the Aboriginal legends who served in World War I and II, especially War-

rant Officer Leonard Waters. He was a Kamilaroi man who left school at 14 to support his family

as a ring-barker and shearer. He trained as an aircraft mechanic and became a fighter pilot. I’m

so proud of him! Xavier

Uncle Leonard called his plane ‘Black Magic’. He flew over 90 missions over New Guinea and on

one flight his aircraft was struck by a Japanese 37mm cannon shell which wedged itself in the

cockpit without detonating. Amazingly, he flew another two hours before landing safely with

the shell still intact!! Cody

The talk made me think about my cousin Brett who served in the army in East Timor and the

Middle East. It made me consider a career in the forces too. I’d love to be a Navy Seal and go on

secret agent missions with the boys. Colby

I’m not interested in joining any of the forces because I don’t want to get blown up! Buddy

Brent talked about different career paths. Just about any job available in civilian life is also pos-

sible in the forces. He was a dog handler and his German shepherd was trained as a weapon- to

sniff out and attack the enemy. Some of the other jobs you can do in the Navy, Army and Air

Force are: mechanic, engineer, weapons trainer, electrician, first aid officer and more. You even

get free dental and medical care! Tristan

I was so proud to see Lance Corporal Richard Kirby’s photo come up in the PowerPoint presen-

tation. I’m related to him on my Dad’s side and my aunty has three of his medals. He was a

Wiradjuri man from Dubbo and he served in France, Belgium and Gallipoli. He was awarded the

Distinguished Conduct Medal for his ‘Conspicuous Gallantry and Devotion to Duty’ during an

attack on Raincourt, on 11 Aug 18. Unfortunately, he died from his wounds but his two older

brothers made it home. I’d like to follow the family tradition and serve in the Air Force. Beau

NATIONAL RUGBY LEAGUE

INSPIRE RESPECT NRL visited Coleambally Central School Primary on Monday 24 February with their INSPIRE RESPECT Program. The NRL shared tools & tips students can utilise every day to display respectful behaviours not just on the sporting field but in the classroom and everyday life.

Year 8 Science

Year 8 Science have been

investigating energy

transformations. We used the

sun's energy and magnifying

glasses to burn gum leaves and

bark. We have also started to

construct bow-drills, an ancient

tool used in fire lighting. A bow

is used to rotate a spindle,

creating friction and heat.
