Wida Schmidt

Dear Readers,I am delighted once again to announce the August 2013 e-magazine edition. In the August issue and in our Industry report section we have published the report written by Dialogic about Media Servers:Moving WebRTC from Lab to Marketplace. We have also highlighted some industry recent brief news and reports. Carrier Community is honoured to organise for the 3rd year in a row the ENPM annual meetings. We have included some information about tis upcoming event and the list of carriers attending. The final page of this issue highlights the name of the carriers that have recently joined our club and club 2014 annual events.

Industry ReportIn our August issue we have published the report from Dialogic about Media Servers:Moving WebRTC from Lab to Marketplace. Of all the excitement swirling around WebRTC, most still focuses on browser-to- browser real-time communication. And deservedly so, as enabling that capability is no small feat, and is therefore worthy of the market attention it’s getting. However, WebRTC could - and should - be about far more than simple peer-to peercommunication. But as the complexity of WebRTC use cases increases, so too will the barriers between what is possible and what is real. Read more on the next page.

Industry brief newsOnce again, we have picked up a few telecom related industry brief news from Verizon, PCCW Global, Hurricane Electric and other operators to keep our members informed about the latest news happening in our industry. Read more on the next page.

ENPM 2013 in ParisOur club is organising for the 3rd time in a row successfully the exclusive Annual European Network Planning Meeting (ENPM). This year the event is taken place in Paris from 10-12th September hosted by Orange and sponsored by Oracle/ Acme Packet, Dialogic and Network Mining. We are once again proud to be the organiser of this exclusive club’s event. At the ENPM 2013 in Paris we expect CTOs, Network Planners and Capacity Management as well as Operation executives to attend. Fantastic after event evening reception dinner parties are organised for all delegate guests.

Members joined New members are joining our club every month. This month once again we have included the company names recently joined. As of today we have qualified more than 2600 carrier executives representing 1300+ carriers in 120+ countries worldwide.

Coming soonIn September 2013 Carrier Community will launch its new GCCM event website with efficient structure, additional event related details, meeting planner and easy to navigate mechanism. Carrier Community is also planning to introduce new GCCM events in 2014 enabling the club to extend its reach to CIS, Middle-East as well as Euro-Asia regions. More details will be published soon. Registrations and sponsorship for the 2014 GCCM events are open now to book.

Our members’ feedback and comments are very important for us so please write to us so that we can further improve the services and grow this exclusive and global club.

Once again BIG THANK YOU for all your support and trust.

Media Servers: Moving WebRTC from Lab to Marketplace Of all the excitement swirling around WebRTC, most still focuses on browser-to-browser real-time communication. And deservedly so, as enabling that capability is no small feat, and is therefore worthy of the market attention it’s getting. However, WebRTC could - and should - be about far more than simple peer-to-peer communication. But as the complexity of WebRTC use cases increases, so too will the barriers between what is possible and what is real.

When WebRTC comes of age, service providers should be able to use it for large-scale multimedia conferencing, centralized call recording and voicemail storage, integration between text-to-speech and automatic speech response services, and outbound dialing (such as answering machines, fax machines and positive voice detection). To capitalize on this opportunity, carriers will need the means to forge interactions with non-WebRTC-capable endpoints – that is, they’ll need a facilitator for connecting to the PSTN and to other wired and wireless IP and mobile endpoints. And those facilitators will have to be able to manage signaling conversion and media transcoding.

This is where WebRTC-enabled media servers will become key. Just as Voice over IP (VoIP) hit the mainstream market only after services became VoIP-enabled, the same figures to be true for WebRTC in that media servers will enable carriers to embed WebRTC into their value-added services and applications. Early WebRTC use cases have people excited at the prospect of instantly calling for peer-to-peer conversations without needing to download a plugin, or to sign up for a username and password, or to jump through other hoops. However, building upon these easy one-click calls for video conferencing while simulcasting a sports event, for example, will need a media server for the multi-party applications to come to fruition.

WebRTC is still new for developers and users; and before mass adoption occurs, there are many incompatibilities between WebRTC-enabled and non-WebRTC browsers and devices that must be sorted out. It’s easy to see that without a media server as part of the equation, a true WebRTC revolution might not ever come to be.

An eager market for WebRTC applicationsAs carriers weigh what they must do to enable interoperability, application developers are already moving forward. In a WebRTC development environment, programmers with working knowledge of Java can create calling capabilities. Developers no longer need to master VoIP, or even have experience creating communications applications, since the WebRTC API handles the signaling and media requirements. This is good news for end users, who can expect to soon see browser-to-browser communications that make devices less important, as content and communications become available via any Internet-enabled item.

Service providers know that their futures rely heavily on where WebRTC goes next. In a recent survey conducted among 169 executives and developers, almost 90 percent said the new protocol is a major factor in their product roadmap strategies. With WebRTC-enabled products on the imminent horizon, and Google projections of more than 1 billion browsers ready to support WebRTC by the end of 2013, market watchers could jump to the conclusion that the next era for communications is already a done deal. And they’d be right – almost.

Rich communication sessions are overtaking voice phone calls, and multimedia-sharing experiences are gaining traction in private and next-generation networks, IMS, and IPX and LTE networks. WebRTC can speed the convergence of audio, video and collaboration, but only if carriers deploy media servers in their networks that are capable of enabling these applications. Without that crucial facilitator in place, WebRTC is a revolution that might be very slow in coming, if it even arrives.

Japan's DoCoMo has dropped hints that it is close to securing a deal to sell Ap-ple's iPhone, as the last major network in the country not to do so.

Chief Financial Officer Kazuto Tsubouchi said there are compelling reasons for Apple and his company to reach an agreement, accord-ing to an interview published in SankeiBiz. and cited by Bloomberg News.

A deal still hasn't been struck between the two com-panies though, and they are still said to be haggling over the details.

rivals gained customers keen to have Apple's smartphone, but now that Android is in the ascendant, there is de-creasing need for DoCoMo to bow to Apple's famously tough terms for selling its handsets.

The news could be bad for Sony though, as it was offered more handset sales by DoCoMo which wanted to shore up its smartphone range.

"To win against the iPhone, we have to offer a model which is generally easy to use," Tsub-ouchi said earlier this month. "Sony's brand and Xperia's im-age are just as good as the iP-hone."

Worldwide WLAN Market Continues Robust Growth in Second Quarter of 2013

The combined consumer and enterprise worldwide wireless local area network (WLAN) market segments increased 10.8% year over year in the sec-ond quarter of 2013 (2Q13).

According to the preliminary results published by IDC, the enterprise segment continued to grow at a very healthy rate and increased 14.8% over the same period last year. While the pace of the enterprise WLAN market growth is starting to slow from the 20%-plus year-over-year in-creases witnessed in the last sev-eral years, the enterprise WLAN market continues to be one of the fastest growing networking markets out there.

The consumer WLAN mar-ket also performed well in 2Q13 and increased 6.5% year over year, which was on par with the consumer WLAN results in 1Q13.

"Across all verticals and geog-raphies, enterprise IT continues to see an explosion of mobility applications running on more devices than ever, resulting in new investments in WLAN in-frastructure," said Rohit Mehra, Vice President, Network Infra-structure. "While growth slowed slightly this quarter compared to previous quarters, the grow-ing mobility needs of education, retail, healthcare, and other dis-tributed enterprise segments will continue to fuel substantial growth in the overall enterprise WLAN market."

From a geographic perspec-tive, the enterprise WLAN mar-ket performed especially well in Latin America with its 38.8% year-over-year growth and in Asia/Pacific where it increased 24.0% year over year in 2Q13. North America followed with a 14.9% year over year increase. Europe, Middle East & Africa (EMEA) grew 6.4% year over year in 2Q13, weaker than the

other major regions but still posi-tive and an improvement as mac-roeconomic conditions continue to gradually improve.

"Although regional and coun-try-level WLAN growth trends varied widely in 2Q13, the world-wide outlook for the enterprise, service provider, and consumer segments remains optimistic due to highly anticipated network up-grade cycles," said Petr Jirovsky, Senior Research Analyst, World-wide Networking Trackers Group.

Key Enterprise WLAN Vendor Updates

Cisco's 2Q13 worldwide enter-prise WLAN revenue grew 16.7% year over year, slightly above the overall market. Cisco's 2Q13 en-terprise WLAN revenue reached a record $581 million in the quar-ter. The North American market was especially strong for Cisco this quarter and now accounts for 58.4% of worldwide revenue, up from 48.8% in 1Q13. Cisco's worldwide market share stands at 53.7% in 2Q13, its highest share since 4Q10.

Aruba (excluding its OEM business) grew its enterprise rev-enue 13.6% year over year in the second quarter, which was, in essence, on par with the overall market and an improvement over the 8.5% year-over-year increase Aruba experienced in 1Q13. Aru-ba now holds 11% of the enter-prise WLAN market.

HP's overall enterprise WLAN revenue increased 17.7% year over year in 2Q13 and reached $65.7 million in 2Q13. This was a noticeable improvement in annu-al growth when compared to HP's results for the last few quarters. As a result, HP's market share in-creased to 6.0% of the market in 2Q13, up from 5.4% in 1Q13.

Ruckus grew a solid 37.3% year over year in 2Q13 and now accounts for 5.5% of the overall market.

Vodafone confirms talks on sale of Verizon Wireless stakeAugust 29 2013

Vodafone has confirmed that it is discussing the potential sale of its 45 per cent stake in US opera-tor Verizon Wireless to JV partner Verizon Communications. Veri-zon’s desire to assume full control of the largest mobile operator in the US is well known and the deal has been the subject of specula-tion for the better part of a dec-ade.

In a terse statement issued Thursday, Vodafone said: “Voda-fone notes the recent press spec-ulation and confirms that it is in

discussions with Verizon Com-munications Inc. regarding the possible disposal of Vodafone’s US group whose principal as-set is its 45% interest in Ve-rizon Wireless. There is no cer-tainty that an agreement will be reached.”

The two firms are understood to have explored a number of options over recent years. Veri-zon Wireless had 117.4 million customers at the end of June 2013, according to Informa’s WCIS Plus.

South Korea Relaxes Some Limits on Foreign Investment in Telecoms Market

The South Korean government has agreed to lift the limits on for-eign investment in its telecoms industry, but has excluded the coun-try’s three main mobile networks from the policy.

The government said that as part of a free trade agreement with both the USA and the European Union, it would lift the limit on foreign investment from 49% to 100%, but only on small telecom operators.

The foreign investors would also have to set up a locally owned holding company to handle the investment -- which could be a way of preventing local companies changing management through the sale of offshore stakes.

As the new regulations don’t apply to the big three operators, they are expected to affect just a few small companies, according to an of-ficial at the Ministry of Science, ICT & Future Planning.

Carrier Call was founded in 2003 in Switzerland with the goal to revolutionize the way, telecommunication carriers work in the international and national interconnect wholesale business. The company's award winning XCarrier® platform enables operators to manage their inter-carrier trading relationships more effectively. Every carrier knows that the systems which underpin the trading and exchange of international voice traffic are exceedingly complex. But few appreciate the deep linkages that exist between all these business processes and systems. Because these systems are so closely intertwined, a single error in one application can have serious implications further on down the line. Carrier Call understands these linkages - the company is staffed with highly experienced telecoms software executives - and has developed from scratch a solution that can manage all voice traffic processes in one package. For further information or to schedule a live demo of the product, please contact Ms. Claudia Toth on +41 564434106 or fax +41 564434101 or send an e-mail to [email protected]
