The power of little acts of goodness

On Friday of last week the College celebrated the feast day of our founder, Blessed Edmund Rice. Commencing with a poignant and uplifting Mass at the Basilica and concluding with a variety of fun activities on the College grounds, I am sure that the day provided a number of significant and lasting memories for all of the students and staff involved.

One of the themes of the day which I sincerely hope impacted strongly with each of our young men was the value of living a life of service and the power that such a commitment can have. This was made clear during a beautiful homily provided by Br Terry Casey during our Mass which I know was well

received by all of those in attendance. The Executive Director of Edmund Rice Education Australia, Dr Wayne Tinsey, also captured the importance of this notion in a letter he sent to all schools during last week when he wrote:

The quality of success we experience in life ultimately depends upon the tiny choices we make every minute of every hour of every day. A meaningful life is made up of a series of daily acts of decency and kindness, which, ironically, add up to something truly great over the course of a lifetime…Edmund Rice schools remind students that the road to true and lasting happiness lies through living a life of service for others. For some, this service might be on

the ‘big stage’… but for most of us, our contribution and service will be most needed and recognised in our families, friendship groups and local communities.

What a wonderful affirmation of the lives of all people of goodwill. As we often express at CBC Fremantle, our true purpose in life will only be revealed through what we do for others. The lasting happiness and fulfilment of a life spent in the service of others is as apparent as the transience of a self-absorbed existence.

There is tremendous power in little acts of goodness and kindness. I am privileged to witness that power every day in the way that parents interact with their sons, the way that parents

choose to interact with the staff, the way that staff interact with the students and most importantly, the way that our young men interact with each other.

Student achievements

Lachlan Glover (Year 10) performed as a finalist in the

James Morrison Jazz Scholarship at Generations in Jazz

in Mt Gambier last weekend. Lachie was one of only six

finalists selected for the live adjudication and was the

youngest person to perform at this prestigious event.

Debating success

CBC entered into their second round of debates at All Saints College with

outstanding success. Adjudicators across all three debates highlighted the

exceptional quality of the students and their arguments.

The Year 7 Novice team of Griffin Williams, Joseph Vykopal and Hugo Pollard scored their first win. Special mention to Griffin who stepped into

the role of first speaker with only three hours’ notice and started off what

was a very compelling debate.

The first Junior team to debate also scored a win. Daniel Page once

again opened with strong arguments that unsettled the opposition.

Special mention to James Morris who debated for his first time ever.

Lachlan Legge as always concluded the debate with some unnerving

stares, strong arguments and compelling rebuttal.

The second Junior team consisting of Ben Fitzpatrick, Ashton Muir,

Joshua Jackson and Lawson Micale were also granted a win as their

opponents forfeited. This provided the students with another fantastic

opportunity to debate against the adjudicators. Lawson jumped ship

and assisted the adjudicators in accepting defeat. Lawson was

outstanding after only having had a few minutes to create his speech on

the spot! Ben also shone in the role of first speaker and was able to easily

refer to and read from his palm cards in this round.

time. The vehicle entry and small carpark near the Chapel are for staff parking

and authorised visitors only. Ellen Street and Stirling Street provide plenty of

spaces for safe and practical short-term parking for dropping off students.

Thomas Rivers (Year 8) represented Western

Australia at the Australian Little Athletics

Championships that were held in Adelaide

on Sunday 24 April. Tom competed in discuss,

shot put, long jump and 4x100 relay.

Boys at CBC enjoyed a special morning with their mums to celebrate Mother’s Day with a

Liturgy at the College followed by a delicious morning tea in the Cloisters.

All Year 7, 8 and 9 students have chosen to play either football, soccer, hockey, rugby union or ultimate frisbee and have been placed in teams for the upcoming Associated Catholic Colleges Lightning Carnivals.

The day involves playing against students from other Catholic schools from around Western Australia. The focus is on participation and good sportsmanship.

Students in Year 11 Religion & Life General studies, have spent the first few weeks of term preparing and studying for their

Common Assessment Task. All classes have now moved on to exploring social issues. Students have spent the first few lessons

furiously brainstorming and discussing issues they believe are prevalent in our society. The focus for this unit of work will be on

refugees and asylum seekers. The eagerness to understand and learn is evident across all classes.
