From the PrincipalThis week we hosted two key events on our school calendar. The first was our Pacific Graduation evening, the second our New Student and Parent Orientation afternoon. Both are significant as they remind us that we are building towards our end of year celebrations while planning for new beginnings in 2020.

As Christmas approaches and the pressures on our time increase. It is important that school remains a place of learning. All students are expected to be present and engaged in the classroom.

Our seniors need to be productively studying for NCEA and Scholarship exams at home. There is time for the beach, work, and social occasions in December.

Good luck to our Year 10 students as they depart for camp. We hope that you challenge yourselves to participate in activities outside of your comfort zone.

Thank you to Mrs Tagamoa, her support team, and our pacific families for an amazing Pacific graduation ceremony. A true celebration of culture, values, and what it means to be a successful, future-focused pacific women.

Thank you to Ms Hill and Mrs Barwig-Uini, for organising our new student and parent orientation afternoon. It was fantastic to see so many new and excited faces in the school.

Parihaka DayFriday 5th November was Parihaka Day. An important day in our New Zealand history. A day to remember the brave men, women and children who under the leadership of Tohu Kākahi and Te Whiti o Rongomai were a part of New Zealand’s first peace movements. I think we have great lessons to learn from the sacrifices they made to fight injustice with peaceful resistance.

We included a prayer for peace and for the people of Parihaka during Whanau time or in class as a way to show that we stand together, in solidarity, as one nation, one people.

Craft Group UpdateCraft Group has completed its last project for the year, Babies Beanies. These will be presented to The Salvation Army to give to those who are in need of such an item.

Craft Group is an excellent way to do creative service in our immediate community. It is all about working for a cause, not applause, by using head, heart and hands.

On Monday 4th November 73 girls came from Kyoto, Heian-St Agnes JHS. They were on graduation trip either to visit a farm or were to study pre-school education, as well as experiencing a day at Marist College.

The day began with a liturgical assembly, including a welcome by Mrs Taulu and our Japanese students, who spoke to them in their own language. This was followed by an orientation programme. The group was divided into our four houses and three Year 9 classes became buddies for the day. Everyone walked around the school answering questions such as the colour of the chapel, and also did speed dating with their buddies in house groups.

For the remainder of the day each group experienced Te Reo, PE, folk dance and a cultural exchange.

The day finished with everyone gathered together in the gym where Marist girls sang Mo Maria and Japanese girls sang their school song. Finally all received certificates with the whole group photo on the back. Thank you Mrs Wilkinson.

A huge thank you also goes to Mrs Walker for arranging all the homestays, and to the parents who offered to be homestays. This New Zealand experience is so greatly enhanced by students being able to be part of a family.

On Tuesday the group departed for a preschool or to go to Cambridge for a farm stay, and on Friday they all return to Kyoto.

It was a busy day and judging by the tears on Tuesday morning our Japanese visitors were sad to leave.

Once again Marist College showed the family feeling for which we are renowned. Gratitude goes to all who made this visit such a success.

Congratulations to Celestine Howard who has been accepted in the Auckland Philharmonia Summer school. She is one of the few selected secondary school students to participate in a week of vigorous rehearsals and workshops, which will lead to a performance of a classical repertoire. Of the three instrument Celestine plays – Violin, Piano and Trombone, she has favoured the Violin to participate in the orchestra. We wish Celestine all the best as she represents Marist College in this prestigious event.

TennisJunior AIt was a convincing win for Marist today. We were playing against a team with a number of girls still learning the game. However the sun was shining and it was a good opportunity for some of our girls to try out new techniques they have been working on at trainings.

Junior CAnother great day at tennis on Saturday with Marist C v Onehunga at Onehunga College courts. Both doubles and singles matches were quite evenly matched, with serve and rallies showing great improvement. Onehunga won the overall team game. It was wonderful to see Marist values displayed with excellent sportsmanship and teamwork.

Junior B & D Marist B & D played each other this week. The B team put up tough opposition on every court in beautiful conditions. In fact Marist B was so strong the games went quickly leaving a bit of time for a few parents to challenge our girls to a game of doubles. We are grateful to Laci Sampson for stepping in to help round out our doubles. Skills were gained and lots of fun was had. Marist B winner 9:0.

SPORTS UPDATEFutsalYear 8It was an excellent result and team combinations for Year 8 Futsal. There were an awesome number of saves by Michayla and Paige. Assists to Bri, Charleigh and Paige. Cracker goals to Michayla, Pippa, Paige and Charleigh. Player of the day was Pippa. She scored her goal with a lovely volley from a distance. Well done team!

TouchMarist Junior Girls TouchWith only one touch game this week, our Marist junior girls played exceptionally against St Mary's Navy starting off with some quick tries on the first half and finishing strong in the second half. Our girls used their set plays they practised and made good yards in the middle to have the ability to score tries on either side of the field, with our girls winning 12:2. A big thank you to Miss Middleton who continues to work hard with our girls this touch season.

Volleyball

Marist AMarist A played against Epsom Girls Gold losing on both sets and it didn't get any easier against Marcellin Year 10, again losing on both sets. This was a good learning experience for our team which they will work hard on at practise and come back strong for the upcoming games.

Marist B Our Marist B played against Dio, winning both sets but came up short against Marcellin, losing both sets. A good effort from all the girls despite having no reserves. A big thank you to our Year 13 student coaches Radelle and Evangeline.
