It is important for the Academy and pupils that the way pupils present themselves is positive and suitable for a school environment and creates the impression of a disciplined and well-ordered establishment. It is expected that all pupils will come to school every day in a neat, clean uniform, giving the message that our pupils take pride in belonging to Castleford Academy. The support of parents is essential to this process.

Year 10 & 11

Year 7, 8 & 9

Shirts MUST be white school shirts, pointed collars with the top button fastened and long enough to be tucked in.

Optional plain black v-necked, long sleeved jumper or cardigan.

Visible socks should be black or white.

Plain black sensible shoes.

Castleford Academy clip-on tie.

Castleford Academy Blazer.

Plain black tailored trousers or plain black tailored knee length skirt.

Tights should be plain black opaque.

Plain black sensible shoes.

Please ensure that all your items of clothing are marked with your child’s name

The uniform list seems straight forward but we know what children can be like when you take them shopping. On the following pages are a list of items that pupils have been told are deemed or are not deemed acceptable as school uniform. Any items described as plain must not have any patterns, marking or logos of any sort. The academy will not allow any item/fashion that the Governors feel would undermine ethos or discipline of the Academy. All decisions about uniform rests with the Academy.

Shoes should be low heeled, suitable for school and plain black. Coloured soles, studs, metallic bows or decorations are not allowed. Trainers or shoes that look like trainers, high fashion shoes, open toe, canvas footwear (including pumps), shoes with embellishments, UGG style boots or ankle boots are not allowed. The whole shoe, including the sole and the stitching, must be plain black. Wooden / brown heels are not allowed.

Shoes

Trousers & SkirtsTrousers should be tailored or boot cut ‘school’ trousers. Skirts should be tailored of suitable length and a style to be classed as business wear. Jeans, skinny, tapered, slim fit or narrow fit trousers, cropped or cut off trousers, leggings or footless tights or shorts are not allowed. No trousers or skirts with patch pockets on the outside, visible zips, including silver zips on back of skirt, studs or other decorative embellishments are suitable. No stretchy material or ‘t-shirt’ material. Belts must be plain black and worn through belt loops.

Shirts & TiesShirts must be school shirts, pointed collars not rounded and with top button fastened, not blouses or polo shirts. They must be long enough to stay tucked in and sleeves should not be rolled up.

Anything worn under shirts must be neutral in colour so it does not show through.Ties must be school ties and not be defaced by writing or by pulling threads.

Jumpers & CardigansJumpers or cardigans must be v-neck, not round neck. See through jumpers, cut off jumpers, loose knit jumpers or fashion jumpers, hooded tops and vest tops over shirts are not allowed. Jumpers must not be tucked in.

Make-up / NailsWe allow a little discreet make-up which would be deemed suitable for work.

No heavy eye make-up including eye liner or eyebrow make-up, no false eyelashes or bright lipstick.

Pupils will be asked to remove all excessive makeup.

Nails must be of a suitable length for practical lessons. If nails are too long, you will be asked to trim them or stay in Step Up.

No visible tattoos are allowed in school. This includes henna and temporary tattoos.

HairHair colour must be natural in colour; a colour the child could have been born with. Silver, purple and deep red tones are not a natural colour. Please be aware semi-permanent dyes do not always wash out after a few washes.

Any hair ornaments, including bobbles and scrunchies, must be black.

Extreme differences in length of hair is not suitable. Overall hair should be no shorter than a grade 2.

A skin fade or bare scalp is not suitable. Pupils with an unsuitable haircut may be placed in Step Up, Connect or IE.

JewelleryOne stud earring with a butterfly back may be worn in each ear, multiple studs and ‘stretchers’ or ‘retainers’ are not allowed. No other piercings are allowed at all, including clear piercings.

Please think carefully about healing times before allowing your child to have a piercing as no exceptions will be made.

No visible necklaces or bracelets to be worn unless they wear a medical bracelet or if it is a charity bracelet that the school is specifically fundraising for at that time. No rings allowed. A watch may be worn. Jewellery will be confiscated if seen by SLT.

No pupils will be allowed in lessons with incorrect uniform!

Outdoor coats must not be worn in school. Please ensure all items of clothing are marked with your child’s name.

Important notes for pupils in all year groupsThe uniform lists seem straightforward but we know what children are like when you take them shopping! Please note that what some stores advertise as school uniform may not be acceptable for Castleford Academy. Our recommended supplier is ‘Better and Bright’.

Responsibility badges e.g. School Council may be worn, no other badges are allowed. No visible necklaces are allowed. No bracelets, unless it is a charity bracelet worn while the school is fundraising for a particular charity or a medical bracelet. No rings are allowed. A watch may be worn.

Tattoos - The law says that children should not have a permanent tattoo. No visible tattoos, including henna or temporary tattoos, are allowed in school, even in hot weather in summer.

The Academy will also not allow any item/fashion that the Governors believe would undermine the ethos or discipline of the Academy. The final decision on what is allowed rests with the Academy.

No pupils will be allowed in lessons with incorrect uniform. Uniform checks occur daily with Form Tutors and members of SLT. Form tutors are encouraged to send pupils with uniform to Step Up if an item of uniform is deemed unsuitable for lessons, pupils are able to borrow uniform. We allow one borrow per half term. Pupils will be asked to work from Step Up if they cannot borrow. If a pupil refuses, further sanctions will apply.

If your child has a temporary medical condition, for example a broken arm, and a risk assessment suggests it is safe for them to be around school, the Headteacher may agree to relax the uniform rules for an agreed period of time. The academy will give due regard to protected characteristics. Thank you for your support.

Pupils will not be allowed in lessons with incorrect uniform.If a pupil arrives with incorrect uniform they should be sent to Step Up where staff will:1. Contact parents to arrange to remedy the situation.2. Lend uniform to a pupil once per half term.

• Pupils will be required to sign for borrowed items and return them at the end of the day.

• If a pupil has come to school in an incorrect item, Step Up will keep that item securely until the end of the day.

3. Give out wipes to remove make up.

Pupils are allowed to borrow uniform once per half term. If they ask to borrow again they will go to Connect. If a pupil fails to return a borrowed item at the end of the day or the next morning they will go in Connect. All records are kept on a secure spreadsheet.

Incorrect wearing of uniformPupils will be put in the uniform book for:• Too much make up.• Wearing jewellery not allowed according to the uniform rules.• Not having their shirt tucked in.• Having blazer or shirt sleeves rolled up.• Not wearing their blazer (Y7-9).

If a pupil’s name is in the uniform book three times (cumulative over the year) they will have half an hour lunch detention. Persistent breaking of the uniform rules will result in internal exclusion, connect and parents invited in.

In summer, during hot weather, the Headteacher may allow pupils to remove their blazers and/or ties around school. Pupils will be required to have their tie/blazer with them in school at all times and normal sanctions will apply.

JewelleryMembers of Senior Leadership Team will confiscate items of jewellery which are not allowed. These items will be kept securely until the end of the half term when they will be returned to the owner.

If a parent requires the jewellery to be returned sooner they should contact school to make an appointment with Mrs Salmon or Mr King who will return it. All other staff will ask a pupil to remove the jewellery and put the pupil’s name in the uniform book.

Pupils refusing to remove jewellery will be referred to Senior Staff who will confiscate it.
