Introduction to the Medical Centre

The San Rossore Medical Centre is a specialist healthcare facility that carries out diagnosis and treatment activities under the system of hospitalization, day hospital and outpatient context.

The centre was set up at the end of the ‘60s as a multi-disciplinary centre, and over the years it has become an important benchmark for private health care in Tuscany, acquiring national importance over time. In 2002 the Madonna Holding acquired San Rossore with the aim of creating a Medical Centre of International standing and excellence. From 2006 onwards, under the direction

of the architect Francesco Tomassi, works to renovate and expand the facilities have been carried out in order to guarantee patients a hospital stay in a comfortable environment capable of offering excellent services.

Medical assessments and tests and general or targeted check-ups are rapidly carried out in the Diagnosis Centre. There is also an on-site Medical Centre for specialist out-patient appointments in a wide range of specialties. The in-patient ward has private bedrooms of one or two beds. The services available are listed in the following pages.

How to Find us

The facility is easy to access, close to Pisa

railway station, Galileo Galilei international airport and the main

motorway exits. There is a large on-site car park (150 spaces) reserved for patients,

visitors and family.

Fundamental principles and patient care

At San Rossore Medical Centre the patient is at the centre of everything we do, and this is our founding principle.

All internal resources, facilities, equipment and staff are committed to solving the patient’s health problems, making sure we provide sufficient information about organisation, access to services, diagnosis, necessary therapies and rehabilitation. We provide the highest level of personal comfort and assistance and respect our patients’ dignity.

The Centre has an overall extension of 508,000 square feet, articulated in two separate buildings; the main building and a separate building, set in ample grounds, and a recently built field for athletic rehabilitation.

The separate building has a surface area of 5,700 square feet split over two levels, and houses the Radiotherapy Department.

The main building measures approximately 207,000 square feet and is split into five levels. It includes:

Basement: doctor’s offices and gym for physical medicine and rehabilitation, with changing rooms; administration, hospitalisation, admittance and discharge desk, kitchen and pharmacy.

Hall: administration offices (switchboard, medical secretariat and customer relations office).

Ground Floor: doctor’s offices, the Tuscan Vascular Centre, the Ophthalmologic Laser Centre, Diagnostics: Radiology, Computed Tomography, MRI, Bone densitometry, Medical analysis LAB.

First Floor: rooms with en-suite facilities, operating block with 3 operating theatres plus outpatient surgeries, intensive care unit, maternity block with a labour room, delivery room and nursery.

Second Floor: rooms with en suite facilities, doctor’s offices, ophtalmology and cardiological diagnostics.

Third Floor: entirely devoted to the Psychiatry clinic department.

San Rossore Medical Centre currently has bedrooms available with one or two beds, each furnished to provide patients with the best possible comfort and give access to the best assistance facilities during convalescence.

In addition to the standard equipment, each room has:

Some bedrooms also have a sitting room and most of them are equipped with an extra bed for a carer.

Each room is directly connected to the nurses’ station on its floor to ensure rapid intervention.

A large car park (150 lots), the garden, the café and restaurant service are available to patients and visitors, and waiting rooms are located on the ground floor and in proximity of medical surgeries.

Highly qualified medical experts carry out the diagnostic tests and treatments and responsibility for services. Each type of test is carried out quickly and the result is promptly available.

INTENSIVE CARE UNIT

The Medical Centre is equipped with an Intensive and Subintensive Medical Care and Recovery Room department. Thanks to the procedures in place, the equipment and the technology available, the Intensive Care Unit at the San Rossore Medical Centre is an essential unit able to ensure a high level of care and patient safety to all patients undergoing highly specialized operations who need postoperative intensive care assistance. This also allows for the treatment of complex patients with pathologies associated to medical or surgical operations.

Magnetic Resonance

HYBRID OPERATING THEATER

Our brand new operating room is 68 sq.m. wide, which means plenty of space to host today’s newest technology: diagnostic, anesthesiological and surgical equipment, streaming and videoconference devices and IT management system.

There is even a separated monitoring area connected through an audio/video system to the operating theater.

An integrated centralized IT system manages and controls the entire room, its devices and equipment to create the best synchronization between man and technology and so give our specialist the best operating conditions possible.

This integrated system produces more comfort for our specialist, total management of each tool from one spot thanks to a vocal control or a touchscreen device, so without the necessity of moving and less time needed to configure the equipment.

This new hybrid and integrated operating room of San Rossore Medical Center has furthermore the ISO 5 certification since its advanced technology aim at a complete reduction of infections, an important and dangerous factor when it comes to operations.

All components of the room (machinery, structure, itineraries and lay-out etc..) contribute to decrease significantly the risk of post-operations’ infections.

Additional services and comfort

Personal care

The centre offers the following personal care services:

• Laundry service (ext. 275): room delivery within 2 days

• Hairdresser: to book an appointment please contact the head nurse (ext. 404)

Meals

The nursing staff order meals for in-patients by completing the relevant form according to the doctors’ instructions.

Breakfast is served at 8am, lunch at 12.30pm, a snack at 4.30pm and dinner at 7pm.

There is a cafeteria which is open at lunch time.

Meals follow a seasonal menu. Changes can be made if the dietician suggests specific foods which are more suitable for the patient’s condition, or due to religious beliefs.

Bringing food into the centre is strictly forbidden, even if it is not consumed in the in-patients department.

Café

Patients and visitors can enjoy a café service from Monday to Friday from 7.30am to 8pm, from 7.30am to 6pm on Saturday and from 7.30am to 1pm on Sundays.

The extension for the café is 227.

News-stand

Patients and visitors can buy newspapers and magazines from the café every day.

Free Wi-Fi connection

The in-patients department has a free Wi-Fi internet connection.

Safety regulations for patients and visitors

As per the current legislation, all the staff at the Medical Centre have been fully trained on how to act in an emergency and the safety regulations are visible inside the centre. We therefore ask all visitors and patients to carefully follow the instructions provided by the staff.

International Patients

In addition to a team of highly specialized doctors and a facility equipped with the most modern technologies, our services also include:

•Assistance in obtaining visa

• Linguistic assistance with dedicated interpreter

• Transfers to and from the Pisa airport and railway station

Patient Rights and Responsibilities

The right to be respected in one’s personal dignity and moral, political and religious beliefs:

• Protection from any pressure - direct or indirect - in relation to the patient’s beliefs. This is fundamental for a mutual trusting relationship between patient and healthcare operatives

• Confidentiality in relation to appointments and treatments. A living and safe environment where patients can live and be treated as people and which prevent isolation due to hospitalisation

Freedom of choice:

• The freedom to choose the medical team and treatment techniques. Immediate access to the facilities.

• The right to refuse a diagnostic or therapeutic method

The right to high quality in health care:

• Attention to safety when practising medicine, delivering treatment and in patient assistance. High quality in services.

• Use of the latest scientific advances in medicine, diagnosis and therapy

• The doctors have the opportunity to use all means necessary in the context of diagnosis and care, and in respect of their professional independence, the only limitations being those of the moral imperatives of their profession

• Basic and specialist training of the medical and nursing staff including refresher courses

• Implementation of an internal quality control process

The right to be informed:

• Adequate information regarding healthcare facilities, all the services delivered, how to access the centre and the internal organisation

• Impartial advice about the possibility of further investigations and treatments available at other institutions

• Appropriate and accessible information about diagnosis and treatment, in order to allow the patient to provide his/her consent

• Confidentiality of the patient’s personal information and medical records

• Easy-to-identify internal staff

• Clear information about the accommodation standards and

hotel services or other services for increased comfort

• Possibility for relatives to excercise their right to be informed, in case the patient is not capable of doing so for himself/herself

The right to complain:

• The right to make a complaint

• Clear information about how complaints are handled

• Direct communication about the outcome of the complaint

• The possibility to express opinions about the quality of services

The right to privacy:

To fully implement the legislation on Confidentiality (Law 196/03), forms available at the patient office allow patients to:

• Ensure that their privacy is protected when admitted to the Medical Centre, with the exception of the attending staff.

• Identify the people who may or may not be informed of the state of their health

• Receive information about the ways in which clinical records are issued and medical results delivered

Permanent survey on quality as perceived by patients

The level and standards of services provided by the Medical Centre are regularly assessed and always aim at constant improvement. In fact, one of the fundamental features of private healthcare is to provide the best possible treatment in order to meet patients’ expectations. Doctors are committed to quality, efficiency and effectiveness in diagnosis and therapy according to ethics.

The goal of the administration is the improvement of the quality of the services provided to patients. All patients are asked to complete a questionnaire they are given when they first come to the Medical Centre. This is then analysed and the data are used to measure the level of satisfaction and to assess possible problems and their importance. This is done in order to guarantee that all the necessary actions will be

undertaken to improve our overall performance. The questionnaire is strictly confidential; if it bears the name of the person who filled it in, it is treated with the utmost confidentiality (pursuant to Italian Privacy Law, Legislative Decree 196/03).

In any case, data gathered from the questionnaires are protected by law and can only be used in aggregate form.

Complaints

The San Rossore Medical Centre guarantees excellent patient care at all times, also by providing the patients the possibility to file a complaint to the Patient Relations Office.
