Childhood Classics
in every home
A social project initiated by Curtea Veche Publishing
and supported by The Royal House of Romania
A Dramatic Reality
• Poor results in the educational system: over 50% of high school graduates don’t
get a Baccalaureate degree; difficulties with the national evaluation tests;
• A dramatic decrease of the interest for reading: Romania comes last in the
European Union’s classification regarding the number of books being read per capita;
over half of the citizens (53.3%) have difficulties with reading comprehension, placing
Romania last in Europe;
• Government’s lack of interest: Romania is among the very few countries in the
European Union that don’t offer reading programs adapted to the students’
comprehension level.
As an important publishing company, it is our duty to ask ourselves
what will happen
with the future generationsif the children today lose their interest in
reading
?Therefore we decided to launch
to encourage children to read. A long-term program, with real impact.
a national program
• In 2012, we launched “Cărțile copilăriei” (“Childhood Classics”) – retelling
renowned books in universal literature, edited in collaboration with teachers and
psychologists in order to address children aged between 8 - 14;
• The first book collection in Romania conceived as a basis for a national
alternative reading program, adapted to children’s comprehension;
1 We have created a special collection of books
• Each book comes with a message from His Royal Highness Prince Radu of
Romania, Ambassador to the collection and to the reading program.
2 “Cărțile copilăriei” is officially supported by
The Romanian Royal Family
• February-May 2013;
• 32 reading workshops, 640 children, 7 cities (Arad,
Brașov, Bucureşti, Cluj-Napoca, Constanţa, Iaşi,
Timişoara);
• The workshops’ structure developed by
a theatre pedagogue, based on the
books of “Cărțile copilăriei” series;
• The workshops are held by known
artists, like Cove, Ioana Ginghină, Aylin;
3 We have developed the reading workshops
Clasicii repovestiți (Classics Retold)
What next?
We continue the efforts to establish a nationwide alternative
reading program, adapted to the comprehension level of children aged 8 - 14 and
to encourage a healthy appetite for reading among them.
We plan to achieve results by following two directionsthrough which we aim at directly reaching both children and parents:
1. We
organize school meetings with parents and students
• HRH Prince Radu of Romania attends meetings with
parents, teachers and children in schools all over the
country during the 2013/2014 school year, explaining the
importance of reading.
• The meetings include a reading moment sustained by a well-
known local actor or by a deserving student.

2. At the
same time, we’re conducting a social campaignto which we invite you as a partner to place
Cărțile copilăriei” in every home
• The need for books among the under-privileged population is so
great that, along with HRH Prince Nicholas of Romania we
initiate a national campaign for donating books, with real results
in the development of the young;
• We bring the passion for reading to children from under-
privileged communities in rural environment's;
• In implementing the project, we will work with local
volunteers and NGOs from the areas where we’re conducting
the donation.
The donation campaign
Project objectives:
1) Facilitating access to books for children– we will donate, in 4 months ’ time, 8.000
books from“Cărțile copilăriei” series to children who can’t afford the access to books;
2) Increasing the interest for reading – continuing the donation campaign with a local
program – book clubs organized by teachers and volunteers.
Campaign beneficiaries:
• 8.000 pupils with difficult financial situations;
• Donations made to schools from over 80 rural communities, selected according to the
poverty map of Romania and the graduation rate at the national evaluation tests in 2013 (the
largest needs are reported in Moldova, Muntenia, Dobrogea and Oltenia).
