Road Maintenance Program
The last eight months has been a busy period
for the Council with the completion of 617 km
of the much needed patrol grading program in
the district, and 288.5 km of fire track and
buffer zones that was required to reduce the
risk of fires in the fire season.
The scheduled patrol grading program has now
been completed and at this month’s
Engineering Committee Meeting we have
recommended that an additional 200km of
patrol grading was added to this year’s works
program, to make sure that our road network is
maintained in good order and continues to
improve. This will bring the total approved
patrol grading program up to 817kms this year.
This represents approximately 70% of all
unsealed roads in the district.
Flood Damage Maintenance
The Engineering teams are busy with the flood
damage repair program through the district this
month, with many creek crossing and gutters in
need of minor repairs and maintenance. In
addition to this work, the committee
recommended that an additional budget
amount of $33,000 was spent on major flood
damage repairs to 600 metres on Crocker Hill
Road, 200 metres on McCallum Road, Barratta
Road, Boolcunda Road, Pamatta Road, Belton
Road. This work is scheduled as a high priority.
Road Construction – Re-sheeting Program.
The Engineering Team are currently finishing
the Minburra Road re-sheeting Project (due to
be completed by 21 March), and this concludes
the re-sheeting program that was established
for this year. The following re-sheeting projects
(roads) have been finished this year.
The Engineering committee has recommended
that the 2014/2015 road construction program is
accelerated and next year’s projects are started
as soon as possible. This may result in additional
re-sheeting of the road network before July.
OTHER WORKS
Next month the Council will also continue work
on sport and recreation facilities and is planning
to install additional equipment at the oval and
complete the BMX track with the youth project
team.
GREEN SLIPS (MAINTENANCE REQUEST)
The community are encouraged to lodge a
“Green Slip” for any work that is needed to
community facilities. The engineering team use
these green slips to prioritise works around the
community. Please call or use the online works
request form to lodge a maintenance request.

Northern and Yorke Natural Resources
Management Board News Release
It’s not too late to take action on Silverleaf Nightshade. Land
managers are reminded that it is not too late to guard against
Silverleaf Nightshade, (solanum elaeagnifolium) the virulent
South Australian summer weed.
First identified in the northern agricultural districts in the
1940s, Silverleaf Nightshade has spread far and wide, infesting
thousands of hectares across the rich agricultural area of the
Northern and Yorke region.
Recent dry conditions are assisting farmers control a suite of
traditional summer weeds which do not appear to be present
in some areas, however, Natural Resources Northern and
Yorke Landscape Team Leader, Grant Roberts said that it is
important for landholders to remain vigilant and take action
on any infestation sightings.
“Silverlieaf Nightshade is a deep-rooted perennial plant and
can greatly affect winter crop yield through water and nutrient
uptake,” Mr Roberts said.
“Once it becomes established, a land manager’s control
strategy may quickly move from an effort of eradication to the
less effective approach of managing established plants and
trying to minimise their impact.”
The movement of Silverleaf Nightshade from one property to
another occurs mainly through seed movement by stock, soil
and fodder. Within a property, cultivation of root fragments
and their subsequent growth is the main method of spread.
“In this on-going battle against Silverleaf Nightshade,
prevention needs to focus on stopping weeds entering and
becoming established on agricultural properties,” Mr Roberts
said.
“High priority must be given to even the smallest infestation of
Silverleaf Nightshade, which can be spot-sprayed and treated
as part of an ongoing control and monitoring plan.”
Where colonies of Silverleaf Nightshade merge to become
major infestations, treatment should be done with a view to
reduce seed set and therefore the risk of seed movement
posed by grazing stock.
The Natural Resources Northern and Yorke roadside control
program has commenced and landholders who wish to do
their own control work on half road widths that adjoin their
property, may do so but are advised to contact an authorised
officer prior to commencing such activities.
The Lower North NRM Group is planning two mid-march
Silverleaf Nightshade workshops for members of the public
which includes information from Dr. John Heap of NRM
BioSecurity. Dates will be advertised in the near future.
For further advice with plant identification and management,

Carrieton Rodeo
Just when you thought that the 61st Carrieton Rodeo was done and dusted …
Miss Rodeo Australia.
The lead-up to the 2013 rodeo saw Miss Rodeo Australia, Mallory Doyle, along with several local rodeo representatives, and associated visitors visit the Orroroo District Hospital on Friday 27 December. The residents, family and friends, and some of the staff gathered under the shade of the verandah as Mallory and her entourage rode their horses into the hospital grounds and up to the rails. Rodeo club president Wayne Williams gave a short speech, and introduced the riders to those present. Mallory, from Ballarat, spoke about her role as Miss Rodeo Australia 2014, and her recent visit to Canada and the United States, where she attended the rodeo finals in both countries. Legendary 1950s rodeo competitor Dick White, from Globe Derby also addressed the group. Hospital activities coordinator, Leanne Fieg thanked all those who participated for taking the time to visit and involve the hospital residents in this iconic event. This was followed by an impressive afternoon tea and refreshments, when Mallory mingled with the residents and staff, and signed Miss Rodeo photographs.
Those present were even given an impromptu performance of the first verse of the National Anthem by some members of the Carrieton Mens Rodeo Club Choir.
From the hospital, the riders, including rodeo club secretary Glyn Shackleford, rode down to the Main Street for a photo shoot in front of the Town Hall. The mounted group created a lot of interest, attracting tourists and locals, and upping the publicity for the rodeo. Mallory visited several local sponsors, signing more photos for her fans.
Meanwhile, up at Carrieton, volunteer workers were busy finalising the venue and facilities in readiness for the big day.
On Friday evening, the Orroroo and Pekina-Carrieton cricket teams, usually bitter rivals, banded together at the clubrooms to provide a fantastic barbeque tea for locals and the many visitors present for the rodeo. During the evening a presentation was made to the Carrieton Rodeo Mens Choir director, Sandi McMenamin, for her support in the months leading up to the rodeo.
Miss Carrieton Rodeo Quest.
The 2013 rodeo saw three young women, Claudia Hunter from Helen Springs, N.T., Jody Batchelor from Grong Grong, N.S.W. and Bec Keogh from nearby Hawker, enter this event. The quest, judged by Bill and Barb Willoughby from Wepowie, is based not only on equine skills (theory and practice), but also local, national and international knowledge, was taken out by Jody Batchelor. Jody is a barrel racer and competed soon after being crowned and sashed by current Miss Rodeo Australia 2014, Mallory Doyle. This was Mallory’s first official rodeo event in Australia since winning the title in late October 2013. Jody, who now takes over the
role of Miss Carrieton Rodeo from Mel Francis of Riverton, will represent the Carrieton club at rodeos all over Australia.
Rodeos rely on volunteers and sponsors, and this year, as last, Oz Minerals was a major supporter of the Carrieton Rodeo, and Geoff Deans from Oz Minerals community relations department, officially opened the rodeo with some cheerful words. This was followed by a medley of songs by Adelaide-based singer/songwriter/cabaret entertainer and choir director, Sandi McMenamin. Sandi was then joined by the infamous Carrieton Rodeo Men’s Choir, who accompanied her, singing the chorus of her song, “Adelaide you’re a lady”. Then it was “hats off gents” as the choir made their one, and possibly only public performance of Sandi’s arrangement of the Australian National Anthem, “Advance Australia Fair” and “We are Australian”. This was warmly received by the crowd, who donated generously towards the cause, Beyond Blue awareness, throughout the night.
Competing cowboys entered the arena and were introduced to the crowd, estimated to be around 2,500. During the performance, several time-event riders, carrying varying flags of significance - now a formal part of opening the rodeo – rode into the arena.
As a mark of respect for two late rodeo veterans, Patrick Smith from Belton and Vivian Heath from Roseworthy, both who passed away in the year since the last rodeo, Mick Batchelor, a pick-up rider from Grong Grong (and father of Miss Carrieton Rodeo 2014), also rode into the arena leading a saddled but rider-less horse, with boots reversed in the stirrups.
Results and reflections.
Beginning with the first round of Team Roping, the events were off with a bang. Many riders participated, but there can only be one winner; the Kym Michaelis (header) and Daniel Pearson (heeler) team with a time of 7.75 seconds. As the events rolled on, it came time for Carrieton’s first stockman’s ride in an Australian stock saddle, “just like they used to do”. This was a popular event with the crowd, many who would have never seen cowboys riding in a stock saddle before. But alas, for the young rough-riders, the horses, or perhaps the saddles with their high cantle and knee-pads, proved far too good, as none of the riders were able to score in this event.
The ever-popular barrel racing proved to be quite entertaining with 18 ladies competing. Angaston cowgirl, Amanda Teilen took out the grand prize with a total time of 18.144 seconds, earlier this year Amanda took part in her first national finals series.
Bareback riding saw the old campaigner from over the hill at Wilmington, Scott Fraser, the only rider to score in this event, show why he is still one of the best riders in the world, with 74 point on the horse, ‘Flying High’.
Whilst Dick White’s grandson Daniel Pearson from Kapunda picked up the cheque for the 2nd Div. Bronc ride, only four points separated the top three in round one of the Open Saddle Bronc. The 2011 Saddle Bronc champ, and this year’s
Goyder’s Line Gazette 5
runner-up, Glen Kent combined with ‘Hard Landing’ to claim top money. This is not the first time this horse has carried him to victory. Last year’s winner Leslie Stacey had to be content with second place, while Hay, N.S.W. cowboy, James Maloney and Clare cowboy, Brad Williams followed up.
Young Peterborough cowboy Beau Kerr rode to first in the Junior Bullride, but no 2nd Division Bull Riders could stay the distance.
The last event, the Open Bull Ride, was heading the same way until Chiltern, Vic. rider, Bryden Atkins worked the steel on 187RW ‘Arait Juice Box’ for top points of 83. This is Bryden’s second win here, having achieved greatness back in 2011 when he took ‘Kaos’ across the line, before leaving for Stevenville, Texas, U.S.A., where he now resides. Brock Webber from Tassie, stayed with ‘Red Back’ for a credible 76.
The band Kopy Katz provided the evening’s entertainment. During the evening a Beyond Blue fund-raising blanket appeal – blankets were in short supply due to the welcome cool change - was conducted by Shane Rowe and helpers, with assistance of Miss Rodeo Australia Mallory Doyle.
Wayne Williams, Glyn Shackleford and the committee thank all those who took part, attended, and contributed in any way, to yet another successful day, especially those loyal supporters who worked during the lead-up to the event. To the men involved in John Parnell’s unique choir - from all parts of this great land - we thank you, for “We are one, but we are many, and from all the lands on earth we come”.
Rodeo, supporting the community – see you at the same place in 2014.

Goodbye
Saying goodbye is sad. It is eight years this month since
I first came from Port Hedland to Orroroo as Frontier
Services Patrol
Minister for the Uniting Church. Now I am
concluding my placement at the end of March and will
be leaving Orroroo. For those who are unsure of what
my work has involved, it comes from that of Rev. John
Flynn who began the Australian Inland
Mission with travelling Patrol work and what is now
known as ‘The Flying Doctor.’ I have been living here in
the town as Patrol minister travelling to more isolated
areas visiting station people, truck stops, hotels, police
and others. In fact, wherever there are people living
and working in those
areas. Of course I have not managed to visit
everybody, but hopefully been an
encouraging presence at times. I guess it is often about
being there and being a
listening ear. There have also been
weddings, baptisms and funerals as well as attending
and enjoying various community events including
gymkhanas and memorials. I am grateful for the
hospitality shown as I went about my
travels in the Barrier Highway areas and Gawler
Ranges.
I want to say thank you to Orroroo as I joined in the community here during this time. I have appreciated
and enjoyed making my home in the town, being part of different events and being touched by the lives of
people here. After leaving Orroroo I will be taking long service leave in Adelaide and reflecting on future
directions. Yes, leaving is sad but I will not forget my time here in Orroroo and further out. I wish to
commend to you the new Patrol minister Pastor Paul and Robyn Glazbrook.
As you may have heard me say before, may God’s Spirit of Hope and Peace and
Goodwill be yours to receive and to give in the year and years ahead. All the very best and thank you.

Looking Back
Looking back to 1864 when a fire raged through the Pekina
area...
South Australian Register, 26 January 1864
Bush Fire. — A bush fire occurred on the Pekina run on
January 17th, which started at Maurice's Hill and burnt in the
direction of Bowda, about 60 square miles of country, some
huts, and fences. After devastating the country for about 20
hours the further ravages of the fire were stopped by
a change of wind, and rain falling heavily soon extinguished
the flames. No sheep were destroyed, and the immense
exertions of the overseer and men alone prevented
Tarcowie head station from being burnt.
South Australian Chronicle, Saturday 11 June 1892
ORROROO, June 10.
On Thursday sight a pleasant evening was spent at Walloway Hotel on the occasion of a social to Mr. Knight, who is leaving the township. Mr. Robertson presided, and Mr. Mannion occupied the vice-chair. Various toasts were duly honored, and the guest received the good wishes of all present.
The Chronicle (Adelaide), Thursday 19 September 1940
Mr. F. Clark
By the death of Mr. Frederick Clark, of Orroroo, at the age of 87 years, the north has lost one of us pioneers, who had had a most interesting life. Born at the Burra in 1853, he was married in 1879 at St. Mary's Church, Burra, and lived at Yongala for the following three years. Owing to an accident Mr. Clark was compelled to relinquish business; On his recovery he worked for Mr. R. Hill, of Jamestown, going from there to Blinman, residing there while the mines were in full swing. Mr. Clark had recollections of hunting in the Angorichina country, and varied experiences with the blacks. From Blinman Mr. and Mrs. Clark went to Orroroo, where Mr. Clark managed Mr. O'Connor's saddlery business for two years when he started on his own. In 1903 he took over the management of the Orroroo saddlery, and ironmongery emporium of Parnell & Judell. The partnership was dissolved and Mr. Parnell took over the business. Mr. Clark remained as manager, a position he retained until his 80th birthday. He took a great interest in Friendly Societies, and was a member of the Oddfellows' Lodge for more than 60 years and a member of the institute committee for more than 50 years. He and Mrs. Clark, who predeceased him on March 9, 1939, had been members of St. Paul's Church, Orroroo, since 1884. Last year on February 6 Mr. and Mrs. Clark celebrated their diamond wedding. There were seven children— Mesdames Gale (Orroroo), F. A. Wilson (Kangaroo Island), Miss Clark (Orroroo), Messrs. W. Clark (Hawthorn), Bert
Clark (Millswood Estate), J. Clark (Hallett), C. Clark (Orroroo) — eleven grand children, and three great grandchildren.
The Register, Wednesday 17 November 1926
From Orroroo; Mr. H. C. Harslett has written as follows to
the Maughan Thiem Motor Company:— Under separate cover
I am sending you a photograph of my model 22 Ruggles truck.
I am extremely pleased at the results I am receiving for the
petrol mileage averages 12 to the gallon. Just recently I carted
and towed a boring plant out of Horrock's Pass to Orroroo
Blocks, a distance of 40 miles, over bad roads. The weight was
4 tons 10 cwt. 2 quarters. I consider it impossible to beat the
Ruggles for hard service.

Looking Back IDIOT SIGHTING 1: I went through the McDonald's driveway window and I gave the cashier a $5 note. Our total was $4.25, so I also handed her 25c. She said, 'you gave me too much money.' I said, 'Yes I know, but this way you can just give me a dollar coin back.' She sighed and went to get the manager who asked me to repeat my request. I did so, and he handed me back the 25c, and said 'We're sorry but we don't do that kind of thing.' The cashier then proceeded to give me back 75 cents in change. Do not confuse the people at MacD's in Shepparton Vic. IDIOT SIGHTING 2: We had to have the garage door repaired. The repairman told us that one of our problems was that we did not have a 'large' enough motor on the opener. I thought for a minute, and said that we had the largest one made at that time, a 1/2 horsepower. He shook his head and said, 'You need a 1/4 horsepower.' I responded that 1/2 was larger than 1/4 and he said, 'NOOO, it's not. Four is larger than two.' We haven't used that repairman since. Happened in Bankstown NSW. IDIOT SIGHTING 3: I live in a semi rural area. We recently had a new neighbour call the local council to request the removal of the WOMBAT CROSSING sign on our road. The reason: 'Too many wombats are being hit by cars out here! I don't think this is a good place for them to be crossing anymore.' Story from Bauple Qld IDIOT SIGHTING 4: My daughter went to a Mexican takeaway and ordered a taco. She asked the person behind the counter for 'minimal lettuce.' He said he was sorry, but they only had iceberg lettuce.
From Castle Hill, Sydney ........ IDIOT SIGHTING 5: I was at the airport, checking in at the gate when an airport employee asked, 'Has anyone put anything in your baggage without your knowledge?' To which I replied, 'If it was without my knowledge, how would I know?' He smiled knowingly and nodded, 'That's why we ask.' This happened at Melbourne Airport IDIOT SIGHTING 6: The pedestrian light on the corner beeps when it's safe to cross the street. I was crossing with an 'intellectually challenged' co-worker of mine. She asked if I knew what the beeper was for. I explained that it signals blind people when the light is red. Appalled, she responded, 'What on earth are blind people doing driving?!' She is a government employee in the Adelaide P.O. SA IDIOT SIGHTING 7: When my wife and I arrived at a car dealership to pick up our car after a service, we were told the keys had been locked in it. We went to the service department and found a mechanic working feverishly to unlock the driver's side door. As I watched from the passenger side, I instinctively tried the door handle and discovered that it was unlocked.
'Hey,' I announced to the technician, 'its open!' His reply, 'I know. I already did that side.' Holden Dealership Townsville Qld

AROUND THE RINKS WITH WRONG " BIAS "
Having missed over a month of competition bowls due to weather and fires within the region top division Boucher have returned with good form winning the last three games against BHAS , Peterborough and Laura. This will be a huge surprise to some who had visions of Boucher being relegated to second division. Well done to all for a huge effort in responding into a great team effort. Second division O'Shaughnessy have struggled this season through inconsistent availability of members for different reasons and look as though they will be relegated to Mahood division but as in all sport there are winners and losers but regardless of the result in many eyes just to compete and enjoy the game and company makes you all winners. I think in today's society too much emphasis on the attitude to our young people of having to win at all cost is a bad culture to teach. Win in a gratuitous manner but also except defeat and congratulate your conqueror in a sincere way. As of June this year the equal gender legislation will take effect for next years pennant season in both competitions ladies and men. Over the last few years the game of lawn bowls has certainly seen some huge changes in format and dress code, who would have thought that we would see coloured bowls and clothing introduced into this once very regimented sport. The new legislation may not be accepted by all members of the bowling fraternity but we are obliged to follow the ruling. The Orroroo Bowling Club has been to some extent involved in the open gender ruling for some time, as with most smaller clubs both genders have to play together to make the club a viable proposition. I am sure most people will see that the format can only strengthen clubs and members will have to accept the fact that men and ladies will be participating on the green at the same time and each will have to respect the other. With only one pennant game remaining, the season is drawing to a close with finals starting on the 15th March COMING EVENTS March 7th Singles Championship Friday 3 pm March 8th Melrose tea at Melrose March 14th Fun night at the Orroroo Bowling Club March 18th. Peterborough Art & Cultural Festival In 2007, under the guidance of Mary Martin and a small committee, Peterborough hosted the first Peterborough Art & Cultural Festival to complement the very successful Peterborough Art Prize. It was the perfect opportunity for community groups to showcase their talents with beautiful quilts, history displays, music, markets and open gardens. Since then, some events have changed, but the Festival has grown. A popular addition has been the Papier Mache/Wireworks Exhibition. It all started when a theme was needed for the 2011 Festival. Committee member Margaret Ball suggested papier mache figures. Everyone looked quizzical, with thoughts of balloons and pigs. “No, no” Margaret said. “I mean lifesize things, I’ve seen them in Burnie, Tasmania”. Margaret had seen the remarkable work of Ruth Rees and Pam Thorne. Thanks to a grant from Country Arts SA, and local sponsors, Pam and Ruth came to Peterborough and taught the basic skills of making lifesize papier mache figures to a keen group of people. Those first workshops have been the inspiration to continue with papier mache and extend into ‘Wireworks’. Peterborough Festival Inc. now holds regular workshops in the old Railway Goods Shed, from where creations of all types emerge, ready to be displayed at the Papier Mache/Wireworks Exhibition during the annual Peterborough Art & Cultural Festival. Come and see these wonderful figures, browse at the Markets, visit the colourful Peterborough Art Prize, see ‘Music through the Ages’ displayed at the History rooms, admire gorgeous quilts and more, at the Peterborough Art & Cultural Festival 2014. See advert this edition for more information.

ORROROO COMMUNITY CHURCH I am sure many of us were saddened to hear of the death of Charlotte Dawson in Sydney the other week. Her death received a lot of media attention because of her high profile. There are many others who die in a similar way but their death is only remembered by family and close friends.
I came across an interesting article that told of a 16 year old girl who had taken her own life in the Seine in Paris back in 1880. A Paris Pathologist ordered a plaster death mask of her face. Ironically in 1958 this anonymous girl’s features were used to model the First Aid mannequin Rescue Annie, on which thousands of students have practiced CPR. Though the girl’s identity remains a mystery, her face, it’s said has become the “most kissed face of all time”.
In God’s sight everyone is of value and special to Him. No one has greater value. Sadly there are many who see themselves as a nobody, of little value to society. Let us make sure that we let those around us know that, they are loved and cared for and be willing to ask the question R U OK?
God bless, John Cozens
THE PROBUS CLUB OF ORROROO
& DISTRICTS Our February meeting was attended by 37 members with 20 apologies received on the day.
We were entertained with a difference by Gaye Kuerschner who demonstrated the cooking of five different nutritious meals at a cost of $5 approximately per meal for each person. Gaye showed her expertise in the use of many different ingredients to the norm and the presentation of each dish was first class. All Members went home with a copy of the recipes and no doubt will endeavor to put them into practice. Vote of Thanks was given by Lorna Schmidt. Wayne McCallum will be our Speaker at the next meeting.

Following a review of our membership documentation
during the StarClub Accreditation process, we have
updated our membership application and renewal forms and
membership responsibilities in line with industry standards.
As from March 1st, you will be issued not only with a different
form to read and sign, but also a Orroroo
Community Gym Information Booklet which contains all the
information required by members of the Gym.
It is the responsibility of the Gym Management
Committee to ensure that gym users are aware of the safe and
proper use of the equipment and resources, and we are obliged
to offer a free induction to all new members from March
onwards.
Chris Hombsch will be conducting the inductions at the gym at a
time convenient for him and the new member. Please ring
mobile: 0427 680 139 to arrange an appointment.
New members will not be able to access their security tag for
entry into the gym until the induction session is signed off by
Chris.
This will bring the Orroroo Community Gym into line with many
of the professional gyms and safeguard the safety of gym users
and members.
Wall mirrors have been installed in the group
exercise room / supper room. These make the gym
look much larger and the group participants more
numerous!
However, they are a serious contribution for
checking technique when exercising.
Thank you to the councillors and Hall committee for
allowing us to install this important piece of
equipment!
If you are a lapsed member of the Community Gym,
and are still in procession of a security door tag and
probably will not be renewing your membership,
could you return your tag to the Orroroo Carrieton
District Council Office during business hours and
receive your $10 refund?
Security tags are deactivated at the end of the
month of membership expiry, so to reactivate the
tag, your membership will need to be renewed.
