TL;DR: - Signed as a free agent on 8/13/15 by the Braves - Began the 2015 season with the Southern Illinois Miners in the Frontier League and was 8-4 with a 2.36 ERA over 16 starts. - Threw the first (nine inning) no-hitter in Southern Illinois Miners history on 6/12/15 (9ip, 0h, 0r, 2bb, 10so) vs. the Evansville Otters. - Was named the Frontier League pitcher of the year following the 2014 season (8-4, 2.37 ERA, 21g, 20gs, 129.1ip, 86h, 46r, 34er, 60bb, 114so) - Originally drafted by the Orioles in the 7th round of the 2010 draft out of Pepperdine. - Spent the majority of the 2012 season with the Frederick Keys and was 1-2 with a 5.67 ERA over 19 games and five starts. - Was 3-7 with a 3.63 ERA over 44 games and 19 starts in the Orioles system between 2011 and 2012. LAST START: Bywater last started on 8/30 vs. Lynchburg and worked through a season low three innings pitched. He walked five, struck out eight and allowed five hits over five innings pitched. All three runs scored in the third and followed a two-out fielding error by Carlos Franco. The Mudcats lost the game 3-2 after also scoring two runs in the third. 8/20: Hurled seven scoreless frames with seven strikeouts in his home debut against the Salem Red Sox. He walked one and gave up just three hits while earning his first victory with the Mudcats. It was also his first victory in affiliated minor league baseball since he earned a victory in the Baltimore Orioles farm system with Double-A Bowie on September 3, 2012. 8/25: Started against the Blue Rocks and led the Mudcats to a 7-4 home while earning his second straight victory. He held the Blue Rocks scoreless through the fourth before allowing two runs in the fifth. In all he allowed three earned runs and nine hits over five and 2/3 innings and finished with his second straight home win. Bywater finished the start with a walk, three strikeouts and 99 pitches (71 strikes) over his near six inning start. Bywater was most recently with the Southern Illinois Miners of the Independent Frontier League and was 8-4 with a 2.36 ERA over 16 starts before joining the Braves system. He entered the 2015 season with Southern Illinois as the reigning Frontier League pitcher of the year after posting a 2.36 ERA over 21 starts and 20 games with Southern Illinois in 2014. Bywater threw the first no-hitter in Southern Illinois Miners history on 6/12/15 against the Evansville Otters. Bywater walked a batter in the fifth, walked one in the ninth and struck out 10 in the no-hit performance. WALK-OFF WINS (2) 4/13: Eric Garcia drove in pinch runner Connor Oliver from second with a game winning single to deep left in the ninth and the Mudcats walked off the visiting Blue Rocks 4-3 at Five County Stadium on 4/13. Garcia was 2-for-4 in the game and his single to deep left was driven to the warning track and beyond the reach of Wilmington outfielder Dominique Taylor. 7/6: Carlos Franco scored Dustin Peterson from first with a game winning double in the ninth and the Mudcats walked-off for the second time this season with a 3-2 win against the Pelicans on Monday night at Five County Stadium. Franco was 2-for-4 with two doubles and Peterson was 1-for-3 with the game winning run and a RBI single while leading the Mudcats to the series finale victory.

P.O.W.: Keith Curcio was named the Carolina League Player of the Week for the week ending on June 14. Curcio batted .542/.656/.792 between 6/8 and 6/14 and was 13-for-24 with three doubles, one home run and five RBI over that span. He also scored six runs, walked six times, hit his first home run of the season and stole two bases. 2015 CAROLINA MUDCATS FIELD STAFF

#4 - Luis Salazar, Manager Luis Salazar is entering his fifth season with the Atlanta Braves and his first as the manager of the Carolina Mudcats. The 2015 season marks Salazar’s 13th year as a minor league manager. Salazar guided Atlanta’s previous Class A Advanced club, the Lynchburg Hillcats, to the playoffs in three of the last four years. His 2012 Hillcats club finished 72-68 and won the Carolina League title versus Winston Salem. Salazar first joined the Braves organization in 2011 after spending three years as the hitting coach for the Los Angeles Dodgers Double A affiliate. He has over 15 years of coaching experience and in his career has compiled a 567-623 career record. Salazar has also managed the Vero Beach Dodgers (Class A, 2006), the Gulf Coast League Dodgers (Rookie, 2002-2005) and the Beloit Snappers (Class A, 1996-1997). Additionally, Salazar has been the hitting coach for Triple A Louisville (1998-1999) and Triple A Indianapolis (2000). Salazar played in 13

major league seasons and for four different teams. He played for the San Diego Padres (1980-1984, 1987, 1989), the Chicago White Sox (1985-1986), the Detroit Tigers (1988) and the Chicago Cubs (1989-1992). Salazar hit .261 with 1,070 hits over his 13 year MLB playing career.

LUIS SALAZAR MAJOR LEAGUE CAREER

#43 - Derrick Lewis, Pitching Coach The 2015 season marks the third for Derrick Lewis as the pitching coach of Atlanta’s Class A Advanced affiliate and his 13th overall in the Braves system. Lewis has been the pitching coach of the Lynchburg Hillcats (2011-2014), Rome Braves (2008-2010) Danville Braves (2004-2007) and the Gulf Coast League Braves (2004-2007). Lewis’ Danville Braves staff led the Appalachian League in earned run average (3.05), innings (604.2) and saves (26). They were also second in the league in strikeouts with 582. Lewis began his playing career with the Braves in 1997 when they selected him in the 20th round of the 1997 draft. His playing career as a pitcher in the Atlanta system lasted from 1997 through 2003. He was the Braves organizational pitcher of the year in 1999 after finishing second in the Carolina League in ERA while pitching for the Myrtle Beach Pelicans. In his career, Lewis was 31-37 with a 4.04 ERA over 161 MiLB games.

DERRICK LEWIS MINOR LEAGUE CAREER

#35 - Carlos Mendez, Hitting Coach Carlos Mendez enters his first season as the hitting coach of the Carolina Mudcats, his second with the Braves Class A Advanced club and his ninth season overall in the Braves organization. Mendez originally began last season with rookie level Danville, but was later assigned to Lynchburg in mid-April. Mendez joined the Braves organization in 2008 as the hitting instructor for Danville and remained with the rookie level Braves through 2010. He then took over as the hitting coach in Rome from 2011 to 2012. In 2013, Mendez served as the hitting coach of the Gulf Coast League Braves before returning to Danville in 2014. Mendez’s playing career lasted from 1991 through 2007. Over those 16 seasons, Mendez would play for five different organizations including Kansas City, Detroit, Oakland, Baltimore and Atlanta. He was a career .296 hitter in the minors and a perennial all-star. Mendez reached the big leagues in 2003 with the Baltimore Orioles. He played in 26 games for the O’s over four months and hit .222 with 10 hits and two doubles. He was originally signed by Kansas City as a non-drafted free agent in 1991.
