Die 16-jarige Shaun Handford,van Copperstraat 11, Elandsrand, hetomstreeks 15:00 ‘n ent met sy vriendse motorfiets gery toe hy om die draainaby die Western Deep Levels Goud-myn se Suidskag vermoedelik beheeroor die motorfiets verloor en onder diewiele van ‘n vragmotor beland het. Ledevan Western Deep Levels se mediesepersoneel het noodhulp op hom toege-pas, maar hy was reeds dood.

Sowat 15 gewapende rowers het op‘n waaghalsige wyse ‘n sakeman vanFochville van meer as R150 000 beroof.

For the first time the CarletonvilleSPCA is now also impounding largeranimals.

According to Ms Marlene Howie ofthe Carletonville SPCA, the organisati-on has secured a tender to impoundlarge animals such as cattle towardsthe end of last year.

The first of these ‘new customers’however only arrived at the SPCA’s ken-nels last week.

On April 25 members of the police inFochville contacted the SPCA andasked them to impound some animalsof which the documents were not in or-der. According to law, all owners of cat-

tle, sheep, goats and pigs must,amongst other things, register an iden-tification mark at the office of the regi-strar of animal identification. Farmanimals may also not be transportedwithout the relevant documents.

The confiscated cattle were kept onthe SPCA’s premises overnight and wasonly released to the owner after he paida fine to the police the next morning.

According to Howie, the SPCA had tostep in to assist with larger animals du-ring several instances last week. Inmost of the cases, the animals roamedinto public roads after they were notwatched by herders. In one incident, ataxi rolled on the road to Khutsong af-ter hitting such a stray animal.

“The owners of farm animals mustknow that it is illegal to let them roamaround without someone watchingthem. If such a problem occurs, we willconfiscate the animals and the ownerwill have to pay a fine to receive themagain,” Howie told the Herald.

In the meantime the SPCA invites petowners to bring their pets to the organi-sation to have them microchipped.This service is done at R130 at theSPCA, which is much cheaper than atprivate veterinarians. It is done withina few minutes and such a microchip en-sures that an animal’s owners can easi-ly be traced if it gets lost. All SPCA bran-ches in the country have devices thatcan scan such microchips and if an ani-

mal is found to belong to someone, theowners will be contacted immediately.

In the meantime, the SPCA also re-minds pet owners to contact the SPCAimmediately when their animal is lostas such animals often end up at the or-ganisation’s kennels.

The Carletonville SPCA also asksmembers of the community to assistthem with corrugated iron that will beused to build shelter for the larger im-pounded animals.

A visit described as ‘a visit by policemen’by the little ones of a local day care, waseverything but that.At around midday on Thursday, 25

April, a teacher of a local day care centrein Carletonville noticed a very neatlydressed man enter the premises. Thegardener had been busy outside and leftthe gate open.The man asked for the school princi-

pal, whowas busy at that stage, by nameand said that he wanted to enrol hischild in the school. “I handed over myduties to the teacher, and walked to thegate where the man was walking up anddown rather edgily,” says the principal.“Already then, something did not feelright, because he was not lookingaround as parents who are genuinely in-terested usually do.”Whilst speaking to the man, the prin-

cipal realised that there were anothertwo men in the classrooms, also ner-vously walking around and speaking tothe teachers. Both these men were alsovery nicely dressed.“Come with me,” the man suddenly

said, and forced the principal into thehouse. His accomplices assisted him byforcing the teacherswhowork there intothe house as well. The men were all ar-med and had these women understandclearly that, if they did not co-operate,they would be killed.While the principal and staff were be-

ing kept in the lounge, the children wereleft alone outside. The principal saysthat she was very dissatisfied with this.“One cannot leave children alone andunattended outside,” she explains, “SoI kept sending one of the robbers out togo check on the little ones, and he didso,” she giggles. Eventually the robbergot tired of playing teacher, and thenbrought all the children into the housetoo.She describes the two men who kept

them in the lounge as ‘soft’ but says that

one of themen, theone who enteredthe gate alone, wasrather arrogantand violent. “Heappeared to be the‘leader’ of thegroup she ex-plains.”This is evident

when consideringthat, while theother two men we-re holding the staffand children atgunpoint in thelounge, this mantook the principalto the bedroom,where there isasa-fe. “He started de-manding the safe’skey from me,” shesays. “But I reallyhave no idea whe-re it is kept, myhusband usuallyhas it with him,and hewas not ho-

According to the agreed and ac-cepted Rural Safety Strategy of theSouth African Police Services, as en-dorsed by all levels of government,local municipalities must participa-te and contribute in an effective wayand/or manner towards the impro-vement and/or maintenance of ruralsafety.

3.The Merafong City Local Muni-cipality through the designated offi-ce bearers seems to intentionally ig-nore rural safety as part of their res-ponsibilities. Rural areas and the

safety of these areas seem to be a for-gotten aspect in the daily workingsof theMerafongCity LocalMunicipa-lity.

The Merafong City Local Munici-pality do not have any delays and/orexcuses in accumulating rates andtaxes on the rural communities, butit do not see a way to participate and/or contribute to the safety of theserural communities. Even to attendany monthly Rural Safety Forums isan effort; so no response, no atten-dance and no nothing!

Maybe someone in the MerafongCity Local Municipality has got thebackbone to act and do his job bygetting involved in the rural commu-nities. Let’s see if they will attend thenext Fochville Rural Safety Forumon 21 May 2013... I can almost gua-rantee a vacant seat with no excuse!!

A suspect in themurder of a well knowndrug dealer was arrested recently.M. Leon Goosen (30) of Fochville was

arrested for themurder of amanknownas Prince Okafor on 16 March this year.The Herald reported on this incident,

but due to the sensitivity of the case andinvestigation, not much detail could bepublished.Excellent investigative work byDetec-

tive Warrant Officer Soon Theron, sawto the arrest of a cold-bloodedmurdererwho owned up to his deeds.Okafor was originally found dead be-

hind the steering wheel of his car witha gunshot to the head on the Blyvoorplant road.Fingerprints were collected and poli-

ce found that Okafor’s cell phone wasmissing.

Goosen was ar-rested at hiswork-place on AngloGold Ashanti’sTautona minewith the help ofDetectives Serge-ant Jacques Nageland Warrant Offi-cer Jenni Muller.Goosen was ta-

ken to the policestation for questi-oning, and lateradmitted that hewas the one whomurdered Okafor.He even took poli-ce officers back tohis homewhere hepointed out andhanded over the fi-rearm used to killhis supplier.Goosen aledges

that the motive forthe killing was thefact that he owed

Okafor R 1 200.“Goosen aledges that Okafor had

been threatening to kill him, so theymetto talk things out, but instead Goosenmurdered Okafor,” said Sergeant BusiMenoe, Spokesperson of the Carleton-ville SAPS.According toMenoe, Okafor had been

arrested for drug-related crimes in Me-rafong on several occasions.Goosen appeared in court on 25April

and was denied bail.He is still in police custody and will

Dit hetbaie goed gewerk.In 2011, tydens ’n vergadering tussen die drie skole(Fedsas was ook teenwoordig) het Fochville Laer-skool egter onverwagsmet ’n voorstel gekomdat dietwee laerskolemoet saamsmelt.Daar is egter uitein-delik ooreengekom dat die tyd vir sulke voorstellenog nie ryp is nie en dat ons voortgaan op die wegwaarop onswas. Twee dae laterwas daar ’n vergade-ring tussen die skole en die Onderwysdept. (die ver-gadering met me. Z. Mtembu waarna Fochville Laerverwys het). En raai wat gebeur toe? Me. Mtembuopper presies dieselfde voorstel as wat Fochville La-er twee dae tevore gemaak het! Toeval? Miskien.Die punt is dat daar toe vergeet was van die same-

werkingsooreenkoms – tot só ’n mate dat Losbergse hoof, me. Esterhuizen, tydens die vergaderinguitroep dat haar skool uitverkoop word.Dit is waar die krake begin het. Die Dept. het dit

raakgesien en uitgebuit. Die Dept. het daarvandaanafsonderlikmet elke skool vergader, in kontrasmetdie vorige gesamentlike vergaderings. Dit het vir my

duidelik geraak dat dieselfde boodskap ook nie aan al-mal oorgedra word nie. Die skole is teen mekaar afge-speel – presies waarteen Fedsas gewaarsku het.Daarna het Fochville Laer ’n ooreenkoms met die

Dept. aangegaan ingevolge waarvan hulle ingestem hetom “tydelik” Engelse leerders in te neem. Dit het Los-bergmet geenanderkeuse gelaat as omdieselfde tedoennie. Só het die Dept. twee van die drie skole “gewen’.Intussen is daar gerugte in die dorp versprei (kwaadwil-liglik) dat Losberg heeltemal Engels gaan word. Ek weetvan mense wat oortuig was om hulle kinders solank teskuif “terwyl daar nog plek is”. Ongelukkig het verskeieouers hiervoor geval. Dit het daartoe gelei dat Losberggeen keuse meer gehad het as om parallel medium tegaan nie. Die (oorblywende) ouers het dit waarskynlikook ingesien en tydens ‘n ouervergadering finaal met ’ngroot meerderheid daardie keuse uitgeoefen, eerder asom die hele skool te verloor. Die afgelope week is persvryheid in Suid-Afri-ka weer groot nuus omdat die regering hul ak-sie voortsit om die wetsontewerp op die be-skerming van staatsinligting deur te druk.Hoewel dié wetgewing heelwat aangepas is

sedert dit die eerste keer op die tafel geplaasis, is kan geen poging om diemedia se vryheidom inligting wat in openbare belang is, in teperk, goedgekeur word nie.Die inperking wat deur die beplande wets-

ontwerp beoog word, sal lynreg in teenstellingmet die Grondwet, wat reg tot vryheid van uit-drukking in Artikel 14 uiteensit, wees. Indiendié reg ingeperk kan word, wat ander regtekan dalk volgende wees?Intussen word Wêreld Persvryheidsdag

weer op Vrydag, 3Mei gevier. Dié dag word se-dert 1993 gevier ná dit deur die Verenigde Na-sies ingestel is. Tydens vanjaar se formelefeesviering, wat in Costa Rica gehou sal word,word aandag gevestig opdie veiligheid vanme-diawerkers, die veiligheid van mense wat in-ligting op die internet versprei sowel as aksiesom te keer dat diegene wat mediawerkers sevryheid en veiligheid inperk, skotvry daarvanafkom. Sonder die media en die vryheid ominligting te versprei en te ontvang, sal ons wê-reld heeltemal anders lyk. Sonder ‘n vrye me-dia is ‘n regering daartoe in staat om alle inlig-ting wat na die publiek gaan, aan te pas sooswat hulle dit wil hê. ‘n Voorbeeld hiervan isin ‘n land soos Noord-Korea, waar inwonersdie hele tyd met inligting oor hoe wonderlikhul leiers en land is en hoe vyandig almal an-ders is, gebreinspoel word.Hoewel die kanse darem skraal is dat ons

dalk eendag soos dié land kan opeindig, is ditbelangrik dat alle inwoners bewus is van hoedie inperking van die media se regte hulle reg-streeks kan raak.

The police in Carletonville are warningthe public about stupid scams.“There is no possible way that you

can win the UK Lottery or win a draw,when you have not even entered it,”says Col. Wessel Prinsloo of the Carle-tonville SAPS’s Detectives Branch.Prinsloo says the police have their

hands full with people opening cases oftheft, after willingly paying over moneyto various different, unrealistic scams.Prinsloo describes what will happen

in a typical case.The person will receive a text messa-

ge saying “Congratulations, you havewon a Nokia draw and R 300 000 is yo-urs” or “You have just won the UK Lot-tery of twomillionpounds.”Conditionswill, however, always follow. You willthen be asked to pay in an amount ofR 1 200 or the likes “for administrationcosts” or “postage fees, bank chargesetc.”After this is done, another amount

will be required in order for you to re-ceive yourmoney. Perhaps for “VAT” orwhatever the case might be.“Some people end up paying ridicu-

lous amounts of money over to thesescams, sometimesup toR35000, thin-king that this will secure their ‘win-nings’ says Prinsloo. “They then cometo the police station to seek advice andhelp, andwanting us to get theirmoneyback.”Prinsloo says that peoplemust know

that your money can also not miracu-lously be increased in amount by asangoma.”Prinsloo tells of a man who went so

far as to pay R 250 000 for a penile en-largement by one of the fly-by-night ty-pe ‘doctors’ in town, who are stickingtheir advertisements all over the lamppoles etc. “When the operation was notsuccessful, the man wanted us to gethis money back,” Prinsloo says.He says thatmany of these scams are

actually carriedout from internet café’sacross the world. “These con-artistswill sit in an internet café and send outbulk SMS’s to hundreds of people, ob-viously telling lies and making emptypromises.” In doing so they aremakinga lot ofmoney, preying onunsuspectingvictims who are often desperate for so-me money.“Again I say, if you have not entered,

you cannot win,” Prinsloo tells. “And ifyou win, you should not be obliged topay money for your money.”

Although not seriously injured, twofemale employees were assaulted du-ring a business robbery at Russels onMonday, April 29 at around 08:30.One armedman and five accompli-

ces entered Russels in the morning,just before opening time. They weredressed in overalls and made no at-tempt to disguise themselves.While the five unarmed men helped

themselves to appliances and electro-nic goods, including cell phones and

laptops in the store, the suspect witha firearm forced the employees to a sto-reroom at the back of the shop.Two women were assaulted for not

reacting speedily enough at the de-mand of their perpetrators.After collecting stock of an unknown

amount, the suspects fled the sceneon foot.Anyonewith information regarding

A local resident faces criminal chargesof perjury after telling thepolice blatantlies and opening a false case.A group of men were caught stealing

pipes at an AngloGold Ashanti mine onWednesday, 24 April at around 21:00.They were spotted stealing the pipes

and loading them into a small five tonTata truck.Once they had spotted the men, An-

gloGold security officers, who were pa-trolling called for back-up, but themenfled the scene, leaving both the pipesand the truck behind.

The following morning, 25 April, aman reported to theCarletonville SAPSthat his five ton Tata truck had been hi-jacked on the P111 road (near SibanyeGold’s KDC mine) the previous eve-ning, at around 22:00. He alleged thathe was hijacked by several Basothomen.This was noted by a police officer,

and the man was taken in for questio-ning and interrogation.He eventually admitted to lying and

giving police a false statement. He alsogave the SAPS the names of the othersuspects who were stealing the pipeson the mine. He was immediately arre-

sted for perjury and will be chargedwith theft of mine property as well.“Wewill not tolerate personswho un-

derestimate our intelligence and whotakeus for fools,” saidSgt. BusiMenoe,Spokesperson of the CarletonvilleSAPS.“By giving a false statement youwaste

the time of those conducting the admi-nistrative process and also that of thedetectives who must investigate thesecases.”Menoe says that time is precious to

the police, and that there are seriouscrimes that need attention.“Anyone who opens a bogus case, or

gives a false statementwill be dealt withseverely,” she says.She mentions that many people are

currently opening ‘robbery’ cases forcell phones stolen. “Many insurancecompanies now only cover the loss ofyour cell phone if it was lost in a robbe-ry,” she explains. “Now people who ha-ve been the victims of normal theft, areopening cases of robbery, saying theywere held at gunpoint for their cell pho-nes. Robbery is obviously a way moreserious case than theft and needsmoretime and attention. Nobody shouldmess with the law in this way,” Menoesays.

Die Carletonville Rotariërklub het dieafgelope week ‘n staatmaker in die ge-meenskap vir haar onbaatsugtige diensbedank.

Me. Annatjie Dorfling, die stigter, be-stuurder en enigste professionele ver-pleegsuster van Avondgloor op Carle-tonville het verlede Donderdagaand diegesogte Paul Harris-toekenning virhaar gemeenskapsdiens ontvang.Avondgloor is reeds vir jare die enigstetehuis in die omgewing waar verswaktebejaardes asook ander verswaktessoos kankerpasiënte vir lang tye kanwoon en hulp kan ontvang.

Dorfling het tydens die funksie aandie Rotariërs asook verskeie gaste watdie byeenkoms bygewoon het, verteldat een van die belangrikste oogmerkevan dié sentrum is om verswakte inwo-ners toe te laat om, maak nie saak wathul omstandighede is nie, hul mens-waardigheid te behou.

Paul Harris, na wie die toekenningvernoem is, het Rotary International,die moederliggaam van alle Rotariër-klubs, in 1905 gestig. Die toekenningword net aan uitstaande gemeenskaps-lede oorhandig.

‘n Pret-veiling is ook tydens die ge-leentheid, wat by Fiddler’s Elbow in

Oberholzer aangebied is, gehou omgeld vir Avondgloor in te samel. Alte-saam R13 200 is tydens dié veiling by-mekaargemaak. ‘n Beroep is ook op sa-kelui, wat die aand se verrigtinge byge-woon het, gedoen om Avondgloor tehelp ondersteun sodat ‘n tweede ge-kwalifiseerde mediese suster aangestelkan word om te help om na al die inwo-ners te kyk.

Tydens die loop van die aand het dieRotariërklub ook ‘n sertifikaat aanmnr. Johan van Zyl van Murray & Ro-berts oorhandig om dié maatskappy tebedank vir hul hulp met ‘n projek om‘n kleuterskool by die Nasarenerkerkin Welverdiend te help ontwikkel. Nienet het die maatskappy ‘n nuwe indus-triële houer geskenk om die kleuter-skool te huisves nie, maar het hulle ook‘n verskeidenheid werk aan die houergedoen om dit meer gemaklik vir diekleuterskool te maak. Murray & Ro-berts het hulle ook daartoe verbind omnog werk, soos die insit van kombuis-kaste, aan die houer te doen.

Volgens ‘n lid van die CarletonvilleRotariërklub, me. Marieta Venter, be-plan die organisasie ook reeds om weervanjaar op Vrouedag, 9 Augustus, ‘nvlotdag te hou. Tydens dié dag sal be-sighede die geleentheid kry om hul eievlotte te bou, waarop personeel en on-

dersteuners as deel van ‘n spesiale op-tog deur die dorp se strate sal kan ry.Die geld wat tydens die dag ingesamelword, sal onder meer vir spesiale pak-kies met noodsaaklike benodigdhedewat aan behoeftige skoolkinders uitge-deel word, gebruik word.

Intussen is die Rotariërklub ook met‘n besondere brei-projek besig. Die or-ganisasie het onlangs sewe breimasjie-ne bekom en laat diens. Dit beplan nouom dié masjiene aan sewe behoeftigevroue in die SAVF se Deurgangshuisbeskikbaar te stel.

Die belangstellendes gaan opgeleiword om die masjiene te gebruik en salvan wol voorsien word sodat hulle warekan brei wat weer verkoop kan word.Na elke vrou op dié wyse R800 ingesa-mel het, sal sy die breimasjien waaropsy gewerk het, ontvang sodat sy daar-mee kan voortgaan om vir haarself geldte verdien. Elk van die vroue gaan ook‘n tafel ontvang om hul breimasjien opte laat staan.

Volgens die organiseerder, mnr.Leon van Jaarsveld, sal dié week seoudisies Saterdagaand (4 Mei) plaas-vind.

Sgt Alfred Mothusamang Gao-bonoe (47), passed away suddenlyon Monday. Although the cause ofhis death was not established byprinting time, colleagues said thatit was suspected that he had a he-art-attack or brain aneurism.

Gaobonoe joined the FochvilleSAPS in 1990 as Student Consta-ble andwas a fullmember of SAPSby1995whenhebecameaConsta-ble. At the time of his death, hewasa Sergeant and a familiar face atthe Fochville Court where he wor-ked.

A memorial service was held forGaobonoe at the Africa CatholicChurch in Kokosi at 14:00 onThursday 25 May. His funeral washeld on Saturday, 27 April.

ning water?How can management in air-conditi-

oned offices really expect the labour-force to be happy in certainworkplaceswhen the working conditions are life-threatening and just plain horrid?

Can the various sectors of theDepartment of Health seriouslyexpect great publicity when ourpeople are being serviced by un-der-equipped ambulances andoften nurses and doctors who ha-ve no passion whatsoever?One could continue to name

these things for a lifetime, but thequestion every single one of usshould be asking ourselves is...“Am I part of the cure? Or am Ipart of the disease?”Are you bringing your children

up with proper values and mo-rals? For until that is done, noneof this will ever come to an end.

We cannot expect our mansions tostand when the foundations are unsta-ble and full of cracks.Are you selling life-destroying rub-

bish to people who are going to growup and continue to add to the cracksof this town and this country’s founda-tions? Are you the one letting these sel-lers (and murderers and rapists andabusers and thieves) off way toolightly?Are you seeing the officers doing

whatever they shouldn’t be doing butchoosing to keep quiet about it? Areyou an officer accepting bribes for fa-vours? Do you know of a man who ismolesting or abusing awomanor child,but choose ‘not to get involved?”You see, the disease is “not getting in-

volved.” It is the way of a coward as faras I am concerned, and has become theconvenient way 90 percent of us lookthe other way. And by doing this, we arenothing more than part of the disease.It is about time we wake up and start

The Forum of Community Journalists(FCJ) this week indicated that it isdeeply disappointed with the govern-ment’s decision to push ahead in theirefforts in having the Protection of StateInformation Bill (POSIB), commonlyknown as the Secrecy Bill, signed intolaw.This organisation consists of more

than 500 journalists from among theestimated 500 community newspapers

forgotten that Section 16 of the Consti-tution of the Republic of South Africaenshrines the right to freedom of ex-pression which states “Everyone hasthe right to freedom of expression,

which includes: (a) Freedom of thepress and other media; (b) Freedom toreceive or impart information or ideas;(c) Freedom of artistic creativity; and(d) Academic freedom and freedom ofscientific research,” the FCJ’s currentchairperson, Mr Ben Burger, said thisweek.“As an industry body representing

community and local media journa-lists, we view this Bill not only as a bla-

tant attack on press freedom, but alsoan attack on our fragile democracy. Itis the FCJ’s belief that this Bill is no-thing more than an attempt by govern-ment to silence those who speak outagainst corruption and crime by crimi-nalising whistle-blowers.The FCJ therefore supports any acti-

KruiebroodKrummel 1 koekie (25 g) vars gis in

125ml louwarmwater en voeg5ml sui-ker by; laat sowat 10 minute staan.Meng saam: 625 ml koekmeel, 250 glaevet maaskaas, 30 g gesmelte botter,5 ml gemengde kruie, 30 ml vars pie-tersielie en ander vars kruie, gekapteui na smaak en 1 eier; voeg gismengselby en knie goed deur. Voeg nou nog on-geveer 100 ml meel by soos benodig.Bedek en laat op ’n warm plek rys totdubbel die hoeveelheid.

Stel oond op 200°C. Knie die deeggoed deur met ’n voedselverwerker ofmet die hand en vorm in ’n wors omin ’n broodpan van 25 cm in te pas. Be-dek en laat weer rys. Plaas die pan opdie boonste oondrak en bak sowat 40tot 50 minute.

•Wenke: Indien verkies, plaas ’nbakkie water saam met die pan broodin die oond sodat die brood nie te veeluitdroog nie.

• Vyf minute voordat die baktyd ver-streke is, kan ’n mengsel van bietjieolyfolie en vars- of gedroogde-kruie oorbrood gesmeer word.

VolkoringbroodMeng saam: 200 g bruismeel. 200 g

volkoringmeel, 5 ml bakpoeier en 3 mlsout; voeg 340ml bier by enmengweer.Plaas in bespuite broodpan en bak in

voorverhitte oond van 180°C vir 45-50minute of tot goudbruin en gaar. Keeruit en dien op.

Variasies: Voeg by:· Vars of gedroogde kruie· Parmesaan-kaas en varspietersielie· 12,5 ml bruin suiker, 75 g pitlose

rosyne en 2ml kaneel

Ronde volkoringbrood met sampi-oen

Meng 750 ml volkoringmeel, 125 mlgerolde koring, 100 ml heel koring, 25ml sesamesaad en 5 ml sout saam in’n mengbak. Voeg by: 500 ml joghurt,100 ml louwarm melk waarin 10mlkoeksoda opgelos is, en 12,5 ml heu-ning en meng goed. Skep in gesmeerderonde koekpan en bak in voorverhitteoond teen 180° C vir 1 uur. Keer uitwanneer gaar enhol uit. Vulmet sampi-oene, gebraai in botter met knoffel envars kruie. Strooi gerasperde Parme-saan-kaas bo-oor.

Pumpkin raisin breadSift 400 g flour, 10 ml bicarbonate of

soda, 5 ml salt, 5 ml baking powder,3 ml ground cloves and 5 ml groundcinnamon into a largemixing bowl. Stirin 100 g raisins and 50g chopped nuts.Cream 250 g sugar with 150g butter ina separate bowl and add 4 eggs (one ata time), beating well after each addi-tion. Beat in 500 g cooked pumpkin(drained and mashed); add to flourmixture, mix well to form soft dough(adding a little water if necessary).Spoon into two small greased loaf pansand bake at 180°C about 1 hour to 1hour and 10minutes.

Prune breadCombine 500ml scaldedmilk, 25ml

margarine, 12,5 ml sugar and 5ml saltin a bowl and cool until lukewarm. Sof-ten 25 g fresh yeast in 60 ml lukewarmwater and add to milk mixture. Add 3x 250 ml sifted flour and beat untilsmooth. Stir in 375 ml cooked,chopped prunes. Add more flour tomake a stiff dough; turn onto a flouredsurface or into a food processor andknead for about 5 mi-nutes untilsmooth and elastic. Place dough in twogreased loaf tins, set in a warm placeto rise until double in size. Bake at180°C for about 45 minutes.

Chicken and mushroom gratinCook 1 medium-sized chicken until

tender (reserve the stock); season, re-move all bones and skin and cut intobite-size pieces. Heat 70ml margarinein a saucepan, add 2 sliced leeks andfry one minute. Add 250g each brownand button sliced mushrooms; cookuntil softened. Stir in 70ml flour andgradually add 500ml milk. Add 200mlchicken stock and continue to stir untilthickened. Add chickenmeat and25mldry sherry and stir well. Transfer mix-ture to a greased ovenproof dish. Mix100 - 200ml fresh white breadcrumbs,30ml freshly choppedparsley and grat-

Haelgeweer aan die regter- en visstokaan die linkerhand, geniet Driekus vanZyl(12) sy liefde vir sport in die natuur.

Van Zyl is ‘n graad 6 leerder van LaerGedenkskool Danie Theron en het aandie einde van 2012 by die SAJWV(Suid-Afrikaanse Jagters en Wildsver-eniging) as junior lid, aangesluit.

Op 17 Januarie 2013 het hy reeds ‘nsilwer balkie verdien in die haelgeweer-skiet kransduif afdeling.

Op 27 Maart behaal hy ook ‘n bronsbalkie in die vlakvarkafdeling.

Om in aanmerking te kom vir die bal-kies, moes Driekus op senior vlak deel-neem.

Die gesoute senior lede sal hul sok-kies moet optrek om nie uitgestof teword nie. Oupa Buks Fourie, wat homafrig, se hart swel natuurlik van trots.

Dié talentvolle jongeling se vaardig-hede stop egter nie by jag nie.

Aan die einde van 2011 was Driekusaangewys as klubkampioen van DanieTheron hengelklub. Hy het ook in 2012voortgegaan met hengel op provinsialevlak.

In 2012 verteenwoordig hy SentraalNoordwes by die Suid-Afrikaanse vars-water hengel-kampioenskappe byBloemhofdam as ‘n penkop hengelaar.Hy is huidiglik steeds lid van die Wes-tern Deep Levels hengelklub en ver-teenwoordig ook die klub as juniorhengelaar tydens hul liga-kompetisies.

Hy is ook besig met proewe om weerdie Sentraal-Noordwesspan te verteen-woordig tydens hierdie jaar se Suid-

Afrikaanse varswater hengelkampi-oenskappe.

Sy pa Chrisjan van Zyl, is sy held,maar Driekus se tone krul tog te lekkeras hy sy pa ook met die visvang kan uit-stof.

Hy sal Vrydag uitvindof hy gekies gaan word om die eerste week van die Junie-vakansie tydens die Craven-week in Sasolburg, of by die Bokkieweek in Bela-Bela te speel. Op die foto is hy saammet die afrigter, mnr. Robert Smith en die skoolhoof, me. Elmien Esterhuizen.


Die Fochville-rolbalklubhet op 27 en 28 April huljaarlikse mans-opeklubkompetisie gehou.

Elf lede het ingeskryfvir die kompetisie enhoewel dit baie kompete-rend was, het die mannedit baie geniet.

Die kompetisie was-verdeel in twee afdelingsen die wenners van dietwee afdelings het sakeuitgespook in ‘n finaal.Rudi Oosthuizen het dietitel van mans ope-kam-pioen vir 2013 ingepalm.

The South African Skydiving Champi-onships are taking place right in ourbackyards.

The Johannesburg Skydiving Club(JSC)havebeenhosting at least 75 sky-divers from all-over the country sinceMonday.

The competition is very tight but theeager spirits of the skydivers and thatof the club hosting the tournament iscontageous.

In the four-way open Team Savoco isleading the board and in the Canopy Pi-loting event Chris Teague is man of themoment so far.

The twoway open is just a fun activityfor the skydivers and many are takingadvantage of sailing in the sky withoutcompetition. In the Accuracy item theleader of the pack thus far is Paul ‘Sim-ba’ Marcelin.

The organisers were happy to reportthat there has been no injuries in theevent thus far.

Die manne van Wes Wits is besig om’n boodskap aan hul teenstanders testuur.

Hulle het dit op 20 April teen diespanne van Kagiso bewys deur dié op-ponente lelik te vertrap.

Die tweede span het met die verrig-tinge begin en daar was tonne vuur-werke op die rugbyveld.

Wes Wits se tweedes het verskeiegoeie strukture in hul wedstryd gehaden die manne moes wys of hulle asspan kan saamwerk of nie.

Die tweedes se spelpatroon het gefo-kus op hul aanvalle aangesien hullespoed van hul agterste spelers asookkrag voor het.

Die manne wat gedurende die wed-stryd teen Kagiso uitgestaan het, wasdie lang Eben Moller wat by die lynsta-ne baie moeilikheid veroorsaak het endan ook drie keer oor die doellyn gevalhet. Hennie Rademeyer het ook tot diehoë telling bygedra deur drie drieë tedruk.

Daar was vele ander spelers wat ge-help het om die Kagiso-span onvoor-bereid te laat lyk.

Willie van Niekerk het met sy sterkbene voor gehelp om die enjin aan diegang te sit wanneer dit gekom het byskrums of losgemale. Van Niekerk hetook met ’n drie tot die telling bygedra.

Lubabale Nvupa het ook baie moei-likheid veroorsaak met sy ratse sy-stappe en sterk afstamp-arm.

Nvupa het ook ’n drie gedruk om totdie 94-5 telling teen Kagiso by te dra.

Aan die ander kant van die veld hetdie eerste span geesdriftig opgedrafom net die werk wat die tweedes beginhet klaar te maak.

Die manne het na ’n bietjie gesukkelstadig maar seker hul teenstanders ge-wys dat hierdie hul tuisgronde is.

Nadat die eerstes hul voete gevindhet, het hulle die drieë begin inryg.

Die dinge het veral mooi begin loopna die klub se voorsitter, Lesley Ven-ton, die manne bymekaar geroep heten ’n ernstige woord of twee gespreekhet.

Venton het ook self bygedra tot dieeerstes se pragtelling en so ook PieterPotgieter.

Die besige Willie van Niekerk het virsy tweede wedstryd ook met punte ge-help.

Die bedrywige Wes Wits is besig omaan die gang te kom en dit is beslisgoeie ‘n goeie teken, meen Venton.

Die bestuur is baie gelukkig met dieklub se gees al is die eerstes nie geluk-kig met hul spel nie. Tog weet hullewaar die foute lê.

Die tweede span aan die ander kantwil hul momentum hou.

Die o.20-span het die vorige dag teenSouth Deep-myn ’n vriendskaplikewedstryd gespeel en hulle ook met19-5 verslind.

Wes Wits speel hierdie naweek teenUJ se spanne op Wes Wits se tuisveld.

Wedstryde begin om 13:15.

WesWits verniel KagisoWes Wits se eerste span wat hulle krag gebruik om vorentoe te beweeg teen Kagiso se eerstes.

Wes Wits se Jaco Rademeyer met sy sterk voorpak wat oor Kagiso se bene hardloop. Die eerste span se masiewe voorpak hou niks terug vanjaar nie.
