A church from the area recently rea-ched out to a group of needy elderly pe-ople.Last Sundaymembers of the Apecho

Amohelang Bible Church in Wedela,which is headed by Pastor Freddy vanStaden, reached out to the elderly inWedela. Members of the church visitedthe Isolomzi elderly group in Wedealand assisted them with many goods.Blankets and food parcels were han-ded out to all 53 of the group’s mem-bers while the church goers also enter-tained them to a meal.According to one of the churchmem-

bers, Ms Alice Sethiro, they held thisoutreach in accordance to Matthew 25verse 42 to 43, which reads “For I washungry and you gaveme nothing to eat,

I was thirsty and you gave me nothingto drink, I was a stranger and you didnot invite me in, I needed clothes andyou did not clothe me, I was sick andin prison and you did not look afterme.” The councillor of the area,MrWel-come Mbaba, thanked the group whilea representative for the elders remin-ded all the younger people who atten-ded that they were who they are becau-se of the work done previously by thosewho are now old. They are also the pil-lars of wisdom to the younger generati-ons. According to Sethiro, the churchhad previously reached out to needypeople in Wedela Extension 3 and Sko-pas. On Heritage Day churchmembersalso cooked for the elderly as well aschildren from an orphanage. “It is inour hearts to take care of the needy andreach out to them,” Sethiro says.

A man was killed and six otherswere injured on the R500 be-tween Carletonville and Potchef-stroom on Sunday afternoon,July 13.

Paramedics from ER24 at-tended to a collision at the inter-section of the R500 and R53where they found one vehicle go-ing up in flames and anotherstanding several meters awayfrom it. “Bystanders pointed outthat the driver in the vehicle wasstill trapped in the burning car,”

said Werner Vermaak of ER24in a press release just after theaccident. “Unfortunately para-medics could not get close to thevehicle to rapidly extricate theman from the burning car.”

Vermaak said that after theflames were extinguished, theyfound the man dead in the vehi-cle. At this stage it is unclear ifhe died upon collision or as a re-sult of the fire.

“Six people from the other ve-hicle were treated for various in-

juries on the scene. The occu-pants of the vehicle, rangingfrom six to forty years old, weretransported to PotchefstroomProvincial Hospital and Medi-clinic Potchefstroom respective-ly,” Vermaak told. It is under-stood that one of the vehicles ap-parently skipped a stop sign atthe intersection. The exactcause of the incident is not yetknown and the case was handedover to the local authorities forfurther investigation.

A domestic dispute ended horri-bly on Tuesday morning.

On Monday afternoon, ayoung woman of Greenspark,Ms Gwendoline Adams and herboyfriend, Nigel De Besh wereengaged in an argument.

According to a reliable sourcewho wishes to remain anony-mous, De Besh had chased Ad-ams back home, to her mother,not too long ago.

“They lived together in GooseStreet first,” the source said,“and have a five year-old daugh-ter together.”

According to the source, DeBesh sometimes became violent

when he drank, and would beatAdams. His anger reached apeak on Monday afternoon ataround 12:00.

“The man went to look for Ad-ams at her home where the ar-gument between the two en-sued,” explained Captain DavidMaponya, Acting Station Com-mander of the Fochville SAPS.“He then lost his temper andstarted stabbing Adams.”

The 29-year-old woman wasstabbed in her neck, chest andback seven times and was criti-cally injured.

De Besh ran away after injur-ing the mother of his child. By-standers called for medical as-sistance and Adams was imme-

diately taken to the Chris HaniBaragwanath Hospital whereshe was still, by printing time, incritical condition.

De Besh must have realisedthat the police were searchingfor him and was going to arresthim for attempted murder.

On Tuesday morning, he senthis sister, who lived with himaway from the house to dosomething. Upon returning shefound De Besh hanging in hisbedroom.

He had taken his own life.The Police in Fochville are

currently still investigating anattempted murder case andhave also opened an inquestdocket.

He has nothing left but the clothes onhis back and still has many winternights to face, but Freddy Manko isstill better off than his mother, Ms An-gelina Ntombie Manko (50) who diedin the flames.

Although the actual cause of the fireat their shack in Kokosi’s ‘Section 99’had not been established by the timethe Herald went to print, there werestrong suspicions that a candle seteverything alight.

At around 08:00 on Monday morn-ing, neighbours realised that Manko’sshack, where she lived with her son,was covered in smoke and flames.”My mom was very ill,” Freddy tells.“She had tuberculosis.”

It is uncertain whether Angelinadied due to smoke inhalation first ordue to severe burns as the post mor-tem results had not yet been releasedby printing time.

Fortunately Freddy was at work inGreenspark at the time that the firestarted. When he got home, he had todeal with everything that was unfold-ing, the worst being the loss of hismother.

“This is all I have left,” he says, andpulls on his sweater and blue overallpants.

Freddy will live with his sister, Eliz-abeth, who lives down the road, in theinterim.

“I will find my way from there,” saysthe distraught young man.

When asked whether anyone hashelped out, Freddy says that membersof the ANC, DA and EFF have all visit-ed him.

“Nobody has given us anythingthough. They just all promised that theywould return.” At the same time, Freddysays that he has no money to bury hismother.

“Funerals are expensive and I do notknow what to do.”

He says that his mother’s name hadbeen on a list for a RDP house for years.“If the municipality’s housing depart-ment had built and distributed RDP

houses as they have been promising foryears, my mother may still have beenalive.”

Due to the fact that she lived in ashack, however, Angelina had no elec-tricity or sanitation. It is thus commonpractice for people living in these condi-tions to use open flame, lighting candlesand gas or paraffin to do just about any-thing which requires heat, be it boilingwater in order to bath, lighting a stove

to cook or a candle to lighten the dark.Anyone who would like to assist this

Nobody was fatally injured thoughand the cause of the fire is also un-known.

who always think they know best.They have an opinion about every-thing. They are perfectionists whohave all the solutions to life’s prob-lems.Faultfinders always highlight the

mistakes of other people, but never ac-knowledge their own. Being judgmen-tal, opinionated and critical are three

sure ways to see relationships dis-solve.Make a choice to see what is right

in others, to see the positive, and thegood that they cando. Remember thethings that may beright for me, maynot necessarily beright for you, andvice versa.This does not

make us enemies,neither does itmean that one iswrong and the oth-er is right. It justmeans we chooseto do things differ-ently.We just need to

Members of the Carletonville Policerecently recovered a shotgun in thehome of an alleged zama-zama.

On Wednesday afternoon, mem-bers of the cluster’s task team aswell as one detective, received in-formation about the shotgun.

They drove to Matariana Villagein Blyvooruitzicht where they visit-ed shack N17. The police officerssearched the entire shack andfound more than what they werelooking for.

A shotgun, loaded with three liverounds was found, as well as asound system which was stolenduring a previous house robbery inBlyvoor’s village.

Unfortunately no one was homewhen the SAPS searched the placeand no arrests were made. Investi-gations will, however, continue.

Problems with rubbish removal vehiclesled to many residents not having theirrubbish removed recently.

Many residents of Carletonville, suchas from Extension 9, complained duringthe past week that their rubbish was notbeing removed.

The Herald reported in its issue ofJune 12 that many Merafong residentsare so upset about the fact that theirrefuse is not being removed from theirhouses that they are considering with-holding the money that they pay forthese services. “The problem is like anold gramophone getting stuck and play-ing the same tune over and over,” said

one of those who were furious over theproblems, Mrs. Antoinette Schoombie,who stays in Agnew Road in Carleton-ville.

Although the Herald sent questions tothe Merafong City Local Municipalityabout the problems, they did not replyat the time. During the past week resi-dents from various parts of the Mera-fong City Local Municipal area againcomplained that nothing was being doneto remove their rubbish.

In some areas, such as Fochville, therubbish had not been removed for atleast two weeks and an increasingnumber of people from the area indicat-ed that they are starting to considerwithholding service fees for refuse re-

moval from the municipality.Social media was also overflowing

with people complaining about theproblem.

In the meantime, the Herald heardthat many of the refuse removal truckswere parked at a business in StationStreet in Carletonville to be repaired.

Although the municipality had startedto remove the rubbish in some areasagain by the past weekend, questionsabout the matter were asked to the mu-nicipality.

“The unit has been experiencing chal-lenges with regards to fleet from the 26of June 2014 to date, due to break-downs, resulting in service delivery dis-ruptions,” a municipal spokesperson

indicated. “In instances where service isnot rendered on a scheduled day, com-munities are encouraged to put out theirbins on the next day. Community mem-bersarehoweveradvisednot to leave thebins overnight on sidewalks and alongthe streets, to guard against criminal el-ements. Management is trying to find asolution to the problems encounteredand it is trusted that the waste collectionservicedeliverywill benormalisedsoon.

The repair facility for municipal vehi-cles is in Railway Street, namely Bar-nard Transport.

The unit has a total number of 12refuse compactors, but due to the highvolumes of breakdowns experienced,we only have four (4) compactors servic-ing the whole Merafong Area currently.

The management is prioritising thismatter to ultimately resolve the chal-lenges experienced in the daily wastecollection schedule. Waste collectionservices may be rendered during unusu-al hours/ times so as to make up forwaste collection backlogs.

The community will be informed wellin advance of the schedule to catch upon the backlogs in waste service deliv-ery,” the spokesperson said.

lid van die Merafong City Plaaslike Mu-nisipaliteit, het daar teen die einde vanJunie reedsmeeras20ongelukkebydiedeel van die R500-pad wat gesluit is,voorgekom. Die meeste ongelukke ont-staan omdat die deel van die padwat ge-sluit is, steeds nie duidelik gemerk isnie. Hoewel die Gautengse Paaie-depar-tement al sowat tweemaande gelede be-lowe het dat hulle duideliker tekens bydie deel van die pad wat gesluit is souaanbring, het dié belofte steeds nie gere-aliseernie.Diepadsalnogvir ‘n geruimetyd gesluit moet wees omdat geoloë be-vind het dat grond langs die huidigesinkgat steeds verder kan inval en datdit om dié rede nie koste-doeltreffend isom dit gat nou te vul nie.“Die inwoners in die gebied se groot-

ste probleem is egter die stof. Daar is sobaie stof dat, hoewel die natspuit vandiegrondpad waarop voertuie nou moet ry

help, dit nie al die stof kanwegneemnie.Die pad word ook stukkend gery deurdie groter getal voertuie,” sê Rossouw.Een van die pype wat onder deur die

van in die gebied betaal, kry ons abso-luut geen dienslewering van die munisi-paliteit nie. Ons kry ons elektrisiteit vanEskom en almal het hul eie rioolstelselsen boorgate vir water. Indien ‘n mens ie-mand by die munisipaliteit vir hulp vra,het hulle die houding dat dit nie hulleprobleem is nie,” het Rossouw vies aandie Herald vertel. Volgens haar het dieGautengse Paaie-departement wel aan-geduidathulle aandieprobleemaandagsal gee. Die spoed waarteen dié departe-mentdieproblemehanteer, is egterheel-temal te stadig vir inwoners. Teen druk-tyd was geen nuwe inligting oor die pro-bleem beskikbaar nie.

A woman from Kokosi is showing thatpeople from townships do not have tostand back for anyone.The often-used saying “dynamite

comes in small packages”, could wellhave been invented to describe Dr Ke-bone Magaret Mhlongo.This enthusiastic woman, who al-

ways seem to be bubbling with energy,spoke to the Herald about what shewas up to during the past week.Mhlongo, who grewup inKokosi and

also went to school in this township,has been an achiever for many years.Her passion for sport has also openedup many doors, and continues to doso. She went to a teaching college inKimberley in 1989 and ended up beingits Sports Woman of the Year for threeconsecutive years. At the same timeshe was also the first black woman tocomplete a Trimgim aerobics trainingqualification.After completing her teaching quali-

fication, she taught at Kokosi PrimarySchool and also made news when sheintroduced cricket to the township’schildren in 1992, a timewhen no blackchildren were playing the sport. Shestill has a newspaper clipping showingher mixed-race team. This action ledCricket South Africa (CSA) to noticeher, and she received a bursary fromthem to study Sports Management thefollowing year.During her first year at university,

Mhlongo was included in the nationalaerobics team that representedSouth Africa at the World Aero-bics Championship in SanFrancisco in the USA.Whilestudying for her degree,she also completed a per-sonal trainer course withdistinction. Other extramural qualifications in-clude a national certificate inoccupational directed educa-tion, training and develop-ment practises. She is al-so a registered assessor,facilitator and modera-tor and currentlydoes consultativework for manycompanies andinstitutions.Many parents,for instance, willknow her be-cause she con-ducted holidaysports pro-grammes forchildren in thearea for someyears.Mhlongo’s

thirst for aca-demic knowl-edge in her fieldof interest also

She foundthat many women between the ages of30 to 35 years olddropout of sport andare also not well-represented in thehigh ranks of many sports. Women al-so have no chance to endupasnationalcoaches in sports such as soccer,cricket or rugby. This leads to manyyounger women also losing interest insport in general.“According to my findings I came to

the conclusion that I had to develop anew sport that would be able to pro-mote and uplift women,” Mhlongosays.As part of her Doctorate, Mhlongo

invented a completely new sport,called ‘Wocker.’“It is different from other sports be-

cause it originates in South Africa andalso is the first sport with an educa-tional significance,” Mhlongo says andexplained that the new sport, whichwas designed to be played just by girls,also teaches them Maths and Sciencein the process. As a result of her re-search, Mhlongo designed the field,clothes, rules, score sheet, equipmentand legal issues of the new sport andhas also written two books dealingwith the sport. She is also, through UJand the University of the Witswa-tersrand (Wits) busy to gain furtherrecognition for the sport. She aims to

have the sport recognised bySASCOC, the Common-wealth and Olympic Games’Committee.

Mhlongo is also start-ing to draw interest fromother places. She will, forinstance, soon be on a tel-evision programme onthe Multichoice Channel404. Although the date of thebroadcast is not yetknown, it will be with-in the next fewweeks and will befrom 09:00 to10:00 in themorning.“My aim is

to have thesport official-ly recognisedas anothersport that on-ly girls andwomen canplay, togetherwith netball,”she told theHerald.Judged fromher energy andenthusiasm, Mh-longo will notstop before she

achieves this goal.

en maak klein snytjies in die vleis; vul

elke snytjie met ’n stukkie spekvleis en’n halwe knoffelhuisie. Marineer vir 1– 2 dae. Draai gereeld om en hou in dieyskas.Marinade: Meng saam en giet oor

boud: 500-750ml rooi wyn, 125mlbruinasyn, 250ml olyfolie, gekaptevars roosmaryn, 6-8 peperkorrels, lou-rierblare, 6 heel naeltjies en ’n heel ka-neelstokkie.Verwyder uit die marinade en plaas

in ’n oondpan. Plaas spekvleisrepe opwildsboud; steek vas met peuselstok-kies en verf met ‘n mengsel van ap-pelkooskonfyt en Worcestersous.Meng 250ml van die marinade met250ml room en 125ml rosyne/sulta-nas en gooi in die pan by die vleis.Bedek met ’n deksel/foelie en maakgaar vir ongeveer 2 uur lank by160°C. Voeg res van diemarinade byindien die vleis begin droogkook.Verbruin onder rooster net voor op-diening en verdik pansouse indiennodig.

Fyn vleis met murgbeneDaar bly baie bene met vleis oor

nadat die vleis afgesny is van ’n ge-slagte wildsbok vir biltong en maal-vleis. Plaas van hierdie bene in ’nstoompot saammet gekapte uie, fynknoffel, blokkie vleisaftreksel,500ml wyn/water, asyn, kruie, souten peper. Stoom vir ongeveer 1 uur- verwyder die klein beentjies maarbehou die murgbene. Pas die geuraan vandie fyn vleis; plaas inopdien-skottel en rangskik die murgbene

bo-op. Bedien met heel gekookte aar-tappels en kweperjellie.Pangebraaide rugbiltongBiltong: 40kg wild-rugstring, in bil-

tonge gesny.Biltongmengsel: 1kg growwe sout,

geroosterde koljander, na smaak,125ml bruinsuiker, 50ml swartpeper,fyn naeltjies, na smaak, 500ml bruin-asyn.Pak die biltonge in lae in ’n nie-me-

taalagtige skottel. Besprinkel vleis metbiltongmengsel en laat lê vir 48 uur;draai om na 24uur. Hang biltonge op

om droog te wordmaar hou ’n paarstukke eenkantom te panbraai.

Sny elke stuk in vlinders van ongeveer2 cm dik en braai in gesmelte botter totbruin aan albei kante. Moenie oorgaarmaak nie. Voeg ’n bietjie rooi wyn bydie pansouse en laat afkook tot ’n lek-ker sous. Geur met ’n bietjie vars tie-mie; giet oor vleis en sit voormet warmaartappelslaai.

Gemsbokfilet met netvetMarineer 1,5kg wild filet oornag/12

uur.Marinade:Meng saamsojasous, olyf-

olie, suurlemoensap en fyngekapteknoffel - alles na smaak. Draai gereeldom. Vryf vleis in met growwe sout enswartpeper. Draai filet toemet netvet ofspekvleis. (Indien netvet gebruik word,weekdit vooraf in louwarmasynwater).Steek vas met stokkies en rooster vir20 minute oor matige kole. Verwyderdie stokkies en sny in skywe en sit voormet groenpeperkorrel sous.

op pakkie; dreineer en sprei uit op ’nteedoek omdroog te word. Ethiopian church-goers went to gre-at lengths to bring some relief toKhutsong’s needy this winter.They did not take on this project

alone however.

Members of the Khutsong SAPS hel-ped gather information and amountsof people who were in need, and toge-ther these two parties offered the bestpossible help to the needy that they we-re able to. “Home based care centreswere visited by the SAPS to determine

what the needs of the people are,” saidConstable Ntombizonke Dyosini,Spokesperson of the Khutsong SAPS.Elderly people in need, as well as

children with needs were identifiedand helped. In no time, giving heartsand hands handed over parcels to the-se people. “The parcels contained gro-ceries, blankets and winter sheets,”

said Dyosini. The co-ordinating ofthe project from teh SAPS’s side wasdone byWarrant Officer Eddie Bobo-ko and Dyosini.“One of the bishops at the church

said that this is a project these chur-ches are trying to run in every townand city all over South Africa,” Dyos-ini told.

vest Time Church in Ennerdale recent-ly led a group of trainers who trainedresidents of Greenspark in a variety ofskills recently.According to September, he was ap-

proached by the former Gauteng Pre-mier, Nomvula Mokonyane, after vio-lence broke out in Greenspark abouta month ago. As September had previ-ously done similar upliftment work inEldorado Park, he and his team feltthat they had the skills to help peoplein Greenspark.There is also a branch of the Harvest

TimeChurch operating inGreenspark.Although the church previously hadland designated to it, this was later oc-cupied by squatters and has now for-med part of the land used for low-costhousing.Although the church was forced to

move to the Greenspark clinic, and isnow operating from a tent after the cli-nic had been destroyed during the re-cent unrest, it still wants to help resi-dents.From 1 to 12 July about 85 Green-

spark residents, most of them women,were trained by September and his col-leagues. Since those who attended ran-ged fromhigh school learners to peoplein their late forties, they were equippedwith a variety of skills.The youngsters were not only taught

various life skills, which includedskills on how to deal with drugs, but15 of them were also taken on a camp

at Ennerdale during the past week.“Many of them had never been out of

Members of the Chammers Choir in Khutsonguse the experience they gained by being part ofthis choir to perform even better.This choir recently made news after their male

ensemble walked off as winners of their categoryin a big competition organised by the MerafongCity Local Municipality’s Arts and Culture De-partment.According to one of the members of the choir,

Paulus Tshem (22), the choir started in 2005when a group of talented young people started tosing together. These youngsters, several of whomwere in Tswasongu Secondary School, startedmeeting at the Maranata Church in Khutsong toshare their love of singing. The youngsters camefromdifferent backgrounds,with somebeing soc-cer players and some, like Tshem, being involvedin gangsterism.The only thing thatmattered, however, was that

those whowanted to join the choir needed to havegood voices. “I was once a gangster myself and Isaw life very differently. These guys got me in Gr10 while I was busy singing in the class,” saysTshem, and adds that the choir has since changedhis life. Although the choir originally struggled toimprove themselves, they gained much assistan-ce when their paths crossed with that of ThaboMokuke, a music teacher from Randfontein whostays inKhutsong.Mokuke started teaching someof the choir members how to read music and en-sured that they kept on learning new skills.Although they had a slow start at the competiti-

(South African Schools Athletics) National Cham-pionships, which was held in Port Elizabeth fromJune 20 - 22.He qualified for this event after coming first in

the 400mduring the Provincial Athletics Champi-onships. Atlegang was also part of the Gauteng400 m relay team.He walked off with a silver medal at the nation-

als after he completed in the 400 m in a time of52:03 and was also chosen for the national teamthat will compete in the United States in August.As he is currently in matric and needs to study,

Atlegang however decided not to go to the USA.According to Atlegang, he loves sports and also

takes part in rugby, cricket and soccer. He wasthe fourth fastest runner over the 400m distancein his age category during the past year.He plans to further his studies at North West

Girls soccer teams from the area sho-wed that they are a force to be reckonedwith during a big competition that wasplayed recently.According to the development officer

of the Merafong City Local Football As-sociation, Hloni Kharejane, four teamsfrom the area took part in the WestRand Women’s Festival that took placeon 5 July. The event was held at theGreenhills Stadium in Randfontein.An under-13 A and B team and u/15

teamaswell as a senior teamcompetedin the event. The senior and u/15 teams

were made up of female players fromBlyvooruitzicht, Khutsong’s All Nationteam and the Wedela Celtic team.The u/13 players were drawn from

the teams of Rooipoort Farm School,which is situated just outside Carleton-ville on the road towardsMagaliesburg.The senior team walked off as win-

ners of their competition after winningall three their matches. They beat op-ponents from Randfontein 3 - 0, fromWestonaria 5 – 1, and fromMogale City1 - 0.Theu/15 teamended third in theircategory after drawing 0 - 0 withWesto-naria and losing against Randfonteinand Mogale City with respective scores

of 0 - 5 and 0 - 7. The u/13 A team wasalso third in their competition. Thisteam beat Westonaria 1 - 0 and drew0 - 0 against Randfontein. Their matchagainst Mogale City also ended in a 2- 2 draw.According to Kharejane, some Mera-

fong players qualified for regional te-ams. Although the names of theseachievers who had made it to these te-ams were not yet known at the time thenewspaper going to print, it is known

that the provincial competition will ta-ke place in Pretoria on 19 August.In the meantime, players are gearing

up for the u/13 Build-It competition.Although the Merafong City Local Foot-ball Association would also like to havea women’s league going, there is unfor-tunately only three active women’s te-ams in Merafong.Teams who would like to also get in-

Eachteam member ran 6.7km, with each10-member team covering a total of67km, in celebration of the 67 yearsMadiba worked to make the world abetter place. Kaya FM aimed to have670 teams running, with a total of 6700 runners on the field. Thousands ofathletes took part in the event.This event is a direct link towards en-

couraging all citizens of not only SouthAfrica but the entire world to periodi-cally heed Mandela’s request to spend-ing 67minutes doing good for humani-ty. Sibanye Gold came to the contestguns blazing, bringing out heavy am-munition in the likes of multiple SouthAfrican Track and road running superstar Coolboy “Swift” Ngamole, David“Mr Swift”Ngakane, JP Morgan Inter-
