Definition and Purpose of this Pathway Handbook

A Career & Technical Education (CTE) pathway is a sequence of two or more CTE courses

within a student’s area of career interest. Pathways are designed to connect high school

classes to college, industry certifications, and/or a career.

This book is to assist students in choosing courses for their Individual Plan of Study (IPS).

The IPS is a plan to help students choose a path to graduation that is individualized by

student. This is a four-year plan for high school that is driven by the data from the Career

Cruising career interest surveys.

The handbook includes a description of all of our CTE pathways and the courses in the

pathway taught at IHS. Following this section are the SUGGESTED courses for each

pathway. Teachers, administrators, and counselor have worked on these course

recommendations and we strongly encourage students to follow the suggestions in each

pathway.

Beginning the 2018-19 school year, ALL students are required to be in ONE CTE course

per year. Students can take more CTE courses, but ONE is required.

Kansas CTE Terminology

KANSAS CAREER FIELD(S): Occupations that are organized around broad, common

knowledge and skills. They are recognized as Media & Technology; Business; Agriculture;

Design, Production, & Repair; Health; Public Services; and Family & Consumer Sciences.

KANSAS CAREER PATHWAY(S): Organized groupings of rigorous academic and career

related courses leading from education to employment, that identify each step, skill,

educational requirement and aptitude needed to be successful within any specific career.

Currently there are 35 state-approved pathways identified within the 16 clusters.

KANSAS CTE SCHOLAR: A Kansas initiative to recognize well-rounded, outstanding career

and technical education (CTE) students finishing their senior year of high school. To be a

CTE scholar a student must complete courses in the same pathway all four years of high

school.

Regional Rural Technical Center (RRTC)

The RRTC is located in LaHarpe, KS. This vocational technical center

combines the school districts of Iola, Humboldt, Uniontown, Marmaton

Valley, and Crest. Iola High School students can choose between the

following programs at the RRTC:

Construction Trades (Offered through Fort Scott Community College)

Welding (Offered through Neosho Community College)

Wind Turbine (Offered through Cloud Community College)

These programs are three hours a day and students are bussed to and from

the RRTC. Students taking these courses do receive dual credit through the

community college, which is paid for by the Iola School District.

Note:

Juniors taking the program have the option to receive an embedded math credit.

Seniors taking the program have the option to receive an embedded English credit.

*See the Program of Studies for more information about the RRTC course offerings.

Project Management

This course is an application level course in SEVEN of Iola High School’s pathways.

This course uses projects as the learning method, and using projects to learn builds the skills students need for

success in learning, work and civic life in the 21st century. It consists of the application of proven project

management principles and practices to educational practice based upon the knowledge and expertise

accumulated by the Project Management Institute Educational Foundation.

The essential skills this course teachers include the following: Recognize different resource types (Work, Material, Cost, Budget,

Personnel/Skills, Generic, etc)

Understand the concept of scope and demonstrate in context of

assessing the size of a project

Develop plans for project management and resource scheduling

Identify key personnel and responsibilities for project

Develop SWOT analysis

Analyze workload of tasks and projects

Determine required personnel groups and management hierarchy

Determine resources necessary for project completion

Determine essential tasks necessary for project completion

Design potential timelines for assignments

Explore appropriate technologies for project management and resource

scheduling

Create and present a project management and resource scheduling plan

Create Gantt charts

Evaluate and assign resources to tasks

Implement project management skills to design and complete a collaborative project

Learn various survey strategies to track project progress

Develop strategies for monitoring interconnected assignments

Survey strategies for critical path scheduling

Create strategies to manage project budgets

Build survey analysis for customer satisfaction

In order to learn these skills, students will take part in specific projects. These projects are largely self-directed and

independent, but elements of each type of project will be incorporated into other forms of course work.

Examples of these projects include, but are not limited to, the following (using the scope of the blended English III

class): Independent Reading Projects

Literary Analysis

Argumentative Writing

Research Project

Special Topics in Literature

Industry Recognized Credentials

Any industry recognized credential earned by an Iola High School student counts toward the

students post-secondary success. (KESA goal) This would meet the requirements and increase

our effective rate as required by the state before the student even leaves IHS.

Examples of this would include:

Certifications at RRTC in Welding or Construction (NCCER; Welding Level 1, 2, etc)

CNA/CMA

Any other approved pathway recognized credential
