Setting the Pace or Technology Leadership
Freescale began designing and manuacturing automotive semiconductors in the 1950s,
when semiconductors were irst designed into cars. Since then, we have partnered with
nearly every automaker and tier one supplier in the world. We maintain design centers
and development labs worldwide so we can respond quickly to market needs with cost-
eective solutions.
We are also a leader in driving automotive standards that are designed to beneit the entire
industry by reducing the cost and complexity o vehicle development. Freescale is actively
developing market-ready solutions or:
Powertrain control and hybrid technologies to improve fuel efficiency and lower emissions
Advanced safety and chassis applications to reduce and even prevent accidents
Body electronics and driver information systems to improve the driving experience
Transitions Ahead
Whether it is a methodology or electronics design (such as AUTOSAR or FlexRay
protocols) or a new approach to system design (such as distributed or centralized
architectures) Freescale is actively working with automakers and their suppliers to improve
vehicle electronics technology.
Future generations o vehicles will require increased on-board computing power, more
eicient analog components and smart actuators, deterministic, multiplexed networking
throughout the vehicle and environment and behavior sensors or a saer, cleaner and more
comortable ride. Automotive electronic systems built on innovative, zero-deect Freescale
semiconductor technology will enable this vision, and we are continually investing in new
designs that will help our partners redeine the vehicle.

Automotive Quality
Automotive Quality
Quality Standards Certiications
Freescale has a long history o quality systemmprovement and, as a result, system certiications are
ital to our business. Were proud o our certiications,
developed by the International Organization or
Standardization (ISO), whose standards contribute to
mproving the development, manuacturing and supply
o products and services worldwide. By adopting and
adhering to these standards, we raise the levels o
quality, saety, reliability, eiciency and adaptability
n our products. Freescales manuacturing operations
and automotive design and business units are certiied
o ISO/TS 16949.
ntegrating Reliability into New Technology
Freescale uses a phased process to manage new
echnology introduction. Technical and business
goals are assessed beore moving to a new phase
n development. These phase gates also include
peciic and detailed reliability criteria. The reliability
sks or technology implementation are reduced ashe technology progresses through the development
cycle. Thus, the reliability risks or a new product
can be assessed rom the maturity o the underlying
echnologies. These are real measurements o risk
characterized throughout the development cycle and
applied to speciic product applications.
Perormance or the Long Term
Reliability is the probability that a product (e.g.,semiconductor devices) will perorm its speciied
unction in a given environment or a speciied
period o time. We must not only be concerned
about quality as our products leave our doors, but
also be concerned about product reliability as our
products are used in speciic environments over
time. Semiconductor ailure rate is known to ollow a
bathtub curve with an initially decreasing ailure rate
ollowed by a long, low-level ailure rate and eventual
wear out. We perorm stresses to characterize each
part o this curve. Test and burn-in are used to screen
inant mortality (or early product ailures), and thus,
reduce the early ailure rate. Extended lie tests are
perormed to veriy the intrinsic limits o devices that
result in wear out.
Because the ailure rate o semiconductor devices is
inherently low, the industry uses accelerated testing to
assess semiconductor reliability. During accelerated
tests (such as those described in AEC-Q100 and AEC-
Q101an Automotive Electronic Council standards
publication) elevated stress conditions (voltage,
temperature, humidity, current) are used to produce, in
a shorter period o time, the same ailure mechanisms
as would be observed under normal use conditions.
The objective is to identiy ailure mechanisms and
-

eliminate them as a cause o ailure during the useul
lietime o a product.
Freescale product reliability rests on a strong
oundation o proven validation principles. Our eorts
prior to qualiicationincluding designing, modeling,
testing and test vehicle investigationsdrive low-risk
manuacturing processes. We use industry standard
testing to ensure our customers have reliable products
appropriate or their speciic application.
Typical Freescale accelerated stress tests perormed
during product qualiication are based on AEC-
Q100 and AEC-Q101 conditions and reer to JEDEC
stress descriptions. In addition, we perorm tests and
stresses beyond industry standards to drive our
zero deects goal.
Product Analysis Labs Capabilities
Zero Deects. Thats Freescales goal. But Zero
Deects is a journey, and the Product Analysis Labs
provide the navigation to that inal destination. These
same labs also help Freescale develop cutting-edge
products with continually improving quality to exce
your needs and those o your customers.
The Product Analysis Labs utilize industry standard
techniques and internally developed tools, enabling
Freescale to locate sub-micron sized deects amon
hundreds o millions o transistors on a silicon IC.
This process is critical to providing the necessary
inormation or Freescale to improve its products.
Our Product Analysis proessionals throughout the
world are dedicated to helping Freescale ind the ro
cause o any potential product deect. Our goal is
an accurate understanding o the deect, regardles
o the cause, to enable rapid corrective action and
problem resolution.
Continuous Improvement
Continuous improvement is part o what we do
every day at Freescale. Be it a large project with va
amounts o detailed data analysis or an employee
realizing that their particular production tool is not
running as it should, continuous improvement is pa
o our culture and everyones responsibility.

Hybrid Drive Train
A hybrid vehicle combines an internal-combustion engine (ICE) and a battery-
powered electric motor (E-motor) to power
the drivetrain, improving uel economy and
reducing harmul emissions. In addition to the
internal combustion engine control unit, other
modules are required to control the electric
traction motor motor, recharge the battery and
manage the energy used to run the auxiliaries,
such as the start/stop system and uel and
water pumps.
Freescales MCU portolio includes a number oelectric motor control solutions with an available
low-level sotware library. We are continually
developing new products with dedicated
peripheral sets or the electric architectures used
in hybrid vehicles. For example, our intelligent
distributed control (IDC) device integrates the
industry-leading 16-bit S12 MCU with analog,
mixed signal and networking physical interaces
to provide a reliable and cost-eective system-
in-package (SiP) solution or battery monitoring.

Airbag Systems
The central component o an airbag systemis a control unit that combines a 16- or 32-bit
QorivvaMCU with a set o local acceleration
sensors. Depending on the complexity o
the system, additional satellite sensors
provide supplementary crash inormation
via standardized sensor buses, such as
Peripheral Sensor Interace 5 (PSI5) and
Distributed System Interace (DSI). Processed
sensor inputs are used to ire ront, side and
curtain airbags with specialized multi-channel
squib driver circuits. Xtrinsic sensing solutions
have intuitive signal processing including ault
and overload diagnostic system alerts to help
make decisions about airbag deployment.
As an additional saety actor, highly eicient
switched-mode power supply components
allow the system to keep operating or several
hundred milliseconds i the battery connection

HVAC
Heating, ventilation and air conditioning(HVAC) systems require several electric
motors or blowers and laps, and the motor
control is based on a variety o sensor
inputs. Newer systems use ewer sensors
and model the vehicle interior, requiring the
higher computing perormance o Freescales
broad MCU portolio. H-bridge drivers with
PWM, low quiescent current, overcurrent and
overtemperature protection, and load current
eedback control motors more eiciently.
Distributed systems incorporate smartactuators where networked mixed-mode
control devices are directly mounted on the
actuator. Based on Freescales 16-bit S12
MCU platorm, a distributed system can help
reduce the ECU developers design eort.
The intelligent distributed control (IDC)
products combine an MCU with SBC
unctionality, drivers and physical network
interaces (LIN and/or CAN) into a single
package, providing a smaller, more robust
and cost-eective system solution.

AUTOSAR
What is AUTOSAR?AUTOSAR sotware addresses the challenge
o rising code complexity by providing an
open automotive sotware architecture, jointly
developed by automobile makers, suppliers
and tool developers. AUTOSAR supports the
development o innovative yet standardized
electronic systems that improve quality,
perormance, saety and user riendliness. It
also helps simpliy the process o updating
sotware and hardware over the lie o a vehicle.
Freescales AUTOSAR-CompliantSoftware
Developing low-level sotware or our MCU
allows us to optimize the sotware or each
speciic MCU amily or even derivative.
While the industry trend is to work on the
Microcontroller Abstraction Layer (MCAL),
Freescale is the only vendor to also oer an
AUTOSAR operating system (OS).
Partner Supported Products
On demand and based on third-party solutions,
Freescale also oers a complete AUTOSARBasic Sotware package up to the RTE layer.
