Calendar of Events

WALNUT HILL TRADITIONS:

“Mr. Pickwick’s Tea & Tarts” Here, at the Patrons’ Club Tent, patrons, competitors, and accompanying guests may enjoy selected spirits and fine wines and partake of a luncheon buffet prepared to delight the most discriminating palate. Not yet a patron? Patron passes may be purchased at the Main Entrance.

“Ye Whip & Horn” You won’t go hungry at Walnut Hill. From breakfast to late afternoon, the sizzle of eggs, bacon, hamburgers, sausage, hot dogs, and chicken on the grill and the tempting aroma of other treats will let you know good food awaits you.

The “Walnut Cart” You won’t want to leave without taking a bag of Walnut Hill Spiced Walnuts home with you, or simply enjoy them as you watch a class. These gourmet treats are great out of the bag, on that special salad or as a dessert topping.

Carriage Lane Boutiques Walnut Hill is a haven for shoppers. You’ll find shops from Great Britain, Canada, and the U.S. featuring everything from designer clothes, to stunning jewelry, to painted furniture, to fine wines, to art and sculpture as well as everything for your horse, even the carriage. Carriage Museum A visit to the Carriage Museum will give you an opportunity to have an up close and personal

look at the way we moved ourselves and goods when carriages and wagons were the principal means of conveyance. The last known remaining carriage manufactured by the Spiegel Carriage Works here in Pittsford along with other representative historic vehicles will be on display. The history shared by our docents will add to your enjoyment.

Walnut Hill Hall of Fame Our forty three year history has provided us with the opportunity to recognize those who have made significant contributions to the world of classical driving through their participation here at Walnut Hill. Perhaps you will remember and recognize our stars and significant players honored in our Hall of Fame located in Carriage Lane Boutiques.

WHAT NOT TO MISS Ascot Night-Friday evening, August 8 Step into the world of “My Fair Lady” as you cheer on your favorite horses and carriages in competition. Enjoy ours or your own gourmet picnic supper and be thrilled by the romance of it all. Awards will be given for picnics. The special exhibitions include the Western New York Polo Club and a variety of acts performed by Lisa Dufresne and Horses! Horses! Horses! HORSES! HORSES! HORSES! Lisa has turned her love of animals into a lifelong career. From her youngest days growing up in Worcester, Massachusetts, her natural skill with horses led her to a career performing, choreographing and competing with horses. With over twenty years experience training animal acts of all kinds, Lisa’s performances with her animals have delighted audiences across the world. Her first love and specialty, Lisa’s horses have waltzed their way into Japan, danced in the Main Ballroom of the Waldorf Astoria in New York City, appeared on stage at Lincoln Center during the Lincoln Center Theater Festival, and circled the United States for various circuses, stage shows, fairs and horse theaters, including a number of years performing with Ringling Bros. Barnum & Bailey. Western New York Polo Club Throughout the weekend these polo players will be here to educate you on the sport of polo and

will be conducting a variety of demonstrations for all to enjoy. This team of high school students competes all over the Northeast in the National Interscholastic Polo League. Coming off a great season last year where the girls won the Northeast Preliminary Tournament title, they are currently gearing up for the year ahead. The girls look forward to meeting others with the same passion as them; come out show your support for this local group and meet these girls and their horses. Rochester Scottish Pipe Band A long standing tradition, the Rochester Scottish Pipe Band will join us once again following the return of the carriages from the Pleasure Drive through Mendon Ponds Park late Sunday morning. English Road Coaches & Park Drags These huge vehicles hitched to four horses, which once carried up to twenty passengers before the coming of the railroad, will excite you with their ability to maneuver through various tests and obstacle courses in the Walnut Hill Oval .

The Stables One of the more entertaining experiences a Walnut Hill visitor might enjoy is a visit to the “the stables.” Here you will see all being made ready for the next class going on in earnest, i.e. bathing and grooming the animals, cleaning the carriages and harnesses, putting the animals to the carriage. A great opportunity to meet the stars of the show up close.

Who are the judges and how do they judge? Our 2014 jury consists of prominent horsepersons from both the U. S. and Canada. We will have Mary Alice Matheson of Marshall, VA, Steve Holm of Shawsville, VA and Marsoe LaRose of British Columbia, Canada. Craig Kellogg of Southern Pines, NC will serve as our Technical Delegate. Lowest time wins, penalties for balls down. Presentation Pleasure Drive: a five mile drive through Mendon Ponds Park where each turnout is judged on the quality and suitability of their turnout presentation with emphasis on fitness, training, and manners of the animal’s. Concours D’Elegance: awarded to the turnout which presents the most elegant effect from an artistic point-of-view.
