When STAN KIRBY was six

years old, he tied a beach towel

around his neck and became

Super Commander Beach Boy.

He tried his best to protect sand

castles from the waves, keep

seagulls away from his french

fries, and keep the beach clean.

When Stan’s not creating the

awesome adventures of Captain

Awesome, he loves reading comic

books, eating okra, and hang

gliding (but not at the same time).

cover—as a mild-mannered clerk in one of Gotham’s most beloved children’s bookstores—was completely blown when his first picture book, KAPOW!, exploded onto the scene. Forced to leave the bookselling world behind, he now spends even more time in his secret Brooklyn, New York, hideout—where he uses his amazing artistic powers to strike fear in the hearts of bad guys everywhere!

Eugene McGillicudy is so excited for the class field trip to the Sunnyview Memorial Zoo. And he’s even more excited to see his favorite animals—the elephants! At the zoo, the class visits lions, tigers, and giraffes. But when they get to the Elephant Habitat, the elephants are nowhere to be found! Is Randy the tour guide really the evil Raging Randonkey trying to ruin the field trip? Can Captain Awesome, along with the help of Nacho Cheese Man and Supersonic Sal, save the day and find the missing elephants?

Chapter 1

Tomorrow Is the Day!

By Eugene

Two words:FIELD!TRIP! What? Oh! FIELD TRIP! Aside from “no homework,” are

there two greater words in the his-

tory of school? The words “fi eld”

and “trip” together promise a day of

fun, a day away from school, and a

day where anything can happen.

Those words are the chocolate

and peanut butter of education.

And for Eugene, this choco-

late-y, peanut-butter-y, fi eld-trippy

goodness was all going to happen

tomorrow.

“Don’t forget to bring your

permission slips, class,” said

Ms. Beasley, “or you won’t be

going to the zoo.”

Eugene McGillicudy wouldn’t

miss a fi eld trip any more than he’d

miss New Comic Book Day at the

comic book store. That’s because

the Sunnyview Memorial Zoo had

the greatest animals in the world.

“Just think of it, Charlie,”

Eugene said to his best friend,

Charlie Thomas Jones. “Lions with

razor-sharp laser claws!”

“And tigers with stripes of invis-

ibility!” Charlie added.

“And hippopom . . . hippotap . . .

um . . . hippos, with their giant mud-

covered butts of stinky stink,” Eugene

said.

“And don’t forget the elephants!”

Charlie said. “With their supertrunk

powers and huge, flappy ears that

can whip up the Whistling Wind of

Seven Cyclones!”

“That’s right!” Eugene agreed.

“Especially elephants.”

AWESOME!Eugene thought of that time in

Super Dude No. 18, the story The

Power Trunk Powers of Elephantom,

when Super Dude teamed up with

Super Duper Elephantom to stomp

Peanut Parker into crunchy pea-

nut butter and spread him on giant

pumpernickel toast.

What’s that you say? Super

Dude? You’ve heard of him, right?

WHAT? You mean you don’t know the

answer to the easiest question in

the Easy Question Book of Easy

Questions?

Question one: WHO

IS SUPER DUDE?

Answer: Super

Dude is the world’s

greatest superhero—

he’s greater than Mr. Greatman and

more rad than King Power Rad, the

really powerful leader of Radsyl-

vania. Super Dude is the superhero

who once knocked the stuffi ng out

of the evil Teddy Bearenstein and

dried up the deadly Spitballer before

he could fi re his lava spit from his

Ultra Plastic Straw of Evil.

But Super Dude was more

than a true hero and Eugene’s

favorite of all time. He was the

reason Eugene became Sunny-

view’s first and most awe-

some superhero. That’s

right. Eugene had

a secret identity:

He was: CAPTAIN

AWESOME!

MI-TEE!

8888888

7p CA MISSING ELEPHANTS INT HC.indd 8 12/18/13 1:11 PM

It’s true. Sunnyview had its

very own superhero! And not just

one, either.

There was . . . ANOTHER!

Charlie was the superhero

Nacho Cheese Man—the only hero

with the power of canned cheese!

CHEESY YO!CHEESY YO!

7p CA MISSING ELEPHANTS INT HC.indd 9 12/18/13 1:11 PM

Along with their class’s superpet

hamster, Turbo, Eugene and Charlie

formed the Sunnyview Superhero

Squad to stop the eviling of bad guys

and to keep Sunnyview safe.

But what happened when they

discovered that their neighbor

Sally Williams was also a “Keep

Sunnyview Safe” superhero called

Supersonic Sal? Well, she was

asked to join the group too!

Together these four heroes

would put badness in its place! And

that place would be . . . far away

from all goodness.
