Earlier this month, we celebrated our Independence Day. This day celebrates our right to be a free nation. Over the years, our nation’s citizens have done many remarkable things for our country to remain free and independent. However, complacency is not an option. Our freedoms are not guaranteed. We cannot just hope our freedoms will be preserved. Benjamin Franklin said “ He that lives upon hope will die fasting”. We must all work toward a common goal: Preserving our Freedom. Since our last meeting, the Captain William Barron Chapter has been very busy: On June 7 th , our Color Guard presented the Colors at the Veteran’s Golf Tournament at Holly Lake Ranch in Big Sandy. On June 27 th , our Color Guard presented the Colors at the Federal Courthouse Immigration Ceremony in Tyler. On July 3 rd , Compatriot Tom Copeland presented a patriotic program at the Hawkins Assembly of God Church. On July 11 th , we held our annual Flag Retirement Ceremony at Tyler Memorial Park Cemetery in Tyler. Compatriot Tom Copeland delivered the keynote address. We’ve included several pictures of the ceremony in this newsletter. It is a large part of the SAR brand and helps to introduce and expose our chapter, and our mission, to the public. It is a fulfilling experience for the Guard members, as well. If so inclined, please join us. We need you! One sad note to report: Last week our chapter lost one of its good members, Compatriot Jack Ludwick. Jack was a teacher and principle by profession, and had served in the Armed Forces. Jack was a member of our Color Guard and was ready to go at a moment’s notice. He frequently wrote articles in the Tyler paper and always kept up on current events. Jack will be missed by all. Our Summer Board of Managers Meeting (BOM) will be held in Houston during July 29- 31. Registration can be made on line, or it can be mailed in. If you have not attended a BOM in the past, please consider attending. This is where you can learn how our state organization works and you can meet all of the state officers. TimintroducedguestandprospectivememberJimWimberley.TimdiscussedvariousawardstheChapterrecentlyreceivedattheStateConvention.Hethenledadiscussion,withinputfromTomCopeland,abouttheneedtogetadditionalmembersinvolvedindoingmorevolunteerworksoourChaptercontinuestoparticipateinmanyactivities.
CliffJohnsonwaspresentedtheBronzeColorGuardMedal and the Bronze Color Guard Medal Certificate. Themeetingthentemporarilyadjournedforthebuffetdinner.
AfterdinnerTomCopelandintroducedJimmyJones,whogaveaveryinformativeprogramontheroleofLouisianaandTexaspioneersinsupportingtheAmericanRevolution.
