PrincesaSofía MAPFRE, una de las competi-ciones más prestigiosas del circuitointernacional.Este año celebramos la 40ª edición deltrofeo y como principal novedad, cabedestacar la inclusión de la regata en laISAF Sailing World Cup, un nuevo cir-cuito de la Federación Internacional deVela compuesto por las siete competi-ciones de vela olímpica más importan-tes del mundo. Las aguas baleares serán el escenariode este encuentro marítimo y reuniránembarcaciones y regatistas de más de45 naciones, entre los que destacan lamayoría de campeones olímpicos,mundiales y europeos en activo.Finalmente, quiero expresar mi mássincera enhorabuena a los organiza-dores y a todas las personas quehacen posible la ejecución y organiza-ción de la regata. Princesa Sofia MAP-FRE in the ISAF Sailing World Cup,an International Sailing Federationnew circuit, composed of the sevenmost important Olympic sail compe-titions of the world.The Balearic Island’s water, in theMediterranean sea, will be the stageof this maritime meeting that willbring together crafts and sailorsfrom over 45 nations, among whichthe most European and World activeOlympic Champions.Finally, I express my most sincerecongratulations to the organizersand all the people that make possi-ble the execution and the organiza-tion of the race. MAPFRE ha celebrado en 2008 su75 aniversario y para ello ha organi-zado diferentes actos con los que haconmemorado los logros consegui-dos en este periodo, entre los quedestacan el crecimiento experimen-tado y la dimensión internacionaladquirida. MAPFRE es hoy un grangrupo empresarial, que mira haciael futuro con una enorme ilusión porser más grande y mejor.Desde 1933 hasta hoy ha habidomuchos momentos destacados, yaque han sido 75 años muy intensos,de evolución continua y crecimientoconstante. El Trofeo S.A.R. Princesa Sofía MAP-FRE empezó siendo una regata casi“amateur” para la clase Dragón y haterminado convertida en un referen-te para toda la vela mundial. Su his-toria no está escrita en los libros,sino que permanece en la memoriade aquellos que año tras año hanparticipado en las treinta y nueveediciones disputadas y que ahoracelebran el 40º aniversario de laprestigiosa regata mallorquina.El Trofeo S.A.R. Princesa Sofía seconstituyó en 1968 con una únicaclase participante, el Dragón, y conbase en el Real Club Náutico dePalma. Seis años más tarde, en1974, pasó a denominarse ademásSemana Internacional de Palma, alincorporarse, por expreso deseo deS.M. la Reina Doña Sofía -entoncesaún Princesa, y de ahí el nombre dela competición-, las clases Soling,

470, Snipe, 420, Finn y Europa. Fueentonces cuando la regata pasó aestar organizada por cuatro clubes,entonces los de Palma, S’Arenal, SanAntonio de la Playa y de Mar -en lugarde la actual Calanova-. Ello permitióseguir creciendo, y en 1976 se dio laentrada a los Vaurien y a losCruceros. Dos años más tarde empe-zó a perfilarse el futuro carácter olím-pico de la regata, con la sustitucióntemporal del Dragón por el Star.

Apoyo realLa Familia Real Española ha estadosiempre muy ligada al Trofeo S.A.R.Princesa Sofía MAPFRE, de hechodesde su primera edición. El entoncesPríncipe Don Juan Carlos empezó nave-gando en la clase Dragón, en la queconsiguió la victoria junto al Duque deArión y Félix Gancedo en los años 1973,1974 y 1975 a bordo de “Fortuna”.

También desde el principio el TrofeoS.A.R. Princesa Sofía premió con untrofeo al ganador absoluto de todaslas clases, y desde el comienzo asi-mismo gozó de una participaciónmuy internacional. En la 13ª edición,por ejemplo, se registraron 15 paísesparticipantes. La cifra dista muchode las 48 naciones que se inscribie-ron en la cita del año pasado, perono está nada mal por ser del año1980. Fue una edición emblemática,porque además contó con la partici-pación de S.M. el Rey, que compitióen Crucero, y de S.A.R. el Príncipe deAsturias y las Infantas Elena yCristina, que lo hicieron en 420.Pero la historia del Trofeo S.A.R.Princesa Sofía es también una his-toria de anécdotas, como la querecuerda Quico Llompart, socio fun-dador del Real Club Náutico dePalma y veterano regatista. “En una

ocasión, durante la regata larga deCruceros, cuando estábamos apunto de llegar a Cabrera, tuvimosque regresar porque la Armada esta-ba realizando unas maniobras mili-tares. Yo me enteré por radio y unono se puede imaginar el chasco quenos llevamos todos”, relataLlompart.

Hacia la profesionalizaciónEl ambiente “amateur” de aquellasprimeras ediciones, en que habíauna veintena de participantes porclase, hoy ya queda muy lejos. Hacevarios años, y ante la avalancha desolicitudes que registraba la compe-tición en la mayoría de sus categorí-as, los organizadores decidieronapostar por la calidad y limitar laparticipación, seleccionando a lastripulaciones en función de su posi-ción en el ranking de la ISAF, lo quese tradujo en una prueba de grannivel, más competida y espectacu-lar. En este camino hacia la profesio-nalización se decidió apostar plena-mente por la vela olímpica, eliminan-do del programa las clases de velaligera que aún participaban, aunquemanteniendo el Dragón por ser laclase inaugural. Asimismo, el TrofeoS.A.R. Princesa Sofía MAPFRE devela olímpica se desvinculó totalmen-te de los Cruceros.Así, del Trofeo S.A.R. Princesa SofíaMAPFRE casi “amateur” de los prime-ros años se ha pasado a una competi-ción con un alto grado de profesionali-zación, lo que ha contribuido a que laregata tenga una gran difusión mediá-tica y un notable impacto social.A ello ha ayudado sin duda la ReinaDoña Sofía -que preside cada año laentrega de premios-, pero también laexperiencia y profesionalización de losorganizadores. Precisamente ennoviembre del año pasado la ISAFpremió con la medalla de plata almérito deportivo a uno de los hom-bres más importantes del equipo, aJaime Enseñat, que presidió el comité

organizador del Trofeo S.A.R. PrincesaSofía MAPFRE durante 35 años.

Y para muchas de ellas la prue-ba mallorquina es selectiva para laformación de sus equipos olímpicos.Así es cómo en 40 años la regata seha convertido en una marca con enti-dad propia y en un emblema para lavela española y mundial, lo que ha

quedado certificado con su inclu-sión en la nueva ISAF Sailing WorldCup, precisamente en el año de su40º aniversario. “El Trofeo S.A.R.Princesa Sofía MAPFRE cumple 40años y lo hace situado entre lassiete mejores regatas del mundo. Lacreación de la ISAF Sailing WorldCup no podía llegar en mejormomento para nosotros, es un rega-lo precioso para estos 40 años detrabajo y afán de superación”, expli-ca Jaume Carbonell, presidente dela Comisión Ejecutiva del ConsorcioTrofeo S.A.R. The Trofeo S.A.R. Princesa Sofia MAP-FRE started as an almost “amateur”regatta for the Dragon class and hasbecome a reference for the wholeworld of sailing. Its history is not writ-ten in the books but remains in thememory of those that year after yearhave participated in the thirty nineeditions held and celebrate now the40th anniversary of the prestigiousMajorcan regatta. The Trofeo S.A.R. Princesa Sofia wasborn in 1968 with only one participa-ting class, the Dragon, based at RealClub Náutico de Palma. Six years

later, in 1974, it was also calledPalma International Week with theincorporation of new classes Soling,470, Snipe, 420, Finn and Europeby express wish of HM Queen Sofia,the reason why the regatta has hername. It was then that the regattabecame organised by four clubs:Palma, S’Arenal, San Antonio de laPlaya and de Mar -in the place ofthe present organiser Calanova-.This enabled the regatta to continuegrowing and in 1976 the event wasopen to new classes Vaurien andcruisers. Two years later the Olympiccharacter of the regatta began toshow with the temporary replace-ment of the Dragon by the Star.

Royal supportThe Spanish Royal Family has alwaysbeen very involved with the TrofeoS.A.R. Princesa Sofia MAPFRE, infact, from the first edition. The thenPrince Don Juan Carlos began sailingin the Dragon class in which he wontogether with the Duke of Arión andFélix Gancedo in 1973, 1974 and1975 on board “Fortuna”.Also from the beginning, the TrofeoS.A.R. Princesa Sofia awarded atrophy to the absolute winner of allclasses and had a very internationalparticipation. For instance, in the13th edition, 15 nations entered.This figure is far away from the 48nations entered in last year’s edi-tion, but it is not a bad number con-sidering it was 1980. It was a spe-cial edition because it had the parti-cipation of HM the King in the crui-ser class and HRH the Prince ofAsturias and Infantas Elena yCristina, in 420.But the history of the Trofeo S.A.R.Princesa Sofia is also a history fullof anecdotes, as the one recalled byQuico Llompart, founding memberof Real Club Náutico de Palma andveteran sailor. “Once, during thecruiser offshore race, when we werealmost at Cabrera, we had to sail

back because the Navy was doingsome military manoeuvres. I heard iton the radio and one cannot imagi-ne the disappointment experiencedby all of us”, explains Llompart.

Towards a professional eventThe “amateur” atmosphere of thosefirst editions, in which there werearound twenty competitors perclass, seems far away. For manyyears and due to the high number ofentries in most classes, the organi-sers decided to work towards qualityand limit participation by selecting

teams in accordance with the ISAFworld sailing ranking lists. The resultwas a high level regatta, with strongand spectacular racing. On this wayto becoming a professional event, itwas decided to concentrate onOlympic sailing with the disappearan-ce of the non-Olympic dinghy sailingevents but maintaining the Dragon asinaugural class. Furthermore, theTrofeo S.A.R. Princesa Sofia MAPFREfor Olympic sailing was separatedfrom the Cruiser competition. In this way, the Trofeo S.A.R. PrincesaSofia MAPFRE almost “amateur”

during the first editions has becomea highly professional event withgreat media and social impact. Undoubtedly, Queen Doña Sofia - whopresides over the prize giving cere-mony every year-, has contributed to alarge extent together with the experien-ce and professional approach of theorganisers to the success of the regat-ta. In fact, last November, the ISAFawarded the silver medal to JaimeEnseñat, one of the most importantpersons of the team and who was pre-sident of the organising committee ofthe Trofeo S.A.R. Princesa Sofia MAP-FRE during 35 years.

Jaime Enseñat Velasco es uno de los“pesos pesados” de la vela españolay conoce como nadie los entresijosdel Trofeo S.A.R. Princesa Sofía MAP-FRE. De hecho es su alma máter y hasido hasta hace dos años el presi-dente del Comité Organizador. El añopasado la ISAF otorgó a JaimeEnseñat la medalla de plata al méritodeportivo. De esta forma, se recono-ció la gran labor ejercida por Enseñatal frente de organismos como laFederación Balear de Vela y de los

Comités Organizadores de la Copadel Rey y del Trofeo S.A.R PrincesaSofía MAPFRE.

-¿Cómo surgió la idea de crear unaregata de estas carácterísitcas?-Hace cuatro décadas, el entoncesPríncipe de España navegaba enDragón, yo también, junto a otrosregatistas del RCN de Palma: PacoOliver, Juan Pieras, Riera de laPortilla, Guillermo Cryns y TomásMiró. Los ahora Reyes de Españahabían comprado un trofeo y quisie-ron que se organizase una competi-ción de la clase Dragón que llevasepor nombre el de S.A.R. PrincesaSofía. En principio, la regata alterna-ba su sede entre las ciudades deBarcelona y Palma. La primera vezque nos tocó a nosotros organiza-mos una entrega de premios en elPueblo Español tan impresionanteque varios regatistas extranjerossolicitaron a SSMM y a la RealFederación Española de Vela que lacompetición se celebrara perma-nentemente en la ciudad de Palma.Después el Dragón dejó de ser olím-pico y la clase decayó. Entonces sedecidió abrirlo a otras clases comoel Vaurien, el Snipe… y, poco a poco,la regata fue cogiendo tal prestigioque tuvimos que limitar su partici-pación a las clases olímpicas.-Este año se celebra el 40 aniver-sario del Trofeo S.A.R. PrincesaSofía MAPFRE. ¿Cuáles cree quehan sido los mayores logros deesta regata?-Hemos paseado el nombre deMallorca por todo el mundo. Esteevento ha significado la aperturatotal de Palma a la vela y al mundoentero. También ha sido una promo-ción muy importante para el RealClub Náutico de Palma, como orga-nizador único durante muchos años,y de los otros tres clubes que seadhirieron como sedes posterior-mente: Club Nàutic S’Arenal, ClubMarítimo Sant Antonio de la Playa y

Actualmente, en Españano existe ninguna regata tan inter-nacional como el Sofía.Y me atrevoa decir que en Europa no existe nin-guna regata que supere el nivel delTrofeo S.A.R Princesa Sofía MAPFRE.-¿Qué papel juega la Familia Realen el Trofeo S.A.R. Princesa SofíaMAPFRE?-Lo ha sido todo. Tanto los Reyescomo el Príncipe y las Infantas hanregateado durante años en clasescomo el Dragón, 470 y 420.Siempre se han mostrado muy inte-resados por los asuntos concernien-tes a este trofeo y siempre han apo-yado todas las decisiones que hatomado el Comité Organizador y quehan permitido su transformaciónprogresiva hasta alcanzar lo quees ahora: una gran regatade vela olímpica. La Reina Sofía,además, ha asistido a todas lasentregas de premios.-¿Cómo valora el apoyo institucio-nal que ha tenido el Trofeo S.A.R.Princesa Sofía MAPFRE? ¿Y elapoyo de los patrocinadores conMapfre actualmente al frente?-Primero se contó con el apoyo de laFederación Española de Vela y delAyuntamiento de Palma, para des-pués sumarse el resto de organis-mos oficiales de Baleares: el Governde les Illes Baleares y el Consell deMallorca. A todos ellos estamossumamente agradecidos. En el apar-tado de sponsors privados, debodecir que éste ha estado muy ligadopor casualidad al mundo de las ase-guradoras: Axa Mare Nostrum yahora con MAPFRE, a la que felicita-mos por mantener su patrocinio enlos difíciles tiempos que vivimos.También se ha contado con el inesti-mable apoyo de Majorica. ción del trofeo, además de estar conla organización del evento.-Usted ha estado desde el nacimien-to de este trofeo. ¿Cuáles fueronlas mayores dificultades por lasque atravesó?-El más difícil fue que la gente creyeraen esta regata. Al principio, el TrofeoS.A.R. Princesa Sofía MAPFRE desper-taba muy poco interés. La verdad esque no le daban la menor importancia,puesto que ya existían la semana deHyerès y la semana de vela de Kiel.Hubo que trabajar muchos años enpromoción para darla a conocer y ani-mar a los regatistas a que participa-sen. Estuvimos en todas las reunionesde la ISAF, donde presentábamos laregata. Ahora no hay regatista destaca-do que no haya navegado en nuestraBahía y participado en esta regata.Hemos llegado a acoger más de 1.000barcos, que se dice pronto, pero que

para mi es una cifra desmesurada.-¿Qué opinión le merece los nuevoscambios que ha incorporado laISAF?-Creo que ha sido equivocado elimi-nar una clase que aportaba tantaespectacularidad como el Tornado.Tampoco veo acertada la incorpora-ción del match race, ya que, aunquetécnicamente sea bueno, se pierdela espectacularidad de las salidascon hasta 54 barcos.-¿Y la incorporación este año de lavela paraolímpica como principalnovedad del Trofeo S.A.R. PrincesaSofía MAPFRE?-Me parece perfecto porqueasí está abriendo el deporte de lavela a otras personas. Ofrece laposibilidad de practicar y competiren una regata tan prestigiosa ypopular a quienes antes no teníanesta oportunidad.

Last yearJaime Enseñat was awarded theISAF silver medal in recognition tothe great work carried out at theFederación Balear de Vela and theOrganising Committees of the Copadel Rey and the Trofeo S.A.RPrincesa Sofia MAPFRE.

-How was the idea born to createan event of such characteristics?-Four decades ago, the then Princeof Spain sailed in the Dragon, asmyself, together with other sailorsfrom RCN de Palma: Paco Oliver,Juan Pieras, Riera de la Portilla,Guillermo Cryns and Tomás Miró.The present King and Queen ofSpain had bought a trophy to benamed SAR Princesa Sofia. In thebeginning, the venue changed bet-ween Barcelona and Palma. Whenwe organised it for the first time, weprepared such an impressive prizegiving ceremony at Pueblo Españolthat many foreign competitors askedTheir Majesties and the RealFederación Española de Vela to fixthe venue of the competition inPalma. After that, the Dragon classwas no longer Olympic and the fleetdecreased. So it was then decidedto open the event to classes such asthe Vaurien, Snipe… and little by lit-tle the regatta grew, so much sothat we had to limit the participationto the Olympic classes.

-This will be the 40th anniversary ofthe Trofeo S.A.R. Princesa SofiaMAPFRE. Which are in your opinionthe greatest achievements?-We have made Majorca known allaround the world. This event hasmeant the positioning of Palma in thesailing sector and in the whole world.It has also been an important promo-tion for Real Club Náutico de Palma,as main organiser during many years,and for the Clubs that joined theorganisation later on: Club NàuticS’Arenal, Club Marítimo Sant Antoniode la Playa and Escuela de VelaCalaNova. The Trofeo SAR PrincesaSofia MAPFRE was the origin of thenautical boom in Palma and contribu-ted to the development of Olympicsailing. At present, there isno event in Spain as international asthe Sofia. And I dare say there is noevent in Europe with a higher levelthan that of the Trofeo S.A.R PrincesaSofia MAPFRE.-Which is the role of the RoyalFamily in the Trofeo S.A.R. PrincesaSofia MAPFRE?-They have been everything. The Kingand Queen as well as the Prince andthe Infantas have sailed for many yearsin classes such as the Dragon, 470and 420. They have always showngreat interest with matters related tothe regatta and have always given sup-port to the decisions made by theOrganising Committee enabling itsgrowth to become what it is now: agreat Olympic sailing regatta. Besides,Queen Sofia has attended all of theprize giving ceremonies.-How do you evaluate the institutio-nal support of the Trofeo S.A.R.Princesa Sofia MAPFRE? And thesponsor support with MAPFRE asthe main sponsor?-We first had the support of theFederación Española de Vela andPalma City Council and then the otherofficial institutions of Baleares joinedthem: the Govern de les IllesBaleares, Consell de Mallorca. We

are deeply grateful to all of them.Regarding the private sponsors, theevent has always been closely lin-ked to insurance companies: AxaMare Nostrum and now Mapfre,which we thank and congratulate forits continued sponsorship in thistime of crisis. We have also countedon the invaluable support fromMajorica. The role of a private spon-sor is to achieve maximum promo-tion of the regatta as well as to beinvolved with the event organisation.-You have been involved with theevent since the beginning. Whatwere the main difficulties faced?-The most difficult thing was tomake people believe in the regatta.In the beginning, the Trofeo S.A.R.Princesa Sofia MAPFRE awoke verylittle interest. The truth is that it wasnot taken into account, and all theattention was on the already exis-ting regattas of Hyerès (SOF) andKiel (Kieler Woche). We had to workhard for many years to promote theevent and attract sailors to partici-pate. We attended all ISAF meetingsto promote the regatta. At presentthere is no outstanding sailor whohasn’t sailed in our Bay or participa-ted in our event. We have reached1,000 boats, an outstanding num-ber if you ask me. -What do you think about the lastchanges made by ISAF?-I think it is wrong to see a class asspectacular as the Tornadodisappear. I don’t consider theMatch race a very good idea,although it might be good techni-cally, the amazing scene of a startwith up to 54 boats is lost.-And what do you think about theincorporation of the Paralympics’ sai-ling competition this year in the TrofeoS.A.R. Princesa Sofia MAPFRE?-I think it is a perfect decision thatopens the sport of sailing to everyo-ne. It offers people who didn’t havethe opportunity before to practiceand compete in a prestigious event.

Princesa SofíaMAPFRE supone el estreno en el con-tinente europeo de la vela paralímpi-ca como nueva división de la ISAFSailing World Cup.La vela paralímpica, que fue deportede exhibición en los JuegosParalímpicos de Atlanta 1996 y que apartir de Sydney 2000 ha participadoen el programa de todas las citas,difiere de la olímpica en el equipa-miento, que es adaptado a los distin-tos tipos de discapacidad. El modode puntuación se corresponde con elgrado de minusvalía, de ahí quedeportistas con distintas discapaci-dades puedan competir juntos.En la regata mallorquina están con-vocadas tres clases, que son las quecompetirán en los JuegosParalímpicos de Londres 2012:2.4mR, Skud-18 y Sonar.De los tres barcos, el 2.4mR es el másconocido en España, con una flota deuna veintena de unidades. Nacida enEstocolmo en 1983, se trata de unaembarcación quillada individual, quees una miniatura a escala 1:5 de losantiguos barcos que competían en laCopa América. El patrón va sentadomirando a proa, con todos los controlesdel trimado a mano. Precisamente eltrimado, así como la táctica y la estra-tegia, son las claves de la competiciónen este barco, ya que las diferenciasde peso del tripulante no son relevan-tes, al estar éste siempre muy cercadel centro de gravedad del barco.Concebido en el 2005 y estrenado enlos Juegos de Pekín, el Skud-18 es un

monotipo doble inspirado en el 49er,pero adaptado a las necesidades de losregatistas discapacitados. Princesa SofiaMAPFRE will welcome the Paralympiccompetition in the year of the laun-ching of the ISAF Sailing World Cup.Paralympic sailing was an exhibitionsport in the 1996 Atlanta Games andbecame a full medal sport for the firsttime in Sydney 2000. The equipmentis adapted to the different disabilitiesand scoring is also made in accordan-ce with the level of disability allowingsailors with different disabilities to sail

together. The regatta is open to thethree events that will compete in the2012 London Olympics: 2.4mR,Skud-18 and Sonar.Of the three Paralympic events, the2.4mR is the better known in Spain,with a fleet of approximately 20 units.Born in Stockholm in 1983, it is a sin-gle-handed keelboat, a miniature atscale 1:5 of the boats that competedin the America’s Cup. The helm sitslooking forward with all the trimmingcontrols at reach. In fact, the trim-

ming as well as the tactic and stra-tegy are key elements of the compe-tition on this boat; crew weight diffe-rences are not relevant because thecrew is always placed very near theboat’s centre of gravity.Conceived in 2005 and with itsdebut at the Beijing Olympics, theSkud-18 is a double-handed onedesign inspired in the 49er, butadapted to the needs of disabledsailors. At least one of the crewmembers must be female and it has

TheSonar is a triple handed keelboatwith an asymmetrical spinnaker.Designed in the eighties by USdesigner Bruce Kirby and introducedin the Paralympic competition in theyear 2000, it offers a perfect combi-nation of the concepts of safety, effi-ciency, features and fun.These three classes, whose partici-pants are subject to qualifyingfor their national teams, willsail in a separate racing area infront of Calanova.

Women keelboat match raceThe women keelboat math race willdebut at the 2012 London Olympicsreplacing the Yngling. The boatselected by the ISAF is the Elliott 6m., although with some changes toadapt it to a women’s crew such asa smaller sail. The Elliott 6 m will also be a threefemale crew boat as the Ynglingwhose last participation as Olympicclass was at the 2008 BeijingOlympics. The 205 kgs weight isalso maintained.Designed by Greg Elliott, it hasa fixed keel and an open cockpit.Besides, it is a boat easy tomanoeuvre and that reachesspeed very easily.

The last regatta of the ISAFSailing World Cup will be theSkandia Sail for Gold Regatta, whichwill held in September in Weymouth(Great Britain), the sailing venue ofthe 2012 London Olympics.

These events join the other Olympic

disciplines that participate in theregatta: 470 men and women, RS:Xmen and women, Laser Standardand Radial, Finn, Star and 49er.Another novelty of the ISAF SailingWorld Cup is that it will have indivi-dual standings and a Nations cup, anew incentive for the Trofeo S.A.R.Princesa Sofia MAPFRE. With thesponsorship of Spanish leading insu-rance company MAPFRE for fourthconsecutive year, the regatta gatherstogether every year in the bay ofPalma around 800 boats and approxi-mately 1,200 competitors represen-ting over 45 nations, with activeOlympic, world and European cham-pions among them. It is one of themost international events so manynations, with Spain among them, useit as trial event for the selection oftheir Olympic teams. Therefore, it isan important focus of interest for themedia, with almost 150 accreditedmedia representatives each year.As third event of the ISAF SailingWorld Cup, the Trofeo S.A.R.Princesa Sofia MAPFRE will begin tomark the favourite teams to get thefinal victory of this enthralling andinnovating world circuit. Princesa SofíaMAPFRE, que ha sido elegido para for-mar parte de la ISAF Sailing WorldCup, un nuevo circuito de laFederación Internacional de Vela(ISAF) compuesto por las siete compe-ticiones de vela olímpica más impor-tantes del mundo.La Bahía de Palma es uno de losmejores campos de regatas delmundo gracias al Embat, un viento

térmico que se produce cuando la tie-rra se calienta más que el mar por efec-to del sol, con lo que el aire de tierrapierde densidad y, al subir, el aire másfrío del mar tiende a ocupar el “espaciovacío” que ha dejado el aire caliente entierra. Ello provoca una brisa hacia tie-rra más o menos constante, a partir delas 12 y hasta las 18 horas.Además de su magnífico viento,Palma, una ciudad cosmopolita cuyaárea metropolitana reúne a más de400.000 habitantes, cuenta con unasinfraestructuras de primer nivel. Elmoderno aeropuerto de Son SantJoan, situado a 8 kilómetros al estedel centro de la ciudad, cuenta conuna gran capacidad y un buen núme-ro de conexiones con las principalesciudades europeas que resuelven porcompleto el problema de las comuni-caciones. Es el tercer aeropuertoespañol por número de pasajeros,sólo detrás del Aeropuerto de Madrid-Barajas y del de Barcelona.El puerto de Palma cubre una extensalínea de costa comprendida entre elMoll Vell, frente a la catedral, y elDique del oeste. Es utilizado para eltransporte de mercancía, barcos pes-queros, embarcaciones de recreo,

transporte de pasajeros y buquesmilitares. Existen dos estacionesmarítimas en servicio en el Muelle dePeraires, desde donde operan los cru-ceros y los barcos de línea regularcon destino a Barcelona, Valencia,Ibiza, Mahón o Denia. The Bay of Palma is one of the bestracing areas in the world thanks tothe Embat, a thermal wind that blowswhen the land is warmer than thesea, with the land air losing densityand the cooler sea air taking the“empty space” left by the warm landair.
