WHAT ARE THE CARDS FOR?

You can use the cards to:

>Definenewroles.

>Determinethecapabilitiesrequiredfortheteam andtherole.

>Clarifytheresponsibilitiesofanexistingrole.

>Developselectioncriteria.

>Identifyeffectiveselectionoptions.

THERE ARE 24 CAPABILITY CARDS AND 3 PRIORITY CARDS

Thecapabilitycards:

>Aregroupedbyskills,personalqualitiesandspecificknowledge(youwillneedtoincludethespecific knowledgecapabilitiesonthe4blankcardsprovided).

>Providebehaviouralindicatorsforeachcapability.

>Includebestselectionoptionsforeachcapability.

>Arenumberedforeaseofuse.

Theprioritycardsareincludedtoassistwhendeterminingtherelativeimportanceofdifferentcapabilities.

HOW TO USE THESE CARDS

1. Bringtogetheragroupofpeopleeachwithaset ofcards.Forexample:theselectionpanelmembers,yourteam,othermanagersand/orclients.

2. Eachpersonchoosesfromthesetanagreednumberofcards(4-6)thattheybelievebestidentifiesthecapabilitiesneededfortherole.

3. Group members then discuss the reasons behind their particularchoices.Forexample:

>Criticalskills,knowledgeand/orqualitiesrequired fortheroleandteam.

>Capabilitiesrequiredforthefuturedirection oftherole.

4. Followingthediscussion,asagroup,reachconsensusaboutthecapabilitiesrequired.

>Thetruevalueofthisprocessistheconversationthatresults.Itrequiresmorethansimplytallying thecapabilitieschosenmostoften.

>Thisisalsoanopportunitytodeterminespecificcapabilities(i.e.specialistknowledge)notcaptured bythecards.

5. Usethecapabilitiesidentifiedtocreatethe selectioncriteria(aimfor4–6).

6. Usetheselectionoptionstoputtogetherapackagethatwillselectforthecapabilitiesidentified.
