Haystack Rock

Explore colorful tidepools, watch nesting puffins or photograph the sunset at Cannon Beach’s world famous landmark. At low tide, you’ll find sea stars of many colors, anemones that open like flowers at the bottom of the pools and tiny hermit crabs that scurry along in borrowed shells. From early spring to early summer, bring your binoculars and watch nesting seabirds including the Northwest’s most accessible colony of Tufted Puffins. Haystack Rock is a natural treasure, a state protected marine environment and part of the Oregon Islands National Wildlife Refuge.

Hug Point features beach access where you will find caves, a small waterfall and the remains of the old roadway that once skirted the cliff face. About ten minutes south of Cannon Beach, you enter Oswald West State Park. The park encompasses nearly 2500 acres with several miles of hiking trails and is great for viewing spectacular wildlife.

Beach Access and Viewpoints

Cannon Beach offers nearly four miles of scenic sandy public beach with dramatic offshore rock formations. You can enjoy the scenery from many viewpoints and 44 public beach accesses are your passage to a wide variety of beach fun. The main public beach access points are adjacent to public parking areas in Downtown, Midtown, Tolovana Park and Les Shirley Park. Downtown, at the end of 2nd Street, is a viewpoint and a stairway to the beach. Just a block to the north is Whale Park, where a whale sculpture commemorates the visit from the Lewis and Clark expedition in 1806. Tolovana Wayside at the south end of Cannon Beach offers beach access and views looking to the north of Haystack Rock and south to Silver Point. From many points on the beach, you can see the Tillamook Rock Lighthouse just offshore to the north.

HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVEMuch of the area’s earliest history

is known from Captain William Clark’s journal describing the

January 1806 visit by a small expedition party from Lewis and Clark’s Corps of Discovery. Clark’s maps and journals describe a small village of several wood houses of the native Tillamook people who lived on both sides of the creek he named Ecola. When railroad lines were finally finished between Astoria and Seaside in the late 1890s, homesteading expanded to this area, then known as Elk Creek. In the 1930s, with the completion of Highway 101, the automobile replaced the train as the way to reach the Coast.

When Sunset Highway (Highway 26) was completed, Cannon Beach became just a short drive from Portland.

The Tillamook Rock Lighthouse, seen from Cannon Beach and Seaside, is one of the Coast's most interesting iconic structures. Located about two miles out to sea on a lone rock off the shores of Tillamook Head, the lighthouse was an amazing, dangerous and even deadly feat of construction. The lighthouse certainly earned its nickname, "Terrible Tilly." Storms often brought flying rocks and debris through the lantern room and roof. The inspiration behind Cannon Beach's name came as a result of a shipwreck

Page 15: Cannon Beach Magazine 2013

in 1846. While crossing a tumultuous Columbia River Bar, the United States Naval schooner Shark ran aground and was torn apart by rough waters. Cannons from the ship, still attached to portions of her deck, were washed out to sea, some eventually washing ashore in the area now known as Arch Cape.

The Cannon Beach History Center is home to the original cannon that was found on the beach. For more history of the area, the history center features unique artifacts, artwork, photographs, audio presentations and hands-on displays and admission is free. The Cannon Beach History Center at Sunset and Spruce is open Thursday through Monday from 1pm to 5pm. Call (503) 436-9301 for information.

Explore Tidepools

Many colorful and strange creatures live where the rocky coastline meets the sea. As the tide recedes, a unique and diverse environment is revealed in tidepools and intertidal areas. Bright sea stars in a variety of colors cling tightly to rocks. Green anemones lay open like flowers at the bottom of pools. A trained eye will find varieties of crabs, snails, limpets, coral, sponge and colorful sea slugs known as nudibranchs. One of the most accessible locations to explore the intertidal zone is at the base of Haystack Rock. Check the tide tables for the lowest tide and arrive ready to explore as the tide is going out. Between March and September, during daytime low tides, the Haystack Rock Awareness Program provides interpretive information on the beach near the rock with displays of live intertidal specimens and spotting scopes for bird watching. Be aware that these areas can be dangerous because of wave surges, slippery rocks and sharp surfaces, so always keep safety in mind. Walk

only on sand or bare rock to avoid damage to the life in these amazing natural areas. The area surrounding Haystack Rock is designated a “Marine Garden” and all marine life is protected. No collecting of any materials is permitted here and you are encouraged to apply this rule to any intertidal area.

Go Bird Watching

Watch for the many rare and spectacular birds that can be seen here. Haystack Rock’s grassy covering provides nesting ground for Tufted Puffins from early spring through early summer, offering the Northwest’s most accessible location for viewing these brightly colored characters. Many other varieties of birds feed, visit or nest on Haystack Rock including Western Gulls, Pigeon Guil lemots, cormorants, Bald Eagles, Harlequin Ducks and Black Oystercatchers, making it a year-round attraction for bird watchers. Thousands of common murres can be seen in spring and

We timed our visit to Haystack Rock for low tide and found colorful clusters of sea stars and other fascinating creatures. We watched puffins fly to and from the rock and when a bald eagle soared over, all of the nesting birds created a squawking frenzy.

summer on Bird Rocks near Chapman Point. Many varieties of shorebirds are spotted on beaches and along the Ecola Creek estuary during spring and fall migrations. Look for a variety of seabirds and ducks in fall and winter. From spring through fall, pelicans can be observed soaring just above the waves or diving into the water with a splash. See Bald Eagles and Peregrine Falcons as they patrol the coast year-round. Other great bird watching locations include Ecola State Park, the downtown wetlands on Spruce Street and the now decommissioned water treatment ponds, just east of downtown on 2nd Street.

Spot Marine Life

There’s nothing like the experience of seeing a 30-ton Gray Whale surface and exhale with a “whoosh,” sending a spout of mist

and vapor into the air. Any walk on the beach or visit to Ecola State Park can become an encounter with these magnificent creatures, especially during peak migration times in early spring and winter. Bring your binoculars and check the rocks for basking sea lions and don’t be surprised to find that seals are enjoying a little people watching, too.

Have an Elk Encounter

Visitors to Cannon Beach often encounter herds of Roosevelt Elk, calmly grazing in meadows or meandering through the forest. Elk are most frequently seen in early mornings and late evenings during the quiet seasons. Check the meadows at Ecola State Park

or grassy areas of Les Shirley Park along the north shore of Ecola Creek. A nearby side trip for wildlife watchers is the Jewel Meadows Wildlife Area in the foothills of the Coast Range, a refuge for Roosevelt Elk. Large herds are often seen from the four viewing areas along State Highway 202.

See Geological Wonders

Oregon’s sea stacks are remarkable geological formations, millions of years old. Sea stacks, including Haystack Rock, are the result of ancient continent-building lava flows to the sea. Hardening into basalt and after millions of years of dropping sea levels and erosion, these dramatic formations were sculpted

into their present form. These sea stacks are outstanding bird watching locations, providing habitat for nesting sea birds. Bring binoculars, but don’t attempt to climb these federally protected areas. They are closed to public access as part of the Oregon Islands National Wildlife Refuge.

Enjoy a Rainforest Retreat

Some of the world’s tal lest and toughest trees reach to the heavens in the Pacific Northwest coastal rainforest. Forests near the ocean are dominated by one of nature’s toughest customers, the Sitka

Spruce that can stand up to the coast’s lashing windstorms. Western Hemlock and Western Red Cedar also grow in this land of the giants. The forest floor is covered with thick layers of moss and this habitat is home to a wide variety of woodland birds and wildlife. Ecola State Park offers easy hiking trails through this unique eco-system.

TopTips:1 Learn about marine life from the Haystack Rock Awareness Program.

2 Watch for elk at Ecola State Park or along Ecola Creek.

3 View nesting puffins on Haystack Rock during the spring and summer.

A Culture of Conservation

The preservation and conservation of natural resources and outdoor recreation areas is a community

vision in Cannon Beach. For more than 25 years, the Haystack Rock Awareness Program in Cannon Beach has worked to protect the community’s iconic natural wonder, Haystack Rock, with its colorful tidepools and annual nesting colony of Tufted Puffins. The City also recently purchased 800 acres of forestland adjacent to the community's watershed for preservation. Most recently, the City dedicated the newest portion of the Cannon Beach Trail. The new portion of the trail is a paved pathway that runs from the Ecola Creek Bridge, along the creek to Second Street, where it connects to a gravel trail encircling the community's former water treatment lagoons. These areas are popular for birdwatching and

river otters are frequently spotted in the creek and lagoons. At the south end of the lagoon loop, the trail passes through a Sitka Spruce forest reserve, finally emerging on Monroe Street. Currently, the City is exploring extending

the trail at both ends. A non-profit Friends of the Trail committee has been actively involved in bringing the vision of the Cannon Beach Trail to reality, one of several groups working toward a common vision within the community.

Hit the Trail

Whether you enjoy an easy scenic walk or a rugged hike of several miles, Cannon Beach offers access to some of the Northwest’s most scenic views and a wide diversity of wildlife. Hikers can traverse coastal rainforest where some of the world’s tallest trees tower over your head. Meander through wildflower covered meadows, pass through wetland habitats or walk miles of uninterrupted beach. Many of the best hikes can be found in Ecola State Park and Oswald West State Park. Ecola State Park is located just north of the city limits and offers a two-mile hiking trail leading from the Ecola viewpoint to Indian Beach. At Indian Beach, the Tillamook Head National Recreation Trail follows the western edge of Tillamook Head through coastal rainforest, six miles to Seaside. At Oswald West State Park, about 10 minutes south of Cannon Beach, a short paved trail from the main parking area leads to Short Sands Beach, a popular surfing location. Other hikes include a 3.8-mile trail to the 1661-foot

Cannon Beach’s oceanfront resorts range from nationally acclaimed luxury accommodations to those offering casual, family-friendly comforts, many featuring panoramic views that include iconic Haystack Rock. On the oceanfront, just south of Haystack Rock are two of Cannon Beach’s most celebrated resorts, Stephanie Inn and The Ocean Lodge. Stephanie Inn is one of only four resorts in Oregon that was included in Conde

Nast Traveler magazine’s 2012 Gold List of the world’s best resorts and was named one of the 500 best hotels in the world by Travel+Leisure magazine. Stephanie Inn combines the charm and casual elegance of a New England country inn with the sophistication of a boutique resort hotel. Your stay includes complimentary breakfast buffet, an afternoon wine gathering and nightcap service. They also offer four-star dining and spa services on site.

The Ocean Lodge is a modern interpretation of a 1940’s lodge resort with all the modern amenities. The lobby welcomes guests with the warmth of massive Douglas Fir beams and beautiful reclaimed and repurposed hardwood floors, all of which are anchored by a massive two-story river-rock wood-burning fireplace. All guestrooms feature fireplaces, some have Jacuzzi tubs and included with your stay is a light breakfast including a delicious assortment of pastries, fruit, yogurt, cereal and more.

The Hallmark Resort is the closest resort to Haystack Rock, perched on the hillside just north of Cannon Beach’s famous landmark. The vibrant ar t community in Cannon Beach showcases the work of top professional artists working in many styles and media.

Over a dozen galleries feature the work of local artists, emerging talent of Northwest painters and some of the country's most celebrated sculptors. Wander through the galleries for inspiring art in many forms including painting, sculpture, glass, jewelry, ceramics, photography and functional art.

Local Artists

They paint the inspiring scenery. They transform molten glass into elegant and colorful forms. They sculpt and photograph and combine all sorts of materials to create fine works of art. This community immersed in art is home to many successful artists;

Cannon Beach is known as one of the Northwest's top art destinations, offering opportunities to see some of the country's best-known sculptors, as well as local painters, live glass-blowing and much more.

some who have helped define Cannon Beach as one of the Northwest’s best art towns. Jeffrey Hull is one example. The Cannon Beach artist has captured the beauty of his surroundings for over 30 years. Known for his watercolors that portray the many moods of the Pacific Northwest coast in remarkable detail, Jeff also now works in oils. For over 20 years he has displayed his work at Jeffrey Hull Gallery where you can see his original paintings and limited-edition prints. Look for another of Cannon Beach’s most enduring artists in the whimsical building at the corner of Third Street and Hemlock, where you'll find the studio and gallery of Bill Steidel, an integral part of the Cannon Beach arts community since the 1970s. His works reflect a love for nature, birds and a fantastical imagination within a world of dragons and storybook-like characters. You can

watch artists at work at Icefire Glassworks, the working glassblowing studio of Jim Kingwell and Suzanne Kindland. Icefire has also been a Cannon Beach fixture since the 1970s. You will find a wide variety of local artists at White Bird Gallery. White Bird has been a Cannon Beach arts institution since 1971, specializing in fine art and craft by many successful local, regional and newly emerging artists. Grand Kettlewell and Kersti Hamann began showing paintings and ceramics at the gallery when it first opened and are back since the re-opening last year. They also feature encaustics by Susan Simon, oil paintings from Deborah DeWit and Allyn Cantor’s mixed media works often combining oils, acrylics, thread, fabric and leaves. Cannon Beach Gallery in Midtown is operated by the non-profit Cannon Beach Arts Association with monthly changing exhibitions often showcasing local artists. Sesame and Lilies features a large selection of seascapes and birds by local artist Diane Speakman. Other local artists to look for include painter and sculptor Michael Tieman at Haystack Gallery, contemporary painter

Sculpture

The ancient art form of sculpture is showcased both in Cannon Beach galleries and on its street corners. Galleries represent the work of some of the most successful sculptors in the country along with local and regional artists whose work is cast in bronze, carved in wood or molded in clay and fired. You’ll find the work of more than 20 nationally known sculptors who create work in a wide variety of styles and subject matter. Look closely at David Crawford’s bronze horses and figures and you’ll find many whimsical details and moving parts. Carol Gold’s human figures and animals are minimalistic and

graceful. Joshua Tobey’s bears and other animals lean toward realist representations yet capture a comical expressiveness. Also look for Nano Lopez’s colorful and whimsical creatures incorporating organic textures and human-made objects. Northwest By Northwest Gallery features the work of several of the region’s top sculptors including Georgia Gerber, known for creating Rachel

the Pig at the Pike Place Market in Seattle and other public works at the Mercer Island Library, Washington Park Zoo and Pioneer Courthouse Square in Portland. Northwest By Northwest also features work by two other artists whose work is displayed publicly in Cannon Beach, Wayne Chabre and Steve Jensen. They also represent acclaimed Native American artist Lillian Pitt, whose works include bronze, ceramic

and cast glass sculpture. Haystack Gallery features figurative bronze sculpture by Cannon Beach artist

Michael T ieman and abstract wildlife sculptures by Ned Block,

who is new to the gal lery. Painting

Their styles range from detailed realist scenes to bold abstracts and exciting contemporary and impressionist visions. The painters featured in Cannon Beach galleries promise to inspire any art lover. Local artists like Jeffrey Hull capture the beautiful scenery of the Oregon Coast, regional artists like Chuck Gumpert push the boundaries of art with bold abstract works and some of the nation’s top artists, like Steve Hanks, render scenes with remarkable realism. Ceramic Arts

Modern artists continue to experiment and expand on one of civilization’s oldest art forms. At House of the Potter, Chris Johnson's hand-thrown stoneware pottery includes functional and decorative one-of-a-kind pieces. The gallery also features brightly glazed and textured platters by Matthew Patton. White Bird Gallery features the work of several ceramic artists. Cannon Beach resident George Vetter photographs the beauty of Cannon Beach and scenes from across the country.

If you or someone in your party prefers a meal with a more meat and potato style, that’s not a problem. Visitors will find a fair number of places to enjoy a great steak. With classic steakhouse style, the Driftwood keeps it simple with hand-cut steaks done without frills served on a sizzling stainless platter. At Lumberyard Rotisserie & Grill, dig in to a spice rubbed and grilled Black Angus steak with home style mashed potatoes and Madeira sauce or choose the Waygu top sirloin. If you want your steak and seafood too, top it with warm buttered crab. Wayfarer offers a grilled filet mignon with a classic glace de viande and a Waygu Porterhouse topped with garlic bacon compound butter.
