This year’s Festival is one of the most

diverse ever. Yes, there are lots of names

you will recognise. But equally there is a

whole cast of new thought-leaders and

creative visionaries to inspire you.

No matter what your background or interest, we can guarantee a packed week of talks, discussions, awards, galas, sun, fun, workshops, networking and a wonderfully

diverse range of activities that will nourish your creative soul and invigorate your professional mind. Cannes Lions represents a microcosm of the global creative industries, and it’s possible for each delegate to create the perfect Festival experience.

INsIde The PalaIsThe Palais des Festivals is the beating heart of Cannes Lions. It is the Palais that houses the Award Shows, the superstar speakers, the once-in-a-lifetime learning experiences and the world’s greatest collection of creative work in marketing communications. The sun may well be shining outside, but if you don’t step inside the Palais you are simply missing the point of Cannes.

It is in the Palais – secreted away in dark rooms – that all of the Jury members are gathered to debate and decide on who will win this year’s highest accolades for creativity. They will emerge, bleary-eyed, in time for each of the Awards Shows in the Grand Audi to reward truly outstanding work from across the world.

aROUNd The CITYWith the Palais bursting with activity, 2015 sees the Festival stretching beyond its walls to include the first ever Cannes Lions Beach. Meeting new people is easy in Cannes, but the Beach makes it even simpler with regular networking events and special sessions to start and close the daytime activities. Wake Up With The Economist features many of the world’s most successful CMOs discussing what creativity means to them. And the Sundowner Session is a new format designed to deliver a pocket-sized summary of each day.

CaNNes lIONs aT NIGhT For four nights of the week, the Grand Audi becomes the setting for the spectacular Awards Shows. This is where Lion-winning work – the Bronze, Silver, Gold and Grand Prix – is recognised and celebrated with over 2,000 people packed in to the world-famous theatre.

As the day winds down, the Cannes Connect Bar –complete with rooftop view of the French Riviera – is the ideal spot to enjoy an ice-cold Heineken before diving into the evening’s entertainment.

Throughout the week, the Palais’ beautiful theatres – The Grand Audi and The Debussy – will host speakers delivering insights and inspiration to move the stoniest of hearts and re-energise even the most jaded of creatives. Every year, Cannes Lions host truly world-class presenters. And this year there are plenty of big names, including former US Vice President Al Gore; self-styled

‘AntiChrist Superstar’ Marilyn Manson; the 25 year old founder of Snapchat Evan Spiegel; Seinfeld alumni and Veep star Julia Louis-Dreyfus; and a gentleman called Tim Berners-Lee who invented a little something known as the World Wide Web.

These sessions will no doubt prove popular but the sessions rated highest by delegates are often somewhat less predictable. Last year it was Forsman & Bodenfors talking about the surprising creative organisation behind their work for Volvo Trucks and Wendy Clark explaining

how The Coca-Cola Company is getting to grips with social media. By all means see the recognised geniuses, but be sure to check out the less obvious corners of this year’s Talks programme, all of which can be seen on page 98 and in the Cannes Lions App.

Of course, the Palais is not only about the main stage Talks and the Awards Shows; Forums offer a deeper dive into specific themes, including talent, music and independent agencies. There is a wide array of Masterclasses on offer, where advertising creatives share the personal insights and stories that can only come from having been there and done it. Workshops are practical lessons designed to leave you with an improved knowledge base and some practical new skills.

And there is more: hundreds of national winners fighting to win the seven global Young Lions Competitions; the widest range of training programmes ever offered and a whole floor dedicated to presenting the shortlisted winners in every category.

But how can you make the most of your time in Cannes with so much going on? Use the Cannes Lions App to build your own personal schedule by favouriting Talks and Events. Make sure to sample widely, but perhaps most importantly, don’t neglect the Work. Presented as never before, in this exhibition on Level -1 there is surely something to inspire everyone.

Alongside official Cannes Lions events, there are countless further activities open to delegates. Ipsos, IPG and Spotify are just some of the organisations running events for delegates throughout the week along the length of the Croisette. The Cannes Lions App details them all under ‘Cannes Extra’.

This year, the Opening Gala on the Carlton Beach will kick-start the Festival on Monday rather than its traditional spot on Tuesday. And five days later on Saturday (June 27), finish off your Festival experience in style at the Closing Gala, before heading home to put your newfound inspiration into action.

Read on for a more detailed guide to where to go and what to do during your time at Cannes Lions.

“It’s over the top, it’s awe- inspiring. It’s all these wonderful things. We have real rockstars here, we have media moguls, tech titans, brand gurus, we have all these layers and now this Festival is the most important creative festival in the world.” david droga – Droga5

WHY WE COME TO CANNES LIONS?

“There is no room in the world I would rather be in than this room right now.”BONO

“We are at the beginning of a new Golden age of advertising, so let’s challenge ourselves every time we face a new blank creative canvas and ask these questions: are we approaching it with the wisdom to start with something true? do we have the humility to consider why anyone would care? and are we bringing the creativity to make our brands matter?”Marc Pritchard – P&G

“This community can challenge stereotypes… If we change the stereotypes, we change the culture. If we change the audience here, we change the power in the world.” sheryl sandberg - Facebook

“sitting on a beanbag does not make you creative. That’s the first piece of advice I can offer.” sir John hegarty – BBH

“You have to push yourself to want to be bigger, to want to be harder, to push yourself to the very edge of what almost become unthinkable... the desire to go so far you fall on the floor for the sake of the idea.”Colleen decourcy – W+K

“Cannes lions is the main event. everyone wants to win. anyone who says different is a liar, mad, or destined for sainthood.”John O’Keeffe – WPP

“If you’ve ever judged here, you’ll know that 90% of what you spend late nights going through isn’t really worth talking about. But of course we’re lucky to be here and see the 10% of our industry that represents the gold standard.“Chris Clarke – DigitasLBi

“If people are saying you’re wrong, it’s probably a good sign that you’re a genius.” steve stoute – Translation

Hundreds of Young Lions apply every year to be part of the Cannes Lions Academy. The Academy Zone is where the successful ones spend their time; getting close up sessions with

some of the industry’s most inspirational talents; guided specialist teaching and a uniquely curated experience of the best the Festival has to offer. Based in the Espace Riviera, next door to the Palais,

the Academy Zone is reserved for Academy delegates. But please don’t let that stop you asking for a tour if you are interested in applying or sending your own up-and-coming talent next year.

It has only taken 62 years, but finally Cannes Lions has its own private beach, exclusive for delegates. Dedicated to networking, The Beach is a relaxed space for meeting,

entertaining and enjoying a slice of the French Riviera lifestyle. It’s here delegates will be able to find world-class CMOs discussing creativity with The Economist, and have the chance to meet and mingle with some of this year’s Lions winners.

As the afternoon sessions finish in the Palais, Time Inc hosts a carefully crafted report of the

day for those who want the short version of what happened where and who said what.

And inbetween, the agenda is all yours for whatever you want it to be.

There is a members’ area for Gold and Platinum delegates—The BeachClub—and a restaurant and bar for all delegates to enjoy.

Due to capacity limits, the Cannes Lions Beach may need to restrict delegate numbers at busy times.

The official Cannes Lions programme is where the spotlight falls

during Cannes. There are though hundreds of smaller, more specialist events happening throughout the week; many of which are also open to delegates. These ‘Cannes Extra’ talks, parties and get-togethers can all be found listed in the Cannes Lions App and at www.canneslions.com.

It is along the Croisette that the biggest players present the most exciting extra-curricular activities. The trailblazing YouTube Beach will be rivalled by The Facebook beach for the first time this year, as well as by numerous beach parties and lunch time gatherings. During the day, the Havas Café has been delivering its own specially curated content programme for many years on the lawn of Le Grand Hotel.

Ipsos, Spotify and IPG have also already announced their own delegate-accessible programmes and there will be plenty more to follow after this print programme has gone to press.

The grand ‘Palace’ hotels along the Croisette will likewise be packed with industry stars. Not least The Carlton Terrace; where the deal-per-square-metre must rival anywhere in the world during most evenings of the Festival week.

And, of course, no guide to The Croisette would be complete without a nod to the legend that is The Gutter Bar. This is where just-won Lions are found under tables the morning after; where legends make reputations for much more than their creative work; and serendipity leads to friendships that cross all kinds of day-time boundaries. Enter at your own risk.

IPGHotel Martinez Grand HyattMichael Roth will host IPG’s fifth annual women’s leadership breakfast on 24 June.
