SCHERSON is currently the Frank Hovorka Professor of Chemistry at Case Western Reserve University. He received a PhD in chemistry from The University of California at Davis under the late Joel Keizer working in the area of nonlinear, non-equilibrium thermodynamics. His interests in interfacial science prompted him to spend the next four years as a postdoctoral research associate in the laboratories of John Newman at UC Berkeley, Phil Ross at the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory, Ernest B. Yeager at Case Western Reserve University, and finally at the Fritz Haber Institute in Berlin, Germany, working both with Heinz Gerischer and Dieter Kolb, from whom he acquired both theoretical and experimental knowledge in the general area of physical electrochemistry which ultimately shaped his academic career. In 1983, he joined the Chemistry faculty at Case Western Reserve University, where he is currently Director of The Ernest B. Yeager Center for Electrochemical Sciences. His research interests include the development and implementation of linear and nonlinear spectroscopic and structural techniques for the in situ monitoring of interfacial electrochemical events, including operating devices, such as fuel cells, batteries, and electrosynthetic reactors. Daniel Scherson has over 240 journal publications, seven U.S. patents, and hundreds of conference presentations. He has been a member of ECS since 1976. He received a number of prestigious awards, including the IBM Faculty Development Award, David C. Grahame Award of the Physical Electrochemistry Division of ECS, The Faraday Medal of the Electrochemistry Groups of the Royal Chemical Society, The Japan Society for the Promotion of Science Fellowship, the Alexander von Humboldt Senior Fellowship Award and the Vittorio de Nora-Diamond Shamrock Postdoctoral Fellowship. He has held the position of Associate Editor of the Journal of The Electrochemical Society (1997-2007), and Petr V anýsek received his undergraduate and graduate degrees in Prague, from the Charles University and the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences, respectively. After graduation, he made the U.S. his home, first as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, then as a Faculty-at-Large at the University of New Hampshire, and then as a tenured faculty at Northern Illinois University. In 2000-2002, Dr. Vanýsek was employed as a principal scientist at ACLARA BioSciences, Inc. in Mountain View, CA, working on the development of new detection schemes in microfluidic systems, data interpretation and instrumentation. At Northern Illinois University, he is a Full Professor of Analytical Chemistry and serves as the Director of Graduate Studies. He is the Treasurer of the Society for Electroanalytical Chemistry and the President of the Federation of Materials Societies. Dr. Vanýsek’s main research interests have been focused on the electrochemical behavior of the interface between two immiscible phases, both on the analytical applications of such interfaces, as well as on achieving a deeper understanding of their atomic- size properties. He is using synchrotron X-rays to probe these interfaces. He has also developed particular expertise in analytical instrumentation and in electrochemical impedance techniques. His research spans both sides of electrochemical interests, the “wet” in electroanalysis and the “dry” in the materials science area. Professor Vanýsek has authored or co- authored more than 80 journal publications, holds two patents, and has edited and co- edited several books and a monograph on the electrochemistry of liquid/liquid interfaces. He has been a member of ECS since 1986 and was first involved for many years on the executive committee of the Chicago Section. He has been Vice-Chair and Chair of the Sensor Division and Secretary-Treasurer of the Physical and Electroanalytical Division. At the Society level, he has served on the Technical Affairs Committee, the New Technology Subcommittee, and is the Past Candidate for President FERNANDO GARZON has had the great fortune to pursue a career in energy science and tech- nology, for all of his professional life. His graduate research at the University of Pennsylvania was centered on the funda- mental properties of ceramic ionic conductors in the beta″ alumina family. His postdoctoral appointment with Dr. Ian Raistrick at Los Alamos National Laboratory was originally focused on supercapacitor materials. The discovery of high temperature superconductivity redirected his research to the fundamental growth and characterization of these new materials. Dr. Garzon’s experience in thin film ceramic materials growth and past background in solid-state electrochemistry enabled him to develop new classes of ceramic gas sensors. These mixed potential devices detect oxygen, hydrogen, and combustion emissions such as hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide, nitric oxides, and sulfur dioxides. He has worked for many years with the transportation and power industries to improve energy efficiency and reduce emissions. He also became actively involved in the multidisciplinary Los Alamos fuel cell program in the early ‘90s. He was able to contribute to the understanding of the degradation mechanisms of polymer fuel cells by adapting modern materials analysis techniques for the characterization of membrane-electrode assemblies. Dr. Garzon is currently studying the effects of common fuel/air contaminants on polymer fuel cells. He also leads fundamental studies of high temperature proton conducting electrolytes. Dr. Garzon has been a Society member since 1986, a past Chairperson of the HTM Division and served on many ECS and DOE committees. He has co-authored over a hundred publications and seven patents. hariklia (lili) DeliGianni is aResearcher at IBM’sThomas J. WatsonResearch Center inYorktown Heights,NY. Dr. Deligianni’sresearch interestsinclude the investi-gation of earthabundantmaterialsfor

thin film solar cells and the integration ofsolar energy with the electric grid. LiliDeligianniisusingelectrodepositionforthesynthesisofearthabundantsemiconductorsthat are used as light absorbing materials.These game changing technologies can beused to fabricate flexible and rigid solarpanels.Her goal is to continue to innovatedeveloping new materials and advancedconcepts for solar energy conversion andstorage.

Previously, Lili Deligianni played aleading role in the successful introductionof electrochemical processes in the solderbump technology. The process became thestandardintheelectronicindustryforjoiningofsiliconchipstopackages.Forhertechnicalachievements on the electroplated solderbumpprocessdevelopment,shereceivedanIBM Corporate Technical Excellence AwardandanOutstandingInnovationAwardin2001.

Dr. Deligianni co-invented thecopper electrodeposition process for on-chip interconnects. The introduction ofelectroplated copper wire on silicon wafershasrevolutionizedthecapabilityofcomputerchips.Theinventorsofthepatentassociatedwiththecopperinterconnectprocessreceivedthe 2006 Inventor of the Year Award ofthe New York Intellectual Property LawAssociation.That sameyear,Dr.Deligiannireceived an IBM Corporate Award for hertechnical contributions on the ElectroplatedInterconnection Structures on IntegratedCircuitChips.

In the early 2000s Dr. Deligiannidemonstrated the first integrated on-chipmicro-electro-mechanicalswitchforwirelessapplications. This technology currently isgettingtractionforthemanufactureofchipswithintegratedwirelesstransceivers.

Lili Deligianni received a PhD degreein 1988 in chemical engineering from theUniversity of Illinois inUrbana-ChampaignandhasbeenwithIBMsincethat time.SheisanelectedmemberoftheIBMAcademyofTechnology. Dr. Deligianni has co-authored65 journalpublicationsand129patentsandpatentapplications.

Lili Deligianni is actively involved inECS.ShehasbeenamemberoftheECSfor27years,firstasastudentandcontinuingasaprofessional.Shehasco-organizednumeroussymposia and editedmany proceedings and

curtiS F. holmeS received his under-graduate degree inchemistry from Loui-siana State Universityand his PhD inphysical chemistryfrom Indiana Uni-versity. His doctoralresearch was in thefields of irreversiblethermodynamics and

statisticalmechanics.After completing his education he entered

the U.S.Army. He spent one year as a FirstLieutenant in a research institute and thenservedasaCaptaininVietnam,wherehewasawardedtheBronzeStarMedal.

Dr.Holmes joinedWilsonGreatbatchLtd.(nowGreatbatch,Inc.)in1976.In1980hewasnamedVicePresident,TechnologyandhasheldthepositionsofVicePresidentofTechnologyandSeniorVicePresident.Hisresponsibilitiesincludedprocessandproductquality,regulatoryaffairs, reliability, intellectual property, andresearchanddevelopment.

In 1999Dr.Holmeswas named PresidentofafirmacquiredbyGreatbatchinColumbia,MD.Thatsubsidiary,sincerelocatedtoMexico,produced feedthroughs, coated electrodetips, and other components for implantablebiomedical devices and batteries. In 2001 hebecame Group Vice President, Components,with responsibilities for divisions of thecompanyinClarence,NY,CarsonCityNV,andColumbiaMD.

In2004he returned toWesternNewYorkto become the company’s Chief TechnologyOfficer. Dr. Holmes retired from fullemploymentatGreatbatchin2006andservesas a consultant to the company. He remainsactiveintechnicalandeducationalactivitiesofthecompany.Hehasauthoredover55technicalpapers and six book chapters and holds threeU.S.patents.

Dr. Holmes has participated in a varietyof research and development projects fordevelopment of advanced batteries forimplantable biomedical devices. Amongthe projects he has participated in are theimprovement of efficiency and reliabilityof lithium/iodine pacemaker batteries, thedevelopment of medium-rate batteries forimplantable drug delivery systems andneurostimulators,andthedevelopmentofhigh-ratelithium/silvervanadiumoxidebatteriesfortheimplantabledefibrillator.

A frequent participant in scientificconferences, Dr. Holmes has organized orchairedtechnicalsessionsforECS,theAnnualConference on Battery Applications andAdvances, and several of the InternationalMeetings on Lithium Batteries. He haspresented invited papers in several meetingsofECS.

It is an honor and a privilege to serveECS. I was a graduate student when I firstjoinedECS27yearsago.ECSisawonderfulcommunity of world class scientists andengineers from both the academic andindustrial sectors, which keeps re-inventingitself though the dissemination of newknowledge. It is at ECS meetings and inECS publications where the most relevantscientificandtechnologytopicsarediscussedandwherenewresearchideasaregenerated.ECS offers a great service to society byadvancing the science and technology. TheECSmembershipisaveryvibranttechnicalandscientificcommunity.TheECSmemberswhovolunteertheirtimeandtheoutstandingECSstaffareaverydedicatedandcommittedgroup of people with a single mission topromotenewelectrochemicalandsolidstatescienceandtechnologythroughtheSociety’smeetings, publications, and the manydifferentprograms that theSocietyoffers toitsmembers.

This isaveryexciting time tobepartofthe ECS leadership and I cannot hide myenthusiasm.Thisisatimewhereinnovationin energy and water systems, in healthcareand in information technology promise totransform our society, reduce poverty, andadvance our standard of living. These aretremendous challenges of our time, whichwe can turn into great opportunities. ECS’sroleiscentraltothedisseminationofthisnewknowledge,whichisanenablertoinnovationand to developing new technologies toimprove ourworld.As Secretary of ECS, Iwillsupportandpromotewithnewinitiativesthe key Society’s objectives to advance thescience and technology, to promote andencourage new research, to educate ourmembers in both the fundamentals and thetechnology aspects, and to empower ourmemberstoadvancetheircareers.

Candidate’s Statement

Overthelastdecade,thedisseminationofscientificinformationhasbecomealucrative,highly competitive, and indeed aggressivebusiness where the ultimate goal is tomaximize a statistical parameter known astheimpactfactor,regardedincertaincirclesas ameasure of the prominence of a givenjournalinitsfield.Thisnewenvironmenthasforcedprofessionalsocietiessuchasours toreassess their marketing strategies withoutcrossing the ethicalboundaries societies arebound to uphold.After long, and at times,heated deliberations of which I had theprivilege of joining, ECS decided as a firststeptoreorganizethejournalsalongthetwogeneral areas of electrochemistry and solidstatescienceandtechnology.Thisplanslatedforimplementationin2012willallowfortheimpactfactorofECSjournalstobecomparedonafairbasiswithpublicationsinvolvingthesame topicswith thoseof other societies orcommercialenterprises.

This new journals structure calls forthe appointment of independent TechnicalEditors representing each and every area ofinterestoftheDivisionsofECS.Weenvisionas a second step in this venture for allmembersoftheEditorialBoardstoestablishclose communication with the Divisions todevelopeffectivemeansofcapturingmaterialpresented at themeetings for publication inECS journals. I am particularly encouragedby the key role Divisions have played inthe organization of symposia by providingboth leadership and expertise through theirvolunteer members, which have criticallycontributed to the continued growth of ourbiannualmeetings.

Proposals, which I fully endorse, arenowbeingconsideredfor thepublicationofspecial topical volumes in the two journalsinvolvingmembersof theDivisionasguestEditorsusingmaterialpresentedatsymposiaas a basis.Themembers ofECS should beremindedofthefactthatourSocietyisoneoftheonlyremainingprofessionalorganizationthatcontrols itsownscientificandtechnicalpublications.TomaintainthisuniquepositionwithoutjeopardizingthefinancialviabilityofECS, demands careful planning, especiallynow that a major source of income, pagecharges, has been eliminated since this pastsummer.

This is the time for every member ofECS to contribute his and her share to thisworthy endeavor by submitting their bestwork to the ECS journals and assisting the

Technical Editors in a timely fashion withthe evaluationofmanuscripts. It ismyfirmintent to support ongoing efforts by ECSto continue sponsoring and/or cosponsoringnational and international events in allcorners of the world and thus promote andfoster scientific and technical activities inelectrochemistryandsolidstatescience.TheElectrochemical Society should strengthenits leadership role toward advancing ourknowledge in such critical areas as energyconversion and energy storage and theoverall sustainability of our planet, whichpose formidablechallenges toscientistsandengineers. ECS has been an important partof the professional life of many membersand nonmembers, including my own. Eachyear, new and interesting topics in energy,electrochemistry,andsolid-statetechnologiesappear in ECS meetings and publications.TheevolutionoftheSocietyhasbeenguidedby the efforts and wisdom of past ECSleaders. It is an honor and privilege to beconsideredforthisposition.

ChairoftheCouncilofSections.From2004to2008,heservedontheExecutiveCommitteeas the Secretary of the Society, overseeingthe operations of ECS headquarters. Hewas closely involved in modifying thefundamental Society documents and ledtheprocessofmerging theConstitutionandBylawsandestablishingthenewBylawsthatareineffecttoday.Healsohelpedtoestablishstudentgroups,includingoneinEurope.AsarepresentativetotheFederationofMaterialsSocieties,hemaintainsthevisibilityofECSatthelegislativefront.

Dr.Vanýsekhasorganizedorco-organizedmany symposia, nine of which generatedsuccessfulproceedingsorECS Transactionsvolumes.Hehasalsowrittenarticlesrelatedto the history of the Sensor Division, thehistoryof theChicagoSection,and the roleof the Council of Sections. The latter wasprepared for the Centennial celebration inPhiladelphia. Additionally, he contributesnotes to Interface and was a co-editor oftwo ECS Transactions volumes publishedfrom ECS sponsored satellite meetings onAdvancedBatteries,Accumulators,andFuelCells.

Candidate’s Statement

Ifeelextremelyhumbledtobenominatedas a candidate for a Vice-President of ourSociety. I know that throughmy pastworkfortheSociety,IhaveearnedyourtrustandrespectandnowIhopetowinyourvotesforthis leadership position. The job of aVice-President is multifaceted and, during thefour year term, it calls for different dutieswhile consistently requiring a high level of

dedication.Iamwillingandable to takeonthispositionandwouldbehonoredtoserveourSocietyinthisway.

Membership and future membershipis the lifeblood of the society. We are aninternational society with over 50% ofour members coming from outside of theU.S. With the help of the MembershipCommitteeandotherinitiatives,thevisibilityof the Society and member desirability forparticipationwillonly increase. I amhappyto see the steadily increasing numbers ofStudentChapters.Localstudentinvolvementis an excellent prelude to professionalinvolvement.TwoimportantgoalsthatIseeforourSocietyareenhancingstudentinterestin the physical sciences, which may fosterlife-longmembership,andprovidingscienceeducation to the general public, particularlyon contemporary energy issues where oursocietyisveryinvolved.WehaveastrengththroughourrelationshipwiththeFederationofMaterialsSocietiesbecausetheyhavetheopportunity to talk to lawmakers and helpthemshapeviewsonscienceandtechnology.

During the time that I have been part ofthegoverningbodyof theSociety,wehavemade steps to eliminate the page chargesforpublicationsandmadeiteasytopublishonline ECS Transactions. The biannualmeetingsprosperandweseerecordnumberof participants. As a Vice-President, I willsee that this momentum continues and Iwill support the activities that the Societydoes well. The ECS-sponsored communitywebsite,Redcat,™madeitsdebutinBoston.This new sitewill bring new opportunities,and interest for the digital generation, andprovideworld-wideaccessibility.

Alongwithgreatsuccesses,therewillalsobechallenges.Ihavehadtheopportunitytodeal with such instances in my capacity asthe Secretary of the Society and I am fullypreparedtoaddressthemagain,promptlyandeffectively.

Ihavealwayshadaninterestinplanningand organizing symposia for the SensorandPAEDDivisions,withwhich I aligned,one on the dry side and the other on thewet. The Divisions work extremely wellin planning and securing symposia. Theprocess that leads to successful symposia isgood but needs streamlining. Dr. Holmes has been an active memberof the Society since 1977. He has servedas Secretary, Vice-Chair, and Chair of theBattery Division of the Society. He servedfor five years as Chair of the PublicationCommitteeandwasactiveinthedevelopmentofECS Transactions as the replacement fortheproceedingsvolumesformerlydistributedat technicalmeetings.Hehas servedon theTechnical Affairs Committee and the NewTechnology Subcommittee and currentlyserves on the Finance Committee of theSociety.

Dr. Holmes served as a member of theCardiac Rhythm Management Committeeof theAssociation for theAdvancement ofMedical Instrumentation. He was elected aFellowoftheAmericanInstituteforMedicalandBiologicalEngineeringin1996,andwaselectedanECSFellowin2008.

IamhonoredtohavebeennominatedasacandidateforSecretaryoftheSociety.Ihavebeenamembersince1977andhavegreatlybenefitedfrommyassociationwithit.

From 1992 through 1998 I served asSecretary, Vice-Chair, and Chair of theBatteryDivision.DuringthattimeIbecamefamiliarwiththeworkingsoftheSocietyandwassuccessfulininteractingwiththeSocietyofficers,staff,andfellowDivisionalleaders.

I have also been an active technicalparticipant in society activities. I havepresented many papers over the years andhaveorganizedandchairedseveraltechnicalsessions.

In addition to my professional dutiesat Greatbatch, Inc., I have been involvedwith the State University of New York atBuffalo, where I served as a biomaterialsadjunctfacultyassociateandamemberofacommitteeorganizedtoprovidecertificationfor biomedical engineering students. Theseacademic activities have provided me withanappreciationfortheroleoftheSocietyinservingstudentmembers,andIwillcontinueto encourage student participation in ourmeetingsandpublications.

Iwill continue to support the interactionof the Society with other professionalorganizations.IamamemberoftheAmericanChemical Society, The Association for theAdvancement of Medical Instrumentation,and the American Institute for Medicaland Biological Engineering, so I have anappreciation for the workings of our sisterprofessionalorganizations.

IbelievethattheSocietyhasagreatfuture.We have a robust Society full of memberswhoenhancethetechnicalandorganizationalfunctioning of ECS. We have an excellentand dedicated staff at Society headquarters.We have a 100+ year history of service toourmembersand the international technicalcommunity.IwouldbeproudtocontinuemyservicetothesocietyifelectedtothepositionofSecretary.
