Tumor
Means “swelling” Come to refer to abnormal
growth of tissue. Two types of tumors:
BenignMalignant
Benign
Means “not life threatening”Do not invade other tissues.Do not break apart and spread to
other parts of the body (metastasize)
Can grow really big and become a serious health problem, possibly life threatening.
Premalignant
Benign tumors are at greater risk for turning into “cancer” than other tissue.
If they start to “degenerate” then they are called premalignant.
Malignant
Cells dedifferentiate – lose specializations like cilia and axons.
Metastasize Break away from
tumor move through blood stream to other parts of the body
Divide and grow into another cancerous tumor.
Cancer
Testicle Cells in you Lungs!Breast Tissue in your Brain!
Contact Inhibition
Cell to cell contact usually stops cell division, not with cancerous cells.
Oncogenes
Genes control cell division – produce checkpoint proteins.
Mutations can cause cells to go through mitosis too often = tumor.
Growth Factor
Tumor cells either are missing growth factor inhibition or make their own growth factor proteins.
