Last week at the Village Cor-ner in Toronto's Village, I heard anew folk duo Peter and Sunny whostrive for a variety of styles andtypes of music to please all audi-ences. Their foreign songs and ad-libing is something to watch for. Iwas especially captivated by SunnyPeterson, the female member of theduo, whose personality seemed to bub-ble all over.

Peter Grey, the guitarist, wasborn in Scotland and two years agoteamed up with Sunny who was bornin Toronto. They have played clubsin both Toronto and Hamilton. Bothhave had a try at writing music andPeter has written a score for a docu-mentary called "The Villager" and isnow attempting to sell it to the CBC.

It was from Peter that I heardthe sad story of the Village Corner, which is noted as being "Too closeto Yorkville and yet too far". Appar-ently the club is about to go under.Owner Jack Devoretsky has taken agreat financial loss for the past twoyears in trying to keep the club go-ing. Unfortunately the club is too closeto the mainstem of the Village in thesense that the competition is toostrong, and yet too far as it is a fewblocks away from the main stream ofthe passing trade. The real shame ofit all is that it is not just any other, coffee house but a training centre fornew talent where they can try out newroutines and express their views. It isprobably the only folk music coffeehouse in Toronto where musicianscan have a stepping stone before join-ing the union. Last year, about 15 folkenthusiasts helped keep the club openon weekends but the financial losseswere so great that it looks like it willneed a miracle to save the club.

The Stitch In Tyme is a fiveman group striving for an original voc-al sound. Grant Fullerton is the smil-

ing lead guitarist, Bob Murphy the or-ganist and leader, John Yorke plays12 string and rhythm guitar, Pinky ison drums and Don Morris plays bass. The group hails from Nova Scotia andtheir ages range from 19 to 21. WhenI asked them how they would classifytheir music they told me "a little bitof everything". A recording companyheard them on "Music Hop" (CBC-TV)in Halifax and since then they havereleased a record on the Yorkvillelabel (Arc) called "I Got To Get YouInto My Life". The flip is "Dry YourEyes" and was written by Grant.

Michael Sherman played theMousehole last week. Mike's bag ismainly blues///Gordon Lightfoot isnow at the Riverboat and I hope tocatch him for an interview///Did youknow that the Lovin' Spoonful are ona six week holiday for the first timein two years? Zal Yanovsky took timeout to visit his mother in Toronto andpromised me an interview on his nexttime round.

ELEVENTH COMMANDMENTBOWS IN FEB. - CKLNDennis LaRochelle, of CKLN Nelson, predictsthat a local group, the Eleventh Commandment,"could be the biggest thing to happen in inter-national pop music". They have a completelydifferent sound, a blend of rhythm and blues,Indian music and jazz. They haven't playedpublicly as yet but from inside reports, whenthey do break out in February, they'll be a groupto watch. Also from Dennis comes the resultsof the "Battle Of Bands", a two day affair

which drew over two thousand fans. First prizewent to The Vibrants from Courdelaine, Idaho, with second prize going to Edmonton's Grahamand The Wafers. Third prize was picked up byThe Epics from Kimberley B.C. Dennis alsoreminds us to keep an ear out for The Epics'waxing of "Walk In The Rain". We don't haveany label or distrib info on this release. Trail'sChevelle '5' are back on the dance circuit oncemore, after a six month absence and The People, from West Kootenay, are one of the newestgroups showing promise. They'll be setting upa tour of the interior in the near future.

Life on the British music sce-ne is very seasonal these days. Al-most all the top stars are involved inthe British children's favourite sea-sonal past -time "Christmas Panto -mines". This is a very special showin which a star will costume like Cin-derella & Co. (ie: CLIFF RICHARDat the LONDON PALLADIUM) or Al-ladin (GERRY & PACEMAKERS atSouthampton) and sing their hit songsand songs especially written for theproduction. Most of these pantominescontinue until February but some goon until Easter. The shows are allover the country but most are in Lon-don. As a result there are very fewpersonal appearances going on aroundBritain these days.

BRIAN EPSTEIN has announ-ced that his SAVILLE THEATRE inLondon will become an exclusive"pop"artist theatre. In other words, Brianwill not stage anymore new musicalsbut rather will mount "pop" show-cases for the teen set which willchange from time to time. This is thevery first of London's theatre's totake this plunge. Already, Brian ismounting highly successful Sundaynight "pop" shows using the best inNEMS ENTERPRISES talent, otherthan the BEATLES, of course, andsome of the Epstein controlled Ameri-can stars.

Well Christmas and all thehustle and bustle is over and we canget back on the hit making track again. One thing that disturbs me is that con-niving old witch Bebe Gee get-ting Elvira Capreese to go along withher in trying to scuttle my contest. Itmakes me want to tie her long hatin a knot.

Did you know there was a Can-adian National Fan Club for the Mon-kees? Yep there is and you can getmore information from Pat Guthrie atBox 1015, Station "B" in Ottawa. Youknow what? I've been made an honour-ary member.

The Kitchen Cinq are havingkind of a tough battle making it on thecharts with their record of "You'll BeSorry Someday". I guess maybe allthose pauses don't go over too well.

Remember me telling you aboutthat big NYC operator who offered theBeatles $500.000 a show for two bigones at Sheas Stadium? Well it couldbe that he'll get a big fat NO fromBeatles manager Brian Epstein.

Now here's some news straightfrom Hollywood. Keep your eye on TheBuffalo Springfield. They've got a nemsingle on the way called "For WhhtIt's Worth". If you listen to lyrics thenyou'll like this one. They're singingabout the teenage scene and it includesa bit about protesting.

A big WELCOME BACK toToronto to Glenn Walters. He sure hasadded life to the nite time Torontoscene. All we have to do now is get

hi:,1 on earlier. I would prefer "BackTo Life" than what they have on now.

There's a group from Reginaknown as Mel West and The Meteorsand they have just released a gas of a

record called "Seventh Saint". Iaged to get a photo of the group, andhere they are. Now all you Meteor fanscan let your pens cool down.

fromKonBelleville. When I saw them, Kim wastrying to beat their big Cadillac todeath with a 2 by 4. Seems the old busdropped its innards on the way home.

You know, if the groups acrossthe nation were really interested ingetting known, they'd really flood thisoffice with photos and news aboutthemselves. The biggest complainersseem to come from British Columbia.I receive a lot of mail from our Pacificprovince and most of them want toknow why there isn't more news andpictures on B.C. groups and artists.I did receive one photo of a groupcalled The Painted Ship. That's all.No story. Nothing. I don't think Bebe'scrystal ball could pickup that message.

Watch out for "His Girl" byThe Guess Who. This group could justhappen internationally again. They'rea groovy group.

A -MEN - NUMBER ONEIN SODNorm Blakely notes that "Cotton Candy AndCarnivals" by localites, the A-Men,reached thenumber one spot on the CJIC chart because ithad sold over 1000 copies in just four days ofrelease. Besides this there is an additional500 on the way. The session was produced byCJIC-TV employee John Holt who travelled toToronto with the boys for the session. Thegroup is made up of Ed Schryer on lead, DaveWilson looks after the bass, rhythm is NickScali, Bob Clarke is on drums and Tim Ryan islead vocalist. They've been playing for sometime at the Teen Centre on Fridays and Satur-days and have acquired a pretty fantastic follow-ing. They specialize in soul and rhythm andblues but this first attempt came out a straightcommercial bit. Both sides are original andwere written by the group. It's on the Algomalabel which is handled by Arc. Anyone wishinga copy should write to Algoma Productions,

Case Road, Sault Ste. Marie. Norm also has

news of the apparent success of the newlyopened Sundown Club which features top localbands and dancing to the small hours.

"SILLY SURVEY" CONTESTGIANT SUCCESS - CJIBJim Yount reports from CJIB ternon, that their"Silly Survey" contest grabbed a great deal ofattention from listeners. The CJIB Survey was

sent out, loaded with mistakes, e.g. "Jerry

Lewis and The Playboys". Vernonites who

found the most mistakes won top albums.

THE FIRST THING I would like toclear up in the minds of my NEW read-ers is the fact that RPM is not a NEWpaper. This weekly has been comingout every week since February 24th.1964. The paper was available topeople in the radio and record tradeup until recently when the number ofconsumer subscribers became so lar ge,that Old Ed: (the editor) thought itwould be a good idea to make the pa-per larger and available to the public.

byElviraCapreese

I say this in case you are thinking ofsubscribing and are worried that thisis another music paper that will getyour money and then go out of busi-ness. Today RPM is read all over theworld. I know this much and hasten totell you that you WILL find that RPMsells out very quickly in the recordstores, and to make sure you get acopy every week, you should take ad-vantage of the current introductoryrate of $5. for one years subscription. You will find a coupon elsewhere inthe paper. Why not mail it today, andwait for your 52 issues to come rightto your door.

I'm very excited about the Can-ada Bill Record Library Contest. Lastweek Bebe Gee and I sat on the phonefor two hours, and Bebe Gee says shehas figured out the answer. Unfortun-ately the staff and families of RPMare not eligible, but Bebe said weshould help the readers along a bit bysneaking some clues into our columns. Her clue was: Bill Will Tell. I haveone for you but don't tell CB....I toldyou. Here it is: Drum and Bugle.

I'VE LOST most of my us-ual readers by now, so I can get intothe meat of my column. Old BusinessDept: I see by last weeks RPM thatRoy Smith of Compo Records in Mon-treal, tells Old Ed: that he hopes OldEd: is "still plugging Canadian tal-ent". Well I WILL ANSWER!!!!YesRoy, THERE IS A SANTA CLAUS!We at RPM feel that we are great pri-' _viledge1 to be operating in Canada andand making our business on Canadians. We are therefore anxious to affordevery opportunity to Canadians to

make their way in this world. We are100% behind Canadian talent, and asCentennial year is here, we would likerecord companies to make the samepledge. Keep up the good work Roy.I'm always anxious to answer yourmany comments.

A MONTREAL DISC JOCKEYshakes as he opens his weekly

RPM and turns to my column. Don'tworry honey, your secret ISN'T safewith me. Keep your eye on this column.

A TORONTO RECORD MAN...has d very guilty look on his face, and the industry is waiting for a "guiltreaction". You'll read a descriptionof this reaction in this column. You'llalso see the results. YOU KNOW IKNOW DON'T YOU????

THERE WILL BE many shake-ups in the record business in the nextmonth or two. You'll see a lot of move-ment. Is is possible that record com-panies are looking to a new era of re-cord selling? Is there a "MadisonAvenue Approach" coming to the re-cord business. I am tellingyou there IS.

WHEN I WROTE UP.... The big"SOUND" show in Toronto, there wasa nice little gossipy bit at the endthat was edited. I just wonder if I re-worded the item, I might get it pastOld Ed: Apparently the groups on stagedidn't know that they were up stagedby a performance later in a knownspaghetti house when two of the "fair-er sex" had an argument about WHATthe fairer sex was. Red isn't my fav-ourite colour either. Oleum

ARE THE PURSE STRINGSslowly drawing closed on that "con-quer the world" operation that JUST..

ISN'T....MAKING the money? Wethink the powers that be are starting tolook at the balance sheet and won-dering if it isn't HE that's UNBAL-ANCED...

I DECIDED TO WEAR MYPICTURE HAT to the wine andcheese party, but due to an OVER-SIGHT, I wasn't invited. To quoteOld Ed:"It was a security precaution."The party will have to go on withoutme. I wish I had been there, but don'tworry I was well represented.

PEOPLE WHO ARE MINGBETS on the local chart arewinning. Either they're GOOD at pre-dicting, or there is something wrong, and one record man is ready to tellthe world ALL!!! That is aboutenough. (Ed: Your usual GREAT col-umn, Miss C. I can see that you haveleft no stone unturned. By the way, when will we hear from you regardingyour Centennial project?)

By Penelope Pentelope

We have a lot of country -likereleases to talk about in this columnso I think I should get right down toit, and give you all the news.

I say country -like because Ireally don't know where to put the newMelbourne release of "Whirlpool" byBambi Lynn. I guess you have to sayit's pop -country. It was written byMontreal's Art Samuels who wrote"Faded Blue Ribbon" and "CrushedRed Rose". That was some time ago,but I'll bet many of you remember therecord. Anyway back to Monti-eal andBambi. The session was cut at StereoSound Studios and George tells me itso happened that Newfoundland's fam-ous trio, Tom, Jim and Garth were intown and they provided the voice back-ground on the record. Well the ses-sion turned out so well that ClaudeSorel has decided to cut it in Frenchto be released on Jupiter.

Speaking of Tom, Jim and Garthwhile in Montreal they cut an old StuPhillips tune "Champlain and St.Lawrence Lines". This is a songabout the first railroad in Canada, theSt. John's to La Prairie Line. LaPrairie is the Expo site. George as-sures me that Tom, Jim and Gartharen't in the race for the Montrealsong.

The Celtic line has been re-duced to $1.98.

Nice to hear from Donn andCindy Reynolds. They've just comeback home after a successful run ofengagements in Ontario's Lakehead. They played the Imperial Holiday Innin Port Arthur and the Blue Swan Innin Fort William. Besides this they ap-peared 6 times on CKPR-TV withGraham andMarian on their "At Home"show as well as "Spectrum 2".

From Hank's House on CKRMin Regina, Hank Secord is holdingdown the midnight to 6 spot with goodcountry music. Hank tells how suc-cessful country artists have been inRegina. The one artist that bombedwas not a Canadian. Well how do youlike that? It certainly puts a feather inthe cap of Canadian country talent.Hank has a lot of words in praise ofCanadian country artists. ThanksCousin Hank. Keep us informed.

I have just got to answer D.D.who wrote me and criticized my friend-liness and rambling style. Well D.D.I really feel that if the new countryfolk are trying to add dignity to coun-try music, they have my support. I canreally hardly picture a chic lady likeMiss Ellie Capreese writing this col-umn (Ed: The plain country folk don'tknow how lucky they are) and talkingup them expose's and jabbering onthat high class plain. I think the sim-ple facts stated in a friendly way arethe best way to get across what ishappening. I always say, "You canlead a horse to water, but you can onlykeep him from drinking for two days".(Ed: I must remember thatil In)
