Camperdown

e celebrated a successful first term of learning at Camperdown College through a range of final week activities. Students who had made exemplary progress in their learning were recognised at end of term Celebration of Learning assemblies, with the presentation of Senior Campus learning awards and Junior Campus students of the term.

Pride, aspiration, attendance and persistence were recurring themes as teachers acknowledged students' efforts and achievements. The end of Term 1 was also celebrated with a colourful Easter Bonnet Parade at the Junior Campus and a staff versus students Pink Stumps cricket match at the Senior Campus. We now turn our attention to a new school term that will present many more opportunities and challenges!

We were delighted to hear news of the

safe arrival of Bu Jenna’s baby Charli

Anneliese French on the last Saturday of

the holidays and we extend our heartfelt

congratulations and best wishes to both

Jenna and Alex. The advertised

Indonesian vacancy was not filled by an

external applicant however, the language

program will be capably maintained by Mrs Barbara Purcell

at the Junior Campus and Mr Peter Rock at the Senior

Campus. Our Year 5/6 students will have a temporary break

from their Indonesian studies this term as they undertake

Design and Technology with Mr Ben McKenzie.

The 2015 Annual Report will be presented at next

Wednesday’s School Council meeting. It is a compliance

requirement that schools report annually on student

achievement, engagement and wellbeing as well as the

school’s financial performance and position. Interested

members of the school community are welcome to attend

for the presentation of the report at 7pm in the Senior

Campus conference room.

It is also anticipated that School Council will on

Wednesday make the final decision on the model of long

navy pants that will be made available through the Uniform

Shop for the Senior Campus girls. As previously advised,

once introduced, the navy pants will be an optional item for

Terms 2 and 3. Girls can continue to wear their winter

skirts, change over to the navy pants, or alternate between

the two. The pants will be worn with the existing tailored

white shirts and navy (or VCE) jumpers, and of course the

regulation school shoes.

Consistent with other uniform items, the pants will be

embroidered with Camperdown College branding and only

the approved model, sold through the Uniform Shop, may

be worn. The specifications of the model, and anticipated

date of arrival, will be advised through a notice to families

after the decision is finalised at School Council.

Our Senior Campus girls, Policy sub-committee and full

School Council have all provided feedback about desired

features. These include suitability for a range of shapes

and sizes, a neat and tidy appearance consistent with the

rest of the College uniform, deep and practical pockets and

reasonable cost. Further feedback will be sought this week

from the girls about the exact nature and location of the

embroidered branding.

I was very pleased to receive confirmation this week that

final Design and Development approval for the

Corangamite Trade Skills Centre has been given. This

means that the project, which comprises TSC facilities on

five school sites including our own, can now go to tender,

with construction expected to commence in June or July. It

seems we can now confidently look forward to the

construction of our new Hairdressing and Beauty Facility

at the Senior Campus during second semester this year.

Some preparatory work was undertaken over the school

holidays in readiness for the removal of the old Year 9

buildings and pottery shed near the nursery. The

demolition contractors are working across five schools and

complications on another site meant that our buildings

were not able to be demolished over the holidays. The site

has been fenced off and we expect the view to change

considerably by the end of April. Watch this space!

Welcome back to Term 2 and we extend a special welcome to the new students who have joined us. We have a really

busy term ahead with camps and excursions planned and lots of wonderful opportunities for students to engage and

achieve personal excellence.

Over the holidays Mrs French gave birth to a baby girl, Charli Anneliese, and we look forward to meeting her in the

next few weeks.

Warm conditions prevailed for our House Athletics Sports during the last week of term. The winning house was Manifold with 803

Parent Teacher Interviews:

Thank you to all parents who attended Parent Teacher Interviews during the last week of Term 1. These interviews provide a valuable

opportunity to discuss your child’s progress and opportunities for improvement. They ensure that home and school are ‘on the same

page’ – your support is greatly valued. If you have any ideas on how we could streamline or make improvements to the way we

conduct these interviews your thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Greater Western Swimming Sports:

Olivia Maskell, Zoe Wilkinson, Bailey McDonald, Jack Helmore, Kurt McDonald, Nicholas Jones, Charlie Lucas and Taj Merrett

represented HSSSD at the Greater Western Swimming Sports at Ballarat at the end of last term. All students swam beautifully on the

day with both Jack and Kurt winning silver medals in two individual events. In addition, Kurt, Nick, Charlie and Taj won silver in

their freestyle relay. Congratulations to these students on their wonderful efforts and achievements and thank you to Miss Bloomfield,

Rob Helmore, Darren Maskell and Lisa McDonald for accompanying the students.

SRC Dress Up Day:

Students ended last term with a dress up day to raise funds for the Pink Ribbon, Cancer Council fundraiser. Students wore a touch of

pink, enjoyed hotdogs and party pies for lunch and watched a very entertaining cricket game between staff and Year 11/12 students.

Thanks to Mrs Charles and SRC students for their work in organising this wonderful event.

School for Student Leadership:

Tomorrow we will farewell our Year 9 students who are off to the School for Student Leadership at the Gnurad Gundidj campus in

Noorat for the remainder of this term. Based on students’ experiences in the past, we know that these students will have a very

stimulating and worthwhile educational experience. I am sure that Casey Smith and Paige Prout will prove to be excellent

ambassadors for the College and we look forward to their return and the leadership skills that they will bring to their senior years at

the college.

Welcome back everyone to what I’m sure will be another fantastic term of learning and growth here at the Junior

Campus! I hope you all had a restful break and enjoyed spending quality time with your children, whilst relishing our

glorious autumn days.

This term is already looking very busy on our calendar, with the Jump Rope for Heart launch next week, House Cross

Country is fast approaching, as is the annual Mother’s Day Stall and our Open Night. NAPLAN testing will also be

this term and we hope that the students are reflecting on their teaching and learning whilst also practicing their

reading and Maths fluency tasks, talking about their maths problem solving, practicing their spelling strategies and

working on their writing pieces. All these can be done at home, not with formal homework, but by asking them to share their work

with you. Please ask your teachers for any guidance as to how you can best support your child at home.

SunSmart:

A reminder to all parents that we are a SunSmart school. Although the extreme weather has passed, the UV rating is still high and it is

a requirement that all Junior Campus students wear a wide-brimmed hat until the end of April on the days when the UV rating reaches

3 or above. All classes have UV signage to notify students of the daily UV rating.

Athletics Carnivals:

Congratulations to Bullen Merri, the winning house at our Athletic Sports that were held late last term. We were blessed with perfect

weather; a strong gathering of parents and grandparents and the participation and behaviour of all students was exemplary.

From our house carnival, 32 students were selected to represent our College at the District Athletics Carnival that was held in the last

week of Term 1. Mr Attrill, Ms Norton and I had the pleasure of attending the day with our team. All athletes performed to the best of

their abilities all day and proudly represented our College. Thank you also to our wonderful Parents & Friends volunteers who again

ran the barbeque and canteen on the day.

Congratulations to Declan Tickner who qualified to represent Camperdown College at the Division Track and Field Championships in

high jump next week, in Warrnambool. We wish you all the best Declan!

Inquiry Units:

This term, our Prep students are investigating Living and Non-living things. Throughout their studies, students will investigate what

makes something living or non-living. Students will investigate that living things move, breathe, have the capacity to grow and eat

and drink and that non-living things do not.

Year 1/2 students will be completing a unit on How do Australian Animals survive? Throughout the term students will investigate

what living things need, what animals are native to Australia, how we can care for the native environment where these animals live,

and how Australian animals are similar and different?

Year 3/4 students are completing a unit of learning on Australian history. Students will complete investigations on ANZAC and early

navigators and explorers of Australia.

Year 5/6 students are completing a unit on Economics. Throughout the unit students will investigate the essential question of Why

money is important in our everyday lives. Students will study their role as a consumer, the difference between needs and wants, how

scarcity increases the cost of some products and services and why it is important to manage money.

Assembly:

Just a reminder that our Junior Campus assemblies are held at 2:45pm each Friday in the BER building. The assemblies are led by our

student leaders. This is an opportunity for parents and school community members to come together to participate in the celebrations

of our students.

March saw excellent conditions for the Camperdown College Year 7 – 12 Athletics Carnival. It was great to see so

th March saw the Prep – Year 6 House Athletics Carnival run at the Fredrick Street Sporting

Complex in near perfect weather. The students were able to display their athletic prowess in all track &

field events. A big congratulations to Bullen Merri who was the winning house on the day, however, all

students deserve a pat on the back for their effort and behaviour on the day.

Throughout the day’s activities, several students were able to shine and took home medals as Age Group

Champions:

Greater Western Region Swimming Carnival On Wednesday 23

rd March, eight students travelled to Ballarat to compete in

the Greater Western Region Swimming Carnival: Olivia Maskell, Zoe

Wilkinson, Jack Helmore, Bailey McDonald, Kurt McDonald, Taj Merrett,

Charlie Lucas and Nicholas Jones.

All students completed great swims with pleasing results. Special mention

must go to Jack Helmore who placed second in his 55m Butterfly event, Kurt

McDonald who place second in his 55m Freestyle event and to the 17 year

old boys (Kurt, Taj, Charlie and Nicholas) who placed second in their

Freestyle Relay.

A big thank you also to the three parents who helped transport students on the day: Lisa McDonald, Rob Helmore and Darren

Maskell.

Year 3 – 6 District Athletics On Wednesday 23

rd March, Camperdown College had 32 students compete in the District Athletics

Carnival at the Fredrick Street Sporting Complex.

The students competed in all track and field events and received points for their school. All students had

fun whilst competing and staff attending received some fantastic reports about the behaviour of our

students. We were spoilt with fantastic weather and the Parents & Friends once again provided a

scrumptious barbeque lunch.

We were very proud to announce that Declan Tickner (pictured right) has progressed in the 12/13 year

old boys High Jump at Division level, to be held in Warrnambool next Wednesday 20th

April. We

would like to wish him all the best and will report his results in the next big newsletter.

Prep – Year 6 Sport Coordinator

Year 3 - 6 Division Swimming Championships On Thursday 17

th March, three students from Year 3 – 6 travelled to Ballarat to

compete in the Division Swimming Championships. Ben Leonard-Pekin, Evie

Clementson and Eliza O’Neil (pictured) were able to swim against the best

swimmers in the Greater Western Primary Region. All students did a great job in

the pool and should be very proud of their results.

I would like to thank Maz O’Neil and Sandra Clementson who helped to

transport the students on the day.

It’s that time of year again, when we ask each student in Prep – Year 6 to donate one gift for the Parents &

Friends Mother’s Day Stall on Friday 6th May. Could all donated gifts

please be left at the Junior Campus Office by Monday 2th May.

All students are encouraged to bring $3 on Friday 6th May to purchase a gift for

their mum/special person.

Senior Campus Working Bee A Working Bee is being held on Saturday 30

th April from 9am – 12noon at the Senior Campus to tidy up the area around the

tennis courts and hall. Please bring shovels, wheelbarrows, gardening gloves, secateurs etc. Will involve some determined

removal of agapanthus plants!

The lucky winners will be announced at the final Term 1 Junior Campus Celebration of Learning Assembly on

Thursday 24th

March.

I am introducing a Digital Technology Spot to showcase some of the things that students

have been doing in the new Digital Technologies course here at Camperdown College.

This week is dedicated to touch typing that the Year 3/4 students were learning for several

weeks in the lead up to the holidays.

Over the next four weeks, our Junior Campus students are participating in the Heart Foundation Jump Rope for Heart program and we

would love your support! The Heart Foundation Jump Rope for Heart is an exciting and non-competitive program which encourages

children to become more active through skipping, learning new skills and raising vital funds for heart research and community health

programs.

Skipping is an excellent way for children to keep fit and healthy. Over the next four weeks during PE classes, your child(ren) will be

learning a range of fun skipping skills and new tricks. We will emphasise the importance of regular physical activity and the

importance of healthy eating for a healthy lifestyle.

Jump Rope for Heart is also a great way to encourage children to get involved in our community and support Australia’s leading heart

health charity, the Heart Foundation. The Jump Rope team provides us with lots of resources and support to implement the program

and in return we ask that students help by seeking sponsorship for their involvement.

At the end of the program we will be holding a Jump Off, an event to celebrate and culminate the Heart Foundation Jump Rope for

Heart program. This will be held during our Cross Country Carnival. The Jump Off is a great opportunity for you to witness how

much fun skipping can be, come along and pick up a rope!

The program will be officially launched next Tuesday 19th

April, with a special visit from Katie, who is with the Heart Foundation.

On this day, sponsorship forms will be given out the students. All fundraising money and forms are to be returned to school by Friday

20th

May.

Digital Tech Spot

Our Earn & Learn products arrived this week and were

distributed to very excited students! We would like to thank

Woolworths and Modern Teaching Aids and also everyone who

collected stickers last year that contributed to the $2000 worth

of products that we so gratefully received. Hunter Woods and Lola Evans display the products

that we received from the Earn & Learn program.

On the last day of Term 1, the Junior School Council held a pyjama day and barbeque lunch. It

was fabulous to see everyone in their favorite pyjamas and bring a gold coin! The JSC

representatives were very responsible with the various jobs that had to be completed throughout

the day.

They were so willing and eager to help in any way they possibly could. We were very excited to

be able to raise $425.80 that was donated to the Good Friday Appeal.
