Mr Matthew Hawkins AP Identity

This will be my final Calling article of the year, as I am heading off on Long Service Leave in Term 4. I am of course really looking forward to the time away, as I attempt to do some study, and enter the world of school drop-offs, Year 1 rotations and even tuckshop duty. However, I will miss some of my favourite events of the year in Term 4, including Year 12 Graduation, Year 12 Farewell Assembly and Celebration of Excellence. I may pop in to one or more of those to say goodbye to this year’s Seniors, for whom I have a great deal of time and admiration…even my Year 12 Religion and Ethics class! Mr Charles Brauer will more than capably fill my role in Term 4 and will of course be exceptionally supported and guided by Mrs Helen Righetti, Mr Paul Corfield, Miss Selena Fisk and Mr Luke Royes. I would like to take this opportunity to thank those four people, along with Mrs Marthy Watson, in particular for their outstanding efforts and leadership of the Identity area in 2014 so far. The College simply would not be what it is, or be able to do what it does without people like Helen, Paul, Selena, Marthy and Luke. Of course I am biased, but I see the Identity area of the school as the heart and soul of our College – it is what makes us unique and special in so many ways, and this is only possible because of the people in the team. St. Patrick’s is lucky to have them. I would also like to take the opportunity to thank my fellow members of the College Leadership Team. With the departure of Mr David Gardiner at the end of last year, and with Dr Michael Carroll taking professional renewal leave this term, our team has undergone some changes this year. I thank Mr Frank Torrisi for his leadership this term in his role as Acting Principal and Mr Ray Celegato likewise as Acting College Dean. Thank you also to Mr Chris Campbell, Ms Zoe Morgan and Mr Charles Brauer for their guidance and friendship during 2014.

One aspect of Term 4 I am very conscious of missing is the farewell of Dr Michael Carroll, so I wanted to take a moment here to acknowledge his contribution to the College from my perspective. Dr Carroll is the school’s longest serving Principal, and as our entire community knows, his contribution in his eleven years has been immense. I have been fortunate to work with Michael for the past five years, and have learned a great deal from his him. Michael’s leadership has seen St. Patrick’s go from strength to strength, and I have admired Michael’s ability to steer the ship so steadily, while undertaking so many significant reforms during his time as Principal. There are far too many achievements to list here, but in the Identity area, Michael has overseen the instigation and growth of the Paddies Van, the initiation of the Justice and Peace in the Curriculum program and the very unique and progressive Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education Homestay Program, among many others. I would also like to make special mention of Michael’s leadership during the tragic events of 2010. That was my first year at the College, and my first year on a College Leadership Team, and Elliott’s tragic passing happened on February 15. Michael’s superb leadership at that time not only ensured our community was safe, well-informed and cared for, but also showed me what authentic leadership was all about. I would like to sincerely wish Michael all the very best for his final term at St. Patrick’s, but also for his new challenge as Principal of St Joseph’s Gregory Terrace in 2015 and beyond. Finally, I would like to wish the entire St Patrick’s College community all the very best for the remainder of this year.

OUR YEAR 12S Term 3 has been significant in many ways. One stand out feature for me is the role that our Year 12s play in our College community. Our Year 12s have reached many milestones and jumped many hurdles throughout this term. Despite the busyness and energy demanding tasks to be completed, they have continued to meet their leadership responsibilities. In particular, their role as Big Brothers for our Year 5s. Our College has a proud and healthy Big and Little Brother program,. Today, our Brothers were able to get to together and share lunch and some time playing games, chatting and laughing. The images below have captured some moments at today’s lunch. Thank you to all the Years 12s, Year 5s, the Year 5 teachers and House Deans for making this possible

YEAR 7 ANCIENT ROMAN BANQUET

On Monday 16 September Year 7 held a Roman banquet where students dressed up as their chosen Roman person. Part of the assessment was to write an historical description about what life was like for the chosen Roman, how they fitted into the social hierarchy and how they contributed to society. The banquet began with the Thomas Tornabene, a Calvary soldier, riding up the school entrance be-hind the Roman army, on his Shetland pony. This was followed by Mr Hall who introduced the entire banquet and games in Latin which was then translated by Ms Mulvihill in English. We ate grapes, chicken, olives, ham, porridge and even cakes. Apart from eating there were chariot races where a person from 7A, 7B, 7C and 7D ran around the school on broom-stick horses. Slaves were walking around offering the fine foods to the upper classes and a sacrifice of grapes was made to the Roman God Dionysius, God of Wine and Grapes for the fruitful season ahead. Overall the day was not only interesting but brought together our whole Term 3 unit. James Hastie (Year 7 student)

Treacy House Seniors Paintball Excursion

On Saturday the 6 September, Year 11 and 12 students from

Treacy House along with their House Dean, Mr Crowley,

travelled to Mango Hill for a team building exercise, playing

paintball.

After an early arrival at school, we travelled in the Paddies

Van to the venue, where we were given our equipment

(camouflage overalls, safety goggles, face mask, chest vest,

gloves and box) and a safety briefing, which included

instructions not to shoot at the helicopters that occasionally

flew over the paintball field. Getting hit by a paintball for

the first time and the subsequent sting was a shock to

everyone, and we soon realized that we weren’t the heroes or

“Rambos” that we thought we were.

We quickly learnt that we had to employ teamwork

strategies to overcome our opponents who incidentally were

many of Mr Crowley’s Math students from 2012! Despite

losing our first game, we managed to have two great wins in

the next games to win overall on the day. At the end of the

day, even though many of us were bruised and suffering from

paint-stained clothes and hair, everyone had a lot of fun

whilst learning the importance of team work. Paintball

certainly set up the Treacy Seniors of 2015 as a great force to

be reckoned with.
