CROSSING SAFELY AT A SUPERVISED SCHOOL CROSSING

STOP - LOOK - LISTEN - THINK

WHEN USING THE SCHOOL CROSSING

PLEASE REMEMBER THESE 4 WORDS TO KEEP YOU SAFE.

STOP - When you come to a school crossing and there is a crossing supervisor, stop behind the yellow line. Stand quietly

ready for the next step.

LOOK - At the crossing supervisor to see what he/she is about to do. Stand quietly and patiently while waiting for your super-

visor to stop the traffic. When it is safe your supervisor will walk on to the road to stop the traffic.

LISTEN - For the whistle. When it is safe to cross the road your Crossing Supervisor will blow the whistle 2 times. Walk

smartly, not run across the road.

THINK - About what you are doing, walk smartly not run across the road. Watch and listen to your supervisor in case of

emergency. Your supervisor will put one hand up to halt you coming across the road or wave you on to cross the road.

If you would like more information on this or any other road safety issue, please phone Transport and Main Roads on 1300

360 135 or visit our website www.roadsafety.qld.gov.au

ANZAC DAY is one of the most significant days for our Nation. We paid our respects today with a service at school with all the students and a number of special RSL guests. Tomorrow there will be thousands of ceremonies and marches throughout our country. As usual our local Sandgate ANZAC Day Parade will be held, commencing from behind the Sandgate Police Station at 9.10am. I invite all of our St Patrick’s young men to put on their College uniform and take the time to show their respect and join in the parade tomorrow. Please meet Mr Gardiner behind the Sandgate Police Station around 9.00am. SHORE TO GATE –Thank you to all the families who have supported our annual fundraiser. It was a great day to finish Term 1 and we had a number of positive comments from the public about the obvious close relationships between our students and our staff. We have now raised over $52000. That is a fantastic effort from our community. The new screens and speakers in the Callan Centre are very smart and ensure everyone now has good sight and sound from every seat. The other section of the fundraising goes direct to each of the Houses International project. From personal experiences of being involved with our In-dia Immersions, where Mooney and Quane Houses support communities, I can assure families that the funds raised will have a huge positive influence on so many people in communities we support across the world. On their behalf I thank all families. Please, if your son has not returned his Shore to Gate card yet can this be finalised on Friday.

THE “LIVE BELOW THE LINE CHALLENGE” IS ON AGAIN THIS YEAR. This is where for one week we live on $2 a day (for food) from 6 –10 May. Why $2 a day? In 2005, the World Bank defined the extreme poverty line as living on less than US$1.25 (the current equivalent of $2 in Australia) per day. The rules are below if you would like to think about it. We’re hoping to get plenty of student involved this year and we hope to get plenty of staff joining them as well. You can certainly work in teams and put your money together to get yourself some good meals. It’s always fun if you get together with a group of mates and do the challenge as a group. Everyone throws in $10 for their shopping for that week and as a group you split the food amongst each other. For those who did it last year I think we can all admit it was a tough but worthwhile experience and gives us some insight to living on the other end of the scale.

PADDIES GREENFINGERS GARDEN TEAM: Our garden has yield a crop of carrots and tomatoes this week and some enthusiastic parents have used them to cook up a delicious tomato and carrot soup for the Paddies Van. These ladies have also been working hard in the garden to clear space for the planting of potatoes, tomatoes and beans. They will be preparing meals for Paddies Van on a Friday morning in the Callan Centre kitchen from 8:30 - 10 am. If you are interest to help out in the garden or join the cooking team on Friday morning please contact the Ministry office on 3631 9089. We welcome any equipment for the garden especially small plastic pots to use for seedlings.

TRADE TESTER PROGRAM A reminder for Year 10 students interested in the Trade Taster Program in Terms 3 and 4. Please note last week’s Calling article and see me for an expression of interest form. To date only 2 boys have approached me. I strongly recommend this program to any Year 10 student who is considering following a trade pathway as a career. Applications close on Friday 3 May 2013, which is next Friday. OP SPECIAL CONSIDERATION Year 12 students who are OP eligible and feel they have grounds for special provision on this year’s QCST, must see me to submit special provision applications before 21 May. QCS TEST PRACTICE The second Kairos retreat will mean that a large number of the Year 12 cohort will be absent on Monday and Tuesday of next week. Students not attending Kairos are required at school, where they will attend two days of workshops and practices for this year’s QCS test. I spoke to Year 12’s last week about the importance of doing well on QCS and the impact QCS performance has on OP calculation. Hence, it is vital that students attend on Monday and Tuesday. These days are not for catching up on assign-ments either at home or in the library. It is essential that boys arrive switched on and positive. There is still much work to be done. LOOKING FOR THE RIGHT TERTIARY EDUCATION? Campion College will be holding an information evening in Brisbane on the benefits of a Liberal Arts degree. Dr Ryan Messmore, President of Campion College, Sydney, will be speaking at 41 Deagon St Sandgate on Thursday 9 May at 7pm. All interested students, parents, teachers and associated youth and careers advisers are most welcome to learn about this standout alternative to a mainstream tertiary education. Supper will be served and there will be opportunity to speak with Ryan and past QLD students of Campion College. For more information please email Kim on [email protected] or ph 07 38693005. www.campion.edu.au.

SKI TRIP The first snow of the season has fallen in the snowy mountains and it’s now only a few short months until St Patrick’s departs on our annual Snow Trip during the September holidays. Our 53 student positions have been filled on this year’s tour however we are still taking names for any students who would like to be placed on a wait list. Students must see Mrs Schultz in the main office if they wish to be notified should a student’s circumstances prevent them from attending the tour. Mr Doug Locke Tour organiser

It has been a very positive start to the new term. Students have been quick to settle back into work and College routine after a well deserved break. It is important that we maintain this standard for the remainder of the term. INTER-HOUSE CROSS COUNTRY – May I congratulate the students on a very positive day on Thursday for the Annual Inter-House Cross Country Carnival. The attendance was even better than on a normal school day, and the uniform and participa-tion were also excellent. The Year 12s really took great responsibility in organising and encouraging the younger students, and set the best example by making a sincere effort in their own race. YEAR 9 CAMP – The Year 9 camp will take place week 6 from Monday to Friday. Please ensure your son has all the required items on the ‘What to bring’ list, including plenty of warm clothing. All Year 9 students who have not returned their camp forms must do so by Friday this week. YEAR 9 PARENT INFORMATION EVENING- Invitation to all parents to attend an evening explaining the Year 9 Camp. This will be held on Wednesday 1 May starting at 7.00pm in the Waterford Building. Like adults, you experience stress every day. You will benefit from learning effective stress management skills. A little bit of stress is okay, and can even be helpful. However, when you become overloaded with stress or the stress lasts for long periods of time, the stress needs to be managed. When you are unable to adequately manage your stress, you may feel anxiety or depression, experience physical problems, withdraw from family and friends, display aggression or bullying behavior.

Violence and conflicts continue to escalate at home, in schools, and in communities. Conflict can be defined as a disagreement in which two or more parties perceive a threat to their interests, needs or concerns. Conflicts can be disagreements about small or very large matters, or reactions to and/or a build-up of annoyances. You probably think that conflict can be avoided. The truth is that you will continue to find yourself in the midst of conflicts of varying intensities. Some might be mild while others might be very intense. Regardless of the intensity of your conflicts, you need a set of skills that will help you deal effectively with the conflicts that arise.

STARTING LIFE AT ST PATRICK’S Term 1 has been great, fun, exciting and welcoming. My big brother is really nice to me; he makes me feel comfortable in my new school. I have made lots of friends and I cannot wait for Term 2. Angus Ruggieri-Guthrie—Year 5 T2 This term has been a rollercoaster. There have been mixed emotions; for example at first I was nervous and scared but now I feel comfortable. I have made many new friends in Treacy house, which has helped me fit in. This term I played volleyball; which was an enjoyable experience and hope to play many more sports for the school. I also enjoyed Year 8 camp, swimming carnival, retreat and the House activities that have taken place. Ryan Laydon—Year 8 T6

Pictured(left to right): Angus Ruggieri-Guthrie, James Ingeri and Samuel Hanelt on day one.

YEAR 8 CAMP & RETREAT Our Retreat day was a time to reflect on our journey at St Pat’s so far. We shared with each other the experiences that we’ve had at school, including the challenges we face . We had some group activities such as writing down what the day was like. Retreat was a great experience to see people in a different light.

Camp was hard and challenging, but also fun. We did activities such as high ropes, climbing a mountain for four hours, hiking to different campsites and cooking dinner and breakfast. It gave me a great chance to become better friends with some other peo-ple. I might have complained a little at the time, but altogether it was a good and fun experience. Jared Ritchie—Year 8 T2

Mr Luke Donatini Director of Sport

This week saw the official introduction of our 2013 Football, Chess and Rugby seasons for CIC and AIC. On Tuesday’s Spirit Assembly we acknowledged our First Squads for Football, Chess and Rugby and formally announced the respective sporting captains. With this Saturday being Round 1 of CIC/ AIC Rugby and Foot-ball, it is vital that all participating students from Year 5 to Year 12 are available to play for St Patrick’s College regardless whether their game is a home game or an away game. This weekend’s fixtures will be challenging enough for all in-volved without the extra pressure of students not turning up to their scheduled game of Football or Rugby. We experienced some very good success last weekend in both codes when we trialled against St Peter’s College and Brisbane Boys’ College and we would like to see this enthusiasm and success contin-ue over the coming 7 weeks of AIC and CIC sport. We look forward to seeing many St Patrick’s College students, parents and supporters both on and off the sporting fields this Saturday in both Rugby and Football. OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENTS Ben Hogan (Year 7) – selected to represent Metropolitan North Under 12 Regional AFL Primary Team to compete at the Queensland Primary AFL Championships Corey Sergeant (Year 10) - ranked 2nd at the Australian Junior Open squash National Championship held in Sydney over Easter. He won silver and is hoping to make the National Talent Squad chosen from this tournament. Selena Fisk (SPC Staff Member) – represented Queens-land at the recent Australian Mixed Outdoor Netball Champi-onships. Her Queensland team won the Championships. Nicola Bone (SPC Staff Member) – competed at the Na-tional Surf Lifesaving Championships last weekend on the Gold Coast in the Open Women's Surf Boat Race. Her surf boat crew won Bronze at these National Championships.
