ANZAC Day is a special day in Australia and New Zealand. At St Patrick’s College our ANZAC Liturgy was held on Tuesday and again it provided the opportunity for our College community to reect on the sacrices made by so many people. This year at St Patrick’s College Mr Michael Lane, father of Angus Lane (Year 12), led our reecƟon. He delivered a very moving and emoƟonal recount of his experiences and thoughts on the Anzacs. We were again fortunate to have representaƟves from the Sandgate RSL and I thank them and Michael Lane for making our ANZAC Liturgy so special. Another group that is integral to the St Patrick’s College Anzac Liturgy is the students who are part of local cadet units. This year there were a good number students who parƟcipated and represented Naval, Air Force and Army cadets. To have such a large number of our students parƟcipaƟng in the Liturgy brings a special signicance and I thank each of the students involved. This great representaƟon conƟnued on Wednesday with a large number of St Patrick’s College students parƟcipaƟng at the Sandgate and Redclie ceremonies. A special menƟon to our newly formed Drum Corp who under the guidance of Mr Andrew Will, led the Sandgate and Redclie parades. Well done to all involved. This week the rst rounds of AIC and CIC rugby, soccer and chess begin with games against St Laurence’s and St Peter’s. This trimester of sport aƩracts the most parƟcipaƟon and spectator support. All rugby and soccer games are at Curlew Park this weekend so I encourage people to come down and support the St Patrick’s College teams. The Sports Support Group operate the canteen and raise valuable funds that ulƟmately support your sons. Your assistance in volunteering some Ɵme in the canteen on Saturday would be greatly appreciated. On Thursday the Spirit Assembly acknowledge the rst Teams in rugby, soccer and chess. In parƟcular, the captains of the various sports were announced. I congratulate the following students. Captain of Chess Jacob Reed Captain of First Chess Tyler Davidson Captain of Soccer Rupert Bugden Captain of Rugby Jacob Davis Next week St Patrick’s College will parƟcipate in our School Renewal Program. A team of people from EREA will spend three days at the College and meet with a range of people with the view of examining the nature and culture of St Patrick’s College and how the Touchstones of LiberaƟng EducaƟon, Gospel Spirituality, Inclusive Community, JusƟce and Solidarity are lived at St Patrick’s College. The nal result of the Renewal is the producƟon of a Renewal Report that will be presented to the College later in the year. I will let the community know when this occurs. Finally, this week the second of the Year 12 Kairos Retreats begin on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. This is an extremely powerful experience for these students and I ask that you keep them in your thoughts and prayers over this Ɵme. I hope you have a great week and hope to see many of you at Curlew Park on Saturday. God Bless Dr Michael Carroll College Principal 26 April 2012 No. 12

IDENTITY & MINISTRY

ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL IDENTITY — MATTHEW HAWKINS

In my role here at St Patrick’s, I o en have enrolment interviews with po‐ten al students and their families.  I regularly begin these interviews by ex‐plaining who I am and what my posi on is.  When I say that I am the “Assistant Principal – Iden ty”, I am o en met with quizzical looks, probably to be expected with a job  tle like mine.  I o en then explain that basically, it is my job to work with people to help ensure that we remain authen cally who we say we are: a Catholic school in the Edmund Rice tradi on.  This is our Iden ty.   The concept of Iden ty is also central to a very important day in our na‐on’s calendar, ANZAC Day, celebrated across Australia yesterday.  Some‐

what different to Remembrance Day on 11 November, ANZAC Day is not a day when we only remember and honour those who made the ul mate sacrifice for their country and our freedom, but we actually celebrate a  me when we as a na on came of age – a  me when we began to shape our iden ty.  Simply put, ANZAC Day is who we are and what we do as Australi‐ans.  It is a great indicator of our na onal iden ty.  On that fateful day 97 years ago, Australian and New Zealand soldiers fought together with the aim of keeping their friends and families at home safe.  They were protec ng a newly formed na on, but also shaping future genera ons of Australians’ sense of themselves.  Those brave soldiers that day could not possibly have known their legacy, but by figh ng the good fight in their own  me, in their own way, that legacy lives on and becomes stronger each year.  Evidence of this was on show at our own ANZAC Day service here at the College on Tuesday morning of this week.  It was a moving ceremony in which many people showed their pride and respect for the day.  Major Michael Lane, father of Angus in Year 12, spoke eloquently and powerfully in sharing his own view of ANZAC Day and what it means to him and his family.  We were honoured to be present for his address.  Many of our student cadets were absolutely outstanding in their work during the ceremony and I sincerely thank them for their efforts in prepara on and during the service.  They were led extremely well by Corporals Will Hayes and Trent Riddell.  The Sandgate sub‐branch of the RSL was again represented, this year by Mr Alf Findlay, Mr Doug Warden, Mr Peter Munson and Mr Darren Barber.  Mr Andrew Will began a marvellous tradi on with the launch of the St Patrick’s Drum Line to exit the guard and our special guests, and as always, our musicians equipped themselves very well, this  me with a great rendi on of Powderfinger’s “How Far Have we Really Come?”.  Special men on must also go to the group of New Zealand boys who sang their anthem unaccompanied during the service, certainly one of the highlights of the morning.  My thanks to Mr Stan Carr for assis ng these boys. Indeed, the morning’s service was a fine example of our own Iden ty.  The boys were respec ul; they prayed, reflected and

sang together as a “band of brothers”.  This is a er all, who we are, and what we do: our Iden ty.

A s many within our community would be aware, by tradi on, the Catholic Church dedicates each month of the

year to a certain devo on. In May, it is the Blessed Virgin Mary. This devo on arose among Jesuits in Rome in

the late 18th century and quickly spread throughout the Western Church.  The Chris an Brothers have long held a devo‐

on to the Blessed Virgin Mary, and as such, this is an

important aspect of our own Catholic Iden ty in the

Edmund Rice tradi on here at St Patrick’s College.

Therefore, during the month of May, every morning

before school, a prayer will be said to Mary at “Our

Lady of Perpetual Help” Memorial Garden.  The pray‐

er will commence at 8.25am each day during May.

We would love to see as many boys there as possible,

and of course, members of the community – parents,

staff and friends – are also more than welcome.

At the beginning of the year the College purchased a program known as Turni n. This program is used for the submission of assignments and is quite common in a number of schools. Students are required to upload assignments into Turni n.  As a consequence the program will check to see if the work is wri en by the student or taken from another source. It is most important that students are submi ng work which is their own and not the product of an internet site. Students using work from an internet or any other site must ensure that their work is referred correctly. The procedure for referring is explained in the students diary. Turni n also allows us to archive assignments and will check the authorship of a task against work submi ed by students in previous years. We believe that this is a much fairer system.  We will commence using Turn n this term. For the moment only students in English in Years 10‐12 will be required to up‐load work into Turn n. Teachers will demonstrate how to use the program. Year 10 students have an assignment due next week. This assignment does not need to be uploaded through Turn n, but Year 10 teachers will use this task as a model for how to use the program.  Please note carefully the following requirement. With the excep on of Year 10 next week,. All English students in Years 10‐12 will be required to submit a Turn n digital receipt when handing in their hard copy. As per College policy a hard copy is s ll required for all assignment submissions. Hence final copies cannot be submi ed through Turn n, The hard copy must match the work submi ed through Turn n exactly.   I will provide more informa on at a later date regarding other year levels and subjects u lizing Turn n.    Recently two of our Year 12 students, Benjamin Jones and Sam Knox a ended the Gallipoli Barracks Australian Defence Force Trades Experience Program.  This is a three day program run by Warrant Officer Peter Thatcher that seeks to introduce its’ par cipants to all aspects of life in the defence forces.  Day 1 saw the boys meet at 0800hrs for their compulsory Health and Safety briefing, also included in this presen‐ta on was the course assignment explained and the basic run through of what the boys would be achieving on the three day program.  Throughout the course of the day the boys experienced weapons training and simula on, a ended the Malaria Ins tute for an R & D talk, lunch in the mess hall – a room larger than the Callan   Centre which impressed the boys both with its’ size and the quality of food!  They then went on a walk‐through of the different regiments including Mounted Calvary, Tanks and APCs.

PUBLIC SPEAKING  On April 22, Joshua Smith in Year 12 con nued his win‐ning streak at the Rostrum Voice of Youth heats at QUT in the city. The compe on is always difficult: compe ‐tors need to prepare a 6‐8 minute speech on a set top‐ic.  Judging  criteria  are  demanding  ‐  students  are  ex‐pected  to  have  a  well‐prepared,  fully‐memorised presenta on with  flawless  structure  and  a  good  bal‐ance of appeals to the emo on and the intellect. It is a task that even the best of English students have found challenging, but  fortunately  Joshua's  skills  in deba ng and public speaking gave him a compe ve edge.  Despite having a less than ideal amount of  me to pre‐pare  an  eight minute  speech  on  a  topic  remarkably   relevant  to  the  College  this  year  ("out  of  the  shad‐ows"), he did an  incredible job, nearly memorising the en re  speech  and winning  his  heat. He will  progress through to the next round of compe on on May 12 at the same venue.

INDIA IMMERSION

JAKE STEPHENSON

In trying to describe my me in India, I could explain our i nerary and nearly four weeks of the amazing ac vi es and sites. However, on reflec on, I think a more effec ve way of explaining my true experience of India might be by sharing this simple story …..

Kalkata to me will always hold a deep place within my heart. It is one of the most disgusting places I have been to. There is never a time where there is no noise. There are so many people, it was extremely hard to imagine there is any place quite like Kolkata. During our time in Kolkata we mainly visited two places, Loreto Sealdah School and Daya Dan, home for the severely physically and mentally handicapped. The children at Loreto, that we spent the most time with were known as Rainbow children. I will never forget how beautiful and extremely happy every one of the children were when we arrived at the school. After a short assembly, we met Sister Cyrell. She is the principal of Lorreto although she is retiring in six months. Her achievements are beyond belief. She has done so much, even with her humble beginnings she has created Loretto which has become a place of learning and a home to many of the children. The child that I spent most of my time with name was Baishakinste was an extremely shy girl who had apparent struggles throughout her short life. Sister Cyrell told us that many of the children had been taken out of their homes or off the street due to mistreatment by their families and even some who had been part of trafficking. Loretto school, Sealdah will always hold a very deep place in my heart and I will never forget what I have learnt from the Rainbow children. Daya Dan, was the most disturbing and confronting experience I have ever been a part of. The children there are some of the most severely, physically and mentally handicapped children in Kalkata, or the state west Bangal. Entering Daya Dan was literally like entering another world. I remember feeling extremely uncomfortable, and extremely uneasy like never before. When we were told to sit with a child, all who could barely move around without the help of a Sister, it was extremely hard. But despite all my tension and uncomfortableness, I still sat down behind a boy who was my age, 16, but could not stand up, or talk, could not even feed himself, it took all my strength not to get up and leave and I’m extremely grateful for this because I ended up going back to Daya Dan three times. There was not one main Sister who was at Daya Dan but many Sisters who had dedicated their lives to these children, 24/7, 365 days a year. This kind of dedication bewildered me and was one of the real eye openers to me on this trip. I will always cherish what I learnt at Daya Dan and will never be ungrateful for anything. I have, be it big or small, because in Kolkata, in all of India it does not matter what you have as long as it is not taken for granted. If there is one thing that this trip has taught me is resilience. It is apparent throughout every day I spent in India. It was the experience of a lifetime. I will always try to show so much resilience in my life because I know that there are people in India who live on the street and don’t have an education, no parents, only the clothes on their back. This trip has truly opened my eyes to the truth about the extent of poverty and this trip has made that apparent, so I will use this in my final year at St. Patrick’s to try and get this message, about poverty out and to be a better leader. A special thanks to Fr Liam and all the teachers that made this trip possible. I will be forever grateful. It has been the best experience of my life and I hope to be able to use what I have learnt in India to great lengths in the future. I will never forget this trip. It has opened my eyes to how bad some people live their lives and how good my life is compared to others. This trip would not be possible without Fr Liam. He has a big place in my heart and in the heart of every person we have met on this trip. I believe he is the greatest man I have ever met.

AIC rugby/football events to spectate MUST change into FULL College Formal Uniform (this will include black belt, College grey socks and black school shoes). All students will be required to wear their College tie in Term 2.

ALL Spectators are reminded that we would like positive and encouraging cheering only (negative cheering and taunts will not

be tolerated). ALL Spectators are to respect the decisions of game referees and venue officials at all times.

For students, SPC sporting events are not ‘social functions’ for our students to interact with girls from other schools. Those s tudents attending an SPC sporting event are there to compete on the sporting field and/or to support other SPC sporting teams who are competing.

All Spectators are reminded that Curlew Park is a non- alcohol and non- smoking venue. We ask that everyone respect this and refrain from consuming alcohol or smoking within the Curlew Park precinct.

Any St Patrick’s College Student or Supporter (parent/’old boy’ etc.) who does not follow the above mentioned expectations on ‘game days’ may very well be asked to leave the sporting venue. Further action may be taken in the preceding week should it be deemed necessary.

Outstanding Achievements

Patrick’s College admirably and played some great rugby. Overall results for Division 1 were 1st – TSS, 3rd – NC, 4th – SPC. Game 1 Churchie 12 d SPC 10 Game 2 SPC 21 d St Ignatius Sydney 0 Game 3 SPC 52 d Toowoomba Grammar 0 Game 4 SPC 5 d TSS 0 Final NC 31 d SPC 19
