20th Annual Callicoon Tractor Parade:
Small town values – one big paradeBY JEANNE SAGER
If you ask Katrina Graby, there arethree words that sum up theCallicoon Tractor Parade: “small
town values.”Those three words explain what the
parade is about but also how it is that20 years after a few tractors madetheir way down Main Street oneSunday in June the parade is now asmuch a part of the town as the his-toric Callicoon Theater or theDelaware Youth Center.
Those three words explain howGraby, who grew up in the hills aboveCallicoon, jumped into her first yearas lead organizer of the parade on itsanniversary year and decided to
After graduating the University of Rhode Island with a Bachelor’s in Entrepreneurial Management, Katrina Graby moved back home andfound a job with Liberty Mutual Insurance. Wanting to give back to the community where she was raised, she took over as lead organizerof this year’s Callicoon Tractor Parade – the 20th Annual. That is dad’s John Deere tractor on the family farm overlooking Callicoon and apreview of this year’s Tractor Parade t-shirt – a must have!

shake things up. After all, she’s a small town girl who
graduated from Sullivan West, wentto college and came home to live and
work in the place where she grew up.And when Delaware Youth CenterPresident Cindy Menges told Grabythe facility could use some help withone of its biggest fundraisers, sheknew what she had to do.
“My summer memories are all atthe Youth Center,” Graby, who servesas vice president of the CallicoonBusiness Association, recalled, “I justfelt like I needed to do my part to giveback.”
But there's another piece too. Grabywas raised on the farm owned by herparents, Bill and Marie.
“Being back now, it’s amazing howmuch more I appreciate it,” she said,“how lucky I was. I mean my dadwould come home at 11 p.m. andmilk cows so he could be at my bas-ketball games.”
The tractors that make up theparade are a piece of her childhood, apiece of the life that drew her back toher small town.
“Watching [the parade] you canrelate to the people. You know thehard work they do. You can appreci-ate it so much more,” she said.

She’s putting all that history and allthose memories into helping dozensof volunteers make this year’s tractorparade the biggest – and hopefullythe best – the Youth Center has everput on.
Her focus? The small town, of course. That’s meant hiring another Sulli-
van West graduate, graphic designerRJ Rosa, to design the iconic tractorparade t-shirt. It’s meant cancellingplans to hire an out-of-town businessto provide the chicken barbecue tra-ditionally served on the Youth Centergrounds after the parade, in favor ofhiring local caterer Kristal Whitmoreof Callicoon Kristal Bowl to provide afull spread, including chicken andpork.
It’s meant adding a tug-o-war tour-nament on the Youth Center groundsafter the parade is over, encouragingpeople to put together teams to com-pete, in the hopes that they will stay intown longer, donate to the Youth Cen-ter and stop in to the local businessestoo.
Callicoon might be a small town, but they pack a whole lot of value intoone big parade.

DYC Tug-of-warBY JEANNE SAGER
The fun won’t end when the lasttractor makes its way downMain Street at this year’s Calli-
coon Tractor Parade. Directly after the parade on June 12,

The Callicoon Creamery, on Route17B, just a few steps off of LowerMain Street in Callicoon, is openunder new ownership and they’reserving up simple, home-cooked,mouth-watering, tasty food.
And when you’re craving some-thing cold and sweet? You can ordera cone of soft serve.
John Halloran and wife Lanae, bought the Creamery at the begin-ning of this year and officiallyreopened its doors on April 15.
“I’ve always had my eye on theCreamery. I think the building isbeautiful,” said Halloran. “I like howit’s perched here over the creek. It’sbigger and more professional, but
it’s not too big.”For the past 5 years Halloran, with
the help of Lanae, ran the Chuck
Wagon: their food truck which waslocated on the right hand side ofState Route 17B, just past the
Kountry Korner gas station inHortonville.
“My menu was limited because itwas so small inside the truck,” saidHalloran, “but I wanted to make surethe food I was making, was fromscratch. Whether it was pressing theburger patties or making fries by cut-ting up the potatoes, par-fryingthem so they’re nice and crispy withthe skin on. Then seasoning themwith garlic powder and salt.
“I also wanted to have options forvegetarians and something thatinvolved seafood,” continuedHalloran. “I really wanted some-thing that appealed both to localsand the weekend people, noteither/or. Everyone appreciates foodthat they know has been touched;made from scratch.”
The previous owners of theCallicoon Creamery were regularcustomers of the Chuck Wagon, and
John Halloran, wife Lanae and son “O” stand just in front of their new “baby,” the CallicoonCreamery.

after having a quiet conversationduring the fall together, Halloranhad new endeavors in store for him-self and his family.
The food truck closed aroundChristmas time of last year andHalloran began planning for a possi-ble take over of the CallicoonCreamery.
Once the sale was made, Halloranstarted prepping.
“When I started in April at theCreamery I really wanted to show-case the same menu that I hadbefore, but be able to expand on it,”smiled Halloran, “because I havemore storage, I have more ability toprep things. It’s great.”
And now, Halloran has about fiveemployees who are able to help withthe food service. At the food truckHalloran’s wife, Lanae, would helpprep but there was barely enoughroom for the two of them to bebehind the counter at the same time.
Gazing at the Creamery with ado-ration clearly evident in his eyes,Halloran said, “Now we can workside by side.”
Lanae, who likes to stay morebehind-the-scenes, makes most ofthe marinades, sauces and taco sal-sas herself.
“It’s a little stressful as we’re still inthe beginning phases of everything,”said Lanae, “but we’re excited. We’vehad a good following, and now peo-ple can have their food, plus dessert.
“A lot of new things are takingplace and we aim to please. We’repeople oriented. We love to connectwith others.”
On any given day, as you drive pastthe Creamery, cars can be seenparked out front and lined up acrossthe street, with a crowd gathered atthe window giving orders.
The Hallorans must clearly bedoing something right.
“There’s something about myburgers,” said John smiling, “I haveno idea what, but I have regulars thatcome once or twice a week just forthe burgers.
“I want everything to be good,”said Halloran. “I’m hoping to makethis place a fixture.”
The Falafel wrap from the CallicoonCreamery is a little bit of healthy, the perfectkind of spicy and the right amount of cucum-ber-saucy to keep you feeling satisfied.

My grandmother was a phenomenalbaker of classic Eastern Europeanstyle, no recipes. Just a pinch of thisor a pinch of that but it was alwaysperfect,” Barnett said, as if gazinginto the memories coming forwardin her mind. “I have vivid memoriesof waking up with music playing on aSunday and my mother was havingpeople over.
“She would make these bomberGreek salads. Everything was alwayshandmade. I remember orange-
strawberry smoothies, crazy frozenbaked goods and merengues. It wasalways the works with her, on abudget, but she always did it well.”Barnett strives to do the same at CafeAdella Dori with every option hand-made, starting slow, in order to getcomfortable with the flow, and to seewhat people are looking for.
Starting with just a few items on themenu, Barnett wants to make every-thing well and keep her style of foodfun and interesting. Being familiar
with the growing season here in thenortheast, Barnett knows what toexpect, what’s coming and likes touse what’s available to her: dande-lion and chickweed greens, parsnips, stinging nettle, etc.
“I like to do things beautifully andit’s important for things to lookgood,” explained Barnett, “but there’snothing frilly about me. I tend towork with people that have thatsame sensibility.
“And we have a no waste policy. Iwant to use up everything I can andsee what I can use that’s just outsidemy door. When we are out of BeachLake Bakery’s challah bread, we usethe ends to make bread pudding andit’s delicious.”
So whether you’re looking to chatover coffee or tea, enjoy homemadebaked goods, or fill up at lunch time,Cafe Adella Dori is a must.
From the left, Trina Pilonero, Gina Abatemarco, Lee Houck and Tara LaRuffa sit and chat withCafe Adella Dori owner Eva Barnett, as they enjoy a taste of some of her fresh, locallysourced menu items.
Fresh flowers sit on every table, warm sunlight pours in through the front windows and oldphotographs of owner Eva Barnett’s grandmother and mother line the walls of Cafe AdellaDori.

The gift of life for Bryce
Neversink youth, 8, gets heart transplant
BY JEANNE SAGER
NEVERSINK — The Tues-
day night when life changed
for the Rogerson family was
just like any other.
With a planned two-hour
delay for the Tri-Valley
School District the next day,
8-year-old Bryce and 5-year-
old Bryan had been given a
pass to stay up late and watch
a movie together. Sixteen-
year-old Emily was doing
what teenagers do on a
school night. Dad Brian was
on a hunting trip in Alabama,
so mom Nicole was snuggling
in bed, watching TV by her-
self. And then the phone rang.
It was a pediatric nurse
familiar with little Bryce’s
congenital heart condition.
After nearly three years on
the transplant list, there was
a heart waiting for Bryce.
“I said ‘Are you kidding
me?’ ” Nicole recalls. “I was
literally skipping up and
down the hallway!”
It was a call the Rogersons
weren’t sure would ever
come. Bryce was diagnosed
with hypoplastic left heart
syndrome (HLHS) before he
was even born, after a routine
ultrasound at 18 weeks
picked up an anomaly.
HLHS – a syndrome in which
the left side of a child's heart
was underdeveloped – is one
of the three most common
heart issues a child can be
born with, but it can be fatal
if left untreated.
To increase the Bryce’s
chances, Nicole underwent
in utero surgery at just 26
weeks pregnant to open up a
hole in his heart to allow
blood to flow properly and
help him develop in the
womb. Ten days after he was
born in February 2005, Bryce
underwent his first open
heart surgery. At 8 months, he
had another, and in October
of 2008, a third open heart
surgery.
But in 2010 came a devas-
tating diagnosis. Bryce had
developed plastic bronchitis,
a condition of the lungs most
common in cystic fibrosis
patients. Rubbery chunks of
mucus had begun develop-
ing in his lungs, making him
struggle to breathe. Although
the issue presents itself in the
lungs, doctors put the blame
on his heart, which pumps
oxygenated blood to the
lungs. By 2011, doctors told the
Rogersons their best choice
would be to put Bryce on the
transplant list – for a heart. A
new heart, they told them,
would take pressure off the
lungs and hopefully allow
them to heal themselves.
On March 25, 2011, Bryce
was added to the transplant
list with what’s known as 1B
status, the second from the
top. At the time, doctors told
the Rogersons that listing
him at 1A – the highest and
most needy status – would
require Bryce to wait in a hos-
pital for a heart to be found.
But with Bryce able to take
his medication at home, the
Rogersons opted to keep him
in Neversink, to allow him to
continue attending school
and be with his family.
They were told it would
take six months to a year to
find him a heart.
On June 25, 2013, more
than two years later, his heart
hadn’t come. The Rogersons
moved their son up to 1A sta-
tus, the top of the transplant
waiting list.
At that time, doctors had
changed their mind and said
Bryce could stay home and
wait. They told the Rogersons
it would probably be a month
or two until a heart was
found. It was almost seven months
until the call came.
That was January 14, the
night Nicole called a friend to
watch Bryan and packed her
other two kids into the car to
fly over the roads to Morgan
Stanley Children’s Hospital at
Columbia Presbyterian in
New York City. Bryce was cry-
ing, Nicole recalls, but his
biggest worry was “how am I
going to turn in my home-
work?” “I told him your teacher
isn’t going to worry about
your writing assignment.”
Husband Brian had just
arrived in Alabama for his
hunting trip and couldn’t find
a flight north, so he rented a
car in Montgomery and
drove straight through the
night to Atlanta, Georgia, for
the earliest flight to
LaGuardia, a 6 a.m. that he
hoped would get him there in
time to see his little boy
before he went into surgery.
Brian’s plane left late, but
the fates aligned – because of
