Del Mar To Consider Adding Races

To 2014 Summer Meeting

Del Mar Thoroughbred Club officials will consider expanding theracing schedule for the track’s 2014 summer meeting after field sizesshowed a notable increase at the current meeting, which ends onWednesday, September 4.

Track President Joe Harper said Sunday that adding races to theexisting 37-day calendar would be a likely option instead of addingracing days. “It certainly is a thought, just seeing how strong theentries have been for most of the meet,” Harper said. “I think it’ssomething we need to talk about.”

Through Saturday, Del Mar had averaged 8.75 runners per racethrough 34 days of racing. Last year, the entire meeting averaged 8.66runners per race. The highest average field size at Del Mar in the last20 years occurred in 1995, with 9.01 runners per race.

At the current meeting, Del Mar typically has run eight races onweekdays, 10 on Saturdays, and nine on Sundays.—continued atwww.BloodHorse.com

If you would permit me, I’d like to share a true story about friendship and compassion few know of, but upon which many havecommented.

Thirty years ago two people became friends—dear friends. It wasa friendship that continued and strengthened over the many years,as they often shared personal hardships and moments of wonderand joy.

For much of my life I’ve been told that we should consider ourselvesquite fortunate if our journey rewards us with one or two such friends. I, like many others who knew them, saw theirs as one of thosefriendships that comes along only once or twice in a lifetime, and towhich we all aspire.

Over the past four years each battled a different form of cancer. Withthe love, help, and support of the other, the first of them survived thebattle, while the second sadly did not. In the days leading up to thatdeath, he asked several of us for help in going to the racetrack so thathe could enjoy that experience one last time with those he loved andhad become acquainted over a 42-year career in racing..—continued atwww.paulickreport.com

Mark And Carla: Friends Till The Very End

The Oak Tree Racing Association, which for 42 yearsbetween 1969 and 2010 ran a fall race meeting that annually was one of the high points of Southern Californiaracing, has not seen its flag fly for racing purposes for thepast two seasons. But the not-for-profit corporation thatchanneled its profits into research, development and breeding, as well as other worthy charitable causes keyed by the theme of “horsemen helping horsemen,” still has apresence in the industry.

On the final two days of its race meeting, the Del MarThoroughbred Club will run the second editions of racesOak Tree helped establish and fund—the Oak Tree JuvenileFillies Turf on Monday and the Oak Tree Juvenile Turf onWednesday, September 4.

Both races are at a mile on grass with $100,000 pursesand quickly have become key stepping stones to their racecounterparts on the Breeders’ Cup programs, which thisyear will be run at Santa Anita Park on November 1 and 2.(The Oak Tree Racing Association previously had hostedthe Breeders’ Cup at Santa Anita five times—1986, 1993,2003, 2008 and 2009.)

Last year the Oak Tree board also enabled the shift of oneof its signature races—the Yellow Ribbon Handicap—to DelMar. The mile and one-sixteenth turf race carries a$150,000 purse and again will be presented at the shoretrack this year, serving as the featured event on Monday’striple-stakes card.

The Oak Tree Racing Association continues to functionas a positive force on the racing landscape in Californiathrough its president John Barr, its executive vice-presidentSherwood Chillingworth, and its directors—Dr. JackRobbins, Thomas Capehart, Dr. Rick Arthur, RichardMandella, Warren Williamson and Robert Zamarripa, Sr.

Interested in learning about Genetic markers and profiling in Thoroughbredracing and breeding?

This relatively new science shows there are well-documented genetic markers which the great race horses have in common. Genetic profiling can tell froma hair sample, collected from any Thoroughbred horse, how many of these markers(alleles) your racing prospect has in common with the ”Greats.” Historically thisinformation has only been available to extremely wealthy and powerful players in our sport.

The Northern California Equine Association (NCEA) wants to lift the veil of mystery offthis subject. We are honored to have as our guest lecturer for September, Dr. StevenTammariello. Dr. Tammariello is an Associate Professor of Molecular Genetics and theDirector of the Institute for Equine Genomics at Binghamton University in New York, andthe owner of Thorough Gen LLC, a New York-based equine genomics company. Dr. Tammariello has extensive research experience in molecular physiology, proteomics andgenomics and has published papers in scientific journals including The Journal of

Neuroscience, the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of theUnited States of America, and Cellular Immunology. He has been the recipient ofmultiple grants from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the National ScienceFoundation (NSF) and the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). Hisresearch lab is currently studying the genetics of athleticism in horses andhumans, and the role of oxidative stress in human neurodegenerative disease.

Please join us on Saturday, September 14, at Golden Gate Fields for an informative discus-sion where Dr. Tammariello will illuminate the possibilities this new science has to offer andalso answer all your questions. The meeting will start at 9:30 am in the Bay View Loungewith a one hour presentation by Dr. Tammariello, followedby a Q&A forum Come early andbring an open mind. There will be a $10/head fee at the door to cover the cost ofrentingthe room and flying Dr. Tammariello out to California. Please send a reply if you intend to attend so we can besure to have enough seating for the group. Please contact the NCEAat [email protected] OR http://www.norcalequine.org/

Admit it: You talk to your horse. We all do it. Weknow perfectly well they can’t understand the wordswe're saying, but shouldn't they be able to inferthings from our tone of voice?

For instance, your horse might appear to relaxwhen you speak in a soothing tone. But is it just coin-cidence? Katrina Merkies, PhD, associate professorand equine program coordinator at the University ofGuelph in Ontario, tested this theory and presentedher study results at the 9th Annual InternationalSociety for Equitation Science, held July 18-20 at theUniversity of Delaware, in Newark.

“Anecdotally it is believed that speaking in a calmvoice will inspire calm behavior in the horse,” shesaid. —continued at www.thehorse.com

Human Voice’s Effect On Horses

“He has a great temperament.” You might have heardan owner or trainer say these words when describing ahorse, but how do we really define temperament?

According to Jeannine Berger, DVM, Dipl. ACVB,of the San Francisco Society for the Prevention ofCruelty to Animals in California, one of the most use-ful and consistent indicators of equine temperament is ahorse's novelty response, or how he handles or copeswith new objects or situations. She presented the resultsof a recent novelty response study she and colleaguesconducted on adult horses at the 9th AnnualInternational Society for Equitation Science, held July18-20 at the University of Delaware, in Newark.—continued at www.thehorse.com

Nestled in rollinghills adjacent to thehorse-related commu-nity of SantaTheresita, you willfind one of the oldestand most beautifulhomages to the Thor-oughbred in this state,California Thorough-bred Ranch.

Now in its fourthdecade of operation, the ranch was builtfrom the ground up byJack and Susie Farmerwho still own thebeautiful facility andlive right on the premises. Once an abandoned alfalfafield, the ranch is a striking portrayal of early Californiaarchitecture, right down to the adobe and mission-styleconstruction of the barns and office complex.

The main barn contains stalls for 40 horses intraining and the foaling barn comes equipped withclosed circuit television monitors that are linked up tothe farm manager’s office and residence 24 hours a day.Newborns are kept in stalls with their dams for the first36 hours of life and monitored closely. After that, theyare moved outdoors to grassy paddocks and pastures. The region’s temperate climate allows for horses to liveoutdoors year-round, and the ranch’s pastures rangefrom two acres to almost 50 and follow the contours ofthe foothills.

To date, more than 200 stakes winners have beenfoaled and raised on the ranch’s green fields. Others, like last year’s Eclipse champion juvenile colt ValidPoint, were brought to the ranch as yearlings for break-ing and schooling. California Thoroughbred Ranchalso has an excellent reputation as a training center. It

offers five round pens,an indoor ridingarena and a scenicuphill gallop thatwinds its way throughthe facility. There arealso two treadmillsand a swimming pool, where lay-ups canregain their condi-tioning without riskof further injury.

The ranch is hometo two of California’sfinest stallions. SuperDad is the sire of 22graded stakes winnersand countless other

stakes performers. His champion daughter Daddy’s LittleGal captured last year’s Cal Cup Juvenile Fillies and thisyear’s grade I Santa Anita Oaks. Moneymaker was foaledat the ranch and now stands at stud here. This gradedstakes winner of nearly $400,000 has thrust himself intothe national spotlight when his son Hayburner capturedthis year’s Travers Stakes at Saratoga. Winner of theWood Memorial and second in both the Kentucky Derbyand Preakness Stakes, Hayburner now has earnings over$1 million. The Cal-bred is now pointing for theBreeders’ Cup Classic.

Farm manager Bob Trainer has more than 30 yearsof experience in this business and gives your horses thepersonal care and attention they deserve. Assistantmanager and yearling trainer Steve Winner also hasmany years of veterinary experience, although thefarm’s main vet lives just down the road and is on call24 hours a day, especially during the busy foaling sea-son. Visitors are welcome and encouraged to come andtour the facilities. Also visit their impressive website atwww.Califthoroughbredranch.com.

REGION #2:

REGION #3:

Compared to last week: All classes of hay traded mostly steady. Many producers are beginning to store hay with hopes of the market becoming more favorable. Slightly above normal temperatures were seen across most of the state. Scattered storms in the Northern part of the state were seen while heaving rain due to an abnormal monsoonal flow, flooded region 5 and 6. Fire danger across the state still remains very high. According to the USDANational Forest Service there are 9 active fires burning nearly 290,000 acres state wide. The largest is the Rim Fire located in Tuolumne County at

199,227 acres. Range conditions continue to be fair to poor with little forage for livestock. Available water at lower elevations continues to decline. InNorthern California dry land pastures and rangelands are done for the year forcing ranchers to look for alternative forage much earlier than normal. There was limited trade throughout the state with the sharpest decline in region 5 and 6. Due to heavy rain in the southern part of the state field workis at a standstill preventing shipment of current and new contracts. Trade was slow on moderate to light demand. All prices reported FOB at the stack

or barn unless otherwise noted. Regions are defined at bottom of report.
