8 AM - DAY 1Surviving the In-House Solution Stack Hack GARDEN COURT 1Bob Berry, CEO, DPS Telecom / Eastern Independent TelecomIn today's environment, we are always in need of a solution to some new problem. When off-the-shelf solutions won't solve

it, we “roll our own”.It starts with a bright idea. You build a solution from off-the-shelf components and some home-brew stuff. A script here, a

custom cable there, a custom mount, and – voila! – a bona fide solution stack. It works great! But problems are lurking in our “in-house solution stack hack”. The problems are associated with scale, support, and the

passage of time.More locations want your solution, but you can't scale delivery because you don't have design control. Some components

are discontinued. Others are replaced by new versions. Nothing is compatible anymore. Notes from the original release aresketchy. No support is available.Your network and customers are too important for an uncontrolled solution stack. You can mitigate the problems by preparing

in advance. The goal should always be about maximizing the value of the solution while simultaneously minimizing the risk. This session will talk about bringing processes into your company to successfully manage the roll-out of an in-house solution

stack hack, as well as how to find your perfect fit solution without becoming a product manufacturer. We will cover brainstorming, involving stakeholders, documentation, field trials and functionality testing, verifying quality standards, and installation plans.

Industry Certification & Credentialing GARDEN COURT 2John Bakowski, RCDD/NTS/OSP/WD, Past President, BICSIComplex solutions to todays Network Design Systems require more than a general product knowledge. John will review the

various options for both Corporate & Contractor scenarios and the significance of Industry certification. Service expertise andManufacturer specific knowledge alone are no longer sufficient to meet Client project bid responses. The discussion will focuson the variety of certification options and how they benefit both the End User & the Service Provider.

9AM - DAY 1Home Network Testing 2.0: Improves Production & Quality GARDEN COURT 1Justin Nagle, Product Line Manager, JDSUThis presentation will cover an overview of the Home PNA standard and it’s evolution as well as describing the enhancements

introduced in HPNA 3.0 and 3.1, the business drivers for HPNA use, typical applications, challenges and best practices forimplementation. The future of the Home PNA standard will be discussed as it merges with the G.hn standard. The latest HPNA revision was developed for high performance applications that require high data rates and guaranteed QOS.

Because no special wiring or new cabling is required it offers a low cost and quick method of implementing distributed voice, video and data services within a residence or an MDU while maintaining a high QOS and bandwidth for future data rate growth. Typical installations will be covered along with potential problems that could be experienced with wiring: shorts, opens, cuts,

connectors, corrosion, ingress noise. HPNA devices will adjust to network impairments, however in order to make a reliableconnection the devices may adjust their transmission characteristics such that while there may be a reliable connection it isslow. Proper troubleshooting methods will be described for overcoming these pitfalls.

Intelligent Grounding: Locates Made Easier GARDEN COURT 2Maurice Déquier, Sales & Marketing Manager, Norscan TechnologiesHow far does your locate signal go? 500 Metres? 1 Km? Whether you realize it or not, you could be getting much more

distance out of your cable locator transmitter. By conditioning your outside plant with Intelligent Grounding devices, you canextend the distance of your cable locate signal to upwards of two to three miles (3-5 kms)! As an added bonus, the extendedlocating range means you reduce the number of access points required, and therefore the total time required to perform eachcable locate.

Machine to Machine - Enabling Legacy Dial Up Devices WHITEHORNEric Larson, VP Sales & Marketing, TeleticsThese types of applications are generally core to a customer's business. They require a solution that meets the junction of

allowing existing, reliable devices to continue to operate, while moving into a new communications network system that willallow lower cost and future expansion.

10AM - DAY 1Cost Comparison Analysis Of Distribution and GARDEN COURT 1

Drop Cable Installation In FTTH DeploymentsRoger Vaughn, Product Technology Manager, AFLThere are three segments of cable in FTTH deployment; backbone, distribution and drop cable. Backbone cabling connects

from the central office (CO) to a distribution center. From the distribution center, distribution cables are routed passed homesand businesses. Installed along this distribution cable are access points to connect drop cables to the subscriber. Taking acloser look at two segments of deployment, distribution and drop cables, we can compare common installation methods andcosts. The three types of distribution cable installation used for comparison are the traditional cable and closure, long tailterminal and engineered cable with terminals. For distribution cable installation, contractors are typically used. These contractorscharge by time, project, or piece part and sometimes a combination of the three. Placing access points along the distribution cable is another cost consideration, which can have a significant impact on total

costs now and in the future. The type of access point, when, and where installed is contingent upon many considerations. Eachinstallation method has its benefits and associated costs depending on the opportunity presented.

harsh envirnoments. such as in the oil and gas industry, additional protection is required for the fiber optic strands. In thesecases, cable design becomes very important. Things like crush resistance, chemical resistance, vertical rise, temperature, moisture, bend, impact, tensile load, rodents all must be taken into account. This presentation will review the types ofenvironments where fiber optic cable can be used and what types are best suited.

3 Reasons Successful Gigabit Fiber Deployments WHITEHORNwill depend onLabor-light Technology

Kevin Kress, Application Engineer, ClearfieldTo reduce the cost of gigabit broadband, technical resources must be maximized so that service providers can quickly turn

up subscribers. “Labor-lite” technology significantly reduces the need for extensive pre-engineering and simplifies fiberinstallations and maintenance. Leveraging the plug-and-play attributes allows skilled technicians to focus on areas that requirespecialized labor, such as drop cable splicing for high fiber count access networks. This enables service providers to achieveproper economics to make gigabit fiber deployments a reality. Attendees will come away with the 3 key reasons that labor-lite technology drive Success for gigabit fiber deployments:

1 Reduced Cost: When “connectorization” replaces traditional splicing, skilled labor can be optimized while the cost todeploy a FTTX network decreases.

2 Reduced Time of Deployment: The need for pre-engineering is significantly reduced and installation can be achievedwith a single truck roll.

3 Improved Service Reliability: Interchangeable plug-and-play equipment/connectors ensure quality of service forcustomers.

Intelligent PrioritizationBasil Dillon-Malone, VP International Sales, Arcom DigitalOver the past few years, much attention has been given to QAM egress negatively impacting LTE BTS performance, and to

a lesser extent to LTE forward ingress negatively impacting the HFC transmission network. New leakage detection is nowcommercially available and is becoming widely used. As a result of these deployments, it has become clear that the quantityof leaks at or near LTE transmission frequencies is very significant. This abundance of leak locations has created someoperational challenges as to how to efficiently prioritize repair such that those leaks most likely to be disruptive from an ingressor egress perspective are mitigated first. A fix them all approach is simply not feasible, nor effective. The only status quo prioritization method is to make repair decisions based upon detected signal level, and repair the largest

leaks first – simply because level is the only information available. This method is however flawed and inefficient – operationalresources will be wasted on mitigating leaks at locations not causing problems, while ignoring other locations that should beaddressed more urgently. WIFI Installation & TroubleshootingScott Pettygrove, Product Line Manager, Access Business Unit, JDSUThe number of Wi-Fi connected devices within the residence is exploding - computers, tablets, phones, televisions, smart

appliances and on and on. Additionally, the latest 802.11 technology provides great improvement over previous versions. Thisgrowth in the number of devices, larger pipes to the home and more capable technology has in turn contributed an increase incustomers quality-of-experience (QoE) expectations. Customers want to consume premium content on the device they want, where they want, when they want it, and have a high quality, trouble-free experience while doing so. Some service providersare or are considering cutting the cord completely and distributing broadcast video and video-on-demand to set-top boxes usingWi-Fi only. Taken as a whole, this new climate has created significant challenges for operators including: a large increase in the number

of Wi-Fi related help desk calls, difficulty in segmenting, identifying and resolving performance issues and the risk of customerchurn due to poor QoE. This session will cover:• Short Technology Overview• Common WiFi challenges and sources of degradation• Best practices for installation and troubleshooting

Leak Mitigation Strategies, Operational Efficiency through Intelligent PrioritizationThis paper explores several novel methods of intelligent prioritization, where more and better data is used to highlight those

leaks that are most likely to be either network or LTE affecting. Topics explored include utilizing measured LTE downlink signalstrength, using a detection channel at the LTE band, utilizing network maps containing signal level data, and making use of thespectrum capture features of modern cable modems. All of the methods of intelligent prioritization explored in this paper contribute to a significantly more cost effective and more

operationally effective approach to network maintenance and leak mitigation efforts.

8 AM - DAY 2TDM to IP (TDM>IP) GARDEN COURT 1R. Glenn Buck, CECP, RCDD Manager - Sales Engineers, Transition Networks for Graybar CanadaCarrier Ethernet today has many attributes that qualify it as the “service platform” most preferred by Service Providers

worldwide. Increasingly, these key attributes are often used in service level agreements to ensure service availability andsuperior packet performance. While the shift to all IP/Ethernet networks are rapidly taking place, both Service Providers andcommercial customers are aggressively looking for ways to retain their investments in legacy based TDM equipment whilemigrating to an all IP Ethernet infrastructure. TDM-based circuit switched networks have long been used to very cost effectivelyand reliably send voice and data traffic over either public or leased DS1/DS3 circuits. These circuits still represent a significantportion of total revenue in Carrier networks and in many networks today, the equipment used to transport TDM co-existsalongside IP packet based equipment. Now, TDM over IP technology allows voice, data and video services, that have traditionally been carried over private or leased

DS1’s to be cost effectively migrated to an all IP Ethernet network. Supported today over existing packet switched networks(IP, MPLS, Ethernet), TDM over IP packet emulation uses adaptation methods to ensure TDM clocking and synchronization isretained and latency is minimized. Seminar Agenda/Highlights: • TDM over IP Technology

Virtual Customer Premise Equipment (vCPE) Technology, GARDEN COURT 2Standards & Methods of Implementation

Marc Matthews, Director - Sales Engineering, Accedian NetworksWith the promise of lower cost and faster deployment speeds, business services and data center (DC) connectivity providers

are seeking to employ Network Function Virtualization (NFV) and, in-turn, reduce and simplify the physical hardware in thenetwork. With the largest proportion of network elements located at the edge, the biggest savings in capital and operationalexpenditures (CapEx and OpEx) will be at the customer premise (CP). As managed services may traditionally employ a number of appliances at the CP – Virtualized Network Functions (VNFs)

can provide a competitive edge by replacing many of these with their virtualized equivalents. Service providers often refer tothis as a ‘virtual CPE’ (vCPE) strategy -- virtualizing as many CPE functions as possible, while retaining the minimum hardwarerequired to establish, monitor and maintain the service. Topics which will be covered in depth: • CPE functions suited to virtualization vs. those which still require hardware assist • A review of typical vCPE deployment architectures • Virtual Network Function (VNF) hosting approaches, location in the network and performance implications • ROI / cost savings that can be expected in transitioning to a vCPE strategy • Considerations for Scalability, Capacity, Security, Reliability, OpEx, Footprint & Power Consumption, Latency

DAY 2 – Sessions

9AM - DAY 2 CONTINUEDThe Ins and Outs of Powering Small Cells WHITEHORNKevin Borders, Director of Product Marketing, Alpha TechnologiesWireless service providers expect small cells to provide coverage and capacity that is not currently possible with macro cell

networks. Small cell deployment can be targeted to fill a coverage gap or used to deliver capacity in locations where bandwidthdemand exceeds the capacity of the macro cell. Widespread deployment, though, is not only dependent on small cell technology, but also on fundamental issues such as how to provide power to these distributed devices. This paper addresses the issueswith powering small cells. Key topics include: • The type (AC/DC) and amount of power required by the devices • Battery backup – is it needed and for how long? • How power requirements vary for indoor and outdoor installations • Size and weight of the power devices • Power system maintenance requirements The intent is for the audience to understand the issues in powering small cells, the solutions available for different applications,

and how these solutions can be routinely deployed in a broad network build.

10AM - DAY 2 100G Client Interface Evolution GARDEN COURT 1Shaun Harmon, Ethernet/IP Specialist, JDSUThe growth in user traffic remains strong and is driving core networks to support high line-rate interfaces such as 100G and

above. In transport networks, 100G has become commonplace, while its use is gaining popularity in the data center. Thepurpose of this discussion is to review current and upcoming requirements particularly for 100G client interfaces. As needs areevolving, new interfaces and pluggable optics are being developed not only for the more common LR4 10km reach but forlonger and shorter distances. We examine client optics and associated test needs.

PNM Approaches for Improving Efficiency and Subscriber Experience: GARDEN COURT 2Applying Lessons Learned from DOCSIS Proactive Network Maintenance Practices

Scott Helms, VP of Technology, ZCorumThis session will provide new insight into DOCSIS-inspired Proactive Network Maintenance (PNM) strategies. The topic covers

ways PNM can help operators maintain their cable plant more efficiently by addressing issues as part of routine maintenance ratherthan waiting for subscribers to call to report a problem. The three PNM strategies that will be highlighted are: 1 Leveraging the full spectrum capture capabilities in CPE to actively monitor all data and video channels on the downstreamcable plant;

2 Using pre-equalization data to locate upstream impairments before service is impacted; 3 Using data collected from embedded WiFi radios to improve installations and to proactively detect and correct WiFiissues.

Recent Developments in Fiber Optic Technology for FTTH WHITEHORNand Long Haul Networks

Mark Boxer, Applications Engineering Manager, OFSOver the past 12-18 months, there have been many new developments in fiber optic technology. This seminar will cover new

fiber optic developments targeted for FTTH networks and also highlight challenges and solutions for long-haul, high data rate(400 Gbps) backhaul operators. In addition, the presentation will survey new products and technologies for the MDU market.

8AM - DAY 2 CONTINUEDEnsuring Cabling Performance in the Customer-owned Outside Plant WHITEHORNKeith Foord, Product Manager, Greenlee TextronDesigning a fiber network requires the careful consideration of design requirements, selecting the appropriate components,

the effective and correct use of test instrumentation and complying with industry standard best practices to implement a robusthigh performance fiber link. If careful consideration is given, a high performance future proof fiber link will be built at the mosteconomical CAPEX with low OPEX. The use of splice on connectors will be discussed, detailing the advantages and performance gains when compared to

mechanical connectors. Common test instrumentation such as laser and LED sources, optical power meters, automated opticalloss test sets and OTDR’s is critical in the testing, certifying and troubleshooting of fiber links will be demonstrated with typicalmeasurements. Practical examples of OTDR signatures will be discussed which demonstrate the importance of keymeasurement settings. Particular emphasis will also be placed on the importance of cleaning and inspecting the fiber connectorsbefore connecting to instruments and equipment bulkheads so as to remove the risk of damage.

Copper is not surrendering yet. Every year DSLAM manufacturers are stretching the limits of DSL technologies either from areach or bandwidth point of view. In this presentation we will develop and explain the new tricks that enable 150MBps to thehouse. Putting the "D" back into DWDM Full-Band Multi-wavelength Systems GARDEN COURT 2Paul Whittlesey, Director Marketing, InnoTrans Communications / Capella TelecommunicationsSince the mid 1990’s Cable Operators have been deploying DWDM multi-wavelength networks to deliver 200 MHz of

narrowcast content in a Broadcast / Narrowcast overlay topology. Today 200 MHz of narrowcast QAM content is no longerenough to keep pace with competition and is driving the requirement to replace the broadcast / narrowcast topology with a full-band transmitter solution. However, migrating the RF spectrum from 200 MHz to a full spectrum of 50 to 1000+ MHz of QAM modulated signals on

DWDM transmitters has thus far required expensive externally modulated transmitter technology, or a reduction in the numberof wavelengths from 40 to 8 or 16 due to Four Wave Mixing (FWM) and cross-talk limitations. In our presentation we will describe a cost effective “hybrid” transmitter technology which permits a full-band of QAM signals

with up to 40 wavelengths and 40 dB MER on a single fiber without degradation due to FWM and cross-talk.

11AM - DAY 2 / TRADE SHOW OPENSEfficient Deployment and Service Orchestration of Distributed NFV GARDEN COURT 1Mohamed Elmosaly, Product Marketing Manager, FONEX Data SystemsNetwork Functions Virtualization (NFV) has become an important discussion with Service Providers when designing network

projects that aim to reduce costs and accelerate service delivery. NFV offers multiple benefits to Service Providers. We willexamine how Distributed-NFV (D-NFV) is a viable approach to the distribution of virtualized network functions (VNFs) throughoutthe network. Distributed NFV places VNFs wherever they may be most effective and least expensive. When deployed in theaccess network D-NFV enables service providers to create value for their customers by combining smart demarcation withextended service capabilities on a flexible and non-proprietary platform. Service Providers appreciate D-NFV as a stepping stone to full blown NFV. This initial deployment is a center-less solution

with minimum upfront investment and risk while benefiting from fast service introduction and improved quality of experience.Once resources are in place, the Service Provider can eventually proceed towards full-scale NFV. This presentation willdiscuss the concept of D-NFV and the architecture required from both a hardware and software perspective that will enablethe provisioning and management of virtualized network functions.

Energy Efficient & Sustainable Cooling Strategies for Telecom GARDEN COURT 2Aaron Church, Key Account Manager, US and Canada, DanthermNetwork traffic is expected to nearly double over the next 3 years. During the same time, the average network speed will

also double – mobile will increase over 2.5 Mbps and wired connections up to 1 Gbps. Current networks cannot support thisgrowth and communications equipment must evolve to meet this growth. Micro sites are increasing, macro sites are becomingmore intelligent, using hardened equipment on the tower, utilizing smaller enclosures. Mobile network (4G) will move to 5G.Wired networks consist of fiber in greenfield areas, but copper lines still exist for many of the networks. The demand for cooling is not going away. Thermal solutions are evolving to be smaller, more efficient and more reliable

(MTBF). Providers need thermal management solutions that will reduce their energy, cooling and infrastructure costs. It isextremely important to understand which energy efficient and sustainable cooling strategies are appropriate for the varioustelecom applications.
