To the Amsterdam Virginia Tobacco Contracts. The following contracts have been found after completion of the Calendar and are given in summary form. The complete translation is available on request. Arch. 547/304 16-11-1621 Hendrick Eelkes, Daniel van den Kerkhove acting for Gillis Vermolen, Pieter van Beeque acting for Jan Heuft, and Hans Joris Hontom, owners of the ship De Duyff (Pigeon). Ship will sail to Virginia. Agent is Jacob Jacobsen Eelkes. First mate: Symon Symonsen. Skipper is Hans Joris Hontom. Most probably by Virginia is meant New Netherland specifically Delaware. Resolutions 24-9-1621 A the request of Dierck Volckertsen, Doctor Verus and Dr. Carbasius, all of Hoorn, Pieter State General Nannincx of Mdemblik, and Cornelis Volckertsen together with Pieter Dircksen Schoders, bookkeeper have received permission to send a ship to the Virginies loaded with all sorts of merchandise, to trade there and return with their cargo, goods and merchandise, agent and sailors to this country. They have to return before July 1, 1622. 291/15v 12-7-1623 Ananias Banneth, Englishman, age 40, first mate of the ship the Samuel, declares at the request of the creditors of Albert Gerritsen Ruyl, former merchant on this ship, that he has known him well. They left together on that ship from England for Virginia. The said Ruyl died there in August 1622.

Comp. 1623-1673 fol. 70 v. no. 1 Notulen 21-7-1623 In the mean time Mr. Godyn says that the skipper or agent is called Jan Gysen who arrived in Algemeen 24-12-1624 the fall from the Virginias for the account of Lambert van Tweenhuysen and Company, and Ryksarchief. The that the copper wares were made in the coppermill on the Nieuwendyk, which copperwares Hague Archives of are only used in the Virginias. Mr. Menten mentions that the name of the skipper is David 1623-1673 Pietersen. (Meant is New Netherland). fol. 71 v. 444/55v 11-3-1630 Jan Jansen and Hendrick Hendius, book sellers of Amsterdam, let to Evert Symontsen Hamersvelt and Salomon Rogiers, plate cutters of Amsterdam, the cutting and etching of maps, 36, among others of Virginia, Venezuela, Guyana etc. to be delivered within 18 months. Price: 100 Carolus guilders for each plate. 847 18-12-1630 Insinuation of Isaack Ellis, English merchant of Amsterdam to Aaron Musaphia, Portuguese. In margin: Ship back in Amsterdam and unloaded shall be Caulbed by his crew: signed: Martten Hacker, Franck het Kynt, Abraham Donekers for his brother-in-law Martten Hacker.

1224/79v 7-8-1634 Marten Hacker, merchant of Plymouth in England, and Abraham Donoker, merchant of Amsterdam, State to have brought from Claes Janssen Clopper, Merchant of Amsterdam, 38 ton and 12 tuns of Noortbodems tar at 100 Carolus guilders a ton (together fl. 1992.6.-.) This money shall be taken on bottomry on the ship. Angel Gabriel, skipper Frank Cornelissen Klint of Rotterdam. This ship shall bring the tar to West India. Virginia or elsewhere. A week after return of ship this amount will be paid to the seller of the tar. 414/173 26-8-1636 Gaspar and Daniel Verlet, brothers, shall provide to Dierck Corssen Stam the sum of 1200 Carolus guilders. This is for payment of 1/10 part of the ship named Ransselaerewyck, large 120 ton, skipper Jan Tjabkens. Also for the cargo and equipment for the journey to New Netherland and Virginia and surroundings. Said D.C. Stam shall accompany ship as merchant and shall receive as wages half of the profits. In case of his death his brother Arent Corssen Stam shall take over his work. 1375/34 31-7-1637 Pieter Janssen Quast of Enkhuisen, who goes with commander Pieter Mimmit to the English Virginias in the service of private persons, makes his last will. 677 12-4-1638 Contract between Cornelis Melyn, citizen of Amsterdam on one side, and Jean de Chevery and Pietry Dewalde, Hasques of St. Jean de Ins, on the other side. At their return in Amsterdam the two Hasques shall be paid 300 guilders, 100 guilders to be paid in advance. They will have free food, drink and board. 1022 21-7-1638 Jan Tames Hacker of Amsterdam gives procuration to his wife, Elsgen Jansdr. and to Pieter Molanessen Venndek, to receive for him from Willem Claessen, skipper of The Wapen van Noorwegen, that is ready to go to Virginia, the sun of fl 55 for delivered bread.

1609/43-46 29-6-1639 Insinuation of Jan Webster, merchant of Amsterdam, on behalf of Richard Glover, merchant of London, to Willem Nuylman, merchant of Amsterdam. Requests immediate delivery of 2 hogsheads of Virginia leaf tobacco which had been loaded by Humphry Basse in the James River in the ship “The Friend of London”, skipper Leonard Bets? in order to be delivered to Glover or his agent according to the bill of lading. Nuylman has unloaded this tobacco gainst law and reason from the ship. Makes him responsible for the costs. Nuylman says that the skipper has delivered him all the tobacco on orders of friends in London. Against payment of all expenses Nuylman is willing to deliver the tobacco to Webster in the name of Mattheo Cradocke, merchant of London, with regard to 3 hogsheads of Virginia tobacco which Thomas Stegges had loaded in that river in the same ship. 1624/394v 19-12-1639 Dirck Corssen Stam of Amsterdam give his brother Arent Stam power of attorney going to the West Indies to claim from several people in Virginia the proceeds of the goods belonging to him. 818 20-9-1646 Dominicus Cryger of Nibing,? at present in Amsterdam, gives power of attorney to Igbert Taunissen, chief boatswain of the Gracht, skipper Pieter Pietersen Smit, ready to sail to Virginia, in order to demand from Francoys Farley 100 lbs. Virginia leaf tobacco, same from Robert Mason and Patrick Jackson together also 100 lbs ; and from William Carter 20 lbs. of the same tobacco, all according to the obligations thereof.
