We have been delighted to work with Samantha on this wonderful & worthwhile project. When cancer strikes it causes so much distress and knowing who to turn to for sound ad-vice and support is so important. Here in Mallorca many people find themselves without the comfort of family nearby, so it is good to be able to help those who do so much to help others. The whole team including models, helpers and sponsors has been amazing to work with. Getting involved with projects is a major part of our business, and with the knowledge that comes from decades of marketing and print production experience in the UK and eight years of marketing, publishing and event creation in Mallorca, we offer unrivaled knowledge and expertise to all our clients and project partners.

Since I was 15 years old, I have been aware of the relation between nutrition and life-style diseases. I was an apprentice and my boss suffered from multiple sclerosis. Only by converting his nutrition into very healthy food was he able to improve his state of health to an extent which enabled him to walk to some degree, needing his wheelchair only from time to time. Of course, he was very enthusiastic about it and every single day he told me HOW important nutrition was for our health, beauty and, of course, also the ageing process. At that time, being a 15-year-old girl, I was not at the least interested in that – but gradually I came to find this subject fascinating, that was when the connection between micronutrients and the ageing process became my hobby. For a long time, little information was available, nobody knew what FREE RADICALES or antioxidants were.

Nowadays this subject is widely known. In 1993 I was able to turn my hobby into a profession. I started working in the micronutrient trade. Up to now it is my concern to do EVERYTHING possible to promote prevention.Of course, this project fascinated me and I have been happy to support this Calendar.

Celebration of Women Calendar 2012

Tonight sees the launch of a very special calendar created by photographer Samantha Hemsley & team to celebrate the lives of women aged 50 and over, to remember those we’ve lost through cancer, and through the sales of the calendar, raise money to help those currently suffering with the disease. The idea of a calendar first came about when Samantha photographed a number of women at the International Women´s Day held at Mood Beach in March this year. Her ability to create beautiful photographs that capture the essence of an individual was palpable and everyone was so delighted with their own, there was an immediate flurry of new profile photos appearing all over facebook. One of the women at the event, Barbra Marshall, suggested the idea of a calendar in aid of cancer victims and being a lymph and ovarian cancer survivor herself, she immediately put herself forward as a model. The idea moved Samantha which was particularly poignant for her as she lost her mother, aged 58, to cancer just 2 years ago. So, inspired by her mother´s love of the fifties era and the age she was when she died, Samantha posted a note on facebook

Calendar launch programme.indd 6 04/11/2011 07:51

Page 7: Calendar launch Programme

asking for models aged 50 and over. “My idea was to create images that would reflect the personalities of the models, with a hint of fifties glamour” says Samantha. “I wanted it to be beauti-ful, stylish and sumptuous”. Within days 13 models had come forward and the Celebration of Women Calendar 2012 was born. Now, seven months later and with the help of Denise Wrobbel, Joanna Young, Tor Cooper Evans and several other volunteers, hair & makeup artists from Salon B, the loan of venues & props including a DeLorean sports car from Auto Clasico and, thanks to the kind permission of owner Cathy Sasson, the set and selected cast members of the show Come Fly With Me, the final calendar is now revealed. Everyone is devoting their time for free and associations offering support to cancer patients and their families will be the main beneficiaries including Dime, Project Micky and Cancer Support Group, Mallorca.Thank you for supporting us on this very special evening at the stunning Ses Cases de Sa Font Seca. The calendar can now be bought online for 25€. There is also a postal service available for those wishing to send as gifts.

I have been a Performer in the Entertainment Business for 20 years, lived in the North of Mallorca for 15. Wonderfully married with two wonderful Children.I believe I have been truly blessed because 'as yet' I have been unaffected by illness (touching many planks of wood). Over the last couple of years I have been aware of people I know being affected one way or another by Cancer. However this year a good friend of ours in the North began treatment for Breast Cancer. Jo Ryan has been fighting it very publicly, choosing to let us all in there with her, no where for her to hide or us! Through supporting Jo we have also drawn strength from her and each other! I know I have looked at life differently and have been inspired by her positive outlook, courage, humour but mostly feel that if I am affected in the future I can get through it too, it's not such a dirty word anymore, a very strong, important message that Jo has given us all. With that in mind it is important therefore to support the charities around us that do, will and could help every one of us in some way now and in the future, whether it is personally, a friend or family member. Their work in invaluable and we need to be there for them too, the only way to beat the bad things in life is together.

This Rockabilly Group started out in 2009 and is keen to remain faithful to the music of the 50’s era. Performing a mixture of classic songs and some of their very own compositions they have been much in demand across the Balearic Islands over the last 12 months including an exciting 5 date tour of Ibiza. They are taking a break from working in the studio for the upcoming launch of their disc, with the Californian producer Kurt James Schumacher, to entertain everyone tonight. “We are happy to support such a worthwhile cause. Is there any reason not to celebrate women?”

For many years scores of Mallorca’s foreign residents have had nowhere to turn for support and advice when they hear the dreaded words, “you have cancer”. Now a group of past and present cancer sufferers headed up counsellor, Krista Hyer, has been set up to try and ensure that the disease no longer has to be suffered in silence.

Sufferers can experience a whole range of emotions from anger and denial to intense loneliness and hopelessness when they are diagnosed. They may need information about eating well or the physical changes they are experiencing, or need advice for relationship problems they are suffering as a result of their condition, the Cancer Support Group will be ready to listen and help as much as possible.

We welcome the support offered by the Celebration of Women project which will allow us to make more people aware of what we can offer, and help us to offer so much more.

The DIME volunteers are a group of men and women of various ages from many different walks of life and nationalities, who dedicate part of their time and energy to just being there for people with a terminal illness and their families. Our aim is to be a compassionate presence, who they can talk to about anything they want to share.

We mostly visit people at the two Hospices here in Mallorca, one in Joan March Hospital, near to the village of Bunyola, and the other in Hospital General, Palma. We would use donations to recruit and train volunteers and to raise awareness of the service we provide. The Hospice Movement is open to absolutely everybody and our volunteers have shared time with native English, German and French speakers.

“Over the last twenty four years, I have had the pleasure of decorating ballrooms, churches, museums, country manor house and marquees in the UK. Here in Mallorca my work now takes me to stunning locations, fincas and onboard super yachts - so, you name it, I´ve done it! The reason that I am delighted to be able to give my time to this event is that my mother passed away at the age of 61 from Cancer. She was diagnosed at my age now with breast cancer, which was treated and returned some 10 years later and gradually spread to other parts of her body. She was a glamorous, creative artist who lived in a little cottage in Wales with her dogs. She was taken too early and I often wish that she had been around just a little bit longer to see how dramatically my life changed, just a few years ago when I moved here to Mallorca: It would have made her very happy and I know that she would have loved visitng this beautiful island. I think of my mother often and know that alot of my creative talent in arranging flowers, which gives me a lot of pleasure, came from her, so she continues to be a part of my daily life”.

The first Calendar lady to be photographed wrote the following on her blog www.twocrumbliesandacat.com after her day as a model ...

Diane Foden

Well, that’s another ticked off the list of “things to do before you die”. Wasn’t expecting it to be quite so literal, but still – I was a glamour model for a day for a cancer charity calendar. Yes, it’s amazing what can be done with a bald 65-year-old, given enough time and sympathetic makeup. And kind lighting and a nice photographer who understands about chicken neck. This I an unrepentant puff for Samantha Hemsley, the aforesaid nice photographer.

It was a lovely day. Significant Other and I drove to Samantha’s romantic old house up a hill in the country and he was settled in the man-creche with beer and a book. I was then made up for several hours by Lisa from Salon B. Well, it felt like several hours, but then I need an anaesthetic to go to the hairdressers.

Calendar launch programme.indd 24 04/11/2011 07:51

Page 25: Calendar launch Programme

She applied INDIVIDUAL EYELASHES. And gave me back my disappearing eyebrows. Thank heavens I don’t have to look gorgeous all the time; there aren’t enough hours in the day. I must say though, I looked bloody great when she had finished. Another puff there.

We then chose clothes in various shades of black, which had been lent to me by my friend Estelle, the most glamourous lady of a certain age I am ever likely to meet. I have to mention one dress here which has a loose blouson top trimmed with leather and a very slinky lycra skirt bit; told you she was glamourous. The only problem was that the lycra bit was so clingy if I tried to pull it down to cover my knees, my knickers came down with it. Good old Significant Other had to be enlisted to hold up my knickers down the back of the dress whilst I attempted to adjust the skirt bit. I will leave you with that mental picture, and assure you he managed to do it without giving me a wedgie. I swear that dress has a mind of its own though; every time I attempted to walk in it, it either crawled up my legs or slithered down them. I’m not made for elegance, obviously.

I don’t know which, if any of my photos are going to be used in the calendar. But I’m incredibly chuffed with them.
